1.Intro
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my very first FAQ. Therefore, I will try to do my best in giving a
comprehensive guide on how to play with Huang Gai. This FAQ is for use on
GameFAQ's only. Copyright 2003, Christopher Konecke.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.Why Huang Gai?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe your thinking to yourself, "Of all the character's, why should I bother
playing with Huang Gai? I think he's slow, ugly, and I don't care much for his
weapon either." Well, give the big guy a chance will you? Huang Gai IS slow,
but his power is very high. He is excellent at dueling, as his attacks tend
to be concentrated to one person. However, this makes him less effective when
he's alone in a crowd. Until he's stronger, one should intermingle in groups
of allies, and take out stronger enemies.

3.Some info an the REAL Huang Gai
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Huang Gai's birth and death date are unclear.(How mysterious!.)
He served three generations of the Sun family, and was one of the most crucial
elements in the battle of Chi Bi. He allowed Zhou Yu to flog him, in order
to send Cao Cao a false defection letter. When he arrived to "surrender", he
set Cao Cao's fleet on fire. About 850,000 enemy soldiers were defeated,
burned to death, or drowned. Zhang Liao was able to shoot Huang Gai in the
left armpit, but Han Dang saved him. (I am unsure of who saved Huang Gai, but
I believe it was Han Dang.) Huang Gai later died of old age.

This info is what I recieved from reading "Three Kingdoms" translation by
Moss Roberts. If anyone would like to send me corrections or additions to this
info, you may at [email protected].

4.Huang Gai's moves
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For reference, here are the keys.

s=square
t=triangle
m=musou attack(circle)

Standard attacks:

s- Huang Gai does a wide swing in front.

ss- Huang Gai brings his whip back in front while doing an upward swing

sss- Huang Gai smacks the enemy in the head with his whip

ssss- Huang Gai smacks the enemy HARDER

sssss- Huang Gai smacks the enemy EVEN HARDER

ssssss- Huang Gai does an uppercut with his whip, knocking all enemies it
        connects with back.

Charge Attacks:

t(t)- Huang Gai lays an explosive. To throw it, tap T again before he finishes
     setting it.*

st- Huang Gai does an uppercut, launching enemy into air. Your standard combo
   starter.

sst(tttt)-Huang Gai does four foward kicks, then grabs the enemy and tosses him
into the air. This is a great move I think. It suffers from being
a very linear attack, but it is great for combos. Use it on enemy
         generals often.

ssst- Huang Gai hits in an arc in front of him HARD. All enemies it connects
     with fly backwards.

sssst(ttt)- Huang Gai uppercuts an enemy into the air, jumps to meet them, then
hits them three times before hitting them into the ground. Very
           nice.

ssssst- Huang Gai stomps the ground, causing an area of effect shockwave.
Like all stomps, use it when surrounded.

Huang Gai's Musou Attack:

For his musou attack, Huang Gai swings his whip back and forth before knocking
all enemies away with a hard swing in front. His True Musou adds some
additional forward swings that usually only hit one enemy.

*Huang Gai's explosives are dangerous. They hurt allies and yourself. Don't
let this stop you from using them though. They're really fun. Toss one into a
large group and watch the bodies fly!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.How to use Huang Gai effectively
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Huang Gai excels in offensive fighting. His attacks are very powerful and tend
to focus on single enemies. Don't back down, especially in duels. Keep up the
pressure and your opponents will fall. Use the sst for generals and the
ssssst for groups. This is all that you really need to excel with Huang Gai.
That's the beauty of it, nothing fancy, just plain power. Huang Gai definitly
isn't graceful.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.Recommended equipment
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The equipment you use is essential. Without it you won't get far.

This is what I use on my MAX level Huang Gai. Huang Gai has 4 item slots at MAX
level:

Harness-Red Hare Harness
Orb-Vorpal
Item 1-Peacock Urn
Item 2-Tiger Amulet
Item 3-Tortoise Amulet
Item 4-Windscroll

For Harness, Red Hare is always best, especially for the slow moving Huang Gai.

For Orb, it is really a matter of preferance. I rather like Vorpal. Some other
good choices to complement Huang Gai are Fire and Blast, because of the extra
damage bonus.

Peacock Urn, Tiger Amulet, and Tortoise Amulet are absolutely essential. I
cannot fathom why you wouldn't want them on anybody, let alone Huang Gai. The
fourth item slot is up to you. As you can see I prefer the wind scroll, but if
you don't have it, then here are some others you may prefer.

Dragon Amulet- Use this only if you REALLY like to use Musou attacks. Huang Gai
doesn't have the best Musou, so I would pass on this.

Way of the Musou- Same as Dragon Amulet, this isn't really necessary for this
character. To get this item, go to Guan Yu's escape, Wei side
and reach the fifth gate before Guan Yu. It should appear.

Speed Scroll- If you have a high level speed scroll and no Red Hare, then this
may be a tantalizing piece of equipment. Huang Gai is rather slow
so this may help you out.

Charge Bracer- Charge attacks are good. Not being able to do them is not. If
you find yourself being harassed a lot while attempting charge
attacks, then this item is for you. To get this item, to The
Yellow Turban Fortress, on the Yellow Turban side. Defeat
Zhao Yun and Guan Yu to get it to appear.

Wind Scroll- To get this item, go to Battle of Xu Chang, Shu side. Set up the
siege ramp AND defeat Xu Zhu. It should appear.

7.Huang Gai's level 10 weapon
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You could always use a Level 10 weapon! Remember, you must be playing on hard
with a level 9 weapon to recieve it.

To get Huang Gai's level 10 weapon, you must do Battle of Chi Bi, Sun Jian's
Forces. Before the fire attack succeeds, secure all strongholds. You have A LOT
of time, and Pang Tong's plot nor Zhuge Liangs prayer has to be succesful.
After you secure the strongholds, defeat Cao Ren, Cao Hong, and Cao Pi. You
should recieve a message saying you earned it. I do not know if the order you
kill the Cao's matters, but I defeated them in the order above.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.Getting the Elephant Saddle with Huang Gai
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've decided to include this section, because Huang Gai is the easiest one to
use for this undertaking.

You must do The Nanman Campaign, Nanman Forces. To get the item to appear, you
must simply ride an elephant into the enemies base. Sound simple? Well the
problem is in getting the elephant. You can follow an elephant for 30 minutes
and the rider still won't get knocked off. But maybe you can persuade the rider
to dismount for you? Huang Gai's explosives hurt allies, and dismount them as
well. When the stage starts, go to the South East until you reach the poison
marshes. There should be many elephant troops there. Next, lay an explosive
next to the elephant to knock the rider off. If it doesn't work, try laying it
in a different spot. Once on the elephant, simply ride into the enemy base.
Then the precious item appears....back at your own base. You then have to go
ALL the way back, get the item, then go back to Zhuge Liang and SMOTE HIM!!

Enjoy your elephant saddle!

P.S. The elephant saddle is a worthless piece of junk.

9.Fun things to do with Huang Gai
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to challenge mode, select endurance, then select Huang Gai.

Now, Huang Gai's explosives HURT HIM but can't KILL HIM. So what I like to do
is set explosives near the wall and let them launch me into the air. See if you
can clear the wall! I got above the top of the wall, but an invisible force
pushes you back, so you can't go OVER the wall. Damn.

If there is anything else you would like to tell me about, feel free to send
me an e-mail at [email protected]

10.Some of my Huang Gai combos
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay okay, I only have one. But I like it alot!

Try it out:

ssttttssssstm

It's 13 hits plus the musou hits. Yeah, it's not great, but it gets the job
done.

If you would like to submit Huang Gai combos send them to [email protected]

11.Outro
