/ 1. Introduction /
///////////////////
Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires is like a cross of Romance of the Threee Kingdoms
and Dynasty Warriors. In it you choose a force to start out as and then choose
strategies and choose cities to attack to unify China and the battles are in
Dynasty Warriors form. A game like this was one I was waiting for from Koei.
The game is based on a long civil war that began in China in the year 184. The
400-year rule of the Han dynasty was coming to an end and many leaders fought
for control of the land. The Three Kingdoms comes from the three major kingdoms.
Wei, ruled by Cao Cao. Shu, ruled by Liu Bei. and Wu, ruled by Sun Quan. After
Shu surrendered to Wei almost a hundred years later, Sima Yi's grandson,
Sima Yen took over Wei and renamed it Jin. Wu surrendered shortly after and
China was unified under the Jin Dynasty.
//////////////////
/ 2. Empire Mode /
//////////////////
Empire Mode is the basic gameplay mode and other than VS Mode the only one.
Since there is no general walkthrough to follow, this part will only detail the
aspects of Empire Mode.
A. Basics
B. Historical Forces
C. Regions
D. Policies
E. Skills
A. Basics
When you first start Empire Mode, you will be prompted to choose either
Historical or Fictional mode and a game difficulty. Historical mode already has
forces drawn out for you to choose according to their historical positions.
These forces will also be the ones shown in the next subsection. Fictional Mode
randomly draws up forces and you can choose any city and ruler to be. The
difficulties are Easy, Normal and Hard.
You will win when you have all 14 regions under your control. You will lose if
all of your regions are taken or 100 turns elapse.
This is the flow of each turn.
Beginning Your Turn
At the beginning of each turn the screen will show the total amount of revenue
earned as well as the total amount of gold, all currently equippable items, and
alliances.
\/
Political Tactics
You will then have to choose a policy to enact. Up to 4 of your officers will
present 2 policies to do. Doing a policy will cost gold for each one so you can
only do those you can afford. If you do not like any policies you can reject
them all. Also during this phase is the time to save your game.
\/
Confirm Results
After policies are chosen you will see the confirmation of each.
\/
Choose Battle
Now you can choose to do battle. You can either attack a region, defend one,
help an ally, or have an ally help you. You can also skip battle if you are not
up to it.
\/
Form Army
You will then choose which officers to send into battle. You can choose 3
generals and 3 lieutenants. You will control whichever general you choose.
\/
Review Battle Information
Before the battle you might get a little scene, then you will proceed to the
review screen. Here you can view your enemy's and own units, objectives for
battle, strongholds, weapon and officer info, and equip available items. Then
start battle to begin.
\/
Battle
In battle you will go through the map taking over the enemy strongholds until
finally taking over the main camp.
\/
Battle Aftermath
After a battle, if victorious, you be shown all the points earned for each
officer and which officers were captured. If defeated, you will be shown which
of your officers were captured. The conquered region will then be added to the
victor and if successfully defended nothing will change. You will then choose
which officers to recruit.
Then the turn is over and the next one is started.
Revenue-
You earn a revenue at the beginning of each turn. Each region you control
generates a certain amount of revenue. This amount will be added to your gold
at the beginning of each turn. There are some policies that increase revenue.
Saving-
Saving the game isn't as obvious in this game. During the Political Tactics
phase of the turn, where you choose a policy, press O and then choose save from
that menu.
Officer Advancement-
Each officer in the game has a total of 4 goals. As they achieve these goals
they will increase their rank, up to 5. As their rank increases, so does their
attributes and maximum number of soldiers they command. They can also increase
their rank through policies. These are the different goals they can have and
what they mean.
Points- You need to earn at least the set number of points given at the end of
victorious battles.
Proposals- You need to accept the given number of proposals for this officer.
Turns Served- The officer must serve your force for this many turns.
Areas- Your force needs to occupy the given number of Regions.
Grand General- The officer must be promoted to Grand General.
Stratehist- The officer must be promoted to Strategist.
Govern Well- Choose policies that make the people happy.
Govern Poorly- Choose policies that make the people angry.
Revenue- The officer must serve in a force with this amount of revenue.
Weapon Level- The officer must get his weapon to this level.
Weapon Improvement-
When a region under your control has a smith product, like a swordsmith or
weaponsmith, all of the specific weapons will increase one level. You can
develop smith products from policies or conquer a region that already has a
smith product. These are the different smith products.
Bladesmith- Raises level of sword type weapons 1 level.
Spearsmith- Raises level of spear type weapons 1 level.
Clubsmith- Raises level of club type weapons 1 level.
Weaponsmith- Raises level of all weapons 1 level.
Swordsmith- Raises level of sword type weapons 2 levels.
Pikesmith- Raises level of spear type weapons 2 levels.
Macesmith- Raises level of club type weapons 2 levels.
Grand General-
To achieve the rank of Grand General, an officer must be controlled on the
battlefield enough to earn at least 20,000 points. Soon after, a policy card
should offered to promote that officer. The benefit of Grand General is that
all officers on the battlefield with the general will have their weapon level
increase by one.
Strategist-
To achieve the rank of Strategist, an officer must have 15 of their proposals
accepted. Soon after a card should be offered to promote them. The benefit of
this rank is that all proposals from this officer will cost 15% less than
their original price.
Emperor-
To achieve the rank of Emperor you will need enough regions and have accepted
enough good or bad policies. A card should then be offered soon after to
promote your ruler. The benefit of Emperor is that the total amount of
revenue increases.
Alliances-
If you ally with another force. You cannot attack any regions under that
force's control nor can they. Sometimes they will ask for help in a battle and
you can do the same.
Good/Bad Governing-
The government policies can either have good or poor results. The lighter grey
ones are good while the darker ones are poor. Good governing can get you to be
a good emperor whilst poor governing can make you a tyrant. Good governing can
also cause local troops to help you when defense is needed. Poor governing may
turn them against you. Good/poor governing also has to do with certain
officers' goals.

over the entire force.

Officers-
Displays the number of officers in that force.
Troops-
Displays the total number of troops under all of your officers' command.
Officer Count-
You can recruit officers by hiring them from policies or hiring them after
capturing them in battle. The number of officers you can have depends on the
number of regions you control. If you have one region you can only have 3
generals and 3 lieutenants. And the number will increase by one for each new
region you take. However once at 8 it gets up to 10 and will not exceed that no
matter how many more regions you get. If you hire an officer and go over your
limit you will have to dismiss a currently hired officer. If you lose a region
from an attacking force your officer count will not decrease.
There is no multiplayer in Empire Mode.
To change an officer model, select that particular officer as the Player before

This subsection will explain the icons on the battle screen. I'll start with
the top left and circle around clockwise.
Enemy Life Gauge
The red bar in the corner dictates how much life each enemy has. It will
display the life of the last enemy you attacked. As you attack them the life
will go down and when it is depleted, the enemy is defeated and you get a KO.
Enemy Info
This appears right under the Enemy Life Gauge. The stars indicate the enemy's
morale. The more stars, the higher the morale. The word under the morale stars
indicates who's unit the troop is apart of. And the name acroos from it is
either the soldier's rank or the officer's name.
Combo Count
When you attack an enemy with at least 5 consecutive attacks, under the enemy
info will be a combo count displayed in blue dictating the combo you have done.

will disappear. When all circles are gone and there is at least one circle for
the attacking troops, the stronghold will be captured.

Announces yourself and causes the enemy to lose their guard. This can be done
on foot or on a horse, but not on an elephant.
Dazed-
When your character is dazed, noted when your character can't move and has
stars around their head, repeatedly press L1 and L2 or any attack buttons to
quicken recovery.
Deadlocks-
When two enemies attack at the same time they might enable a weapon deadlock.
To win the deadlock, repeatedly press Square. If successful you will push the
enemy back making them vulnerable. If you lose you will be pushed back and your
Musou Gauge depletes. If it is a draw you will both be pushed back and your
Musou Gauge depletes.
C. Battle Information
A few things about the different types of battles. There are Offensive battles,
Defensive battles, Ally Offensive battles, and Ally Defensive battles. In
Offensive and Defensive battles you can choose up to 3 Generals and 3
Lieutenants. In Ally battles you only choose your player. Sometimes ally's will
request you help in their battles. Not helping them doesn't lower your
relations.
In Offensive battles, for both ally's and your own, you will either win by
defeating the enemy ruler if participating in that battle, or taking the enemy
main camp, indicated with a circle around it on the map in the pause menu.
Defensive battles can be won by defeating the enemy Grand General or by
allowing time to run out.
Before starting a battle up, you should equip items that you feel would suit
you. If you only have a few you might as well use what you can unless saving
them. Also review the unit information and objectives.
You should basically go through the stage occupying the enemy strongholds that
surround your own territroy to fortify your defenses and offenses. Take
strongholds by defeating all enemies occupying them. If your main camp or main
stronghold is taken you will lose the battle. You will also lose if you are
defeated.
When you defeat an enemy officer, they will retreat for a while, but will later
reappear in their main camp. After defeating them 3 times, they will show up
again and challenge you to a duel. If you accept, a duel will take place.
Defeat them to remove them from the stage. If you are defeated you lose. You
can refuse to duel and beat them normally and still remove them from the stage.
After winning the battle, you will receive points which depend on your KOs,
defeated officers, time, and casualties. After the points are distributed, you
will be shown the officers you captured. When defending or attacking a region
without a ruler in it, you will most likely capture 1 or 2. But when you
capture a region with the ruler residing on it, you will capture all officers
participating in that battle and take all of the ruler's regions.
Morale-
My hopes were that everyone over 11 would know what morale is, but stupidity
prevailed. I would have explained it anyways, but I'm going to reluctantly
explain it now.
Morale affects the army's ability to fight. If your morale is hight you have a
strong will to fight while if your morale is low you barely have the will to
fight. If the enemy has a high morale they will defeat your soldiers and
officers more easily. The same goes for you. Defeating soldiers and officers
will lower the enemy morale as it will lower yours. Morale is indicated by the
stars by a character's name.

/ 4. VS. Mode /
///////////////
VS. Mode is the only mode where you can play with another player or the
computer. There are 4 different courses, each with different rules.
A. Vanquish
B. Pilfer

a high attack ability works best.
Rules-

-Use "Announce" when the summons gauge is full to surround your opponent with
powerful enemies.
-The player will be revived as many times as needed.
Tips-
When a player gets the statuette item they will acquire summon points. The
gauge is to the right of th screen. The fuller the gauge, the more powerful the
troops that can be summoned. To summon troops use the Announce command, push
down R3.
B. Pilfer
In this game you must score more points than your opponent taking treasure to

the less weight they can carry.

Double Treasure Bag- 3 points- Twice as heavy as a treasure bag
Treasure Chest- 6 points- Three times heavier than a treasure bag
Do the math!

points by knocking enemies off the walls.
Rules-
-Earn points by knocking enemy troops off of the walls. The one with the most
points when time runs out wins.

///////////////
/ 7. Officers /
///////////////
This section deals with information on all the officers. The information
includes, their goals, weapon-type, model, and skills. Some time I will also
add a little history on certain officers. They are listed in alphabetical
order. Some of the models I'm a little iffy on so if you find any mistakes
please let me know. Also remember that the weapon type only refers to one of
the three types of weapons, sword, spear, or club. For instance, Da Qiao uses
fans, but her weapon type is a club.

/ 8. Weapons /
//////////////
Each character has their own unique weapon. These weapons have levels and as
their levels increase so does their power and number of attacks. The weapons
will be listed down from the officer who owns them and then all information
will be listed about them. Level 11 weapons have additional effects
corresponding to the items listed beside them. Also, to get a Lv11 weapon
you need to have an officer become a Grand General. This will increase all
weapons up one rank and you can only get the 11th one with an officer with
this title.

The highest these will raise your weapons is to Lv10. You will need to have
an officer promoted to Grand General before your officers can obtain Lv11
weapons. This rank raises the Lv of all your officers' weapons by 1.
