“Boku no Natsuyasumi 2: Umi no Bouken Hen” (My Summer Vacation 2:
Sea Adventure) is a summer adventure game released on PS2 by
Millennium Kitchen in 2002. While the pleasure of this game is to explore,
I hope this guide would help players who would like to experience all
events (sections 2 and 3), complete their collection (sections 5, 6 and 7),
seek some tips and get to know more about the game (sections 8, 9 and
10).

1. Locations
Arranged in alphabetical order, this section introduces the different
places of this game, e.g. the names used in this walkthrough, how to
reach them, etc.
- Akaneya
Akaneya is the guest house where Boku, the protagonist, stays in for his
summer holiday. The family, including Boku, lives on the first floor, while
other guests stay on the second floor. On the second floor, there are three
guest rooms, a lobby, a kitchen, a washroom, a bathroom, and a balcony
where clothes are being dried. On the first floor, you can find Boku’s room,
the cousins’ room, the telephone, the living room, and a veranda outside
the living room. Near the veranda, there is an oak tree where you can
catch beetles. Running across the corridor on the first floor, you can reach
the dining room and the kitchen, which is also a beach house that serves
like a cafe during daytime.
- cave
The cave appears in the inner mountain on 20th August after the
earthquake. To reach the cave, leave Akaneya from the bathroom and
cross the little bridge at the right side of the screen. The other end of the
cave leads to the locked gate near the secret beach. At the lowest section
of the cave, you can swim into the outer bay and emerge from the
bottom of a waterfall.
- charcoal burning hut
The charcoal burning hut is where Uncle Wolf (ookamijijii) works. After
creating the log bridge from 15th August onwards, you can cross the
bridge, pass through Fukurou Mountain and reach the charcoal burning
hut. There is an oak tree by the hut where you can catch beetles. Going
through the other side of the hut leads you to the waterwheel and the
lake of Okusawa.
- clinic
You can reach the clinic by going up the slope near the old hut and
passing the park and Yasuko’s home. The doctor (the grandfather of
Yasuko and Hikari) and Nagisa the nurse work here from the morning to
the afternoon before 4:00pm, but the clinic only closes at night after
7:00pm. There are three rooms in the clinic: the doctor’s examination
room, the washroom and the ward. There is a backdoor at the clinic
which leads to the Sakura River. You can catch fireflies at the entrance of
the clinic at night.
- Fukurou Mountain
Fukurou Mountain can be reached by crossing the log bridge. From 15th
August to 18th August, you can create a log bridge beside the water field
by cutting down the withered tree with an axe, or you can wait for the
bridge to automatically appear on 19th August. You can find one of the
missing rocket valves on Fukurou Mountain.
- graveyard
Leave Akaneya from its entrance, turn left, pass by the yellow car, turn
right, pass the fortune-telling jizou statues, go up the stairs and you will
reach the graveyard. You can meet You (the boy who makes the rocket)
here from 5th to 8th August.
- inner bay
Inner bay is where you swim if you dive directly from the area around
Akaneya, the seashore, the pier and the staircase near You’s home.
- inner mountain
Inner mountain ranges from the area with the telephone pole bridge
(before crossing to Okusawa) to the area where a cave would appear on
20th August. The middle area is the top of the inner mountain.
- jizou statues
The jizou statues will tell fortune when you knock then by pressing the
circle button. If you get “excellent luck”, you are more likely to catch rare
insects and big fishes. Leave Akaneya from its entrance, turn left, pass by
the yellow car, turn right and you will be in front of the jizou statues.
- Okusawa
This is an area that opens on 9th August. You can reach this area by
crossing the telephone pole bridge. There is a secret garden, a lake and a
wasabi field in Okusawa. You can find one of the rocket valves here too.
- old hut
The old hut is inhabited by stray cats. It is located in the same screen
where the “little river” is (as named by Boku), one screen before the
entrance of the park.
- outer bay
The outer bay refers to the other half of the ocean, which is deeper than
the inner bay. You can reach the outer bay by swimming past the pier,
past the seaweed from You’s home, or you can dive into it from the secret
beach and the lowest section of the cave. There are some waterfalls and
a sunken ship in the outer bay.
- park
The park has a number of facilities: a swing, a slide, a revolving whirl, a
sandpit, a see-saw and a set of bars. You can normally find Hikari by the
see-saw at daytime. In front of the revolving whirl is the stairs to the pier;
behind the swing is the stairs to the slope that leads to the home of
Yasuko and Hikari.
- pier
The pier is where Boku arrives at Tonomi. You can find the boatman here
at 8am and 5pm. The doctor fishes at the tip of the pier on Sundays. You
can climb the stair and fish at the back of the pier, facing the outer bay.
- Sakura River
This is the river by the backdoor of the clinic. It running through several
locations to the inner mountain.
- seaside workshop
The seaside workshop is where you can obtain the fishing rod from Uncle
and find the axe from 15th August onwards. Uncle will be here at daytime
from 2nd to 7th August.
- secret base
The secret base is a tree house where you can have an insect sumo
wrestling game with the cousins. To call the cousins, kick the wind vane or
examine the mini boxing ring on the table. You can climb to the higher
part of the secret base to enjoy the view if you defeat the queen beetle.
- secret bay
The secret bay is located in the outer bay. Swim by the edge of the cliff
from You’s home; just when you reach the outer bay, dive deep and find
an underwater tunnel that leads to the secret bay. There is a waterfall, a
bottle cap but no place to land in the secret bay. You can get a diary entry
about this when you first reach this area.
- secret beach
Hikari will lead you to the secret beach on 7th August. The secret beach is
one of the two areas in the outer bay where you can land.
- secret garden
The secret garden is located in Okusawa. Cross the telephone pole bridge,
jump down from the step, pass the tree with the beehive and you can
reach the secret garden.
- Totten Mountain
The entrance to Totten Mountain is beside the wasabi field in Okusawa.
The entrance gate will only be opened after defeating Takeshi’s secret
weapon. The earliest day that you can gain access to Totten Mountain is
23rd August.
- wasabi field
Wasabi field is the terraced field in okusawa, with the entrance to Totten
Mountain nearby. Passing through the wasabi field, you can see the
waterwheel (but you cannot reach the charcoal burning hut). If there is a
water puddle in front of the gate, you can catch two of the butterflies
which can only be caught after rain. Please do not confuse the “wasabi
field” with “water field”.
- water field
The water field is where you can cross the log bridge to reach Fukurou
Mountain (and the charcoal burning hut). Please do not confuse it with
“wasabi field”.
- Yasuko and Hikari’s home
This is the residence of Yasuko, Hikari and the doctor. There is a garden
beside Yasuko’s room. You can find Hikari’s little farm if you go down the
ladder from the garden.
- You’s home
The boy who makes the rocket lives in a house by the sea. Instead of going
up the stairs to the graveyard, turn right and go all the way up the slope
to reach You’s home.

2. Daily activities
Here is a list of stuff that you can do every day and some explanation.
a. Morning exercise
- If you sleep before 11pm at the previous night, you will
automatically take part in the morning exercise at the park. All you do is
to watch the clip and you can press the start button to skip watching it.
b. Watering the morning glory
- Boku’s morning glory is that on the right and it will blossom after 9
days of watering. It is up to you to water the cousins’ morning glories on
the middle and on the left. If the cousins’ morning glories blossoms
earlier than yours, you can get a different diary entry (but the priority of
this entry is low). If the flowers do not blossom before 13th August, they
will wither. Blossomed morning glories will wither on 18th August the
latest.

- You can talk to Hikari and she will tell you where you can see special
events. See section 4 for more details.

well as other snacks. All the above items can be purchased at Akaneya
dining room.

4. Hikari’s event hints
Hikari’s “fortune-telling” is the in-game guide for the events.
Starting from 2nd August, talk to Hikari at daytime and she will show you
where you can see special events on that day. On the fortune-telling
scene, places where important events of the main story occur are marked
with a red circle, while places where side events happen (e.g. events that
tell you more about the characters and the background of the story) are
represented by the numbers that are not marked.
At daytime, you can usually find Hikari in the park. Hikari will be at the
seashore with Yasuko on the 6th, 11th and 23rd, and at home from 16th to
18th. She can also be found on the second floor of Akaneya on 13th, in the
graveyard on 14th, in the old hut on 15th and in You’s home on 27th.
At night, you can often ask Hikari about special events of the next day, but
sometimes the results would be different from what you can get on the
next day, which is the more accurate one.
The following is a list of the places that Hikari advises Boku to visit. The

6. Insect collection
You can take out the insect catching net by choosing it from the menu or
simply by pressing R1.
The insects caught will be stored in the green cage. There are a few
things that you can do at the screen of the insect collection set:
a. Record the data of an insect on the notebook by placing it in the big
box.
b. Store the insects alive by moving them to the brown wooden boxes at
the right side of the screen.
c. Make them into a specimen by injecting them with the pink liquid.
Insects that have been made into specimen can only be stored in the
brown wooden boxes.
d. Free an insect by putting it to the photo at the upper left hand corner of
the screen.

7. Fishing
7.1. Basics
To start fishing, stand by a river or the sea and press the triangle button
to take out the fishing rod.
After taking out the rod, you can press the square button to:
a) view the fish you caught;
b) choose the style of rod for fishing in the sea;
c) choose the style of rod for fishing in freshwater.
If you need to change the style of rod, press the circle button. The styles
that you can choose are listed as follows (the order is the same as
displayed in the game):
- Style of rod for fishing in the sea
sabiki (サビキ)
uki (浮き)
myaku (ミャク)
nage (投げ)
- Style of rod for fishing in freshwater
gebari (毛バリ)
uki (浮き)
myaku (ミャク)
(Since I have no knowledge about fishing, I will use the Romanized
characters for the style of rod in this walkthrough.)
Next, press the circle button to start fishing. If you are not using the
gebari style, you have to select a fishing bait. The five fishing baits are
eunicidae worm (イソメ/isome), crayfish (ザリガニ/zarigani), red stone
crab (ベニイシ/beniishi), rock crab (イワガニ/iwagani) and
earthworm(ミミズ/mimizu). You can find them randomly at the seashore,
under stone plate by the old hut, under the wooden plate at the water
field and in Fukurou Mountain.
Unlike the insects and the bottle caps, you will not get a diary entry even
if you have caught all of them; however, if you catch a marbled flounder
(マコガレイ/makogarei), striped beakfish (イシダイ/ishidai), or charr

9. Insect sumo wrestling
The insect sumo wrestling game takes place at your cousins’ secret base.
It is also an important element in the game because you can only reach
certain areas only by defeating the king beetles. This section provides tips
and guidance on this insect sumo wrestling mini-game.
9.1. Catching beetles
You can catch a beetle by kicking the oak tree (press the circle button) at
several locations: near the veranda at Akaneya, in the forest behind the
bathroom of Akaneya, by the telephone pole bridge, by the charcoal
burning hut and on the way to Totten Mountain. After obtaining sugar
water (from the sink in the kitchen after dinner), you can press the
triangle button in front of the oak tree to spread sugar water to the tree
so that you can catch the beetles easily. You may catch up to three beetles
from one tree at a time.
9.2. Basics of the game
At the secret base, kick the weather vane (looks like a cartoon chicken) at
the right of the secret base or investigate the ring at the centre by
pressing the circle button; then Takeshi and Shigeru will come and have
an insect sumo wrestling game with you. You may talk to Takeshi for tips
and tricks.
Once you place the chosen beetle to the ring, you can press the triangle
button to agitate your beetle so that they would push forward faster;
however, as you increase the agitation level (represented by the red bar),
the stamina of your beetle (represented by the blue bar) would decrease.
Click the bell at the lower right hand corner to start the game; you can
choose the level of difficulty at the upper left hand corner in-between
battles.
A beetle will win when it pushes its opponent out of the ring, when its
opponent runs out of stamina, when it turns its opponent over, when it
crushes its opponent, etc.
You can name a beetle if it wins 10 times.
9.3. Defeating the king beetles
From 10th August onwards, you can take the challenge to fight Takeshi’s
queen beetle. If you defeat it, Takeshi will allow you to climb to the higher
area in the secret base to enjoy the view. Recommended beetles for use
are kin’oni kuwagata (No. 63 キンオニクワガタ, found in Akaneya in
the evening and at night) and miyama kuwagata (No. 53 ミヤマクワガ
タ, found in Okusawa).
The great king beetle appears from 22nd onwards. You can defeat it easily
if your beetle has won for more than 50 times. Recommended beetles for
use are kin’oni kuwagata (No. 63 キンオニクワガタ, found in Akaneya
in the evening and at night), kaputomushi (No. 60 カブトムシ, found by
charcoal burning hut) and ookuwagata (No. 54 オオクワガタ, found in
Okusawa). The strongest of the beetles should be kin’oni kuwagata.
After you defeat the great king beetle, Takeshi would use his secret
weapon on the next day. All of the beetles mentioned above are
recommended for use in this battle; and the key to win is to store a lot of
beetles in your cage so that you can continue fighting after any of them
loses. If you win, the route to Totten Mountain would be open and Takeshi
will show you the entrance.
9.4. Swapping beetles
You may swap beetles with your cousins by clicking the notebook at the
lower left hand corner of the screen with the green cage. There are two
beetles that can only be obtained by swapping, which are Aegus
laevicollis (No. 64 nebuto kuwagata/ネブトクワガタ) and Lucanus
maculifemoratus (No. 65 fujimiya kuwagata/フジミヤマクワガタ). You
may swap beetles using insects other than beetles.
The following list shows some of the insects of high swapping values.
Insects with the “big” and king icon are of higher values too so if you find
it difficult to catch the insects listed below, you may try the big and
king-sized ones. The numbers below corresponds with those in the insect
guide and you can check section 6 for where to catch them.

10. Other tips and tricks
a. Flow of time
Time progresses as you move from one area to another, stop swimming,
finish fishing and end the insect sumo wrestling game. The following
shows the progress rate in different modes.
- Area surrounding Akaneya at daytime and inside buildings
Slow: 4 min Normal: 7 min Fast: 10 min
- Areas outside the surroundings of Akaneya and all other areas at night
Slow: 3 min Normal: 5 min Fast: 7 min
- One round of insect sumo wrestling game
Slow: 3 min Normal: 5 min Fast: 8 min
- Swimming (Time will only progress when you reach land.)
Slow: 15 min Normal: 30 min Fast: 51 min
- Fishing (Time will progress when you choose the “stop fishing”
option.)
Slow: 10 min Normal: 20 min Fast: 33 min
b. Getting Tanned
The extent to which Boku gets tanned affects his appearance and the
message of photo taken on the last day. If Boku reaches the highest rank
of tanning, he will look darker than the cousins. Since time only flows
when you move from one area to another, you can leave Boku in the sun
to get tanned faster. If Boku does not take off his T-shirt often, only part of
his skin would get tanned.
c. Poking the beehives
You may poke the beehives on certain trees as a convenient way to return
to Akaneya. The beehives are located in: in the area after crossing the
river from the backdoor of the clinic, the entrance of the secret garden,
by the wasabi field in Okusawa and on Fukurou Mountain.
d. Riding the bicycle
If you look closely, you can spot a bicycle at the entrance of Akaneya. You
may ride the bicycle to move around faster and save time. By saving time,
it refers to the real time but not the time in the game because, as
explained, time only progress when you move from one area to another.
However, using the bicycle may not be very convenient because you have
to get off the bicycle if you want to go up some steps and stairway. After
you get off the bicycle, it will remain where it is until the next day, when
it magically returns to the front entrance of Akaneya.
Personally, I use the bicycle when exploring at night because most areas
which require the climbing of steps are shut off then.
