3. Introduction
____________________________

Greetings! This is my first faq, and i'm anxious to hear what you think of it!
Even flames will be accepted! If there's anything more i can add, please tell me
through my e-mail! This faq will be for the PS2 version of Beatmania 3rd style.
Beatmania IIDX was first introduced in 1999, due to the growing popularity of
the original Beatmania. This game has 7 keys, compared to BM's 5 keys, and
instead of animated images on the side of the screen, they use real-time/CG
graphics instead, which are leaps and bounds better-looking. Also, the 1P side
has the turntable to the left of the keys, instead of vice-versa. And blue notes
are no longer juxtaposed on the line sepearting the white notes. Instead, all
blue notes have their own column in which they fall. You'll notice that although
this game was labeled the 3rd style, the 1st and 2nd styles were never released
for consoles. 'Wonder why...

4a. Arcade mode
____________________________

Now, onto the meat'n 'taters of the game! Here's how it works (note: this is
assuming you got the konami-brand BMIIDX controller):

1: Notes will fall to the bottom, to a giant yellowish line.

2: Blue notes are the black keys on your IIDX controller, white notes are, duh,
the white keys on your controller, and red notes are for the turntable.

3: Hit the corresponding keys when the notes arrives at the bottom
line. There's 5 general grades as to how accurate your note was to the beat of
the music:

Flashing greats (a.k.a "Just greats"): On beat!
Great: SLIGHTLY off-beat
Good: Off-beat
Bad: VERY off beat!
Poor: You actually missed that note!

4: At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a bar with a percentage at the
upper-right end of it. You start with 22%. Your task is to get the bar to the
red zone (IOW, at 80%) by the time the song ends.

5: At the end of each song you'll be shown the overall results of that song,
like how many notes of each grade you got. If you've failed the song (you didn't
get 80%), you'll be given the chance to continue. If you've succeded, you'll
move on to the next song!

6: You have 3 songs, and if you performed well enough overall, you'll get an
extra stage!

7: At the end of your 3rd/Extra stage, you get a final letter grade, and if your
overall score is high enough, you may even get to inscribe a 4-letter DJ
moniker, to be inscribed on the BMIIDX hall of fame (IOW, a high score screen)!

Now, i'll describe the modes for arcade mode:

Light 7/14: Basically, an easier version of 7/14 Key. Less notes to deal with.
Beginners should start here.

5/10 Key: The 2 keys to the far right are taken over by the computer. Other than
that, the notes are the same as their 7/14 Key counterparts. This makes it
harder than Light 7/14 (usually), because there's no "Light 5/10" mode.

7/14 key: The trademark mode of the IIDX series! Think you have what it takes to
tackle this mode?

Expert mode: This mode requires you to play a set of 5 pre-selected songs in
order, where you only have one bar to complete all 5 songs with, starting at
100%. It's also MUCH harder to replenish the % bar than the arcade mode one.
However, it's much harder to deplete it, too!

4b. Free Mode
__________________________

Play as long as you want, without any interruptions. You don't even have to go
back to the title screen to change modifiers like Random or Auto-Scratch.

There's only one catch- to play songs in Free Mode, you must have played them in
Arcade Mode (it doesn't matter if you've passed them, or what difficulty you do
them on). Except for .59, that is; it's avaliable from the get-go.

4d. Options
__________________________

Set the game difficulty, screen type (arcade or original; arcade will be really
squished if you don't have a widescreen TV), movie, brightness, etc.

It's all in English, so there's no need to explain, really...

4e. Modifiers
__________________________

Put one or more of these on to give yourself a challenge!

On the Main Menu, press the Select button to access the modifier menu. There,
you can set these modifiers:

High/Low Speed- High speed makes songs easier to read, because it spreads the
notes out, but if you turn it up TOO high on a fast song, you might not be able
to read the notes. Low Speed... I don't know why they have it. All it does is
make things HARDER to read.

Random- Mixes the notes up. Makes some songs easier (songs with scaling, for
example), some songs harder (songs with fast patterns, like V), or it could go
either way, depending on what note arrangement you get.

Double- Lets you play 14 Key, Light 14, etc. You need 2 controllers to play this
mode (well, you can play one side and watch the other side kill you, but that's
no fun).

Autoscratch- Cheater. :P This modifier has the game take over the turntable for
you, which lets you concentrate all your efforts on the keys. Using it's a waste
of time; it doesn't help you build any skills, and you can't set records while
using Autoscratch.

Battle Mode- If you need a demo of what Battle Mode does, let the game sit on
the title screen for a while. It basically splits the notes up between the 1
player and 2 player sides.

Mirror- Just like it sounds, it reverses the notes. If a note was on the far
left key, it would be on the far right key when Mirror is activated.

Hidden- Notes dissapear halfway down. Can be combined with Sudden for a new
effect.

Sudden- Notes appear halfway down. Can be combined with Hidden for a new effect.

Hidden/Sudden- Notes appear for a very short amount of time right in the middle.

4f. Original Course setting
________________________________

This mode lets you make your own Expert Courses. You can edit up to 5- if you
don't edit them, they'll be 5 stages of 5.1.1. 7 Key in a row. >.<

You can't set records on these things, unfortunately. The only real use for this
mode is if you want to make a "Favorite" course with all your favorite songs.

One more thing- this mode must be unlocked. To the Unlocking section we go!
