This FAQ is about "4x4 Evo", the 4x4 racing game from Terminal
Reality, published by Gathering of Developers (i.e. Take 2 /
GlobalStar).
0.1 A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR
There doesn't seem to be any FAQ for this budget game, so here it
comes.
This is a FAQ, NOT a manual, not that you really need a manual to
play this game.
This USG only covers the PC Version. I can't vouch for any
application on other platforms as I only have the PC version. A
Mac version and a Dreamcast version also exists, but again, I
only have the PC version.
Some of you may recognize my name as the editor for the XCOM and
XCOM2: TFTD FAQ's, among others.

I am just a game player who decided to write my own FAQs when the
ones I find don't cover what I want to see. Lots of people like
what I did, so I kept doing it.

1 General Info
1.1 THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can you send me the game (or portions thereof)?
A: No.
Q: Can you send me the manual? (or portions thereof)
A: You can download it from the publisher's website. Not that
there's much in it.
Q: Can you tell me how to play the game?
A: Read the manual please.
Q: How big is the install?
A: About 284 MB, not counting any custom tracks and such.
Q: Is there a patch?
A: Yes, there are some patches that brings up the build # to 57.
You can find the patches on Fileplanet and various other hosts,
or on publisher's website.
Q: What about some cheat codes?

Q: What game modes are there?
A: Quick race (race against AI in equivalent car), hot lap (race
against your own ghost car), career, multiplayer (race other
player in equivalent car)
Q: I have 4X4 Evolution Limited Edition. Where's feature
________?
A: That's "4x4 Evo Lite". It doesn't have Chevy or Ford trucks,
Career Mode, NOR any series and multiplayer support. Read the
README!
Q: Can I upgrade/patch the Limited Edition into the full edition?
A: Not legally, and I don't do anything illegal.
Q: Can I add custom tracks and trucks?
A: Yes, see the end of this FAQ.

1.2 HISTORY
Terminal Reality is a developer with a long history. They started
under Apogee, distributor of Castle Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
Their first title was Terminal Velocity, a 3D shooter that amazed
people at what software rendering can do. TRI was contracted by
Microsoft to create custom versions, which became known as Fury
3, and spawned a sequel called Hellbender.
Later, they also created Monster Truck Madness and Monster Truck
Madness 2 for Microsoft Games.
4 x 4 Evo was their attempt in joining the racing sim market, by
creating a product that appeals to variety of people.
1.3 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
These are the MINIMUM required. Better the hardware, more
features can be enabled.

4x4 Evolution supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME,
Windows 2000 as long as DirectX 7a or higher is installed and the
minimum system requirements are met.
Windows NT 4.0 will be limited to OpenGL or software rendering.
1.4 HOW DOES IT PLAY?
From the README file:
4x4 Evolution is an off-road racing game. 4x4 Evolution allows
you to take your favorite SUV or truck and race it in realistic
looking off-road locations. To accurately capture the feel of off-
road racing we designed the game so that there are no artificial
walls to keep you on the track. In 4x4 Evolution the tracks are
completely open and you can drive anywhere that your truck will
take you. There are no walls to confine you, so this is a race
from checkpoint to checkpoint. If you can find a better route
than the racetrack itself - take it. In order to find out where
the next checkpoint is follow the green arrow at the top of your
screen (F key by default toggles it on and off). If the arrow is
green you are headed in the right direction. If the arrow is red
you are heading in the wrong direction. The upper left hand of
the screen shows important information such as what position you
are in, your time compared to the last lap, and what lap you are
on. The map on the upper right hand side of the screen gives you
a general idea of the course and where the other trucks are.
Watch the map carefully as your competitors do not always drive
on the track. If you see a competitor taking a short cut, you
might want to try follow (it may be a faster path). The lower
portion of the screen shows you your tachometer, speedometer, and
gear position.
There is also a career mode, where you start with 30000, and you
buy a vehicle to start racing. As you win, invest in better parts
to improve your vehicle and/or buy new ones. Your ultimate
objective is to win all the races and series available.
There is also a quick race, where you race against some AI
opponents on tracks of your choice, or under random conditions.
There is also hot lap, where you race against your own "ghost
car". This is great for practice mode to help you improve your
track times.
Finally, there is multiplayer support for racing online.
1.5 BUGS AND FIXES
There are two patches available, build 56 and build 57. No
further details available.
1.6 EXPANSION PACKS? SEQUELS? RELATED TITLES?
4x4 Evo 2 is already out. Apparently Ford cannot come to an
agreement, so all the Ford vehicles are gone.
A previous game by the same folks is Microsoft's Monster Truck
Madness series.
1.7 WORDING NOTE
From now on, I'll just refer to the game as "4E". It's easier
than typing "4x4 Evo" each and every time.
2 Driving Tips
2.1 GENERAL TECHNIQUES
2.1.1 Bump them hard!
There is no car damage in 4E, so you can bump the other cars as
much as you like.
On the other hand, bumping slow you down and may let other cars
get ahead. If you bump someone from behind, you actually help him
accelerate.
So bump other cars in the side, not the rear.
2.1.2 Learn the Shortcuts
Every course has shortcuts, some more than others. Some are
useful, others are not. Observe the AI and see what routes they
take, and see if you can do better.

2.1.3 Learn to slide into turns
Trucks, by its nature, understeers. You turn, but it doesn't
quite go where you want it to turn. You need to set the balance
to more oversteer. In fact, as much oversteer as you can handle.
If you get a lot of oversteer and you're constantly correcting
(i.e. slipping and sliding) then that's bad. If you end up
swapping ends that's bad too. Usually I drive with 40/60 balance,
sometimes 35/65.
2.1.4 Pick the right tires
Check the condition EVERY race and change tires if needed!
Picking the right tires can be very important in getting
traction. Here's some general rules:
Narrow cut (i.e. slick) -- NEVER (unless you have an all tarmac
course, and there really isn't one.
Medium cut (default) -- useful in most dry conditions, slides a
bit in mud, but still doable. Best on gravel and rock.
Deep cut -- use when wet. However, you won't slide around corners
much. Best in mud, or sand.
Studded -- use on snow, like "arctic wasteland".
2.1.5 Anticipate the turn
These are trucks and SUVs, not sports cars. They don't turn on a
dime.
You can turn BEFORE you actually need to. Because the vehicle
understeers, you slide a bit, and you end up aligned perfectly
into the corner.
Just don't turn yourself into a tree or any other obstacle.
2.1.6 upgrade those vehicles
Every upgrade (except appearance mods) has a positive impact on
your vehicle's performance. Start with the smaller items that
produce nice big increases, and slowly make your way up to the
upgrades that cost a couple thousand. Get torque mods first,
weight reduction mods and brake mods can wait.
2.1.7 don't get too much air
If you're flying, you're not accelerating. Flying (i.e. "getting
air") actually slows you down. If you took off at 80 mph, when
you land you'll be probably be down to 60 mph. Not to mention the
time you spent bouncing. So when you crest a hill, instead of
going full speed over and get some air, you may want to slow down
a little and accelerate DOWN the hill instead WITH your tires on
the ground.
2.1.8 don't jump into a turn
If you see a jump just before a turn, SLOW DOWN! If you're in the
air, you can't steer! Go full speed into a turn just means you'll
end up way beyond the turn and have to double back.
2.1.9 practice, practice, practice
Practice makes perfect, it really does.
2.2 ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
2.2.1 Learn each turn's entry and exit speed in different
conditions
Each turn has a particular entry and exit speed that depends on
your car's current setup and the ground condition (i.e. dry vs.
wet).
Try different car setup (more oversteer vs. less, more brake bias
aft vs. less, different tires) and see which one you prefer. Save
the setup. Retry the test every time you get more upgrades, as
many of them will affect handling.
2.2.2 Shallower the turn, higher the exit speed
The more gentle you can make the turn, the higher the speed you
can maintain through the turn. Sharp turns causes the tires to
slide sideways, dissipating your momentum.
This would usually require you to cut across the corner.

2.2.3 Set Brake Bias Aft
Buy the brake bias controller, and set brake bias aft a bit.
Brake bias basically concentrates the brake force in the
direction you choose. Normally, it's set 50/50, which means front
and back gets the same amount.
If you set brake force bias to front, the front will lock up
first, and the tail may break loose (esp. if the car's turning).
You also lose steering control during braking as your front
wheels are locked. However, you stop quickly.
If you set brake force bias to aft, the rear wheel will lock up
first, letting you steer a bit with front, and you may get a bit
improved maneuverability. However, you won't stop as fast.
Try setting it back as far as far possible without losing
control. Try 45/65 to start.
This is more important if you have a pedal set, as you can do
proportional throttle/brake.
2.2.4 Do some quick races and just follow the AI
The AI will show you routes that you may not have thought to take
before. Save the replay and study the route carefully, and see if
you can duplicate their feats, and if it is actually faster.
Often, it really is.
Once you got the route down, do hot laps until you can
consistently match your record.
2.2.5 Plan at least one checkpoint ahead
As you are about to go through this checkpoint, you should be
planning ahead and looking for the shortest route to the next
checkpoint.
Optimally, the best route will let you position yourself to
accelerate out of the checkpoint pointing on the optimum path to
the next checkpoint. By thinking ahead instead of just reacting
to the road, you will automatically make "shortcuts" and cut
fractions of a second off your lap time.
2.3 SOME OTHER TRICKS
2.3.1 Maximize visibility
By default visibility is only like 20. You want to set it to 30
or 40 so you can see further ahead. Turn off the graphics
"goodies" to improve the frame rate.
2.3.2 Career mode: stop the race if you are losing
Yes, it's allowed in the Career mode races. As long as nobody has
finished the race, you can quit the race and receive a DNF, and
you can retry the race, at NO penalty.
So if you did something really stupid like ran into a tree a few
times you can just try again. After all, you're just racing AI
bots. They won't complain.
2.4 CAR MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES
2.4.1 Start with 2WD?
Some have suggested that one should start with the 2WD version of
the stock vehicle, and add the race transfer case to make it 4WD.
This supposedly results in weight savings over starting with the
4WD model.
While this isn't tested, it sounds plausible enough.
2.4.2 More torque first
You want the cheap upgrades that add torque. That improves
acceleration. Things like sports air filter, cold air intake, and
such are cheap and produce a few percent improvements. It's when
you get into like $5000 for 2% then you may want to stop for a
moment and consider something else first.
2.4.3 Weight reduction can wait
Weight reduction doesn't really do that much.
3 The Vehicles
All major American and Japanese 4x4 manufacturers (except Subaru
and Isuzu) are represented. What you won't find are any
Europeans.
Please note that it is possible to convert any 2WD vehicle to 4WD
by adding a race transfer case, not just the race machines. This
would actually save a bit of weight.
Instead of listing them by make and model, I'll list them by
horsepower per pound. The models with a * is "best in class".
There are EIGHT classes, four of each for truck and SUV: compact,
standard, full-size, and race.
Also keep in mind that these are UNMODIFIED versions of the
trucks. Once you modify them, anything goes. With full set of
mods, it's possible to push the HP of the race trucks up to
almost 1500 HP. That is a LOT of power, and most of the mods will
increase the torque as well.

4 The Parts
There are LOTS of parts you can buy to add onto your vehicle. Not
all parts will be available to your trucks. Many of these parts
also have pre-requisites. See the description for details.
CASEMAN will offer you some advice on what to get.
I don't see the point of listing the prices, but I may add them
later. For the actual effects, please see the final chart. The
actual effects are listed there.
4.1 APPEARANCE PARTS
These parts may not all be available for your vehicle, and they
don't affect performance, so you may want to leave these for
last.
4.1.1 Bug Shield
The Bug Shield is a small plastic deflector placed at the front
of the engine hood. It is an appearance only item. Performance
effect: vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.1.2 Bush Guard
A bush guard will protect your headlights from being knocked out
during a race. The bush guard also serves as a convenient
structure upon which to mount fog lights and a winch. Performance
effect: Aerodynamic drag slightly increased, vehicle weight
increased slightly.
CASEMAN: get this ASAP. While you can't really lose your lights,
having this gets you the winch and foglights, which helps a bit.
4.1.3 Fender Flares
Fender flares are small plastic trim pieces that make the fenders
look more aggressive. These are an appearance only item.
Performance effect: Aerodynamic drag slightly increased, vehicle
weight increased slightly.
4.1.4 Mud Flaps
Mud Flaps are for appearance only and do not really help reduce
rocks or mud from flying off of the vehicles tires. Performance
effect: vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.1.5 Race Skid Plates
Race skid plates are functionally similar to the normal skid
plates except they are fabricated out of lightweight aluminum.
Performance effect: Aerodynamic drag slightly reduced, vehicle
weight increased slightly.
4.1.6 Roll Cage/Bar
The roll cage/bar (roll cage in a SUV and roll bar on a truck)
provides a small amount of improved chassis rigidity as well as a
convenient spot for mounting driving lights (On an SUV a small
roof rack is mounted for driving lights). Performance effect:
vehicle weight slightly increased.
CASEMAN: this is really for looks, but it's cheap
4.1.7 Skid Plates
Skid plates help protect the transfer case as well as the front
and rear differentials. Performance effect: Aerodynamic drag
slightly reduced, vehicle weight slightly increased.

4.1.8 Sun Visor
The sun visor is a small plastic strip that is placed just above
the windshield to block the sun. This is an appearance only item.
Performance effect: vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.1.9 Truck Fairing
This truck fairing is an appearance item that is placed behind
the cab of the truck. Performance effect: vehicle weight
increased slightly.
4.1.10 Whip Antenna
The whip antenna is an appearance only part. Performance effect:
vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.1.11 Winch
A winch will help you recover from a roll over or stuck condition
quicker. You must have purchased a bush bar first so you will
have something to mount the winch to. Performance effect:
Aerodynamic drag slightly increased, vehicle weight increased
slightly.
CASEMAN: hopefully you never get into situation where you need
this, but you'll appreciate having it if you do.
4.2 BRAKES
Brakes are used more on the shorter tracks.
4.2.1 Brake Bias Controller
A brake bias controller allows the driver to adjust how braking
force is distributed between the front and rear of the vehicle.
Moving the braking force to the rear of the vehicle will cause it
spin or rotate more under braking. Moving the braking force to
the front wheels will cause the vehicle to push or understeer
more under braking.
CASEMAN: may help on shorter tracks where you need to tap brakes
more often.
4.2.2 Brake Cooling Ducts
Brake cooling ducts will keep brake temperatures within
specification even during repeated high-speed stops. The ducts
will allow the braking system to work at its effective maximum
capabilities. Your vehicle must have carbon metallic race brake
pads installed before installing brake-cooling ducts. Performance
effect: braking torque slightly increased, vehicle weight
increased slightly.
4.2.3 Carbon Metallic Race Brake Pads
Carbon Metallic brake pads are designed to withstand extremely
high temperatures from repeated high-speed stops. Carbon Metallic
pads also provide improved friction for very short stopping
distances. Performance effect: braking torque slightly increased.
4.2.4 Cross Drilled Brake Discs
Cross-drilled brake discs decrease the weight of the disc as well
as provide an area for brake dust and gases to escape.
Performance effect: braking torque increased slightly, vehicle
weight decreased slightly.

4.2.5 High Performance Brake Pads
High performance brake pads are made out of a metallic material,
which improves the stopping ability and fade resistance of the
vehicle. Performance effect: braking torque increased slightly.

4.2.6 Six Piston Brake Calipers
Six piston brake calipers give improved braking feel for better
control under braking. Your vehicle must already be equipped with
cross-drilled brake discs in order to be able to install six
piston brake calipers. Performance effect: braking torque
slightly increased, vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.3 CHASIS
Chasis mods are main weight reduction, though the various braces
would improve handling.
4.3.1 Carbon Fiber Body
The carbon fiber body is similar to the fiber glass body except
that it is slightly lighter. Due to carbon fibers strength the
body parts can be made out of less material which results in a
slight reduction of weight. In order to mount a carbon fiber body
the vehicle must be equipped with a tube frame chassis.
Performance effect: aerodynamic drag slightly decreased, vehicle
weight slightly decreased.
4.3.2 Carbon Fiber Hood and Fenders
The carbon fiber body parts are similar to the fiber glass body
parts but are stronger. Due to the higher strength of carbon
fiber the parts can be made a little lighter than the fiber glass
parts. Performance effect: aerodynamic drag slightly increased,
vehicle weight slightly decreased.
4.3.3 Chassis Stiffening
This process involves stripping the chassis down to a bare frame
and then adding braces to strategic parts of the frame to
reinforce and stiffen it. These braces will help the chassis
resist twisting during hard cornering. Performance effect: tire
grip slightly increased, vehicle weight slightly increased.
4.3.4 Fiber Glass Hood and Fenders
These fiber glass body parts replace the engine hood and both
left and right front fenders with light weight fiber glass parts.
Performance effect: aerodynamic drag slightly increased, vehicle
weight slightly decreased.
4.3.5 Fiberglass Body
The fiber glass body is a two piece complete body made out of
fiberglass. Because the entire body is made out of two pieces it
requires a tube frame chassis to mount it. Since the entire body
is composed of only two panels without the seams that normally
occur in a stock body there is also a slight reduction in the
coefficient of drag. In order to mount a fiber glass body the
vehicle must be equipped with a tube frame chassis. Performance
effect: aerodynamic drag slightly decreased, vehicle weight
slightly decreased.
4.3.6 Front Cross Brace
A front cross brace helps stiffen up the front of the chassis.
The bracing makes sure that the suspension location points do not
move and that the front frame twists less under cornering load.
Performance effect: tire grip slightly increased, vehicle weight
slightly increased.

4.3.7 Front Strut Tower Bars
A front strut tower bar connects the two upper strut towers with
metal bracing to prevent movement of the towers and frame under
cornering load. Performance effect: tire grip slightly increased,
vehicle weight slightly increased.

4.3.8 Rear Cross Brace
A rear cross brace helps stiffen up the rear of the chassis. The
bracing makes sure that the suspension location points do not
move and that the rear frame twists less under cornering load.
Performance effect: tire grip slightly increased, vehicle weight
slightly increased.

4.3.9 Tube Frame Chassis
A tube frame chassis gets rid of the stock frame and replaces it
with one that is welded out of high strength steel tubes.
Aluminum is used to form panels along the tubes, which adds to
the strength of the whole chassis. A tube frame chassis will be
much lighter than a stock chassis and also give better cornering
capability due to a reduced center of gravity and better
suspension location. Performance effect: tire grip slightly
increased, vehicle weight decreased.
4.3.10 Weight Removal Level 1
This initial weight removal process removes all of the
unnecessary interior parts such as back seats, carpet, interior
plastic lining, and sound deadening. Performance effect: vehicle
weight decreased. (by 3%)
CASEMAN: helps acceleration, almost like 3% torque gain
4.3.11 Weight Removal Level 2
This second level of the weight removal process removes all
unnecessary equipment, bolts, and replaces the window glass with
lexan panels. Weight Removal Level 1 must be performed before you
can purchase Weight Removal Level 2. Performance effect: vehicle
weight slightly decreased. (by 2%)
4.4 DRIVE TRAIN
These are for serious modders only, as they are expensive and
does not produce much gain in performance.
4.4.1 Aluminum Drive Shafts
An aluminum drive shaft decreases the overall weight of the
vehicle by replacing the stock driveshaft with a lightweight
aluminum one. Performance effect: vehicle weight decreased
slightly.
4.4.2 Carbon Fiber Drive Shafts
A carbon fiber drive shaft decreases the overall weight of the
vehicle by replacing the stock driveshaft with a lightweight
carbon fiber one. Performance effect: vehicle weight decreased
slightly.
4.4.3 Heavy Duty Clutch
A heavy-duty clutch has more clamping power and can handle
engines with increased power. A heavy-duty clutch is usually
required when using a modified engine.
4.4.4 Lightweight Axle Girdle
This axle girdle is constructed out of 356T Aluminum casting for
lighter weight and additional strength. The axle girdle covers
the rear differential. Performance effect: vehicle weight
decreased slightly.
4.4.5 Race Flywheel
A Race Flywheel is much more radical than a sport flywheel in
terms of its mass. A race flywheel is only for racing and is
unsuitable for street driving. The lightweight race flywheel
allows the engine to rev quickly due to its very small inertia. A
race flywheel will also reduce the overall weight of the vehicle
slightly. Performance effect: vehicle weight decreased slightly.
4.4.6 Race Gearbox
A race gearbox is built out of lightweight but strong alloy
metal. The efficient design of the gearbox creates less friction
in the driveline, which increases power to the wheels.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased slightly, vehicle
weight decreased slightly.
4.4.7 Race Transfer Case
A race transfer case is built out of a strong alloy metal and is
designed for all out race applications. A race transfer case will
enable a two-wheel drive vehicle to have four-wheel drive
capability.
CASEMAN: Useful if you want to turn 2WD vehicles into 4WD.
4.4.8 Racing Clutch
A race clutch is designed to hold extreme power levels. A race
clutch is required when using a highly modified engine.
4.4.9 Ring Gear and Pinion Set
This set includes a variety of different ratio ring gear and
pinion sets. These sets allow adjustment of a vehicle's
acceleration and top end speed. A low numerical ratio will give
the vehicle a higher top end speed on long a straight with slower
acceleration out of a tight corner. A high numerical ratio will
give the vehicle a lower top speed on a long straight but faster
acceleration out of a tight corner.
TRANSLATION: adjustable transmission let you choose between high
top speed vs. high acceleration.
4.4.10 Sport Flywheel
A Sport Flywheel is a replacement flywheel with slightly less
weight. The lighter flywheel allows the engine to rev quicker due
to its reduced inertia. A sport flywheel will also reduce the
overall weight of the vehicle slightly. Performance effect:
vehicle weight decreased slightly.
4.5 ELECTRONICS
Expensive, may want to leave these for later.
4.5.1 Performance Tuned ECU
The sport tuned ECU includes a reprogrammed computer chip for a
vehicle with mild modifications such as performance exhaust and
intake. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 3%.
4.5.2 Programmable EFI System
The EFI system is a stand-alone fully programmable Electronic
Fuel Injection system. An EFI system is required if you want to
have a highly modified engine. Performance effect: vehicle torque
increased by 7%.
4.5.3 Race Ignition System
The race ignition is designed to produce a hotter and more
efficient spark needed for high performance applications. The
unit provides optimum spark duration and voltage output. The race
ignition allows the engine to produce greater power at higher RPM
levels and increased throttle response at lower RPM levels.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 1.5%.
4.5.4 Race Tuned ECU
The race tuned ECU includes a reprogrammed computer chip for wild
modifications such as race cams and port and polished heads.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 5%.
4.5.5 Sport Ignition System
A sport ignition system is designed to produce a reliable spark.
A sport ignition system will ensure proper power levels are
achieved when using a slightly modified engine. Performance
effect: vehicle torque increased by 1%.
4.6 ENGINE
Lots of options here, but many have prerequisites (which have
their own prerequisites). Pick the cheap ones first.
4.6.1 Air to Air Intercooler
An air to air intercooler cools the compressed intake charge
before it enters the engine. A cooler air intake charge reduces
the change of detonation and increases the amount of power that
can be produced from a supercharger or turbo charger. The vehicle
must already be equipped with a supercharger or turbo charger
before you can install an air to water intercooler. Performance
effect: vehicle torque increased by 10%, vehicle weight slightly
increased.
4.6.2 Air to Water Intercooler
An air to water intercooler cools the compressed intake charge
before it enters the engine. The intercooler uses engine water to
cool the charge. A cooler air intake charge reduces the change of
detonation and increases the amount of power that can be produced
from a supercharger. The vehicle must already be equipped with a
supercharger before you can install an air to water intercooler.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 10%, vehicle
weight increased slightly.
4.6.3 Aluminum Race Radiator
An aluminum race radiator replaces the stock heavy radiator with
a lightweight aluminum one. Not only does this radiator help keep
a highly modified engine cool but it also saves weight.
Performance effect: vehicle weight increased slightly.
4.6.4 Cold Air Intake
The cold air intake replaces the stock intake plumbing with a
tube that picks up air from the front fender or bumper area. The
air picked up at one of these locations will be colder than the
air picked up in the engine bay. Colder air is denser and results
in more power. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by
2.5%, vehicle weight increased slightly.

4.6.5 Dyno Tune Level 1
The Dyno Tune Level 1 process involves putting the vehicle on a
chassis dynamometer and making minor adjusts to the engine in
order to increase power. A Dyno Tune Level 1 can be performed on
any vehicle. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 1%.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade
4.6.6 Dyno Tune Level 2
The Dyno Tune Level 2 process involves putting the vehicle on a
chassis dynamometer and making several adjustments to the engine
in order to increase power. A Dyno Tune Level 2 can only be
performed on a vehicle with a high capacity fuel system, an
upgraded exhaust system, and a modified ECU. The vehicle must
also have already had a Dyno Tune Level 1 performed. Performance
effect: vehicle torque increased by 2%.
4.6.7 Dyno Tune Level 3
The Dyno Tune Level 3 is performed by an experienced tuner. The
process involves putting the vehicle on a chassis dynamometer and
tuning the engine for a custom fuel injection system. A Dyno Tune
Level 3 can only be performed on a vehicle that has previously
had a Dyno Tune Level 2 and is equipped with a racing ECU or a
programmable EFI system. The vehicle must also have a sport
ignition system or a race ignition system. Performance effect:
vehicle torque increased by 4%.
4.6.8 Dyno Tune Level 4
The Dyno Tune Level 4 can only be performed by a shop with a
stand alone engine dynamometer. The process involves pulling the
motor from the vehicle and tuning the EFI system to optimize the
engine power. A Dyno Tune Level 4 can only be performed on a
vehicle with a highly modified engine and an EFI system. To
Perform a Dyno Tune Level 4 the vehicle must already have had a
Dyno Tune Level 3. The vehicle must also have a race ignition
system and an EFI system. Performance effect: vehicle torque
increased by 8%.
4.6.9 Forced Induction Exhaust
A forced induction exhaust is specially designed for a vehicle
that is running a supercharger or turbo charger. A forced
induction exhaust needs as little backpressure as possible in the
exhaust system. The vehicle must be equipped with a supercharger
or turbo charger before you can install a forced induction
exhaust. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 5%.
4.6.10 High Capacity Fuel Pump
A high capacity fuel pump is required when making excessive
performance modifications to an engine. As the engine flows more
air it will require more fuel. After awhile the stock fuel pump
will not be able to keep up and must be replaced with a high
capacity fuel pump.
4.6.11 Hood Scoop
A hood scoop allows air to be forced into the intake when the
vehicle is at speed. The faster the speed of the vehicle the more
effective the hood scoop becomes. The hood scoop also receives
cold air from the outside as opposed to hot air from the engine
bay. The drawback to a hood scoop is that it slightly increases
the aerodynamic coefficient of drag of the vehicle. Performance
effect: vehicle torque increased by 2%, aerodynamic drag slightly
increased.
4.6.12 Port & Polished Head
This process involves modifying the combustion chamber of the
cylinder head to promote more efficient combustion. The surface
of the head is milled away to increase compression. Next, the
shape of the combustion chamber is modified for more efficient
combustion. Lastly, the intake and exhaust ports are modified for
smooth airflow into and out of the combustion chamber.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 8%.
4.6.13 Race Exhaust
A race exhaust system is specially designed for high performance
engines. The exhaust is very short and usually exits near the
middle of the vehicle. Performance effect: vehicle torque
increased by 4%, vehicle weight decreased slightly.
4.6.14 Race Exhaust Headers
Race Exhaust headers are custom titanium pipes that are tuned to
produce power at high RPM and flow rates. The titanium metal
helps the pipes retain heat, which increases exhaust velocity.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 4%.
4.6.15 Race Intake Manifold
A race intake manifold is a custom manifold designed for highly
modified engines. The manifold has short intake runners, which
are efficient for high power, high RPM engines. In order to
install a race intake manifold you must already have installed a
Race ECU or a Programmable EFI System. Performance effect:
vehicle torque increased by 4%.
4.6.16 Racing Throttle Body
A race throttle body is designed for highly modified engines. A
race throttle body is designed for high RPM engines and will not
be drivable in a stock engine. The vehicle must already have a
race intake manifold installed before installing a racing
throttle body. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by
5%.
4.6.17 Sport Air Filter
A Sport Air Filter replaces the stock air element with a higher
flowing one. By freeing up the restriction in the intake the
engine can breathe better and make more power. Performance
effect: vehicle torque increased by 2.5%.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade
4.6.18 Sport Exhaust
A sport exhaust system replaces the stock exhaust with larger
mandrel bent tubes. The mandrel bent tubes have a constant
radius, which promotes smoother airflow versus stock crush bent
tubes which get narrow when it bends. The sport exhaust system
also replaces the stock muffler with a performance muffler that
has less restriction. A sport exhaust system will increase a
vehicles power slightly and will also reduce the overall weight
of the vehicle. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by
2%, vehicle weight decreased slightly.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade
4.6.19 Sport Exhaust Headers
Sport Exhaust headers are lightweight steel tubes bent to the
optimum shape for power on slightly modified motors. The pipes
are usually coated with a ceramic paint to retain heat and
prevent corrosion of the pipes. Performance effect: vehicle
torque increased by 2%.
4.6.20 Sport Intake Manifold
A sport intake manifold has been ported so that the entire
throttle body opening perfectly matches the manifold opening and
so that all of the intake ports match up perfectly to the
cylinder head intake ports. Lastly, all of the surfaces inside
the manifold are cleaned up and shaped to promote quick airflow.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 2%.
4.6.21 Sport Throttle Body
A sport throttle body is slightly larger than a stock throttle
body in order to increase the airflow into the engine. If the
engine can flow more air it will be able to produce greater
power. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 3%.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade
4.6.22 Supercharger System
A supercharger system uses a pulley on the engine to drive a
turbine, which compresses air into the engine. By compressing in
more air the engine can use more fuel and thus produce more
power. In order to handle the increased power the vehicle must be
equipped with a heavy duty or race clutch before installing a
supercharger. Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by
30%, vehicle weight slightly increased.
4.6.23 Turbo Charger System
A turbo charger system uses exhaust gas to power a turbine that
compresses air into an engine. By compressing in more air the
engine can use more fuel and thus produce more power. In order to
handle the increased power the vehicle must be equipped with a
heavy duty or race clutch before installing a turbo charger.
Performance effect: vehicle torque increased by 40%, vehicle
weight slightly increased.
4.6.24 Underdrive Pulley Kit
An under-drive pulley kit replaces the stock AC, alternator, and
power steering pulley with one that is slightly larger. The
larger pulley does not require as much engine power to turn but
also does not turn as fast as the old pulley. The under-drive
pulley is designed to not reduce engine power as much as the
stock pulley set while at the same time being able to power the
AC, alternator, and power steering. Performance effect: vehicle
torque increased by 1%.
4.7 LIGHTS
Every bit helps in low-visibility and night driving.
4.7.1 Driving Lights
These driving lights are equipped with higher power bulbs that
illuminate a greater area than stock driving lights.
NOTE: Think of them as Xenon bulb upgrades.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade
4.7.2 Fog Lights
Fog lights are aimed differently than driving lights to increase
visibility in low visibility conditions. These lights will help
increase the distance that you can see when the track is covered
with fog. To mount fog lights the vehicle must already be
equipped with a bush guard. Performance effect: vehicle weight
increased slightly.
CASEMAN: cheap but effective upgrade, you need them in the foggy
weather races.
4.7.3 High Power Driving Lights
Racing lights have the highest power bulbs possible for
illuminating the track. These race lights will give you increased
visibility even during the darkest of nights. In order to mount
race lights a truck must already be equipped with a roll bar or a
SUV must already be equipped with a roll cage. Performance
effect: vehicle weight increased slightly, aerodynamic drag
slightly increased.
NOTE: Think of them as HID light upgrades.
4.8 SUSPENSION
The costs here can be significant. I'd stop at about 8-14 inch
kits. Don't buy more than two sets as you can't sell parts in 4E.

4.8.8 Race Springs/Damper (18 Inch)
The 18-inch spring/damper kit increases suspension travel to 18
inches by replacing the suspension arms with longer units. The
vehicle must have the four-inch lift kit or greater installed
before installing the 18-inch spring/damper kit.
4.8.9 Race Springs/Damper (24 Inch)
The 24-inch spring/damper kit increases suspension travel to 24
inches. The 24-inch dampers have external reservoirs for improved
unsprung suspension weight. The vehicle must have the 10-inch
lift kit or greater installed before installing the 24-inch
spring/damper kit.
4.8.10 Sport Springs/Damper
The sport spring/damper kit replaces the stock springs and damper
with ones that are slightly firmer. This kit will allow the
vehicle to be a little more aggressive in cornering maneuvers.
4.9 TIRES
Tires give you traction, so having the good tires is important.
It's how you balance cost vs. traction that is the main decision.
4.9.1 31 x10.50R15 Baja T/Ar Tires
A 31 tire gives your vehicle greater ground clearance and a
larger radius, which makes it easier to drive over large rocks
and other obstacles. 31 tires can be placed on most vehicles
without clearance problems. 31 tires do come with drawbacks

4.9.10 Race Wheels
These race wheels are much lighter than stock ones and are built
stronger to endure the rigors of racing off-road. Performance
effect: braking power increased slightly, vehicle weight slightly
decreased.

5.1 ARCTIC WASTELAND
Snowy level, bring studded tires. Lots of wheelspin, very
difficult, no significant shortcuts. Definitely use 4WL here, and
try not to spin the wheels too hard or you won't get
acceleration. Very technical course, make lots of small
adjustments and keep speed relatively low.
5.2 ARIZONA
Fast course with lots of cactus and such. One MAJOR shortcut...
Once you make it past checkpoint 4, instead of completing the
left turn into the valley, go straight past the ranch, and you'll
drop into a valley with railroad track. Follow the track through
the tunnel, and you're at checkpoint five by making a right.
5.3 BAYOU FLATS
Very short course that has an interesting flying shortcut.
However, if you miss slightly, you either end up in the water, or
you get hung up by a tree. Still, it's the only way you'll get
ahead, as all the AI use that shortcut (with varying degree of
success!)
5.4 BLACK GOLD
Short but fast course with a couple narrow bridges and a few
jumps. The train can be a great equalizer, or it'll hold you
back. No significant shortcuts.
5.5 CONSTRUCTION JUNCTION
Twists and turns with one super-straight. Definitely turn up the
top-speed if you can. Watch for the construction equipment, as
some may be moving. Crash through the police barrier. Everybody
does. After the second set of police cars, make a sharp left and
cut through the grass until you get to the "lane closed" sign.
Stay in right lane.
5.6 CRAZY2000
Figure 8 course with one jump that can cause problems if you
don't have enough speed. If you can hit 60 as you crest the hill
you should make it. If not, climb the LEFT side of the embankment
and you should be able to get back onto the road and keep going.
Cutting across the grass behind the machinery may or may not help
you maintain speed.
5.7 FARM ROAD 109
Another track with train, this one has a shortcut that let you to
bypass the train if you wish... but it involves a bit of hill
climb and water wading. Still, not being dependent on the train
make it worthwhile. Definitely take the shortcut. Basically, the
track is E shaped. When you come rounded the bottom 180 turn, go
through the checkpoint and cut right just before the railroad
crossing, and go straight toward the next checkpoint, try to stay
on land (you may land in and drive in water!). When there, climb
the hill and turn right into checkpoint.
5.8 FINAL DESTINATION
The hilly terrain littered with old airplanes and wreckages...
Very interesting visually. Right after checkpoint 5 (6?) the road
forks right vs. straight. Split the difference and aim straight
up the hill just right of that fuselage at the corner. You should
get some air and land near the road for straight line into next
checkpoint. AI may go either left or right of the fuselage.
5.9 LAGUNA DEL SOL
Very short and very twisty track, no significant shortcuts, just
cut around the corner and through some trees so you can line up
better at the next checkpoint. Setup and maintaining speed
through the turns is critical. Rocks line the path edges so if
you got bit suspension kits you may not get hung up on the rocks.
As you make the turn into checkpoint 1, look for the line that
will take you straight into checkpoint 2 by cutting through the
trees and almost touching that shed. You can do almost the same
thing between cp 2 and cp 3. After cp 4 make a sharp left and
climb the hill around the rocks to cp 5.
5.10 MOTOCROSS
High speed sliding course, with nice and wide tracks and plenty
of room to turn. You should have no problem outrunning the AI
here if you got the setup right. Use medium or deep cut tires and
setup for just a little oversteer.
5.11 RESTRICTED AREA
Think Area 51 and you'd not be too far off. The fuel truck
doesn't really get in the way, though there may be another truck
on the other side of hangar. No shortcuts to speak of, except
maybe a bit of hill run between checkpoint 2 and 3, with that big
hangar in between. Just go around the hangar, as tight as you
can, and set yourself up for the next checkpoint.
5.12 SALVAGE WASTELAND
This one has a bunch of small shortcuts and some long high-speed
runs. Taking the shortcut is the best way to get ahead. Watch for
the bulldozers blocking your way.
The most often taken shortcut is narrow enough that AI often get
hung up there. It's near the top part of the course. You can cut
across the loop there by going between two junkers, or just
bypass the junkers by climbing the hill just to the right of
them. Then turn left into the next checkpoint.
5.13 SILVERSTON PASS
Forests with a couple loopbacks, no shortcuts, and lots of trees
in your way. If you can thread through the trees and cut across
the corner you may save a little bit of time, but if you get hung
up on a tree you'll lose.
5.14 TREASURE BAY
Very long course with lots of twists and turns. No significant
shortcut, this one is turning all the way, with one long high
speed section. Slow down at the end of that section to make the
turn.
5.15 TRUCK STOP 101
One section of highway, with traffic, followed by mountain roads,
then one long offroad section leading back to highway. Medium cut
tires is probably best. There are at least three routes with a
possible 4th by you. Watch for incoming traffic on the main
freeway.
The "main" route is by taking a LEFT right after checkpoint 6,
and follow the valley (going under one highway), then another
valley, cross under another highway, and left turn onto the road
into checkpoint 7.
The alternate route is on highway all the way, but this one has
multiple switchbacks, so it actually takes MORE time.
The AI tend to use a shortcut by climbing a small "pass" as you
go straight not long after checkpoint 6. This drops them into the
first valley without doing the "switchback" (by turning left
after checkpoint 6) Then you can go through the second valley
normally and cut left back onto the mountain road.
Another run, which the AI doesn't use, drop into the 2nd valley.
This one doesn't save as much time as the first, since you have
to go straight at checkpoint 6, then navigate the first
switchback. At the second bridge, (right after 2 trees on the
left), you go off the road on the left side, and turn left as you
drop into the valley. You should be able to turn straight into
checkpoint 7. This one keeps the speed up a bit but due to its
use of the road it may not allow you to catch the AI cars.
6 Miscellaneous
6.1 HOW TO ADD CUSTOM TRACKS
With the patched versions of 4E, there should be a menu just
before you start that has a menu option that loads custom tracks.
Those tracks need to go into the CustomTracks subdirectory.
Or you can add the entire POD file by dropping it into the 4E
directory, and edit the POD.INI to include that POD file (or
download a utility called PODINI.EXE to help you with it).
6.2 HOW TO ADD CUSTOM VEHICLES
This depends on how the vehicle was distributes.
If it comes in a POD file, then drop it into the 4E directory,
and edit the POD.INI to include that POD file (or download a
utility called PODINI.EXE to help you with it).
If it comes in separate files (.SMF, . BIN, .RAW, .ACT, .OPA,
TRK), then you'll need to copy them into respective directories.
SMF and BIN go into MODELS subdir. TRK goes into TRUCK subdir.
The rest go into ART subdir.
6.3 CHEAT CODES
6.3.1 Get 1 million
Type
goldfinger
during game play. A sound will confirm this portion of the code.
Then, type

A sound will confirm correct code entry. Exit the race and you
will have $1 million.
NOTE: Repeating the code will set your current amount to $1
million -- you cannot get more than that amount.
6.3.2 Money hack
Note: This procedure involves editing a game file; create a
backup copy of the file before proceeding. It is quite possible
to lose your entire career, so don't do this to your main
profile!
Use a text editor to edit the "metal.ini" file in the "system"
folder that is inside the game folder. Scroll down to the
profiles and look for the "Cash=" line that is followed by 27
characters. Change those 27 characters to the following to get $1

6.4 TREASURE HUNT
On each of the 15 maps, there are at least one treasure chest.
Some are just off the road, while others are hidden pretty far
from the course. As spoilers, here are directions to all of them.
All hidden money amounts vary depending on how much the race is
worth.
6.4.1 Arctic Wasteland
Go through checkpoint 2, but continue straight instead of
following the track. Pass between two hangars and continue
straight across a small lake. Ahead of you will be an American
flag. At the base of this is another hangar. Treasure chest is
next to the hangar.
6.4.2 Arizona
Go to checkpoint 6 (may want to turn around from the starting
line) Go straight out over the tracks over the mountains and find
the little town that is out a bit. The chest is inside the town.
6.4.3 Bayou Flats
Go through the checkpoint 2. Just before the checkpoint 3 is a
canoe. Go in the water by the canoe to find a chest in the water.
6.4.4 Black Gold
Immediately after you go through checkpoint 6, keep following the
trail. You will see a bridge once you go down the hill. Go over
the bridge. To the right is a fenced in area with a oil tanker
truck in front of the entrance. This is immediately before you go
through checkpoint 7. The treasure chest is over to the right
side of the fenced in area.
6.4.5 Crazy 2000
In the last turn before finish line run, go straight into water.
A treasure chest is under water by the back edge of the pond.
6.4.6 Farm Road
Go under the train trestle in the middle of the pond to locate
the treasure chest.
6.4.7 Final Destination
Go through checkpoint 1 and go left around the airplane. Drive
straight until you see a pack of airplanes. The treasure is next
to the far-left plane.
6.4.8 Laguna Del Ray
Off on the right of starting point is a small island just
offshore. On top the island is a chest.
6.4.9 MotorCross
Look for a Porta-Pot up on a hill on left between gates 5 and 6,
next to the tents. Treasure chest is at/near there.
6.4.10 Restricted Area
Go straight when you pass through checkpoint 5. After a little
driving you will reach an aircraft hanger with a jet inside. In
the corner of the hanger is the treasure chest.
6.4.11 Salvage Wasteland
After checkpoint 2, make the jump. Instead of making the right
turn to checkpoint 3, turn left. You will enter another fenced in
area with dirt mounds. A box containing $2242 is in this area
besides a mound of dirt.
6.4.12 Silverton Pass
Just before you reach checkpoint 7, stop in the water. Turn left
and stay in water. Keep to the left at the fork. After this,
there is a small rock jetty to your left. In the small pool
beside it is the treasure chest.
6.4.13 Treasure Bay
When starting, go over to the beached tanker to the right, and
drive around on the water side. You can find a chest in the side
hull.
There may be others. Look for treasure chests on the beaches.
6.4.14 Truck Stop 101
From the starting line, turn left off the track and drive
straight until you reach a highway. Turn right, stay off the road
about 40 yards, but just below the hill that runs along the
highway. There should be a big dip next to the road within a few
hundred yards. Down in the lowest part of the dip is the treasure
chest.
6.5 EASTER EGGS
6.5.1 Voices?
If you drive long enough, you will start hearing voices saying
phrases such as "I have a dream" or "You go faster in reverse".
6.5.2 Hidden track on the Motorcross map.
When you get to checkpoint 11, drive straight over the hill in
front of it. Once over it, you will find a small circle track.
6.5.3 Hidden Track on Salvage Wasteland
Once the race starts, go through the starting line, but stop
immediately after it. Turn around and face the part of the wall
that looks different than the sheet metal. Drive through this
section of wall, and follow the power line poles until you reach
a hidden track loop.
6.6 HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN TRUCKS OR TRACKS
The file format used in 4E is compatible with those in Monster
Truck Madness 2. The older tracks need a bit of updating to work.
Some vehicles can be converted from Midtown Madness, Need for
Speed, or Monster Truck Madness.
