INTRODUCTION:

Hello all.  This FAQ covers the game X: Unmei no Tatakai for the Sony
Playstation.  It is a one-on-one fighting game.

Unfortunately, I don't have the manual for this game, so all information is
gleaned from the game itself and the multitude of websites which have
information on the series.

I am not going to bother with the copyright stuff.  If you are low enough
to try to bank a profit off of this, or you decide to plagiarize it, that's
your wretched morality.

The newest version of this FAQ can be found at the following sites:

STORY

Again, I don't the manual, plus can't read Japanese, so as far as the game
is concerned, I have no idea.

However, since the game is based on the X manga, which I do know a little
about, I can present some info for newcomers.

X concerns two groups of people concerned with the fate of Earth.  These
two groups are the Ten no Ryu (Dragons of Heaven a.k.a The Seven Seals) and
the Chi no Ryu (Dragons of Earth a.k.a The Seven Angels).  The Dragons of
Earth want to destroy the present world and create a new one.  The Dragons
of Heaven oppose them and wish to preserve the present world.

The focus of this conflict is a 16-year old boy named Kamui Shirou.  Both
sides want Kamui to join them, as his powers will turn the tide of the
battle between the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth.  The name
"Kamui"  can have two meanings, one which basically means "He that
represents the majesty of God," and the other which means "He that hunts the
majesty of God."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONTROLS

Legend:
T--triangle
S--square
O--circle
X--the X button

T--weak attack
S--guard
O--strong attack
X--psychic barrier

T + O--throw

The psychic barrier is used to block strong projectiles.  Use it if someone
uses a O button projectile on you.

Note:  X has an excellent in-game tutorial describing basic moves, so I will
not put that information here, unless it is requested or needed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIFE AND PSYCHIC METERS

On the left and right sides of the screen are the Life and Psychic meters
for both players (player 1's data is on the left, player 2 is on the right).

The Life and Psychic meters share the same bar.  Life is represented by
yellow, and Psychic energy is purple.  Special moves require Psychic energy.
This energy recharges if you remain still and don't move.

If you lose any life, the Psychic meter increases, thus you have more
Psychic energy to work with.  Life does not regenerate however.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOVELIST

Well, the moves for the characters are pretty simple, as everyone basically
uses the same motions.

I am listing the first motion that I did that made the move work.  All moves
can be done by taking the motions listed and doing them in another
direction.

Example.  If I have F,F + O  (forward, forward, circle), you can also do
B,B (back, back), U,U, (up, up), or D,D (down, down) + circle and the move
will also work.

I am putting the Psychic Energy cost next to the controller motion.

Move names are my own, although I have attempted to put the Japanese
pronunication for some of them (at least those not involving Kanji, as I
REALLY don't know that one), so bear with the horrible names and such.
Corrections and translations are fully welcome and encouraged.

I intend to expand this section with actual moves descriptions and such.

Michael Lo has indicated that the complete movelist for each character is
located in the "Gallery"  option.  Choose the "Command" item when you choose
a character in the gallery pic selections.

For Combos, beside each combo is a number indicating the percentage of
damage the combo will do.

Legend:
------
F--forward
B--back
U--up
D--down
HCB--half-circle back
360--a full 360 circle motion on the controller

T--triangle
O--circle

*    *    *    *    * TEN NO RYU (DRAGONS OF HEAVEN) *    *    *    *    *
===========================================================================

Kamui Shirou
------------
Kamui is the focus of X and thus the main character.  He is a loner type
character, and has no interest in the battle for the Earth that concerns the
Dragons of Heaven and Earth.  At the moment, he is on the side of the
Dragons of Heaven.

O (30)-- strong energy blast
B,F + O (45)-- Enaji Hito (Energy Hit?--releases multiple energy blasts;
              decent range and nice spread)
F,F + T (1 per second)--Enaji Furea (Energy Fire--Kamui's hands glow. I
believe this increases the damage he can do)
HCB + T (40)--Subauto Etsuji (energy arc)
B,F,F + O (100)-- Enaji Emitsushiyon (Energy Emission--releases multiple
                 energy balls toward foe)
360 + O (160)--Angel Throw.  Kamui grabs the foe, throws them onto a white
cross, grows angel wings, forms the shin-ken (god sword), and
              impales the foe.

COMBOS:
------
T,T     (8)
T,T,T   (11)
T,T,T,T (15)
T,O     (11)
T,T,O   (16)

Sorata Arisugawa
----------------
A happy-go-lucky fellow whose destiny is to die for the woman he loves
(which appears to be Arashi Kishu).  His power is lightning.

O (35)--strong lightning blast (there is some way to make this change
       direction)
B,F + O (65)--growing electric ball (hold the button to increase the size)
F,F + T (40)--body charge (do the double-direction motion in another
direction immediately after doing the first one to go in
             another direction with the charge)
B,F,F + T (40)--lightning charge (charges Sorata's body with electricity--I
believe this increases the damage he can do)
HCB + T (50)--multi-ball blaster
360 + O (60)--lightning pyramid capture

COMBOS:
-------
T,T   (16)
T,O   (16)
T,O,O (19)

Arashi Kishu
------------
Argh!  Can't remember much for her.  I believe she is a sword spirit.  She
carries a sword in her arm (which thrusts out of her hand when she wants
it).  She is a serious character and a pretty good fighter.

F + O (40)--hilt charge (knocks foe back a good distance)
F,F + T (20)--teleport dash
HCB + O (30)--Half-circle sword energy arc
F,F + O (45)--Wave projectile (hold direction to make it travel the full
             distance to the enemy)
B,F,F + T (25)--Multi-slash throw (get close to do this)
360 + T (0)--removes 20% of Arashi's life meter.  Michael Lo believes this
increases the damage Arashi can do for a time.

COMBOS:
------
T,T   (9)
T,T,T (18)
T,O   (13)
T,T,O (17)

Note:  You can tack Arashi's F,F + O move at the end of the first two combos

Subaru Sumeragi
---------------
He is the head of a spiritual clan and possesses tremendous power.  He is
arguably the strongest member of the Dragons of Heaven next to Kamui.  He
suffered a tragic past when his at-one-time friend killed Subaru's sister
(whose name is Hokuto).  As a result, Subaru became highly introverted.  He,
like Kamui, is also not concerned about the Dragons' battles.  His sole
concern is getting revenge against his sister's killer--Seishirou
Sakurazuka.

Note:  The whole incident concerning Subaru, Hokuto, and Seishirou is
revealed in the anime called Tokyo Babylon.  See the Tips, Tricks,
and Secrets section to learn more about them.

O (25)--bird card shot
B,F,F + T (50)--laser card (use with the following two moves for more stuff)
B,F + O (30)--red card  (do this, then the laser card to get an 8-way
                       laser)
B,F + T (10)--blue card (do this, then the laser card to get a reflective
                       laser)
HCB + O (100)--HUGE beam (no joke, this thing is big)
HCB + T (50)--card circle (must be close to actually hit)
B,F,F + O (80)--triple-laser cards

COMBOS:
------
T,T     (8)
T,T,T   (13)
T,O     (11)
T,T,T,O (15)

Note:  The last combo sometimes seems to work with just two presses of the
Triangle button (i.e. T,T,O), but hit it three times just be safe.

Yuzuriha Nekoi
--------------
Hmm, let's see how to put this.  She is a young spiritualist that is part of
a clan that uses dog spirits to fight.  Yuzuriha's dog spirit is named
Inuki.  In her case, the dog becomes a sword.  The spirits are invisible to
normal people.  Yuzuriha said that she might fall in love with anyone that
could see Inuki.  Somehow I don't think she wants to take herself up on that
statement, as one person who managed to see Inuki was Kusanagi Shiyu--a
Dragon of Earth!

O (35)--dog shot (the spirit charges at the foe)
B,F + O (35)--teleporting dog shot (can hit the foe from different angles)
B,F,F + O (1 per second)--dog sword (the spirit becomes a sword she can use;
do the motion again to undo the sword)
--(moves available once you have the sword)
                       F,F + T (45)--dog throw (Yuzuriha gets on Inis,
proceeds to grab the foe and careen
them around the screen before slamming
                                     them into the floor)
                       B,F + T (10)--energy projectile
                       B,F + O (20)--hilt charge (like Arashi Kishu)
B,F,F + T (0)--makes the spirit stay where it is instead of following
Yuzuriha like it normally does.  Press O to launch the spirit
              at the foe.

COMBOS:
------
Note:  The first number you see is the damage without the sword; the second
number is if you have the sword.  I have no idea why she does less
      damage with the sword.

T,T (6/6)
T,T,T (9/7)
T,T,T,T (15/11)
T,O (11/7)
T,T,O (14/13)

Karen
-----
Karen works at a massage place where women dress in either lingerie or
nothing at all and give men massages.  Although she gives off a classy
demeanor and a cool personality, she fights to protect her family in Tokyo.
Her power is fire.

(unknown--haven't unlocked her yet)

*    *    *    *    * CHI NO RYU (DRAGONS OF EARTH) *    *    *    *    *
===========================================================================

Fuma Monou
----------
Fuma was a close friend of Kamui.  Kamui likes Fuma's younger sister, whose
name is Kotori.  Fuma was a pretty quiet fellow.  He got captured by the Chi
no Ryu and basically went crazy.  He now thinks that he is Kamui and thus has
the power to decide the fate of the Earth.

It seems his getting involved with the Dragons of Earth was destiny.  The
destiny was that Fuma and Kamui would be on opposite sides.

O (30)--energy blast
Hold O (40)--multi-knife shot (starts with 3 and will increase to a max of
11 the longer you hold the button.  When you release the
            button, the knives fly out)
B,F + O (40)--Furea Etsuji (use when close.  Guaranteed six hits)
F,F + T (70)--Burouidensu Sodo (sword throw that pulls enemy to you)
HCB + T (25)--Fuo Subarasuto (another throw for Fuma, get close to make
             contact)
B,F,F + T (80)--Fuosushieru (a psychic barrier that negates projectiles
without using any more of your psychic energy.
360 + O (115)--Angel Throw.  Fuma grabs the foe, throws them onto a white
cross, grows angel wings, forms the shin-ken (god sword) and
              impales the foe.

COMBOS:
------
T,T     (9)
T,T,T   (15)
T,T,T,T (10,17)*
T,O     (13)
T,T,O,O (17)

*The fourth hit of this combo is delayed, therefore you will see the first
three hits register, then the fourth hit will come out if you hit the button
enough times. The 10 is for the first three hits, with the damage adding up
to 17 if the fourth hit connects.  This combo seems to only connect fully if
you have the opponent against a wall.

Yuto Kigai
----------
Don't really know anything about him, other than beneath the smile and
classy clothes is a pretty sadistic killer.  His power is water.

O (30)--water blast
B,F + O (40)--Supairaru Pared (water blast around body--large range)
B,F + T (23)--Furo Dosuterusu (frontal water shield)
HCB + T (35)--Akua Binisushiya (water shot--after releasing this, press a
direction and either T or O to make the shot expand into a
             column)
HCB + O (40)--Akua Subia (extending water drill)
B,F,F + O (80)--Haidoro Bureshiya (get close to make contact.  If the mist
hits the enemy, they are then pelted with multiple water
               blasts
B,F,F + T (50)--Baburuikusubaro (trap bubble.  Very slow.  If an enemy is
caught in it, they are immobile for a while, plus lose life
               slowly.

COMBOS:
------
T,T   (8)
T,T,T (14)
T,O   (12)
T,T,O (15)    --this combo hits for four hits

Nataku
------
A synthetic being, made by humans.  It does not have a gender, and so is
referred to as "it."  Although it looks male, it was designed based on a
girl.  It does not have emotions.

O (15)--strap hit
B,F + O (55)--strap trap (immobilizes enemy)
F,F + T (50)-- strap pull (pulls enemy close to you)
HCB + O (50)--strap surround (encircles your body; good range)
B,F + T (40)--strap energy pull (can grab your opponent; pelts enemy with
multiple energy waves after retraction; you can make it move
in different directions by pushing a direction after doing the
             motion.
F,B,B + O (40)--strap slam (Nataku travels to the foe;  if it grabs them,
Nataku slams them in the air a few times before slamming them
             into the floor.

COMBOS:
------
T,T     (6)
T,T,T   (9)
T,T,T,T (15)
T,O     (10)
T,T,O,O (12)

Seishirou Sakurazuka
--------------------
Ow!  How to describe this guy.  Ok, he is referred to as a group, although
he is the only person of the group.  He is extremely powerful as he
destroyed a kekai all by himself and may be the only match for Subaru
Sumeragi.  See the Tips, Tricks, and Secrets section for information about a
kekai. Seishirou was once a close friend of Subaru and Subaru's sister
Hokuto, but one day killed the girl because Subaru lost a bet Seishirou and
Subaru had made--the result of losing was death. Hokuto took Subaru's place.
It seems Seishirou's purpose is just to destroy everything.  He suffered an
accident which damaged his right eye (which you will notice is a different
color than his left eye).

Note:  The whole incident concerning Subaru, Hokuto, and Seishirou is
revealed in the anime called Tokyo Babylon.  See the Tips, Tricks,
and Secrets section to learn more about them.

O (35)--bird shot
B,F + T/O (15)--teleport (see Note)
HCB + O (90)--dark field (screen grows dark.  If Seishirou does a normal or
side dash, he becomes invisible, although if he does a normal
dash, you can see the sakura pettles he leaves behind)
HCB + T (35)--double card beam
F,F + T (20)--sakura pettle circle (this captures the enemy's psychic energy
and thrust it back at them--use this against projectiles and
             "psychic counters")
B,F,F + T (40)--card capture (this can be blocked by the psychic barrier)
B,F,F + O (80)--fast card shot (yeah, it's REALLY fast)
360 + O/T (40)--split teleport (splits into two, then one of the two
images disappears, leaving the real Seishiro a small
distance away from the central splitting point.  The
triangle/circle button determines which image becomes the
                  real Seihshiro)

Note:  Seishiro's B,F teleport is a bit complex as it has a follow-up.  An
      explanation follows:

B,F + T -- teleports in place
B,F + T,T -- clockwise teleport
B,F + T,O -- counter-clockwise teleport

B,F + O -- teleports near foe
B,F + O,T -- teleports behind foe
B,F + O,O -- teleports near foe then away from foe (basically teleport in
            place)

"Clockwise" and "counter-clockwise teleport"  describe what happens if you
continue to do the motion.  View the following diagrams:

Legend:
S--Seishiro
E--enemy
X--new position

S    E           --say that this is your initial setup with the enemy

Now you do B,F + T,T.  The results are:

Diagram 1

    X

S    E           --you are now at X

Do the motion again.  the results are

Diagram 2

S    E    X      --(ok, ok, I see what it spells ^_^)

And again:

Diagram 3

S    E

    X

Now, if you did B,F + T,O continously, the diagrams would go in reverse
(diagram 3,2,1).

COMBOS:
------
T,T   (15)
T,O   (16)
T,O,O (18-20)

Note:  I'm not sure what makes the last combo register for various damage.
It may have to do if you are near a wall or not.

Kusanagi Shiyu
--------------
A hulk of a man, possessing great brute strength.  He has a past with
Yuzuriha Nekoi, as he saved her in an accident.

O (30)--ball shot (hold the button to make the ball stop and stay in place;
you can do this multiple times--toss a ball, keep it in
place, toss another and keep it in place)
B + O (40)--energy ball kick (must be close)
B,F + T (30)--rock crush (can be blocked by psychic barrier)
B,F,F + O (90)--gravity hole rock hit (draws foe to you; the moment they hit
the hole, rocks start hitting them for about five to six
hits; the hole will keep drawing them to it as long as it
               remains)
HCB + O (70)--junk gather (gathers a bunch of junk and rocks around him; do
the motion again to throw the junk at your foe
B,F,B,F + T (60)--kekai scrape (a painful-looking throw--can be done from a
                 distance)
360 + T (70)--rock throw (grabs foe, throws them to ground, then pounds them
with many rocks; this costs 35 psychic points if you miss)

Aside:  No, he is NOT related to the Kusanagi clan of King of Fighters fame.

COMBOS:
------
T,T   (14)  --this combo hits for three hits
O,O   (18)
T,O   (18)
T,O,O (23)

That's it for now, more in the next update!

TIPS, TRICKS, AND SECRETS

Visit Gamefaqs to find some tricks for this game, including:

Getting the bad ending
Unlocking Karen

Some other info:

You will notice that two people can give the in-game tutorial, a young lady
and a man.  The young lady is Satsuki Yatouji, a Dragon of Earth.  She deals
with machines and is the person you see in the introduction that is in the
big machine.  You also see her in the options screen.  The man is Aoki
Seiichirou, a Dragon of Heaven.  He is a calm, collected fellow that works
in some company in Tokyo.  He fights to protect his wife and child.  His
power is wind.  Yep, that's him that is shown in the intro with the glasses
and blasting all that wind out before you see the woman releasing all the
fire (who is Karen).

Tokyo is stabilized by seven kekai (kek-eye), which are special energy
barriers.  If these barriers are destroyed, the world will be destroyed too.
Seishirou managed to destroy one of them, which gives a look at his great
power, as destroying a kekai is not an easy task.

The anime for X also mentions kekai, but there it refers to the barriers
that the Dragons of Heaven use to shield the populace from the destruction
that results when a Dragon of Heaven and a Dragon of Earth fight.  If the
producer of the kekai dies, the kekai dissolves and the destruction that was
kept away occurs in real-space.

The following information concerning The Subaru/Seishirou/Hokuto incident is
from Nicole Napolitan (quoted verbatim):

"Seishirou took Hokuto's life in place of Subaru's. When they first met
around ten years prior, Seishirou made a bet with Subaru and if Subaru won,
Seishirou wouldn't kill him. Subaru lost (to the dismay of many a yaoi fan
girl), but for some reason, Seishirou decided not to kill him right away.
While Subaru went Within/was in a coma from the shock of finding out his
vet friend was the Sakurazukamori and had marked him as his 'prey,' Hokuto
demanded that Seishirou take her in place of her younger brother. So
Seishirou did. Hokuto also cast a spell to protect Subaru from Sei-chan, and
that was why she sacrificed herself."
