To put it simply, Tall Infinity: The Tower of Wisdom (or Tall Infinity:
Ultimate Puzzle Action) is a puzzle game for the Playstation. Released in
2003, the game has pretty much fallen under the radar, which is too bad,
considering how good of a game it is.
3. Controls
Directional Buttons: Move character/cursor
X button: Roll block, select option
O button: Exit tutorial, cancel
Start button: Pause game
The Square, Triangle, L, R and other buttons don't work.
4. How to Play
The game is played by rolling blocks so the colored sides match up. To roll
a block, have your character (known only as "The Character") stand on the
block, hold the X button and push left or right, depending on which way you
want to roll the block.
You can roll blocks up and over other blocks, but only if there is at least
one block-length of flat space between your block and the block you're trying
to roll over. You can use this to roll up staircase-like formations.
You can also roll up other blocks to rotate your block on the spot. Normally
rolling your block rotates it 90 degrees, but rolling your block up onto
another block rotates it 180 degrees. Rolling it back only rotates it 90
degrees, so you get an extra 90 degrees of rotation in the way you rolled it.
Matching a block creates two new blocks depending on how the blocks are
oriented. Matching two blocks vertically (the matching sides are on top of
each other) creates two new blocks directly below the block you just rolled.
Matching the two blocks horizontally (the matching sides are next to each
other) creates two new blocks below EACH of the two blocks you just connected.
In both cases, matching turns one of the matched blocks (not the one you're
standing on), gray. Gray blocks cannot be matched to other blocks.
Matching blocks on more than one side creates more blocks. Matching on two
sides creates 6 or 8 blocks, depending on which sides are matched. Matching
on three sides creates 10 blocks.
Whenever blocks are matched a pair of angel wings appears above the character.
Matching another pair of blocks before the wings disappear creates a "chain".
The number of matches on the current chain is displayed in the upper-right
corner of the screen. You can continue making chains for as long as you have
the angel wings above your character. When the wings disappear, your chain
time is over. When this happens, bonus blocks appear depending on how many
matches you got on your current chain, and the border line goes down one level
for every two matches you got in the chain.
As long as your character is on a rolling block, angel wings won't disappear.
You can use this trick to extend the time you have to make chains by rolling
blocks off high levels.
Blocks marked with rotating arrows will only roll in the direction the arrow
is rotating in. Match these as soon as possible so you can roll them into gaps
and not have to deal with them.
5. Normal Game
The object of the normal game is to build the tower as high as you can, as
fast as you can. This game is an arcade-style romp through 8 stages in which
you have to create 10 levels per stage. A level is only considered complete
if it has no gaps in it, so building the tower high on one side won't count
towards finishing the level.
On the far left of the screen is a gauge showing how high
you've built it so far. Building a complete level fills one of the little
bubbles. Fill all the bubbles to go to the next stage. Bubbles illuminated
in red indicate the height of the "Border Line". If the border line catches
up to your current level, the game is over. The little timer in the bottom-
left corner of the screen indicates how long before the border line goes up
one level.
You get points every time you match two blocks. You get extra points if you
match blocks during a chain, or match the blocks on multiple sides. The more
you match, the higher your score.
The normal game comes in 3 difficulty settings: Easy, Normal and Hard. The
harder difficulties have the border line moving up faster, and more arrow
blocks forming when blocks are matched.
6. Score Attack
This mode comes in two varieties: Single Stage and Endless. Single Stage gives
you 10 lines in which to get as many points as you possibly can. Endless mode
is just that, lasting until the border line catches up with your level. The
Endless mode is "Only for the most daring of players". All the strategies that
apply in the normal game apply here.
7. Puzzle Mode
This mode is different than the other modes. When two blocks are matched in
this mode, they turn gray. The object of this mode is to turn all the blocks
with colored sections on them gray. You have a certain number of "steps" in
which to complete the level. Rolling a block one square to the left or right
is one step.
Note: Since the character can walk straight up stacks of blocks, walking one
square left or right can mean walking straight up several layers of blocks.
