01.17.02 I'm back! Please note the new contact information. My e-mail address
is now
[email protected] (I hate it when your ISP just blows over and your
[v1.81] e-mail address in rendered invalid. Sorry to everyone whose e-mails have
been bouncing back for the last few months!). I plan a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR
overhaul of the list. A PDF version as well as an HTML version are planned
(it will be located at my new website: www.herradura.net).
Besides, it gives me a chance to replay one of the best RPGs ever. And you
should replay it too! ^_-
Overview
========
Welcome to the guide! This guide was created for
people who are interested in the useful Pickpocketing
skill found in Star Ocean: The Second Story. The guide
features a small number of Pickpocketing guidelines
and explanations. Also to be found within this
document is a comprehensive list of 'pickpocketable'
items. I made my best effort to make the guide
as easy-to-read as possible, but if you have any
questions, make sure you read the entire document first.
Thanks for your interest and enjoy the guide!
The Joy of Pickpocketing
========================
More likely than not, you've played through
Star Ocean: The Second Story and noticed an interesting
specialty called Pickpocket in the status screen. Still
wondering how it works, are decide to try it out. But
it never worked! "What a waste of time," you probably
said to yourself. Without giving it another second
of thought, you moved on with the game.
Okay okay, so maybe it didn't 'exactly' play out like
it did in the example above, but it was exactly what
happened to me. How little did I know that I was
missing out on one of the most useful skills in the
game!
The main advantage of Pickpocketing is being able to
steal items from nearly every townsperson in the
game - some of them are extremely rare!
Pickpocketing is also one way of manipulating
party members' friendship and emotional levels. This way,
you may be able to determine which ending you might get.
Of course, nothing is perfect. Accumulating the skill
points you need takes a long time and wastes points that
you could use to improve the more vital skills - especially
at the beginning of the game.
Another thing is that if the pickpocket steals items when other
party members are around (in other words, in any situation that
is 'not' in a Private Action), emotional and friendship levels
are lowered for the pickpocket. I think the advantages
far outweigh the downsides, though.
The Procedure
=============
The first priority is to choose your main pickpocket. I
recommend using your hero (the person you control in the
overworld), since the hero is the only person who can steal
during Private Actions.
Now, check and see if the character has the Dexterity talent.
If not, the best (and easiest) to do is to start over. This talent
is the most important thing you need to start Pickpocketing.
Let me repeat: You Need Dexterity! Dexterity You Need! Need You
Dexterity!
Another key ingredient are the Bandit Gloves. You can buy these
in most tool stores. It costs a hefty 40,000 Fol though.
Once you have the gloves, go and buy the skills Sensibility 1
and Sensibility 2 from skill guilds that can be found in almost
every major city. When you buy those, build up the skills
Courage and Poker Face until level 10.
There is also a Pickpocket enhancer called the Magician's Hand.
You'll be able to get it by using the Machinery Specialty.
All right! First, save a game right in front of the city you want
to pickpocket from. Then initiate a private action. After that,
find an unsuspecting citizen. Stand right next to her and press that
handy dandy square button. If you were successful, you get an item.
If you weren't successful, then load your saved game and try again.
Wait a Sec! I Want to Start Pickpocketing NOW!
===============================================
Whoa there, partner. Trying to pickpocket at the
beginning of the game is harder than it looks. Here
are the steps to start pickpocketing at the early
stages of the game:
1) Make sure the character whom you want to pickpocket
with has the talent _dexterity_.
2) Go and buy _Sensibility 1_ from Cross.
(note: you can complete the Cross Cave quest between
these steps)
3) Gain a few levels and then go to Herlie and buy
_Sensibility 2_.
4) Now start leveling up Courage and Poker Face for
your main character until his Pickpocket specialty
is at level 9 or 10.
5) Hoo boy, now start racking up the money you need
in order to buy the Bandit's Gloves. The Heraldry
Forest and (if you're at a higher level) the
Mountain Path west of Cross are great places to
accumulate Fol.
6) After buying the Bandit's Gloves, equip it as an
accessory on the hero and stare at the square
button on your controller for a few moments...
you'll be using that button alot from now on. :)
What Are Some Quick Ways to Get 40,000 Fol?
===========================================
Here are two suggestions I've received:
"Here's a tip on getting enough money to buy that
expensive bandit's glove. First you'll need a good
amount of skill points(I think you'll be fine if
everyone has 80+). Then go to herlie and buy the
sensibility 2 which has playfulness (you need it
anyway because it has poker face). Have all your
party members level up that skill and every time you
do you get fol(100 at first level up, 700 at second
and so on until level 10 when you get 27100fol).
If you have over 100sp I suggest you max out
perseverance first then level up playfulness. Doing
this saves you a lot of time and boring fighting."
(thanks to rt)
"1st. You should complete cross cave or at least build
your self up to level 10 in the cave.
2nd. Go to Mar village and enter the Heraldry Forest fight
around in there until your around at least level 15 (higher
if you didn't let Celine join).
3rd. Follow the path west of Cross save and go up and over
the mountain to the desert area now SAVE now walk around and
fight the green slug monsters (if you run into any of the
other monsters especially the hour glass shaped ones run their
too strong for you, if you get into a surrounded fight with
one hour glass monster and two slugs then focus your attacks
on the hour glass monster first then the slugs).
4th. The Slugs tend to drop Damascus's and Orichalcum's take
them and sell them the Damascus's will get you 1600 fol and
the Orichalcum's over 2000 fol in a short time you'll have
the money you need."
(thanks to Dias Flac)
"I have another way of getting enough $$ for the Bandit's Gloves before
Clik:
Once Celine is in your party, level her up to at least level 9 (to get
Ray). Go the the Heraldy Forest and fight until you have 100 skill
points (the more the better). Use Ray to kill the witches who only have
20 HP. Go to Herlie and buy Sensibility 2 and use the sp on
Perservarance. Use the remaining sp on Recipe, Kitchen Knife, and Good
Eye. Buy some Egg/Diary products which are the cheapest food and keep
trying to make items until she get the talent "Sense of Taste". If you
run low on money, have Rena make some items from the Egg/Diary products
(she probably starts with Sense of Taste). Once she gets the talent, buy
grain and make food from that. Teas that only older characters (such as
Celine) can make have a few thousand FOL resale value. "Ishidaya Tea"
for instance is worth over 8,000 FOL! You should try and make her lvl
8-10 for the best results. Have another character learn Identify to ID
those ?FOODs.
Using that method I was pickpocketing at only at level 10-11 (fighting a
mere 49 battles) and did it in 31/2 hours. I also think this might work
although I've yet to try it:
Use Art to make items (esp Portraits and Treasure Chests) and sell them.
Treasure Chests can be made from Magical Clay and Portraits from Magic
Canvases (both gotten from Herlie). Celine starts with Craft and can
therefore learn Metalwork to make items too."
(thanks to Link!)
..And you're off!
==================
Well now you have all the information you need to go out there and
steal some stuff! I hope I've been some help to you, but nothing can
take the place of experience. Have fun and be careful!
Pickpocketing List
==================
The next part of the guide is the pickpocketing list. It is organized
by town, in the order that most people visit them. Please take note that
I don't have alot of Private Action information. If you would like to
contribute, please contact me!

Also, I've organized the towns into something that
looks like a family tree.

Revision History
================
05.24.00 The pickpocketing list has been updated thanks to Adrianne Parker.
By the way, have all you Star Ocean fans pre-ordered
[v1.8] Star Ocean: Blue Sphere for the GBC yet? I did, but thats
only because I'm extremely obsessive about these things. ;)
If SO:BS just so happens to have a pickpocketing feature, I'll probably
start up a pickpocketing list for that too. :)
04.06.00 Jonathan Ng contributed a gigantic list of additions/revisions to
the pickpocketing list. Thanks Jonathan!
[v1.7]
01.27.00 Made of few revisions and rewrites. This is probably the last
update.
[v1.6]
10.11.99 Another pathetically minor update.
[v1.5]
08.28.99 Minor update. This will probably be the last update for
awhile...
[v1.4a]
08.23.99 - Lacour and Lacour Castle pickpocketing info is now up! Very
special thanks to Link536! Unfortunately, school has already
[v1.4] started and I'm afraid updates won't take place as frequently
as they used to anymore. I am still accepting contributions
though.
08.08.99 - Clik pickpocketing info is now up. Thanks Joe! Meanwhile,
I'm still thinking about how I'm gonna incorporate the
[v1.3] Private Action pickpocketing information into the list.
Oh well, I'll come up with something sooner or later...
Oh yeah, two people told me that you can steal Battle Suits
from Ernest from various places. Thanks guys!
08.05.99 - Raw pickpocketing lists for all Energy Nede cities
are now up. Finally...
[v1.2]
Argh! Somehow, I've managed to lose my raw lists of
Clik and Lacour... I'm such an idiot. I apologize for
the late update. I guess I've been enjoying my new
Neo Geo Pocket Color too much. Now that _most_ of the
cities are accounted for, now its time to start with
the private action section of the guide... which means
I have to start and play _four_ games simultaneously.
Hoooooooooo boy...
By the way, thanks to all the people that gave me
birthday greetings for the last few days. :)
07.30.99 - Minor Update. I've been suffering from a range of
sicknesses for the last few days. Don't worry, a full
[v1.1a] blown update (with a complete raw list of every town
in the game) is bound this weekend. Oh yeah, today is
my birthday.
07.12.99 - Added Lacour continent towns and a few obscure places.
