Hello you Super Robot Freaks. A year ago after Super Robot War F Final
was announced and released, Takara Announced their next entry into the
PSX Game market, Shin Sedai Robot Sakksen BRAVE SAGA. Naturally it
would involve characters from Takara's Yuusha (Hero) Anime Series. The
Yuusha series compared to the eternally popular Gundam saga isn't as
popular. However it has held its own against the Bandai Juggernaught
since its target audience are younger viewers (elementary school aged
children while Gundam was usually Jr.high to High School).
At any case, the usual formula for the typical Yuusha show involves a
young boy (usually in jr.high) who ether stumbles upon an object that
grants him the ability to call upon a robot. Or the robot enlists the
help of a boy (usually in Jr.high) while trying to save the world. Here
is the List of the Series that appear in Brave Saga:
Yuusha Exkaiser
Yaiyo no Yuusha Fribird
Densetsu no Yuusha Dagan
Yuusha Tokkyuu Might Gain
Yuusha Keisatsu J-Decker
Ougan Yuusha Goldran
Yuusha Shirei Daguon
Taiyo no Kiba Daugram
Soukou Kihyou Voltoms
Kikou Kai Galliant
The Last 3 titles are better known as "Fang of the Sun Dugram",
"Armored Trooper Voltoms" and "Panzer World Gallent". As you may have
noticed they arent Yuusha shows, but early 80's Sunrise (known as
"Nippon Sunrise" back then) Mecha shows. In contrast, they are like the
Evangeleon units in SRWF, Just thrown into the game for their namesake
to attract fans of their respective series.
Story (in a nutshell):
On some planet. The Emperor Grandark sends his henchmen to try to
invade earth. However around the earths orbit. A mysterious life force
witnesses hostile forces entering earth. Meanwhile in the VARS (Sorta
like Pokemon, but instead of cute disgusting monsters, you have Robots)
Stadium, our hero Shunpei and his best friend Hiro have made it to the
VARS Finals. The next match places them both against each other to see
who will be the champion. However outside the stadium the Two Geist-
stars
Attack the stadium, almost destroying. Fribird and Exkaiser both show
up and holds off the Geist-Stars attack for the time being. Inside the
stadium Shunpei wakes up and finds the place is on fire. He tries to
look around for his Friend Hiro but sees that where Hiro once was, is
buried under rubble. Thinking that his friend is dead, Shunpei begins
to cry. However His VARS begins to talk to him and introduces himself
as Sei Yuusha (Star Hero) Ban. This of course freaks Shunpei out. Ban
tells him that he needs Shunpei's help in order to fight the Evil
forces that are attacking earth. Shunpei Pulls a Shinji from Evangeleon
and whines how he isn't a fighter and doesn't want to fight. Ban tries
once more to talk some sense into Shunpei, because he senses the great
potential courage in Shunpei, which is why he choose him as a partner.
Ban asks Shunpei to shout out the phrase "Brave Charge!" to activate
his power. Shunpei still being the wimp that he is cant bring himself
to do it. Until his friend Nanako was about to get crushed by falling
debris.. Thus begins the adventure of Shinpei and Sei Yuusha Ban.
Game play:
I think of Brave Saga as the Sakura Taisen for the PSX. The game
structure is very similar to ST (except without the dating aspect),
because each chapter of the game is set up like a real TV Series. Which
are what the makers of the game wanted you to feel. You will be
presented with the simple plot, then the set up (choose who you want to
fight on the map) and go kick butt. However unlike SRW there aren't any
Psycho Spells to use, so you'll have to buy items from the item shop to
heal and resupply your units when needed. Also if two specific units
are right next to each other, they can perform a Combination attack
(just like in Sakura Taisen , except that the both of them aren't in
love). In a future version of this guide I'll list which units can
perform Combination attacks with other units. But in the meantime you
can tell which attacks are the combos by looking at a unit's lists of
attacks, the combo attack is the attack with blue characters.
As for modifications to your units, the only unit you can personally
modify is Ban. Go to the first floor of the VARS base and you can
choose which of the 3 abilities you want to increase (Attack, Hitting
and Defense). Hit L1 or R1 to switch between the stats and hit up or
down to increase or decrease. Eventually later in the game you can
modify your units weapons as well. But you can't do this till like
episode 20 or even sooner. It's one of the rooms on the first floor
again.
Sub Events:
Some of you might not have picked this up. But in-between episodes, if
you go into the rooms of the other heroes (and sometimes in the
training room), you may or may not be asked to participate in a sub
event. Think of them as bonus levels and opportunities to build up your
weaker units. Sometimes sub events are the only way to meet units that
aren't involved in the main plot (such as Black Gaine) and see extra
FMV clips of transformation sequences you wont normally get to see if
you don't find the sub event.
What's Next for this Guide:
I don't plan on writing about every single episode of this game in this
guide because the plot is pretty obvious as you go along. I will
however list the Combination attacks as I promised earlier and any
other secrets that may pop-up in the game. I just wanted to pop this
ultra-Alpha version out so I can generate some (hopefully) constructive
criticism, comments and ideas. I don't plan to spend too much time on
this guide as I am thinking about going back to work the SRWF Final
Episode Guide. The demand for one is building again, especially since
the Playstation version comes out in April, or maybe I'll just start a
Super Hero Sakksen Guide. Banpresto's new RPG featuring characters from
Ultraman , G Gundam , Gundam Wing , The space Sherrif series and
Kikaider to name a few.
