I. Version
=======
v0.4: More details added, used a new structure for the guide
v0.3: Added more details to world of greed so people won't get lost, music room
added, fixed up errors here and there.
v0.2: Started the whole thing..

II. Introduction
============
Ah... This is my first walkthrough I've ever done so bear with me if some
things get confusing or misplaced!
Shin Megami Tensei if... is the third game in the Shin Megami Tensei series. As
with other Japanese games, you should already
have an understand of basic hiragana and katakana, if you don't, you'll find
that it's much harder to master this game (Magic menu, demon contacts,
obviously the storyline) Unlike SMT 1 and 2, if.. wasn't as plot driven and
story intensive. You 'could' probably finish this game if you just enter every
room in the game, again and again... until something happens.
If you need translation help, use Yoshitsune's guide for that. This is a
walkthrough to get through
the game! My japanese is poor, so some parts might not make sense... Most of
the japanese stuff that I didn't understand got
translated by satsu, his EXCELLENT translation guide is at
http://www.popanime.net/comp/shin_megami_tensei_if.txt.

Warning: This walkthrough was written for the SNES version of the game, if
you're playing the PS version, some stuff might've
been added in or changed.. For one I know that there's this... perfect star
system? There's also a function in the Appraisal shop for you to gain abilities
and items by having your PS (2) detect other Atlus game saves on your memory
card.

Also there might be some gaps around or grammar errors, please ignore them...
I'm not very good at spell checking..

III. Walkthrough
===========
School
------

When you press new game, you'll be greeted by Nova, the fortune telling
machine, it'll ask you for your gender, name and some
questions. Use Yoshitsune's guide for the meaning of those questions. The
answers will affect your starting stats and
various aspects of you. After it gives you your fortune, you'll see a teenage
boy, giving you a speech about something..
Then you'll wake up in the classroom of 2-D, its after school and suddenly the
room shakes and the sky outside turns purple,
everyone panics and Yumi will talk to you, now you get to decide to whether
take Yumi as your partner or not.

Mini-section 1: Partners
------------------------
Choosing your partner is very important because depending on your partner, your
game will have drastic changes, such as differnt worlds, different guardians
and different storylines:

Yumi: Female, simpliest of them all, no 'bonus' stages
Charlie: Male, gets 'World of Anger', hard because of the lack of strong demon
fights before the final boss
Reiko : Female, same as Yumi with an extra 'Hazama's Mind' world
Akira: Male, secret character, can only be gotten after you finish the game
once. Completely different and new worlds from other three. Hard because of the
lack of centralised towns and strong demon fights

How to get these four partners:

Yumi: Press yes when Yumi talks to you after the school falls into darkness
Charlie: Reject Yumi and go to 2-E on 3F (You will get a better starting weapon
if you choose Charlie)
Reiko: Reject Yumi and Reiko, go to the Music room, walk around for a while, go
to the club room and back to music, if Reiko
is not there, walk around a bit more, then come back.
Akira: Reject all other partners, talk to clubroom members. Talk to the teacher
that blocks the corridors on 3F, go to 1F and walk into the dead-end square
near the music room.
------------------------------------------------

-Note: I still haven't written up the guide for Akira yet, because none of the
following applies if you are using Akira -

Now that you have your partner, go to 1F and go to the clubrooms, note: if you
accidently went into the corridor with the
monsters in it without weapons, keep trying to run and get out of there because
you can't attack them without any weapons!
Now search each of the rooms in the clubroom corridor to get some weapons and
armors, equip them and head back out, outside the computer room a student will
call for help because a demon is attacking him, kill the demon. The student
will introduce himself, he is the student head (captain?) of the computer club.
Save and go to 2-G on the 3F. The teacher will give you the arm mounted
computer and now you can talk to demons! When you go out of 2-G, turn left and
walk straight 1 step and the teenager will talk to you again, walk another step
and go into the room on your right to meet Jack Frost, say yes and he'll join
your party. Don't summon him yet because you only have enough Mag to keep him
surviving for 8 steps.
Now go down to 1F and save, then go into the corridor that's filled with
monsters.
At this point, I'd kill my partner so that he/she can learn magic. Note that
your main character cannot learn magic, but benefits from added stats if he/she
DOES get a guardian.
The easiest way to do this is to unequip your partner's weapons and change your
party positions so that your partner is in front of your main character. Now go
to the door that says Gym, summon Jack Frost, go in and you'll find the ring of
modesty. Then your first boss will attack you!

Boss 1
Approx. HP: 30
To defeat this very easy boss, just use your partner's strongest magic once
(usually a thunder type magic), then attack it, repeat if needed.
Reward: Ring of Modesty

After you get the ring of modesty back, heal and save, then go to the Labo, the
science teacher will attack you!

Boss 2
Approx. HP: 50
Repeat steps to kill Boss 1.
Reward: 20 Normal Bullets (Sometimes he doesn't give you 20 bullets...?)

Now leave the school via the exit on 3F.

Hub
---
You'll arrive in a small area filled with doors, go into the room in the middle
to use the ring. The door to the world of
pride will be unlocked. Go into the world of pride.

World of Pride
--------------
Extremely straight forward world, theres a Kaifuku on B1F near the gate and
theres a town on 1F. The boss is on 5F. Make sure
that you buy the $4000 gun in the weapon shop, Medicine tablets, poison and
paralysis heal in the Yorozuya. You'll meet the
teenager again. On 2F theres a guy that will tell you about demon types,
aligement and demons that can't be talked into your
party. Work your way up towards 5F, getting the treasure chests, when you get
to 5F and you enter a 3x3 room with
empty spaces everywhere and a door in the middle, thats the boss, summon your
demons and heal, then walk in.

Boss 3
Approx. HP: 100
If you didn't buy the $4000 gun in the weapon shop in Town, it will be harder
to beating this boss. It has a really strong
thunder attack that will probally leave your party half dead if they defend,
and dead if they didn't defend. It would be
easier if you have talked a few demons into your party to help with this battle.
Reward: Ring of Moderation

After you've defeated the boss. Walk down to 4F and take the geyser out, go
into the healing pool and revive any dead demons.
If you want to save money and be stingy, don't heal the human characters and
get them healed free at the school.

Hub
---
Use the ring on portal, go into the world of gluttony.

World of Gluttony
-----------------
When you walk in the corridor that is in front of the gate, somwhere in the
middle it will warp you to a different direction,
just use the auto-map to find the correct way to continue, you'll see the
teenager boy again and he'll give you another
speech. Continue on and you'll get warped again, you'll reach a stair down, go
down and you'll find a stair up soon after,
don't go into it yet, explore the rest of this level first. You'll find a
casino and a luck incense.

Mini Section 2: Casino
----------------------
In the world of gluttony is the casino, there are four games to be played:

Slot:
There are two types of slot: Lucky Symbol and Super 27
I have no idea what those shiny buttons do but everything you play it you'll
use one coin.

Big and Small:
The game that anyone can understand! One game costs 10 coins and repeating wins
get you items! Heres the list:
1 Star: None
2 Star: Medicine Tablet (Heals a little bit)
3 Star: Poison Heal
4 Star: Paralysis Heal
5 Star: Stone Heal...?
6 Star: Muscle Drink (Poisonous? Check at Appraisal)
7 Star: ? (Revives for 1/8 HP)
8 Star: ? (Something to do with attack level of your characters?)
9 Star: Bronze Box (Battle a demon that you've met before, might fail sometimes)
10 Star: Chakra Pot (Fully restores MP)

You can take your prize whenever you want after you have won your first round,
but if you lose before you take your prize
you get nothing!

Keno:
Choose 16 numbers and depending on how much number matches, you win coins!
(Duh) Max. amount of coins that you can bet is
100. This is one of the most profitable games in the casino.

Russian:
Well I can't play the game right now so I really have no idea what it is.
Apparantly sometimes the owner won't be there, if this happens you'll have to
restart the game and load to see if he's there..

Cashier:
Note that some equipments cannot be equiped by girls... They're only selling
armors now but they'll sell weapons as soon as
you finish this world. They also sell some bronze (Silver?) cards to use at
Codebreaker games.

Codebreaker:
This kind of isn't a casino game but it's gambling anyway... Here you will
guess a four digit code. You have 9 tries until
you lose. The type of item you'll win changes with each incorrect guess.

----------------------

Now go back up to B1F with the new stairs that you found, keep going and the
first door to your right leads to a magical
chest. Continuing on will lead you to a stair doing down. You'll find a stair
up and a geyser. Go up, then you'll find a
door to your left, if you check your map you'll see that is an one-way door
back to the start, so avoid that door and
continue on and go down. After w while you'll warp directions, use the map to
find the right way and go on. Go up, you'll
find another geyser and a health incense. Go down to find a magic incense, go
down again to find a town. After you have
finished healing, buying and fushioning etc. go down again. Now you'll be on
B4F, go down again. You'll be in a big room,
from here the path splits into two, the correct way is to go forward, turn
right and go down to B6F and B7F. On B7F you'll
find a Recorder, save there, and go into the Labo.

Boss 4 Approx. HP: 150

Use stragegy for every other boss...
Reward: Microplasma

now go back to B5F and take the other door in that really big room. Go up to
B4F, you'll end up in a room where you'll fall
TO B5F. Walk out of the room and you'll slide and fall (again) into B6F. Go
down into B7F, don't go into the one-way door,
that leads you back to where the boss was, go down into B8F, you'll end up with
two rooms next to eachother, one with an orc
and one with two chefs. Go into the first room and then go into the second
room, say yes and you'll be eaten by the orc.
In some areas of the orc you'll be hurt by acid (or something). One of the
items stops this but I'm not sure of its name..
The enemies in the orc is hard, so summon a few demons to help you. Note that
none of the demons here can be talked into
joining your party so don't bother paying them.. You'll come to a crossroad
with a door to your left and a door to your
front. Choose the one on your left and continue on, then you'll see a door to
your left a little and a door to your front,
choose the front. Then you'll come across three doors, this square also warps
your direction so first face the front using
the map, then go into the door on your left. You'll warp to a different
location and the only door out is the boss.

Boss 5 Approx. HP: 170

He'll shoot poison stings at you so try to have a healer in your party, if not,
use the heroes to use poison heals on your
group. Poison in battle greatly reduces your offensive power! His weakness is
ice so use Jack Frost to use his magic, it'll freeze him sometimes and he'll
miss a turn if the ice magic hits him before the boss attacks.
Reward: Ring of Diligence

The orc will turn into the principle and he'll return to the school. Now head
back to B6F using the way that you came from
the second time and use the geyser to get out.

Hub
---
Use the ring on the portal, go into the world of Sloth. If you want the new
casino weapons, get back out, go into the
world of gluttony and buy them if you want to, unfortunately girls can't equip
anything there now... The armors have been
taken back and now some more items are on sale.
Now head back to the world of sloth.

World Of Sloth
-----------------
This world is HARD! If your level is under 15, train a bit in B1F and B2F, but
DON'T go into B3F unless you're prepared.
This world is prety small, B1F and B2F are just corridors, B3F is confusing if
you don't know what is happening.
The teenager boy will talk to you again. Theres a code-breaker on B1F. On B2F
theres a Rag's, Kaifuku and a Jakyo.
On B3F you'll see everywhere students forced to work to dig out rooms. In one
of the room you'll find the princple laying
on the ground, he'll ask you to help him dig, say yes for every time he asks
you, you'll dig up an appraisal shop, use the
appraisal shop on all of your weapons and armors, because sometimes the weapon
and armor's effect doesn't work unless
appraisaled, and its cheap anyway. Also if you don't have Charlie as your
partner, another student will ask you to help him
dig, it'll lead to a stone statue of two person. Now go back to B2F and walk
back and forth in one of the long corridors,
keep walking until about 5-6 lunar cycles (full moon to full-moon) has passed.
now go back down and walk around, you should
have leveled about 20 levels and got a LOT of money and MAG. Now that the slave
students have dug up more rooms, you should
find some treasure chests. The boss of this world is in a room that needs to be
dug up, it's entrance is closest to the
teacher who doesn't dig up any new rooms at all.

Boss 6 Approx. HP: 460

This boss uses thunder spells that attacks your whole party, if you have gotten
the thunder absorbing armor in the casino,
this would be a lot easier. It also sometimes roar and binds your party. It
also uses whip lash (Or something) which deals
aroudn 50 damage to your party. If you've gotten the King Frost rod (From the
Casino), then this battle should be a breeze.
Reward: None

After the battle, walk around for a bit more, then in one of the chests you'll
find the ring of Generosity. There's also an
item that lets you listen to BGM in the music room. It's in one of the chest
dug up by the students.. Now head out.

Mini-Section 3 - Split Path
---------------------------
After the world of Sloth, depending on which character you get, you'll get
different worlds.
Yumi - World Of Envy, school
Charlie - World Of Anger (Bah, no high level demons for leveling up)
Reiko - World Of Envy, School

Hub
---
Use the ring on the portal, the world of envy will open.

World Of Envy
-------------
This world is THE most annoying world in this game (except for the sloth world
and the amount of time spent back and forth..)
Some squares are blanked out and you can't see where you're going, use the
mapper spell to help you. You'll find two stairs
up, one is to a town and another is continuing with the dungeon. Note: Buy the
most expensive gun in the weapon shop! This
will help you a lot when you battle the boss of this world, you should have
enough money from the world of sloth to buy this.
On the next level depending on which directions you go, you will slide to the
next room. On L3F you can't use your computer,
so summon your demons on L2F and cast the mapper spell because your auto-map
won't work.
When you get to L4F, you'll get to choose whether to go straight, or turn left.
The correct path is to
go straight. There's a Kaifuku somewhere in the blue area but the name sign
won't pop up even if you face it. Continuing up,
more blue areas and annoying warps... On L6F theres a geyser. If you go into a
room  with a door to your left and right,
don't go into the room on your right, only use that when you've killed the boss
in this world. Now go into the room that is
surrounded by a lot of space, now this part splits into two:
Yumi: She'll try to slap you, you'll get the choice of either blocking her
slaps (which does you damage), or warp back to the
entrance. Block three (ouch) times to start the boss fight.
Reiko: This is easier, she just gives you the choice of either leaving or
fighting the boss, no slapping involved! Yes sends
you back to the entrance, No starts the battle.

Boss 7 Approx. HP: 870

This is TOUGH! The boss has psycho magic powers and instant death spells!
First, if you have any demons/items that have the
ability to block instant death spells, use it! If your main character's
intellegence is low then you'll have a hard time
trying to winning this. She has the ability to cause all kinds of status
problems, from bat to sleep to bind! Try to stick to
physical attacks as magical attacks won't do much damage.
Reward: 20 ? Bullets

You'll get the Ring of Unselfishness

Now head back out, somewhere the cyborg science teacher will attack you again.
(The position of the science teacher actually changes, depending on how you are
trying to get out of this world)

Boss 8 Approx. HP: 780

This is about the opposite of the boss you've just faced. He'll use various
physical attacks to attack your party. Use plans
from Boss 1 etc.

Reward: 20 ? Bullets

Now take the geyser out.

Hub
---
Use ring on portal, go into the world of greed.

World Of Greed
--------------
Ok, this world is BIG! Treat it like the world of gluttony except the colour is
brown-ish. And the Level maps are COMPLETELY
screwed! Because it is! Theres about three different L3Fs, L2Fs and L1Fs...
Don't take any treasures yet, because this will
make the boss of this world harder to beat. The demons here are really tough,
even if you're on LV30.
Theres a casino on L2F somewhere if you have the urge to gamble, but the items
offered are the same as the other casino.
Okay, first go down to L2F, you'll decide whether to go left or right, if you
want to get COMPLETELY lost then go left, if
you want to get on with this world then go right. Keep going and it'll
auto-slide. When you stop, turn left and go downstair.
Now walk a very long path that leads to a stairs up. Then walk a straight path,
ignoring doors, and go downstairs again.
You'll pass a Labo, remember where it is. Now go downstairs to B1F. In this
town theres a room where a guy will give you the
masamune, a very strong fusion sword. Now you can do sword fusion! (Only with
some demons and swords) Now there are four
different stairs up, three of them leads to treasure or dead ends, the correct
one is the one in the upper right corner.
The it goes on until L4F, there are lots and lots of treasure on the way, if
you THINK you can beat the boss with ease then
take them if you want, they mostly contain items used in battle and some
weapons and armor that can be bought at the town
weapon and armor shop. In L4F you'll battle a fox.

Boss 9 Approx. HP: ?
This boss will be either strong or weak depending on how much treasure you took
from this world. I didn't take any items from
this world and I killed him in one round. I'm not sure how much harder he will
be if you took more treasures. He will have
around 200 more HP every time you take a treasure, not sure tho..

When you kill it, the teacher will take the ring and escape to his Labo, which
you should've found somewhere near the first
series of levels. Its two squares south of the recorder on L1F.

Boss 10 Approx. HP: 2000 (!)

This teacher is a boosted version of Boss 8, stronger physical attacks! Weak
characters should stay at back row to avoid
1-hit kills. You would win this battle easier if anyone in your party has the
physical attack reflection spell.

Reward: None

You'll recieve the ring of Unselfishness. Use the geyser near the Labo to get
out.

Hub
---
Use the ring on the portal. You'll warp to the school.

School
------
Everyone has disappeared, now you can go up to 4F. This place's demon is hard!
At LV40 each of the battles gives you approx.
2000 exp! And the death skull has really strong death spells so be careful.
Theres a demon on L5F that's LV 80+, if you beat it, you'll get about 20000
exp! For easy levels, use the bronze box you win from the casino to
battle it again if you need leveling up. There's a small maze on 6F, use the
mapper spell to help you move towards the left without being trapped inside
those one way doors. Continuing on, L7F to L10F are safe areas and are very
small. Hazama is on L11F.

http://home9.highway.ne.jp/mana/hazama.htm
Information on Hazama was taken from this site.

Hazama: HP: 20000

Ok... as the last boss this is a tough one! Before you enter this battle, you
need a strong demon who can cast spells that
can restore battle stats (attack, defense, accuracy etc.), spells that improve
your own stats (focus the most on attack) and
obviously a healer who can cast heal on ALL party members because his ice magic
freezes all of your party, skipping one turn
for people who didn't attack before the ice magic. Hazama is immune from ice,
thunder and all status changers. It also
reflects any instant death spells. His stats dropper ability is really
annoying, if you don't restore your stats, it'll be
nearly impossible to hit it because of the low accuracy. Just keep
attacking/cast improvement spells/heal and you should win.
Note: Don't use the King Frost rod! It'll have no effect on Hazama.

-Yumi partner choosers finish here-

IV. Hints and other interesting stuff
=====
Easy demon level up:
In the school corridor, near the gym, the only four demons that are there are
the zombie dog, poltgerist, pixie and the
dancing fire wielding pixie (Willy). If you fuse pixie with Willy you'll get an
Aquans, fuse this to (nearly) any other demon
for a free boost! (This type of demon is called the Seirei) You can also get
Seireis at the RAG shop in the world of Sloth.
(Thanks to Masakado)

Stats Spells:
Stats spells that increase/decrease attacks and defense are VERY VERY useful!!!
Especially in boss battle, one decrease
defense spell on a boss can double or even triple your attack damages! Combined
with increase attack spells it would make a 50 damage hit cause over 300+
damage!

Medical teacher:
Shes always there and will heal your human characters for free, even if the
whole school's been enslaved by demons, when
everyone's been abducted by a demon king, shes ALWAYS there! She will also give
you medicine tablets at the beginning of the game. (If you choose Eriko as your
partner, Hazama will talk about the medical teacher before you battle him, I'll
ask someone to translate it sooooon.)

V. The guardian gauge
==================
(Masakado helped a lot in this section..)
So what is the guardian gauge? If you've noticed, everytime you die (The
humans) you'll get a new guardian, on the main
character, this will increase or decrease his/her stats. On your aprtner it'll
give him/her new spells.
How to read the guardian gauge:
If it's yellow, when you die you'll get a weaker guardian.
If its red, you'll get a stronger guardian, depending on how filled the guage
is, you'll might get a level jump for your
guardian. The gauge fills up when you get experience.
To see the gauge, press X on your main character status screen.

Your partner and your guardian:
One bad aspect of having a new guardian is that some of it's spells might
overwrite the useful spells you might have, such as  stats improvers or mapper
(Essential in non-comp areas). Unfortunately, you won't be able to control what
kind of spells you want erased (you can in Devil Children). So if you don't
want your precious spells erased, either level up more to increase your spell
capacity or just don't die!

The Music Room
==============
In the world of sloth, theres an item that lets you listen to BGM, you need
that item and (I think) finish world of envy
or atleast up to the part where your female partner runs away. To listen to the
music, just bring that item to the Music room
at 1F of the school AFTER you've entered the world of Envy/Anger.
