SaGa Frontier Complete Monster Item Drop Guide

So, it's my first FAQ.  I'm not a big talker so I'm going to keep things pretty
simple.  This is the complete list of every item every monster drops.  I
discovered it by using XVI32 (a simple hex editor) to open the files in the
game's B_MDATA folder.  I had originally wanted to find the skills you can
absorb from each monster with your monsters, but since that was confusing in
the least, I took a different route, and it seems to have paid off.

Search for the following things using Ctrl+F (Find) to get to where you want to
go more quickly:

1. Monster list
2. Item list

If you'd like to see where the drops are yourself, you'll need three things.
First, SaGa Frontier, of course, although I doubt you'd be here if you didn't
have it.  Second, a hex editing program, or even one that views hex.  XVI32 is
very simple and free.  Third, an account at CMGSCCC, so you can verify the item
values yourself.

If you have all that, go ahead and put the disc in your computer.  Navigate to
the B_MDATA folder.  You'll see two useless files (BOTTOM and TOP) and then the
256 monster files.  Yes, there really are 256 monsters in the game, although
some are repeats (the final being NotUse).  If you'd like to see which monster
resides in which file, open up the SLUS_940.32 file in the root directory of
the CD.  Hold Ctrl and hit F to open up the find box and type in Rocky.  By
default, XVI32 searches case sensitive, so if that's the program you're using,
make sure to capitalize the R in Rocky.  The first result will be at address
106F8.  In XVI32, the left side of the screen is the code, and the right side
is any text the code spells out (in hex, certain values stand for certain
letters).

The order of the enemies you see here is the order they appear in the files in
the B_MDATA folder.  How did I know this?  I didn't.  But I assumed as much
when looking for the data.  And I only guessed that the M in B_MDATA stood for
"monster".  So, yes, I had some pretty lucky guesses here.

If you can get on to CMGSCCC, you can do some searching and verifying yourself.
If not, you can take my word for it.  Let's go to a monster we're all pretty
sure we know the item drops for: Abyssbat.  Abyssbat is monster 185 so you want
to open the M185 file in your hex editor.  Now, according to one of the FAQs
here, Abyssbat drops a PowerCure, an Egg Hat, a WindShell, and the mighty
LightRifle.  In Abyssbat's file, the first item is located at address 2A806.
How do I know that's an item drop?  That's where CMGSCCC comes in handy.  The
value you see at this address is B6, right?  Well, CMGSCCC has a list full of
item digits that you can use to cheat items into your inventory.  But they
didn't just make these up.  These come from the game's actual programming, of
course.  So scroll to B6 and you'll see it's Egg Hat.  It may be in a different
order, but it's familiar nonetheless.  The next value in the monster file is
02.  Back in the item digits, we see this is MaxCure.  Hmm.  So perhaps the
guide we were looking at had something wrong?  We'll continue.  The next digit
is D2.  That's the WindShell.  And 3F is the mighty LightRifle.  Just some
simple research is all it takes to figure this out.

How do you find the item drops for the rest of the monsters?  Simple.  They're
ALWAYS in the EXACT same place in the file.  But don't think that's address
2A806.  All monsters have a different amount of data.  Instead, scroll to the
very end of the file and, hit the left key 33 times.  The first item drop is
always 33 away from the end of the file.  And it's as simple as that.  Now you
can double-check me if you want, although, with how time-consuming it is, I
don't recommend it.  Mainly, I wrote the tutorial you see here for those
curious on how to do something like this themselves, and to show that my
information is accurate and trustworthy.  After all, anyone could just waltz in
and claim to have every item drop, but I doubt anyone has ever actually got
them all by his/herself.

Anyway, onto the lists.  The first list is by monster, following with the four
items it drops.  Note that a lot of monsters have a row of dashes as an item;
it just means they don't drop anything there.  Some monsters don't drop
anything at all.  Who needs them anyway.  Some monsters drop the same item more
than once.  For example, the Skullasaurus drops three slots of BoneBreast, and
then the EMES Tag (anyone who has tried to get EMES Tags from that monster
could probably see that one coming).  Suzaku drops FireLeather, FireLeather,
FireLeather and... FireLeather.  So if you beat him, you're getting
FireLeather.  Also, it seems that if a monster has an item in the first
position, that the item is dropped 100% of the time if nothing else is dropped
in that battle.

The second section contains a list sorted by item, followed by what monster
drops it.  And now, no more talking; I've talked enough (or maybe even too
much).

So, what does this all mean?  Well, I found some pretty useful stuff, but only
one of them was (in my opinion) really groundbreaking, and that was that the
D-Tractor not only drops items, but it drops one that cannot be found anywhere
else (except on T260's file): the Bumper.

As much as I love this fact, for the people that actually want to have every
item, it poses an issue: the D-Tractor can only be found (as far as I know)
amongst rank 1 humans.  I have never been able to find it amongst mecs or any
other type of enemy.  And even then, it's rank 1.  If you've passed rank 1 up,
you can kiss the Bumper goodbye.

And don't suggest that the information is incorrect.  I tested it myself the
night I figured it out.  I loaded my Blue file (which had a total of 16 minutes)
and went to the Koorong sewers (the one near Dr. Nusakan's place).  I fought
the humans there, restarting until I found the D-Tractor.  Sure enough, after
hours of trying, it dropped me the Bumper.  So, if I can suggest anything to
players that want every item, it is this: get the Bumper from the D-Tractor
IMMEDIATELY.  FIRST THING YOU DO.  Head to that section of Koorong and start
knockin D-Tractors out.  It will show up, I promise you.

Any other items you can always get, it seems.

And that's the end of this FAQ.  No special thanks or anything like that, since
I finished this in two days with nobody's help.  Although I guess GameFAQs and
XVI32 deserve some credit, don't they.  And the guys on the boards for showing
such gratitude for this simple document, and for always answering my questions,
even if they didn't have a solution.

And also, don't plagiarize this.  Please.  Just don't.  It's not even 40 KB.
