I wrote up this FAQ for R4 since there were only two of them on GameFAQS, and
that I've played the crap out of it, so I know A LOT about this game. I also ran
out of games to write FAQs for, so I just decided to write one for one of the
best Arcade racers EVER. I absolutley love racing games, since I'ver writen
racing game FAQs for this, GT 2, Need For Speed 4, Hydro Thunder, Sega Rally 2,
and Crazy Taxi. Hope that this helps anyone out there with trobles with R4. Good

My Review of R4:
-----------------
Ridge Racer Type 4 is a great racing game. I won't lie to you.
But in terms of depth and variety, its just not as advanced as
Gran Turismo. R4 is a great arcade game, with speed and graphics
that'll make your jaw drop, but it lacks enough depth to keep
players coming nack for more.

Graphics: (10/10)- By far the best and most beautiful looking
racing game on the Playstation, even better than Gran Turismo,
which is damned good. R4 moves at a medium resolution, and at
a smooth 30 fps, without any slowdown. It just looks so good,
that the graphics will make you proud to own a Playstation.

Sound: (9/10)- Once again, the sound department in R4 is
astounding. I just love the musical tracks, and have even
imported the soundtrack. The sound effects are also well
done, and add realism to the game. On a side note, even though
the music tracks are good, the special Pac-Man theme song you
get once you receive the Pac-Man car is one of the most catchy
tunes in a videogame.

Control: (9/10)- Controlling your car in R4 is very easy to do,
thanks to the game's arcade-like nature. You can either drift
or use grip type cars, although I prefer the drift type overall,
thanks to the maneuverability of these vehicles. Players can use
the JogCon, NegCon, or just the plain-old Dual Shock. I have yet
to play it with either the JogCon or the NegCon controllers, so
I can only recommend the Dual Shock. The control is very responsive,
and you'll be winning races in no time with some practice.

Gameplay: (7/10)- This is where R4 has its problems. I just don't
think R4 knows what it wants to be, arcade or simulation. On one
side, it has its arcade-like control and fake cars, and on its
other side, it has upgradable cars and over 300 of them to boot
(although most of them are just alternative color designs and
nothing else). Even though R4 is incredibly fun, it does tend
to be on the weak side, without the depth of Gran Turismo and
only having eight tracks.

Replay: (7/10)- Like I said earlier, R4 is extremely fun to play.
But after a few timesthrough the Grand Prix mode and the tracks
become repetitive and boring. The two-player is great fun though,
without any loss of frame-rate, its very smooth. Just don't expect
Gran Turismo type of replayability.

Buy/Rent- If you are a fan of racing games or the Ridge Racer
series, then go ahead and buy it. But if you are looking for a
deep racing simulation, then either rent it, or look elsewhere.

Grand Prix:
The Main Mode of R4, where you assume the role of a
professional driver on a racing team. You and a manager
must work together to win the Grand Prix Mode.

Time Attack:
This is a basic addition to R4, and all racing games.
The Time Attack Mode is where you choose a car and a
track, and race by yourself to attempt to beat the best
times for that track. You can use any cars; The preset
ones, or the ones that you've won from the Grand Prix
mode (although you must register the cars you wish to
use to your Garage).

VS Battle:
Another basic mode, the VS Battle is where you and
a friend go head-to-head in a single race. You can
also use any cars you've won in Grand Prix mode.

Garage:
The Garage mode is where you can register any cars
that you've won in the Grand Prix mode. Once you've
registered a car into your Garage, you can then use
those cars in Time Attack and VS Battle modes.

Records:
You can view any trophies that you've won from the
Grand Prix mode in the Records mode.

Save & Load:
This mode is where you can save and load your game.
You can also load and save stuff onto your
PocketStation, if you HAVE one.

Options:
Use this mode to change controller settings, screen
display, and sound volumes. You can also use the
Music Player here.

7. R4 Grand Prix Mode

The Grand Prix Mode is the meat of the game. This is where you will win all of
your cars. The Grand Prix Mode consists of "Heats", or series' of races. There
are a total of THREE Heats within the Grand Prix Mode.

REQUIREMENTS:

Heat 1: Place 3rd or better
Heat 2: Place 2nd or better
Final GP: Place in first place

There are a total of FOUR trials for each Heat. This means that you only have
three chances to meet the requirement for that Heat. If you fail to meet the
requirement, you will be forced to quit the Heat.

9. Tips

- Use Drift-style cars. Using the Drifting technique is MUCH easier
then using Grip-style handling. Drifting also saves you time
around the corners.

- Use Automatic, not manual. Automatics are much easier to use,
since the car changes gears BY ITSELF. Manual transmission is
only for Professionals.

- Unlock all the tracks at the beginning. Just go through the
Grand Prix mode once to open up all the tracks, that way you'll
have them open to practice on if you are having trouble with them
in Grand Prix mode.

- Try not to bump other cars. Even though it's been toned down,
bumping into cars STILL causes you to slow down and the other
driver to get a speed boost. Of course, it also works the other
way...

- Use a Stage 4 car for the Time Attack mode. When you use the
fastest car in the Time Attack mode, you'll get the fastest time.

- Try not to bump into walls. Just like when you bump into another
car, bumping into walls slows you down.

- Experiment with variations. Try using a French Car with the Italian
racing team or vice versa. Try using a USA Car with the Japanese
racing team. These different variations will change the look of
your car(s), so experiment to find the car that suits your style.
You can also use the same Team with the same Car manufacturer from
the same countries (i.e- French car with the French team), but
it's not as fun to play as. :p

Open up all 320 cars in the game to receive the elusive
Pac-Man car.

Other Four Tracks:
Once you beat the Grand Prix Mode once, you will unlock
remaining four tracks. These tracks will be playable
in all modes from now on.

1) Q: How many cars are there in R4?

A: 321 cars total. Including different colors.

2) Q: Are there any hidden ones?

A: Only one, and it's the Pac-Man car.

3) Q: Any hidden tracks?

A: Only to four other tracks that you unlock after you beat the
Grand Prix mode.

4) Q: Is the Pac-Man car cool?

A: Yep, and the music it plays when you race it is AWESOME.

5) Q: Why is there decal editing?

A: I dunno. Maybe Namco wanted to be original. I think it's cool.

6) Q: Which car is the fastest car?

A: Utopia is the fastest car, with 399 mph.

7) Q: How long does it take to open up ALL the cars?

A: Forever.

8) Q: Which is the best type of car to use?

A: Drift cars are easier to use, once you get used to them.

9) Q: How old are you?

A: None of your business! :p

10) Q: Is there a second Disc with R4?

A: Yep, and it has the Original Ridge Racer (60fps),
along with some demos from Namco. It's worth the price
of the whole game to get. Actually, you get it with the
game for free, so it doesn't matter if you want it or not,
because you'll get it anyways. :p

11) Q: Is the JogCon worth getting?

A: I've only used the JogCon once with R4, and while it was
different, it still doesn't beat the good ol' Dual Shock.

12) Q: Does the game come with the JogCon?

A: Only in limited supplies. You can either buy the game by
itself, or you can buy it with the JogCon in a bundle.
The bundle will cost about $20 extra though. In my
opinion, it's not really worth it. Just buy the regular
game without the JogCon.

13) Q: Is R4 better than Gran Turismo?

A: Not really, but it DOES come close, and is a great arcade
game.

14) Q: IS R4 better than Gran Turismo 2?

A: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! That's a good one.
