This FAQ uses Shift-JIS encoding to display Japanese kana (characters).
Browsers such as Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) support
CJK encoding inherently, but common browsers such as MS Internet Explorer
require you to update your system (windowsupdate.microsoft.com). Otherwise,
I recommend you download a Japanese-English word processor called JWPce.

5)GAMEPLAY BASICS
==============================================================================
The whole concept behind Mr. Driller Great is guess what? Drilling!
The gameplay is basically what I would call a cross between it's predecessor
"Dig Dug" & the puzzle game "Puyo Puyo".
The playing area consists of a large stack of coloured blocks. As the
Drillers you must dig through these blocks to reach the given depth thus
finishing the level, except in the Space Stage in Mission Driller Mode and
the Driller Survival Mode where the pile of blocks is infinite.
When you drill into a Puzzle Block (Blocks of pastel shades of yellow, blue,
red & green), it and all surrounding blocks of the same colour will dissolve.
Also if a segment made of 4 or more blocks is created due to falling blocks,
all blocks in that segment will dissolve. There also are Crystal Blocks which
will eventually dissolve after flashing. And White Blocks, which look like
iced vanilla donuts, and are completely inert so they will not combine into
segments with other White Blocks. Every 100 metres there is a large block
that once dissolved will clear all blocks above it.
Your Character will die if they get crushed by any falling blocks.
Brown X-Blocks take 5 drills to dissolve and will come at a cost of 20% of
your Air Supply in Mission Driller Mode and at a cost of 5 seconds
in Time Attack Driller Mode. Silver X-Blocks are impenetrable. Your
Driller can die by running out of Air, so try to collect as many of the Air
Capsules as you can during your descent, as they increase your Air Supply by
20%.
Deep into the different levels the Air Capsules will be encased in X-Blocks,
to get to them you must make four X-Blocks link up so they dissolve. Because
if you drill an X-Block out of the way, the 20% of your air you use to
dissolve the X-Block would negate the 20% you get from the Air Capsule.
==============================================================================
6)MISSION DRILLER
==============================================================================
Mission Driller is the main play mode of Mr. Driller Great. The object of
Mission Driller is to drill your way through the blocks to the required depth
of the difficulty, the only exception is the Space Stage, which is more like
the Endless Mode in Mr. Driller 2, as it goes on forever. You will start in
each stage with 3 lives, but every time you get crushed by a Block or run out
of Air you will loose a life.
Initially there are four Difficulty Levels/Locations, they are:
--------------------
India (インディア)
Easy (初級)
500m Deep (深さ)
--------------------
America (アメリカ)
Normal (中級)
1000m Deep (深さ)
--------------------
Egypt (エジプト)
Hard (上級)
2000m Deep (深さ)
--------------------
Space (宇宙)
Very Hard (超上級)
Endless (エンドレス)
--------------------
But once India, America and Egypt have been cleared,
another Stage will be available:
------------------
North Pole (北極)
Very Hard (超上級)
2000m Deep (深さ)
------------------
The fact the Space Stage is "Endless" is not the only difference it has with
the other stages. It is littered with Mystery Items (「?」アイテム), the
outcome of collecting one can be a Plus Effect which is seen as a blue icon,
and a Minus Effect which is seen as a red icon. Here is a list of all the
effects:
Plus Effects
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Barrier - A little person in a bubble, will protect your body from a falling
block once. Works for a limited time.
Slow - A block with waves above it, causes the blocks to fall slower for
a limited time.
Boots - A winged boot, increases your movement speed.
Full Air - Air Capsule with the word FULL above it, fills up your air supply.
Max Up - A Air Capsule with a double headed arrow above it, increases the
capacity of your air supply by 5%.
Erase - A explosion, destroys every block on-screen.
Minus Effects
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Crystal - A Crystal Block, turns blocks randomly into Crystal Blocks.
White - A White Block, turns blocks randomly into White Blocks.
X-Block - A X-Block, turns blocks randomly into X-Blocks.
Half Air - A half full Air Capsule with the word HALF above it, halves your
current air supply.
Turn - A right angle with 90゜, swivels all blocks on-screen 90゜ around
your driller.
Flip - A curved arrow, flips all blocks on-screen around your driller.
==============================================================================
7)SCENARIO DRILLER
==============================================================================
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i)Overview)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario Driller is the most unorthodox mode of play in a Mr. Driller game to
date. In this mode you are taken through an animated story following the 6
drillers as they try to resolve the Puzzle Block disaster. During the story
you will participate in many Drilling Activities, which mainly consist of
DriStone Stages that are unique to Scenario Driller, and Driller Races which
are against computer controlled players.
At first you will only be able to select New Game (初めから), but once you
save you will be able to continue from where you left off if you select
funnily enough Continue (続きから). Also, once you complete the first Episode
an option called Free Scenario (フリーシナリオ) will appear. From this option
you can replay any Episodes you have completed.
DriStone Stages are all throughout Scenario Driller, these Stages are focused
far more on the puzzle element of Mr. Driller then the frenzied action
element. Your Air Supply does not get used up as time goes on. Instead,
every time you Drill 1% is deducted from your Air Supply, and if you die 20%
is deducted off your Air Supply. Although you die after you Drill at 0%, if
that last drill completes the stage it still registers as a win.
The objective of the stage is usually to reach a certain depth or to collect
a Special Item. Anyway, DriStone Stages are littered with DriStones, the
cause various effects once selected from the menu that comes up once you
press Start or the △ Button. DriStones that have been used and have effects
that can be used multiple times will be listed in the DriStone Released
Internal Powers (発勁中のドリストン) box, with the remaining number of uses
listed beside it. Here is a list of DriStones:
Red DriStones

Destroy W (デストロイW) - Destroys all White Blocks in a limited range.
Destroy X (デストロイX) - Destroys all X-Blocks in a limited range.
Destroy A (デストロイA) - Destroys all Blocks in a limited range, halves
your current Air Supply in the process.
Destroy V (デストロイV) - Destroys all blocks directly above your driller and
about 10 blocks below your driller.
Destroy H (デストロイH) - Destroys all Blocks on either side of your driller.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i)Walkthrough
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Episode #1: Into Action! (ドリラー出動!)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
* Go to Anna's House (アンナの家).
* Go to the Driller Research Center (ドリラー研究所).
* You will now compete as Susumu against Anna in a Race Stage. You must reach
a depth of 200m before her inside the Block Simulator to win.
* Go to the Block Outbreak Site (ブロック発生現場).
* This is the Tokyo DriStone Stage, the goal is at a depth of 300m.
* Go to Susumu's House (ススムの家).
Episode #2: Anna is a Girl! (アンナは女の子)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
* Go to Sheeta's House (シータの家).
* Go to the Block Outbreak Site (ブロック発生現場).
* This is the New York DriStone Stage, the goal is at a depth of 500m.
* Now Eguri, an Ankoku Driller; will challenge Anna to a Driller Race, you
must beat her down to a depth of 200m.
* Go to the Airport (空港).
Episode #3: A Family Affair (親子鷹)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
* Go to the Camel Farm (ラクダ園).
* Go to the Southern Temple (南の神殿)
* In this DriStone Stage you must search for a fragment of a Key. Here is the
solution to this stage:
Drill down through the 8 layers of Blocks below, now Drill the Red Block
segment holding up all those X and White Blocks and run quickly to the left
and then down under the silver X-Block ledge to get away from the falling
blocks. Now Drill though the next 3 Block segments in your way to collect
the Red DriStone below. Now use Destroy Y and get ready to run right just
as the Red DriStone falls to collect it, as soon as as the Red Block you
will be standing on begins to dissolve, Drill into the Green Block segment
to your right and head quickly to the right so the Blue Block segment
doesn't squish you. Now head up all the way to the left above the column of
X-Blocks. Use Destroy X.
Drill through the two block segments in your way and collect the four Red
DriStones. Use Destroy G and then Destroy B, then head down further. Now
use Destroy W then Destroy X. Now head all the way through the cleared
tunnel. Drill down, collect the Red DriStone and then drop down. Drill the
Yellow Block segment then quickly head climb up in it's place and use
Destroy H. Now Drill Down through the blocks and collect the two Red
DriStones. Now stand in the direct center of the screen (5 block widths
from the left wall) and use Destroy V to split the X-Block segment below.
Now drop down on top of the Yellow Block below, from here use Destroy H.
Now collect the Yellow DriStone below and use it, it's Jump. Now make you
way over to the left and down the long shaft, you will land on a Red
DriStone.
Drill the Blue Block segment below, jump up to the right, use Destroy H and
run quickly to the right to collect the two DriStones, but don't drop down
yet. Use Speed and then stand two block widths from the right edge (so the
gap at the bottom of the screen is directly below Ataru) and use Destroy V,
as soon as you've done that quickly head down before the White Blocks fall
down. Drill through the Yellow Block to get a Red DriStone. Now use Destroy
H, quickly run left, drill down and then shelter to the right from the
falling White Blocks. Now drill through the Yellow Block segment and head
quickly to the right, drill up at the Blue Block segment before it falls
and then jump up. Drill the Red Block segment and collect the Key fragment.
* Go to the Northern Temple (北の神殿).
* This DriStone Stage is the same as the last, you must search for a fragment
of a Key. Here is the solution to this stage:
Drill down through three Block layers, head left, drill into the Green
Block segment, run left and quickly drill down and then head right through
the small gap. Collect the Yellow DriStone. Now use Speed, drill into the
Yellow Block segment, head left so you collect the Yellow DriStone and then
head right through the gap, before what you're standing on falls into the
pit below. Head up to the right, use Jump, drill the Yellow Block segment
and then jump up to the right. Now once the blocks settle, jump up to the
left to get the Red DriStone. Jump down and use Destroy X, now head left in
place of the X-Block and drill down and head left before the Green Block
crushes you. Now head down through the newly cleared tunnel. You will fall
on a Yellow DriStone.
Use Three Way, drill left to hit the Yellow Block and then drop down. Drill
the Yellow Block segment then the Green one and then head up to the left.
Drill the Blue Block segment and then head up to the right, jump up on top
of the Yellow Block segment, drill left to hit the Red Block and then again
to hit the X-Block. Jump up, drill the Yellow Block, drill left to hit the
Green Block and then climb up and fall down the shaft.
Drill down or right to hit the White Block, now drill right to hit the Blue
Block segment, now drill left to hit the Yellow Block segment, climb up to
the right. Drill right to take out the Yellow Block, drill right again to
take out the Red Block segment. As soon as you have done that head right,
then left below the X-Block and then right through the gap, if you don't
beat the X-Block down just drill through it. Head down, drill the Red Block
segment, drop down, collect the Red DriStone and then quickly use Destroy
W. Jump up into the tunnel. Drill the Green Block segment ahead, drill left
to hit the Yellow Block segment, drill into the Red Block segment, quickly
head left and drill up into the Yellow Block segment before it falls. Now
jump up to collect the Key fragment.
* Go to the Block Outbreak Site (ブロック発生現場).
* This is the Egypt DriStone Stage, the goal is at a depth of 500m.
* Go to the Airport (飛行場).
Episode #4: Treasure Hunt (ここほれワンワン)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
* Go to the Circus (サーカス).
* Go to the Block Outbreak Site (ブロック発生現場).
* In this DriStone Stage, you must reach a depth of 700m to be able to
collect the Golden DriStone. Puchi will accompany Susumu in this dig and
will bark if a hidden DriStone is within 1 metre of Susumu. Also, Tony
Kark Horunoski, the Russian Driller; and Lanka Hou, the Chinese Driller;
will recover your Oxygen to 50% once, if you run out. Tony will bring a Air
Capsule down if you run out of air through drilling and Lanka will bring a
First Aid Capsule if you run out of air by getting crushed by a block.
* You must beat Kowasu, an Ankoku Driller; in a Race Stage. The course is
200 metres deep. You must make some X-Blocks fall on the large masses of
X-Blocks which will block your way for the first half of this Race Stage.
* You must then beat Eguri, ano Ankoku Driller; in another Race Stage, it is
200 metres deep as well.
* Now its Keel, the Ankoku Driller Leader's; turn compete against you in a
Race Stage. He is very fast and the course is 300m deep, but he will be
slowed down because he will collect every Air Capsule on the way down.
While you wont, because you understand you only have to collect one if your
getting low. right?
* Go to the Airport (飛行場).
Episode #5: Susumu's Fate... (ススムよ永遠に…)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
* Time for the North Pole DriStone Stage, the goal is at a depth of 1000m.
* After completing that, Dr. Manhole will ask if you are going to stop
his Drill, choose Yes (はい).
* Now for the Final Stage, you drill down as fast as possible to stop Dr.
Manhole's Giant Drill from reaching the earth's core, which is 500m below.
Use the Yellow DriStones that will appear at around the 250m mark, they
will Speed you up enough to reach the Giant Drill's hatch. However, don't
use too many, since the delay from releasing the power of them will slow
you down.
==============================================================================
8)TIME ATTACK DRILLER
==============================================================================
In Time Attack Driller, you race to dig down to the required depth as fast as
possible before your Rest Time runs out. The Rest Time you start with is
determined by the character you choose, here is a table:
Susumu - 35
Anna - 35
Taizou - 30
Ataru - 30
Puchi - 40
Horinger Z - 40
Usagi - 25
However, every time you clear a course, some Bonus Time will be added to your
current Rest Time, to use in the next course. The Courses are arranged like
so, in a diamond:
A
/ \
B C
/ \ / \
D E F
\ / \ /
G H
\ /
I
After completing a course you will be able to choose to proceed down the
diamond to any courses linked with the one you just completed. So for
instance: Once you complete "A" you will be given a choice between "B" and
"C", if you choose "B" and complete it you will be given a choice of "D"
and "E" but not "F", as "F" is not linked to "B". Confused? You won't be
after you play. There are 12 possible Routes to complete Time Attack Driller.
In Time Attack Driller there is no Oxygen Gauge. This is because in this mode
your Driller has Unlimited Air. So there are no Air Capsules as well.
Time Attack has different items to the other modes. Clocks add the amount of
seconds displayed to your Rest Time once collected. Crystals (Blue block with
a white star on it) once collected cause certain Blocks to turn into
Crystals. Turn Blocks (Orange Block with a right angle & 90゜ printed on it)
once collected cause the area on screen to turn 90゜. Flip Blocks (Yellow
block with a curved arrow printed on it) once collected cause the area on
screen to flip upside down. Here is a table of all the courses:
| Depth Level | Width | Best Time | Bonus |
---+-------------+-----------+-----------+-------+
A | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'20"00 | 25 |
B | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'24"00 | 40 |
C | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'19"00 | 40 |
D | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'29"00 | 25 |
E | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'36"00 | 25 |
F | 100 Metres | 9 Blocks | 0'28"00 | 25 |
G | 100 Metres | 13 Blocks | 0'20"00 | 40 |
H | 100 Metres | 13 Blocks | 0'20"00 | 40 |
I | 200 Metres | 13 Blocks | 0'20"00 | 45 |

Input
http://www.mrdriller.net/regist1.html as the url to be translated.
Click the dot next to 和→英 (Japanese to English) and then press the
button to the right, ウェブページ翻訳 (Web Page Translation). And there
you have it! A poorly translated Membership Agreement! Otherwise, just
click on "I Agree" (同意する) at the bottom of the page and sell your
soul to Namco! Mwhahaha! PacMan is actually the devil! Anyway...
4. Finally, the registration page! Ok, here is a translation of the fields
you have to fill and what to fill in them:
* User Name (ユーザ名) - Input up to 4 double-byted Japanese Characters
* Email Address (メールアドレス) - Fill in your email address.
* Birth Date (生年月日) - Input your birthday in yyyymmdd form.
* Gender (性別) - Tick one, Male(男) or Female (女).
* Postcode (郵便番号) - 7 random numbers, unless you're Japanese.
* User Password (希望パスワード) - 4 numbers, input them in both boxes.
Make sure you write down the Password you input, and keep it in a safe
place. Once that's all done click on the button Register (登録する), and
hope for the best, if it worked you'll get a message telling you that you
will be sent a Notification Email. If you can't read Japanese, this
message has "ID" and "24" in its text.
5. You will now be sent a Notification Email to the Email Address you
supplied Namco with. It is from the address "
[email protected]" and
will have "Mr Driller G:お知らせ" (Notification) as the topic title. Now
there are two important things in this email. One is the Membership ID No.
at the start of the email, it's in quotation marks and will look something
like "ABC01234"; write this code down. The second most important thing is
the Bookmark Link, cut out the long link and paste it into your Internet
Browser and then add it to your Bookmarks.
You can log on to Driller Net, one of two ways:
* Go to www.mrdriller.net, input your Membership ID No. into the top field
and your Password into the bottom field and then click on "OK!".
* Use the Bookmark Link you got in your Notification Email, input your
Password into the only field and then click on "OK".
Also, to go back from any page in Driller Net, click on the Back (もどる)
button at the bottom of the page.

ii)Driller Ranking
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Driller Ranking is a global (supposed to be only Japanese, but I won't tell
if you won't) ranking of the best scores/times achieved in the Mission
Driller, Time Attack Driller and Bonus Driller modes of Mr. Driller Great.
To participate, all you have to do is play Mission Driller, Time Attack
Driller or Bonus Driller and achieve a good enough score/time/depth to
"RANK-IN", in which you will have to input your initials. Your
score/time/depth will then be added to the Records. Here is how to add your
scores/times to the Driller Ranking:
1. Start up Mr Driller Great and then choose Net Driller (ネットドリラー) and
then Driller Ranking (ドリラーランキング).
2. This is set up much like the Records section, except instead of the
records being set up in tables. They are shown one by one. Use L or R to
scroll between them. Anyway, while displaying each record there is a pink
box with 12 characters of Hiragana inside it. That is your password, so
pick any records you think are worthy of your name and write down their
passwords. For Bonus Driller, the password for the depth you reached is
shown after you finish, it is 7 hiragana characters long.
3. Log on to www.mrdriller.net, select Driller Ranking (ドリラーランキング)
and then click on Password Entry (パスワード登録!).
4. The first field on this screen is where you input your 12 or 7 character
Password, so do so. The second field is where you can input an
optional comment of up to 16 Japanese Characters, I think you can write it
in English if you wish! Then click "OK". You will be taken to a screen
where Puchi will tell you if your Record was added or not!.
To view the Driller Ranking click on Look at Ranking (ランキングを見る!).
It is set up much like the Records and Driller Ranking sections of Mr Driller
Great. Once you click on Mission Driller (ミッションドリラー) or Time Attack
Driller (タイムアタックドリラー) you will see two pull-down menu's. The top
one is Stage (ステージ) for Mission Driller and Route (ルート) for Time Attack
Driller, this is where you can choose the stage/route you want to look at
the records for. The bottom one is Character (キャラクター) where you can
choose what character you want to look at the records for. If you want to see
the best records overall, keep it on (総合). Once you have finished your
selections click Look (見る) to view the top 100 records in groups of 10.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ii)Driller Comp
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Driller Competition lets you participate in an online Mr. Driller Great
competition with computer and human controlled opponents. To play first log
on to Driller Net and select Driller Comp (ドリラーコンペ). Here you will be
greeted with the following menu:
遊びかた - Contains Info on Play Requirements (プレイに必要なもの) and
How to Play Competition Flow (ンペの流れ)
エントリー - Submit a Request to take part in a competition, select
Entry Yes (はい) and you will be emailed the Comp Password.
結果を申請 - Input the Password of your best result from competing
Submit Results in a competition.
ステータス - See your Driller Rank Level, Current Dori (現在の所有ドリ)
Status and Accumulated Dori (獲得総ドリ).
ドリショップ - Purchase exclusive Mr. Driller Wallpapers with Dori
DriShop you have won in Competitions.
賞金ランキング - View the top 100 Competition Drillers and your current
Prize Ranking position in the Ranking. The orange number is your rank.
The Driller Competition mode of "Mr. Driller Great" flows in the following
way. This continues from after you have logged on to www.mrdriller.net, and
have navigated to the Driller Comp Menu.
1. Click on Entry (エントリー) and then Yes (はい).
2. You will now be sent a "Competition Start" email to the Email Address you
supplied Namco with. It will come from the address "
[email protected]"
and will have "Mr Driller G:コンペ開始" (Competition Start) as the topic
title. This email contains a lot of info so here is a breakdown of the
important info:
開始日時 - Beginning Date & Time
〆切日時 - Deadline Date & Time
パスワード - Password
コンペ参加者 - Competition Participants
賞金 - Prizes
The most important thing is the Password, it is 8 characters of Hiragana
that are directly below the word Password (パスワード). The second most
important thing is probably the Deadline Date & Time. Remember it's in
24 Hour Japanese Time (GMT +09:00).
3. Now write down the Password. Start up Mr Driller Great and then choose
Net Driller (ネットドリラー) and then Driller Comp (ドリラーコンペ).
4. Input the Password and you will be taken to a screen displaying the rules
of the Competition. Sorry, no help here. Just continue on and try your
best. Once you die or you finish the Level, you will be taken to a results
screen, here in a pink box you will be given a Password consisting of
14 characters of Hiragana.
5. Log on to www.mrdriller.net, and select Driller Comp (ドリラーコンペ).
6. Click on Submit Results (結果を申請).
7. Fill the Password into the only field and then click "OK".
8. The message you get after submitting the password will tell you to wait
for the processing of the data, and to wait for an email. A little after
the Competition's deadline (usually about an hour). You will receive an
email from "
[email protected]" with "Mr Driller G:結果発表" (Results
Announcement) as the topic title. This email will tell you if you have won
or not, and how much Dori you have won.
Dori can be used to buy exclusive Mr. Driller Great Wallpapers from the
DriShop. The price in Dori is written below the thumbnail of the wallpaper.
To purchase a wallpaper click on its thumbnail, you will now be taken to a
screen where you can choose the resolution you want (800x600, 832x624 or
1024x768). After you choose the resolution, you will be taken to a screen
where it will ask you "do you want to purchase it?" and it will display
your Current Dori (現在の所有ドリ). Click on Purchase (購入する).
To download the wallpaper click on the thumbnail, wait for the wallpaper
to fully download and then right click on it and select either "Set as
Background" to load it immediately, or "Save Picture As" to save it for a
rainy day. Anyway, for convenience sake, here is the price list of all the
wallpapers:

10)SECRETS
==============================================================================
Lives Select
When selecting your character in Mission Driller mode, hold L1, L2, R1, R2
and Select down and then push the ○ Button. You will be given a choice to
select to start with 3-9 lives!
Unlock Polar Stage
Clear the India, America & Egypt Stages in Mission Driller, to unlock
the very hard Polar Stage.
Unlock Bonus Driller
Clear Scenario Driller, and then while Free Scenario (フリーシナリオ) is
hi-lighted hold L1, L2, R1, R2 down and then push the ○ Button. You will be
taken to Bonus Driller (おまけドリラー). In Bonus Driller you play as Ataru

Play as Usagi
Clear the North Pole Stage in Mission Driller, to make the untouchable
Usagi playable in all modes.
Play as the Ankoku Drillers
Clear Scenario Driller. Now when selecting characters in a 2 Player mode,
the 2nd player can play as one of the three Ankoku Drillers. Simply hold L1,
L2, R1, R2 down while selecting a character. If you choose Susumu this way
you will play as Keel, he has extremely fast movement speed and very fast
air consumption. If you choose Anna this way you will play as Eguri, she has
fairly slow movement speed, average air consumption and her drill (or top in
her case) has a range of 2 blocks. If you choose Taizou this way you will
play as Kowasu, he has slow movement speed, quite fast air consumption and
has permanent Three Way.
