HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO WORLD OF GAMING!!!! How´s your doing? (THX threetimes!)
Here´s Pantibonico, the beyond-awesome videogame detective,with the
so expected" 99.9 % Reliability-Equipment Guide for KOUDELKA
(PAL Version).
Well, this is my first time doing something like this,
so the only experience I´ve got about guides is reading them, so please,
don´t be so cruel at me for the "bad-design" of this guide
( I know it looks like a novice document, but in the end,
I put my efforts and heart while writing it despite the few free time
I usually have...)
Why doing this? Well, I think is the same reason as a lot of other
guide makers: Just because It´s horrible to see how a game you really like
and love, lacks on info about something. In this case,
some nice guides about Koudelka have been written, giving
a lot of useful info and details, but they were somehow
poor when it comes to the "equipment info"
(weapons, armors and accesories, overall).
As a videogame detective, feeling the call of duty,
I had to do it, I had to fill that little gap others had left behind.
And trust me, this is some serious loss of info we´re talking about,
as in this game there is a huge variety of weapons and armor, so that means
some hard work by my side.
Anyway, I´ve always wanted to write down a book so, Why not now? ;)
Besides, I´ve always admired those people who
spend their daily lives and free time trying to document each little
aspect of a game, no matter what, so It´s OK with me to apport
my part of the cake...
2. SOME BASICS
--------------------
Before we start with the show, I´d like to put clear
some matters I think they should be known before people
start searching info about their weapon of choice. I mean,
some aspects I took into consideration while making this guide,
and the casual reader should know (but Hey, if you want to skip
this section, I won´t shoot you down...
"Who cares? I only wanna know where that shotgun is"... LOL!!!)
-First of all, I wrote this guide while focusing only in WEAPONS,
ARMORS and ACCESORIES. So, If you came here while looking for some antidotes,
I think this is not your guide, my friend (neither is a pharmacy LOL).
You Know, I don´t really care about usable items (potions, antidotes,
bullets, etc...) as they are everywhere in the game, so easy to find
and get they don´t need any special attention in this guide. Besides,
I don´t remember a single time I ran out of bullets, potions or telis
(listel in NTSC). A lot of monsters drop this kind of items, so it would
be a waste of time to track them down all. (ACTUALLY, the only items that
really caught my eye are idols and magic scrolls, which are included
at the end of the list, as most players seem interested in these unusual
objects)
-Almost ALL the weapons in this game are BREAKABLE (yes, folks...).
So better don´t fall in love with your sword very often, or you´ll get
depressed soon LOL.
This is the sad reality a lot of players complain about in this game,
but I find it really enjoyable. Who wants a sword forever? Ah come on.
This way, it´s more real...
-It seems that the breaking of a weapon depends on the STR
of the character who´s handling it, and the stronger the character,
the sonner it breaks (THX to threetimes for pointing this out).
Come to think about it, it´s pretty logical, I guess... But fear not,
as not all of them break apart. For example, firearms like guns or
shotguns never break, but (guess what?) they spend ammunition to attack,
and no ammunition means end of the party, my friend... For the rest of
weapons, you better consider them breakable despite not looking like they´re
gonna break or you might get a surprise if you don´t.( I myself found out
that Roger´s Cane is breakable, and the legend says it wasn´t).
-Another famous weapon considered for being unbreakeable
is the infamous Sacnoth Sword. After a lot of trying, finally manage to
break it myself (wonder why I´m the only one who breaks everything
I find LOL)
-About the modifiers from weapons and equipment, let´s say it
might be a bit confusing at first, but I think I understand its way
of working. You see, each single weapon or armor in the game modify your
attributes. The modified attributes depend on the item ( So, A sword might
modify your STR and DEX while an AXE might change your STR or AGI, for
example),but they always stick to the same attributes.
Now the hard part: In this game, it tries to represent there aren´t
two single weapons or armors that are alike, despite being
the same armor or sword, for example.
So, if you have two B.Axe, they may have different modifiers
and elemental affinity, despite being the same kind of axe
As an example, let´s explain the modifiers mechanics step by step
for a fictional weapon.(I´m trying my best at explaining this)
Well, let´s say this weapon will have a fixed modifier valour.
That means that this weapon (and ALL the weapons of its kind)
ALWAYS has this INITIAL valour.
For example:
Fixed Valour: STR+21/DEX+7/AGI+10/INT-4.
Then, in order to make some distinction between weapons
of the same type, a random valour is added over this fixed valour.
So far we have:
Fixed Valour: STR+21/DEX+7/AGI+10/INT-4.
Random Valour: STR+3/DEX+4/AGI-3/INT+2
-------------------------------------------
Total Valour: STR+24/DEX+11/AGI+7/INT-2
And that Total Valour is the one we see AS PLAYERS,
when equipping the weapon.
Of course We don´t really know that random or fixed valour,
(and we don´t really care either, right? :P),but
the Total valour is what really matters.
Later, If we were to find another weapon exactly the same
as the example given, the random variance may be different, and thus,
the REAL modifier would be different too in the end. For example:
Fixed valour:(same as before, as it´s the same kind of weapon)
STR+21/DEX+7/AGI+10/INT-4
Random Valour: STR-5/ DEX+1/AGI-2/ INT-1
--------------------------------------------
Total Valour: STR+16/DEX+8/AGI+8/INT-5
In the end, the two "identical" weapons are different in attributes.
So this is it.The random Valour seems to have a max range
between -6/+6 aproximately. The same for armors and accesories.
And I don´t think the elemental affinity has something to do with
the final valour.
You know, I´ve seen a HUGE amount of weapons and items during my playthrough,
and never found a relation between element and final valour.
Everything´s random in the end.
-Another of my conclusions is the attribute LUC.
I still can´t say if it´s really useful or what.
Some people say not to pay attention to this.
In my experience, I almost agree with them. I managed to reach LUC 99 in all
my characters, and yet, I had difficulties in finding item drops from
the enemy (same as if you had LUCK 0 I guess).
The only thing I dare to say about LUC is that it seems to affect
the enemy rate encounter, as sometimes it takes even
1 minute walking by to find some battle (but pretty rare I guess...).
I think that the odds for finding items or enemies change each time
you load your savefile, but that´s just a hunch of mine (one of many LOL).
-There are some weapons considered as magical weapons.
You´ll know it because they usually raise your INT a lot, but not STR.
Those weapons are recommended for your magic casters characters in your game
(Koudelka and James in my case). The damage they do are based on your INT,
not in your STR (as most of weapons), when attacking.
(THX to Jiyuu Falcon for this). Some of them are: Cat Eye, Rod, Mace,
St Daniel Cross, Evil Horn, etc...
-I´m not explaining here how to get the time-based items,
as it´s been very well described in other guides (I myself followed
threetimes´ guide where it is very well explained how to get them).
- Almost all weapons have elemental affinity, except for a few ones
like the Rods or Cat eyes, that are ALWAYS neutral, no matter how many you get.
As for armors and accesories, it seems that a lot people don´t know they have
special characteristics, as well as weak points. So for example, an armor may
absorb Fire (HP restored when you´re attacked with fire), but
receive extra damage when you are attacked by water.
To see this characteristics, just enter the items or equip menu
and press right on your gamepad.
Another small window shall appears, telling you the special powers of that
armor and accesory, or the mastery level of certain weapon.
It seems pretty easy, but I took my time just to discover that.
(same goes for fleeing from battle.
I had to look in the Internet how to do it. LOL!)
-Finally, before we reach to the real thing, in case there
are still people who want to explore Nemeton Monastery much deeper than
I´ve already done (almost one year of wandering around in that place LOL),
I´ll include a couple of tips so the investigation may be easier.
This is the procedure I followed while raiding enemies drops to
make this "almost" perfect guide:
* ALL monsters drop something, either weapons or potions,
but something in the end. And besides, they seem to be perfectly
bonded to the same kind of item during the entire game. That way,
the cockroaches will drop pieces of bread for the rest of their lives,
while the impaled bodies are bonded to POLEARMS, and so on...
The trick is to find out which kind of items a monster is bonded to.
And then, as the game progresses, the enemy will change its colour
at some point, and the dropped item will be an upgraded version
of the previous one.
A perfect example for that is the flying sphere: this WEIRD monster
is bonded to Cloth armors.
So in DISK1, you´ll find BLUE flying spheres that drop RAGS
(the weakest armor in the game), in DISK2 they are GREEN, and drop
FROCK ARMOR (upgraded version of RAGS).
Lastly, in DISK3 it turns PURPLE and drops ROBE ARMOR (the best armor for
mages in my opinion, and it´s the advanced version of the FROCK).
Most of the weapons and armors dropped by enemies work that way.
This is exactly the theory that allowed me to guess where the
infamous GIRDLE SWORD was, as I only had to follow zombie dogs´
trail from DISK2 to DISK4.
* Another basic theory: In ALMOST ALL the rooms
(I found a few of them where this theory doesn´t seem to work), there are
FOUR groups of enemies that attack you.
This helps a lot, as you only need to find those four different groups
to know the monsters at that place, and then you might move to the next one.
The rooms where I only managed to find three groups instead of four
were the Secret Library at Patrick´s Quarters, and the passage
to Charlotte´s Dining room. Same goes for the graveyard,
as there only seems to be zombies, skeletons and ravens ALL THE TIME...
I always have the feeling I left something behind in those areas :(,
but I spent DAYS just exploring their monsters to not success.
If anyone´s interested, here are the rooms with apparently
less than 4 groups only:
-Secret Library (Conversation about the Emigre with Roger)
-Entrance to Charlotte´s Dining Room (small room before Charlotte´s)
-Entire Graveyard (St Daniel´s grave, Charlotte´s grave,
path to Triangular Hall)
-Stable (beginning of the game: only cockroaches here...Blegh)
-Well area (Housekeeper´s)
And here´s the rooms I NEVER got attacked, not even once:
-The room you need to enter a musical password from the
music box.
-The Puzzle-Tiles Room.
-Charlotte´s Dining Room.
If anyone gets attacked sometime at those locations, please
report at once somehow...
And as I said before, the probabilities of finding certain
groups of enemies change , and it seems to depend on reloading your
savegame, except for some monster which always seem to be
HARD TO CATCH no matter what (Golden Tamakos at DISK4 comes to mind).
And now, THE LIST. In the locations given, there are some clues in brackets
related to the mentioned location, so it´ll be easier to find.
Some clues You´ll understand as you progress in the game.
By the way, the names of locations and enemies were extracted from
the Prima guide, except some of them that were invented by myself so I could
work better in this guide. My apologies in advance for that...

*********14. REALLY USEFUL USABLES [P.12]*********
Well. What can I say? As I had some spare time and nothing to do
(biggest lie ever LOL...), I decided to include a couple of usable items,
which may help the casual player inside Nemeton.
I considered they should be mentioned in the end, in this guide,
as a lot of players seem to be interested.
Those are the status idols and the Magic Scrolls.

*************15. THANKS & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ***************************
Well. This is it. The almost-Ultimate list for your equipment needs.
Now you can entirely gain access to ALL the equipment in this game.
Choose the item you like the most.
You better know I didn´t make this guide on my own, as I too needed some help
from others (extra info, comparing ideas and theories, asking A LOT,
pestering others, etc...), so I think those "others" people should be
mentioned as well, so you know they exist as well as this
amazing guide (I hope it is :P). I´d like to give thanks to:
- All the people at Gamefaqs Board, who I know they´ve been following my
investigation inside the monastery walls very closely, despite most of them
kept silence (LOL!).
-Special thanks to:
- threetimes (for her guide and guidance through the game, apporting
vital info in the most crucial moments, especially when looking for the
so-well-hidden Shotgun 2, as well as a hidden savepoint near the end of the
game, so I could save my Girdle Sword forever.
Thanks also for pointing that the shotgun 2 is a missable item and the Black
cat at the Church roof drops the Pendant :), as well as for helping me to post
this guide at GAMEFAQS, as I didn´t know it was such a laborious process...
- MikoNoNyte (for following my investigation, and having a wide
knowledge of the game. In fact, she is the one who really found the Hidden
Savepoint, and later reported to threetimes)
- Jiyuu Falcon (for pointing that magical weapons are better for
mages rather than fighters)
- AWSLabel424 (who had special interest in my progress and
theories, and helped me a lot with the info about Bessy´s Ring,
Odgen´s Shirt, Odgen´s Axe, and several kind of axes.
Besides, he/she was able to come up with conclusions similar to mine ;)
- ShadowHeartsWikia (website), for proving that the Girdle Sword
exists, as well as the Shotgun 2 and that most weapons are breakable
(even the Sacnoth, supposed to be never-ending.I myself managed to break it^^)
- Koudelka´s Prima Guide, from where I extracted info about the
translations in the items names just by looking at the pictures.
- Youtube, for several walkthroughs from some players (THX to them too)
- MMalekzandi´s guide (thanks to his/her guide, the finding of the
Shotgun 2 was possible)
I think that´s all (Hope I don´t forget anyone or ELSE...).
*********16. PERSONAL INFO (Who cares anyway?... LOL)*****************
Ok, I´ll talk a few about myself, (but only a bit, RIGHT?)...
My name is Sergio and I´m from Europe (Spain). Born in 1981
(too old for videogames???), I soon started to play videogames on the NES
( my very first game was Super Mario Bros) when I was 8.
From that moment, I´ve been attached to the world of videogames, and played a
lot of them all of my life. Can´t really tell How many games I´ve played in the
past...
</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
Currently, I´m an electronics student hoping to stop from being unemployed and
gettin a job (It´s been 2 years now since the last one sigh...)
At the moment of making this guide, I am in the final stages of my
electronics grade, which makes it difficult to get time enough to keep
on getting info from Koudelka or other games. Recently, about 4 moths or so,
I´ve claimed myself as a videogame detective (LOL!),
as a new way of personal amusement on my leisure time (very few by the way).
So I offer my help to others in solving unsolved mysteries from classic games
(as I´m not interested in next-gen games, because I can´t afford to buy them,
and because I´m stuck to the oldies).
Who knows How many secrets have been left behind?
If you ever need help with a game (within my reach of course),
just don´t hesitate to send me an e@mail and I´ll answer as soon as possible
whether I accept the errand or not. I´m always ready for a new challenge ;).
And I REALLY enjoy playing games while sharing info with other players, rather
than playing by myself,all ALONE...
But plz, be serious about this, as I sure am, so don´t email me just because
you are boring or are willing to joke.
I just want to serve the community of videogames.
Ain´t nothing wrong with that, in my opinion...
You can also email me if you think there´s something wrong in the guide
(as probably is LOL!!!. This is a 99.9% RELIABILITY GUIDE, remember that),
or add some extra info (with full credit of course),
or if a location isn´t well described, or whatever...
