3. Notes
I've been in love with this game and it's about time someone did an
updated Walkthrough to it. Since the advent of "Shadow Hearts", many
people have been curious about this game, the creation of Hiroki Kikuta
(of Secret of Mana music fame). A manga was also released but none of
the 3 volumes were translated.
1. Beginner's Guide to setting out
Play it really late at night for the best effect.
"What should be feared most? The Darkness? Or the unseen depths of the
human soul? 31st October, 1898. The principality of Wales, Great Britain.
A young girl, Koudelka, Iasant, has been summoned to Nemeton Abbey, an
ancient fortress built nearly a milennium ago to ward off the forces f
evil. What awaits her at this intersection where life and death, and the
sacred and the profane are intertwined?"
"On the same day, for different motives, a trio of visitors set foot in
Nemeton Abbey. Who are these individuals, and what prospects await them?
As the tale unfolds, you will bear witness to their fate."
After the CG introduction, the game will take you to the intro screen.
You can choose to start, continue or fiddle with the settings. There are
only two settings, you can turn the dual shock on or off, or change the
sound to mono or stereo. Rivetting eh?
SUB-SCREEN
The subscreen is very pretty. There are eight commands. You can see your
party on the left. The bottom box shows the time you have spent playing
the game.
The first option, HEAL, allows you to select a character to heal, but the
caster will be random. Using this option will allow you to level up the heal
spell of all your characters without having to cast it in battle.
Abilities are limited to the caster's total MP (magic points).
STATUS shows your various abilities. You can swap between them using the d-
pad, or change characters with the l/r buttons. You can choose which levels
to raise and keep an eye on general stats, as well as spell levels. You
can raise weapon levels to max. level 3 and spells, possibly higher (hears
general sigh of relief).
EQUIP allows you to, well, Equip your characters with armour and weapons.
Weapons will eventually break, so choose types of weapon for types of
character. For example, let Koudelka use knives, James use fists, blunt
weapons or guns and Edward, fists, swords and axes. But it's up to you.
You'll have to fight to keep stocks in, so train carefully.
ITEMS
Here there are different types of item lists, e.g. accessory, tool. You
can hear details about the items. Keep everything that you find except
maybe armour; some items, like letters, will be available in the READ
menu and they will give you hints about the game.
MAP
Added feature in case you get lost. You can make one using the printing
press and a stone tablet - of course, it's hard to read but I think it
shows an overhead view and you can just about work it out.
FORMATION:
Here each character is represented by a chess piece. If an enemy breaks
through your formation, you won't be able to reach him/her or resurrect
them, so always keep a tight formation with more than 1 character in front.
The other options are READ and SETTINGS.
SAVE HINTS
You have to fight for Save Points, since there is no option.
But you can also save in any room using a button when you see the "S"
mark. There's a save trick which I never use, basically if you want to
defeat the bosses like Gargoyle and Elaine easily, you have to save at
a certain time. The trick doesn't really affect the outcome of the game,
but you have to kill Gargoyle before the 1:11:11 time to get his claw.
Also, you must only have 10, 21, 32 or 43 items in your inventory. Daft.
You can save at a fountain or in a room.
This trick helps if you want to defeat the Gargoyle and get the indestruct-
ible Sacnoth sword to use against Elaine.
2. Walkthrough
Some more CG and the game will start. You'll meet a young man in the
first room, Edward Plunkett (based on a historical figure, a Baron of
the same name). Edward is voiced by Michael Bradbury and Koudelka is
voiced by Viviana Bateman. This was one of the first games to have voices
with animated scenes, so it sounded wonderful at the time. It still does
- get those quotes, like, "Do you really think there are ANGELS here
on EARTH?"
..anyway. You will fight a big monster, a werewolf. Shoot at it.
Then Edward will join you and keep an eye on the ground for anything
that looks like an item. Bright red shapes are usually potions or ammo.
Go out and down into a small area next to stairs, you won't be able
to choose at this point. If you want you can climb into the upstairs
room to get a bread item and some bits from the enemies, the clown-types
drop knives which you can use to fight with. Cockroaches drop many
good items, like universal Pistol Rounds.
From here you can choose to go downstairs in the next room or head past
the painting. You can look at the painting and there will be a random
element Dirk behind it, if you're unlucky it will be a Mystic (MP drain)
weapon, if you're lucky it will be a fire, air or even Vital (HP drain)
item. Head downstairs and you'll find Bessie and Ogden, the cranky pair,
and then go down the corridor some more. There you'll have a scene and
there will be some rooms where you can get items (boiler room), around
here is a room where you can get a Panacea item but I can't remember
how to get to it, dammit! You'll finally enter an overgrown garden-type
room and Koudelka will say "something's not right", which means a boss.
When you are a few levels higher, you can face the boss.
EVIL PLANT: 1130 HP
Use magic and a good weapon on it. If you kill it, you will get
Geyser spell and the Icon's Necklace.
~JAMES O'FLAHERTY~
Hooray! Now James will wake up. He's a gentle soul and the three of them
get on, in their own way. Work on everyone's VIT. Make sure their HP
is always climbing. Otherwise, James is good STR, Koudelka PIE, and
James is good at everything.
Now you can climb back up the stairs and head past the painting and go
outside to fight armors, because they drop swords and armor. Then go
into the long corridor and you'll get attacked. At the end you'll
face a boss which casts spells, and the colour of the gems show which
element they are, so use spells of the opposite element or attacks. If
you win, you'll get a few goodies.
~THE DUNGEONS~
Around here you will find green Putti (cherub-type monsters) which
drop Panacea. Collect as much of it as possible, you'll need it.
You'll run into a ghost of a little girl called Charlotte. There are
womens' torsos here which drop rings. If you're lucky they'll be J-
Rings, which are very powerful accessories. There's a haunted room in
the corridor. You can head through its wall and find a red chamber
which has a wardrobe in it. Koudelka will start channeling spirits.
When you open the wardrobe, you get attacked by the rotten bride (in a
manner of speaking!). She's not too hard. Mummy-types hate water.
MYRA: 1220 HP
If you win, you'll get the Megalith (Earth) spell.
There will be a ladder. Use it at the end of the corridor. You can get
down to the lower floor where there is a door, check the body at the
end of the corridor first to get a few items. Then go into the priests'
quarters and there will be a big stained glass window. You examine it and
there is a boss fight with the reflections of the three main characters.
If you defeat them you get Icon's Earring, Revive spell and some other
items. Then there will be another scene and you will end up falling
through the floor of the next room.
~CD 2~
~GROSSNESS~
Check all over for items (bodies, bodies). You'll be waiting to meet
Charlotte again. You'll have to fight her guardian, a Cavalier-type
ghost. He is quite tough, but if you win, you will get a Rifle. If you
level up with this item, you will end up being able to fire about 3 rounds
per turn.
Koudelka will drop into a torture room. Search it and go into the next area
where you will find two mummified children, Vigna and Valna. You won't be
able to get the Green Key until you find their dolls, if you try and
take it now they'll attack, but you can use the Retreat command. Go into
the underground tunnel. You'll eventually face a boss around these caves,
a wierd monk-type character which you can only kill with either physical
attacks or the Vital weapon, it's hard to say. If you win, you get Icon's
Earring.
MAD FRIAR: 3030 HP
Now you can save. Then go through the big green doors and then into
a storeroom filled with loot/treasure, like paintings. There will be a
scene. After it, search around, you can take the bowgun for Koudelka (the
zombies drop ammo). The left door is open.
This room is really useful because the three-headed gunmen drop Axes.
I think they might only be Mystic Axes though. Examine the far wall and
then go over the squeaky bit and climb the stairs. Check everything. You
will eventually get to a big room ("Something's not right..."). The
boss is a big plant.
DARK YANG: 3000 HP
Actually, you should defeat it asap because it's really tough and it'll
give your characters hundreds of levels! Use fire spells, revive items
like Roman Nuts and Whisky, fists/weapons or guns. When it's dead you will
be able to save and you will recieve the Evil Horn, a spear-type weapon.
The water will have dissolved the plaster in the back room and you'll be
able to look behind it.
~ST. DANIEL'S ARM: THE MYSTERY BEGINS~
As you go into the next area, a chandelier falls on the party and you
should pick up the arm which is lying next to it. Go upstairs and there
will be a boss up there, a man with a pistol. You have to take out the
stuff in front of him first. If you win, you will get a brown glass part
and the Red Key to Ogden and Bessie's quarters! The immigrant will collapse
and there will be a scene.
THIEF: 2111 HP
Inspect his body for a DA Pistol and ammo. (Now who's the thief, eh?)
Go back to Ogden and Bessie's quarters. You'll find various things
including Valna's doll. But most importantly, you need to check the area
for a cutscene involving Ogden's ship, "The Esperanza", which went down
in the Thames. After you get it, you can go back to the storage room and
find a small room where there is a Music Box and some clues written on
the side of a box. Then go up the stairs to where you fought the
immigrant and through the far door.
Inside here there is a puzzle floor, but provided you looked at both
clues (on the wall at the top of the stairs and the box item), you will
automatically remember.
~THE LIBRARY~
There is another glass part here. You'll also find a locked cabinet.
Head downstairs past the bricked-up wall and you'll see a clock. There is a
door further on. Wait until you see a cutscene with Koudelka in the
printing room (my favourite FMV!) and then try out the press which is
on the wall nearest to you, NOT the pair that are immediately visible
(it's hard to spot). You should get a map and the wall will collapse.
There is a boss in the save room. To get to him, put the three statues in
the door and then open it. The boss is really easy if you have VIT and
good fire spells.
CHIMERA: 3000 HP
If you win, you will get the Icon's Crown. Then there is a scene. Ignore
the plant which is growing in the book case, it's not very useful anyway.
You will be able to enter the collapsed wall. There will be a passage
leading to the church. Take all the glass parts and put them in the window.
Use the Relief Piece just above the Clock in the Library and then a
door will open behind the tapestry. Here you will have to tread on some
tiles in the same order as the Music Box sequence -

~ROGER BACON~
There will be a click and you can go into a room with a big coffin. Here
you will see another scene and then take the Green Glass piece to the
window. By now you should be able to open the locked cabinet! Don't forget!
Completing the window sequence will unlock the far door. There will be
a scene in which Fr. Flaherty tells you it's now All Saints' Day and they
get separated. If you encounter the Gargoyle now, just run away. Really,
there is no point in trying to kill it. The only way to do so is use
the Gargoyle Killer sword or about 4 Earth scrolls, but you won't be the
right levels at this point anyway, so don't try.
~CD 3~
~THE GROUNDS~
Ah, fresh air at last! Koudelka will be by herself, but if you raised her
VIT and MP stats, she will kick ass. Also, some of her spells will level
up at this point. There are a pair of naked statues. Put the Icon's Earring
on them. Then put the Icon's Necklace on the other one. Take another turn
and you will find a waterfall in front of a door. Explore down the right
side of this area and you should find a figure holding a sword. There is
also a mother and child statue, so put the Icon's Crown on it. Now the
water has been drained out of the way of the door. Go back to it.
*Make sure that you find the PENDANT which was lying by the fountain.
It looks like an ordinary pendant, but give it to Koudelka and don't
take it off if you want a "good" game ending. Yes, it's THE pendant.
Inside is a horrible guilottine (a guilottine in a monastery?). Explore
around it and you should get a scene. When it's over, don't forget to pick
up the RD Rifle and the Blue Key. Then go down below the guilottine
through a hole in the floor and inspect behind the rack; you will get a
Pocket of Blood. Go to the doors to get another scene with Edward and
James (I love this disk). Run through the underground corridor and you
will eventually come into a lovely room. The only problem is, it's
guarded by a boss, probably a Wendigo, and he hates TORNADO spells. If
you win, you will get a Shotgun (Ooh yeah)!
WENDIGO(?): 5500 HP
Again, if you have VIT and spells, no problem. When it's over, go through
the open door and you will see a lady stuck in the wall. Use the Pocket
of Blood to find Patrick's Creature. It gives you hints about the game.
- "The grave... St Daniel's grave... grave of the girl..."
This refers to the graveyard which lies just ahead. Both Charlotte and
St. Daniel are buried there.
- "If you have the research diary... The Emigre File... Roger..."
He means, take the research diary and the Emigre Documents to Roger
Bacon if you get stuck.
- "If you go... fourth floor... hidden sacred..."
He must mean Elaine, the final boss.
- "Vigna and Valna... just want their dolls..."
That's pretty obvious.
- "If you want acid... get empty bottle... Patrick's laboratory..."
You won't be able to pick up this item yet.
- "Daniel's arm... holy strength... "
Not sure what he means. You can't use the item in battle.
- "Patrick... how could you do this to me ?"
Doesn't bear thinking about.
- "That woman...wrote many letters for children... but never
delivered..."
He means that Charlotte's mother, Sophia D'Lota, wrote a lot of letters
to her children which were never delievered.
- "Pipe organ... Move... Go below..."
You can't do this part yet.
- "They can be seen only in the dark... hidden doors... hidden books..."
There's a secret library, but you have to turn the light off first.
Use the bust switch in Patrick's Quarters (easy).
- "Soon...you will meet them soon..."
He means that Koudelka will be reunited with James and Edward soon.
- "Must stop... that Star Charlotte leaves behind... or the Flare..."
If you kill Charlotte without giving her the letters, you won't get
a Flare Brooch.
- "Where is the pendant you dropped ?"
He's reminding Koudelka to keep the important Pendant.
- "If you sound the disk... the last of Patrick's experiment..."
If you play the disk, you get Patrick's Research Notes.
- "The pair of dolls... the woman turns her back to him..."
I'm not sure what this means.
Go ahead and you'll emerge in a graveyard. There will be a brilliant
scene with Roger Bacon and he will open the gates for you. They will
lead back to the library, but first inspect the big grave of Daniel
and you might find a weapon behind it, Daniel's Cross. Then go to the
library and find the others. There will be a scene and you should
head to Charlotte's room which is next to Vigna and Valna. Give their
dolls back and you will be able to pick up the Green Key.
In Charlotte's cell you will have to fight some haunted furniture.
After that you will meet Charlotte. Give her the letters, otherwise
you'll have to "kill" her. Now you can use the door to her cell
and open the way to Patrick's Quarters with the Blue Key.
~PATRICK'S QUARTERS~
Beautiful golden furnishings! Climb the boxes and move the bust on
the shelf above which will open the door to the Secret Library
where Roger Bacon is studying. The door on the left of the landing
leads to a gramophone where you can play the disk and recieve
Patrick's Research Notes. Leave it playing and go into the next
room and you will face a horrible boss thing, it is HORRIBLE.
Defeat it with spells and powerful weapons.
As you leave the room again you will have another scene in front of
Elaine's portrait. Then explore some more and you'll probably get
stuck unless you go and see Roger Bacon again.
There is a door on the other side of Patrick's staircase. Through
here you'll find his laboratory and a container to put the acid in.
You'll notice that the bookcase reads "Hestia", goddess of the hearth.
It means you should check the fireplaces around here. There is a
scale, so take the reading. Using the research notes, climb down the
fireplace in the same room and adjust the counterweight until
both scales make Patrick's weight as stated in the notes (do a
little math here).
The door will open, so go back to see Roger Bacon. You'll have to get
acid from the machine which is in the Valna/Vigna area (groan). You have
to go and fill it up. Anyway, you can now open the outdoor entrance to
the Vestry via Patrick's Quarters (door is between the statues).
~THE VESTRY~
At this point you will have access to the entire monastery. While you
can find scrolls in the Vestry from big heads with tentacles coming
out of the bottom, you should also look for normal enemies in the
church where th Gargoyle is because they will reward you well; just
don't go right to the end of the church where the plant lives.
You must turn around each of the dolls so that they face the altar.
Inwards, that is. Go through the new door and climb the Altar (this is
hard) and you should be able to use the tinder box to get Lifedrinker
Sword. Explore and you'll have to fight for another save point in the
Chapel. It's a fallen angel-type boss who changes his immunity to
attacks and spells randomly. Best just to keep beating him up until it
hurts, Edward et al should be on over 5000 HP anyway. When you get him
(just level up) go back to the room where you read "Hestia" and James
will make Nitro-Glycerine to blow up the door near the save point
(Patrick and James just can't stop experimenting). Go back to the
Vestry. Then you'll have to switch to Disk 4!
~CD 4~
~THE TREE OF LIFE~
BOOM! You're in the church again. It's really crawing with plants. You
need to do the organ puzzle. The organ is on the right up some stairs.
The combination is
SECRET,
PAIN,
PEOPLE,
LIGHT
(read the Guard's Letter, lazy!)
There will be a chord which moves the stone memorial below. Go down
into it and there will be a scene after you throw the arm of St. Daniel
into the water. This will be a point of no return. The monastery will
catch fire and you will have to climb the tower, so make sure you have
saved somewhere if you don't want to complete the game yet.
The tower is surrounded by wooden scaffolding. You can climb it. Then
go through the wall to the right and you'll get attacked by some roots.
Use fire spells and physical attacks. You'll face a few more roots as
you climb. The final roots will have Patrick's body attached to them!
At the top of the tower is a flower bud. Around here you can fight
black cats which drop the Pendant, in case you threw it away (aw, that
is so fair). Cats also drop Cat's Eye item, you can hold it while
fighting with fists, I don't know if it's any good. When you are ready,
inspect the flower bud.
~VARIOUS ENDINGS~
THE GROSS ENDING
If you don't have a Pendant, there will be an FMV in which Koudelka
and her companions get melted by Elaine. It's really horrible.
THE BEST ENDING
If you have the Pendant, Koudelka will deflect Elaine's attack and they
will flee further up the tower. Elaine will chase you and catch up with
you about 3 times (hence the boss theme is called "Patience"). You have
to defeat her or it's Game Over. Elaine 1 is weak against fire, not sure
about the others, but if you have guns and fists you should be able to
kill her anyway, with Koudelka healing them. Your health must be over
7000 points by now.
Elaine will turn into a Demon in the belfry. Keep a tight formation and
give her a good fight with the Lifedrinker. Just lose to Elaine 3 or
this monster and you will get an ending movie. In my opinion, this is
probably the best ending for the characters.
THE HARD ENDING
You can watch this on YouTube anyway, but if you want punishment, try
and kill Demon Elaine. She has more than 22000 HP. Use the Roman Nuts,
Lifedrinker, Sacnoth Sword, etc. and wear armour because she has a bad
physical attack. Honestly, it's not really worth it.
..and that's it, awww.
