A. Why the script?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Koudelka is a gothic horror RPG set in the year 1898, and in one location:
Nementon (sometimes spelled Nemeton) Monastery.  It has an intelligent and
mature script and many cut scenes and FMVs all of which are fully voiced.
However there is no on screen text in English, and no pause button.  This makes
the task of transcribing rather awkward, and probably explains the lack of a
complete script FAQ, until now.

As the first of the Shadow Hearts games, Koudelka was the one that set the
stamp on the series, with its mix of horror and religious themes, edgy humour
and morally ambiguous characters, combined with perverted monster designs and
ethereal music.  It may have been made for the Playstation, and released in
2000, but the years have not diminished the beauty and originality of
Koudelka.  It remains as a testament to the brilliant imagination of its
creator: the writer, director, producer and composer Hiroki Kikuta.

His company Sacnoth produced the game, but it proved to be a commercial failure
and he left the studio.  Then his ideas were developed further in the following
two games, Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts Covenant, and the battle system was
completely changed with the introduction of the greatly admired Judgement Ring.
A fourth game, From the New World, with a different setting and characters has
also been released.

Despite the critical acclaim that the Shadow Hearts games have received, both
Sacnoth, the developer of Koudelka and Shadow Hearts, and now Nautilus, the
company that developed Covenant and From the New World, have ceased to exist,
and sales of these games have never been able to match their quality.

Koudelka is where the story of Koudelka Iasant and the mystical yet dangerous
Emigre Document (called the Emigre Manuscript in the later games) begins.  The
setting of Nementon Monastery in Wales, also makes another appearance.

Koudelka is a significant game, not just because it is a stunning achievement,
but also because without Koudelka there would be no Shadow Hearts games, and
no Yuri Hyugi.  Yuri and Koudelka are two of the most intriguing and believable
characters ever created for a video game and the third member of this group,
Roger Bacon, is, well, the most bizarre and yet endearing thirteenth century
Franciscan philosopher you could ever hope to meet.

1. Chapters
2. Images
3. Spelling
4. Characters and Abbreviations

1. Chapters
I have divided the script into chapters.  These are  not based on the rooms of
the building that Koudelka explores, nor the enemies she and her companions
defeat, but on the cut scenes and FMVs that form a crucial part of the story.

There are already walkthroughs for the game on GameFAQs, and this is not an
attempt to provide another one. Since my intention is to highlight the quality
of the story and character interactions I have used excerpts from the script as
chapter headings.  There are some that have no speech and are simply FMVs.

2. Images
The links to images from the game have been added, so you can relate the
script more directly to the scenes. Many thanks to Saikyo Mog, who
painstakingly played the game and took all the pictures I wanted, though the
captions are in his inimitable style.

3. Spelling
I live in the UK and I use English spelling.  As there is no text on screen I
have transcribed the speech as I heard it, and used the form of spelling that I
know best.  Since the setting is in Wales I think this choice is justified.

4. Characters and Abbreviations

Characters
Koudelka:  K
Edward:    E
James:     J
Ogden:     O
Bessie:    B
Charlotte: C
Thief:     T
Elaine:    El
Patrick:   P
Roger:     R

Abbreviations

---- = actions of characters and events

**** = on screen text.

( )  = other sounds and reactions.

(?)  = words that are indistinct.

#    = scenes where there is an alternative.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C. The Script
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only point I want to make here is that the voices are all American, despite
the fact that the game is set in Wales, and most of the characters are British.
Unusually, this does detract from the game at all, as the voice acting is
excellent.  I have tried to indicate the intonation and emotion of the words
where possible, but really the script is best read in conjunction with the game
as the full force of the dialogue is only apparent when the voices are heard.

D11. " Too early Angel.  I'm not dead yet".
-------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=13

Scene: Koudelka  leaves her horse and climbs a rope onto the roof of the
monastery where she gets a view of the whole of Nementon Monastery.  FMV

K:  Ah.

----Slips.  Screams. Pendant falls.

----Koudelka breaks into an attic room through the window.

E:  Oy. Too early Angel.  I'm not dead yet.

----The injured man is lying propped up against the door.

K:  Not yet, but it looks like you're going to die soon.

E:  Maybe, but you'll have to pardon me while I attend to some unfinished
   business first.

----Edward is looking at something behind Koudelka.

K:  Business?  What you can you possibly accomplish in your condition?  You
can't even hold your gun steady.

E:  Won't know unless I try.  That thing's not going to die unless I shoot it
   two or three times.

----Monster with large teeth attacks Koudelka.

----Koudelka stabs it with her knife.

K:  (screams).

----Edward shoots.

E:  Here.  Here use this.

----Throws gun to Koudelka.

D12."There's no bloody way I'm going to pray for you"
-----------------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=25

Scene: After meeting with the young man lying injured against the door.
Koudelka fights and kills a werewolf using his gun.

E:  Hey what about him?

K:  He's dead.

E:  Really?  Thank you.  So I guess my time is up.

Hey.  Angel.  I'm not going to ask you to take me to heaven will you pray
   for me at least?

K:  Are you out of your mind?  There's no bloody way I'm going to pray for you.
But, I guess I owe you because you saved me too.

   Payback time.

----She casts a healing spell.

E:  Arghhh.

K:  Sh, shut up. Keep it down.

R:  (groans)

K:  Oh oh.  Ok.  (panting)

   Let's go.

----He stays sitting.

Stand up or I'll leave you here.

E:  What happened?  It doesn't, it doesn't hurt anymore.  I'm cured.

K:  Yeah.  And?  So I cured you.  So what.

E:  You?  You cured me?  But I was almost dead.  I'm confused.  So you really
   are an angel?

K:  Don't be foolish.  Do you really think that there are angels on earth?
I'm no angel.  I'm just a medium with a little curing power.

E:  I'm, I'm Edward Plunkett.  I know I look pretty shady, but you don't look
   too wholesome yourself. I..

K:  No.  I'm not like you and this is no place for people like you.  Why did
   you come here?

E:  I heard a rumour.

K:  A rumour?

E:  I heard something in London.  That the son of some rich family bought an
old monastery.  Spent a ton of money converting it into a house.  I heard
he brought quite a lot of harlots here.  Seems like he was having a great
   time.

K:  So.  Where is this monastery?

E:  That's what I want to know.

I came all this way to put a poor man's fear of God into this rich bastard,
and so far I haven't found anything.  Then this monster attacked me.

I almost got killed.  If you'd  come any later no doubt I'd  have been
singing hymns in his stomach right now.

K:  Shouldn't have brought such a good horse she's too fast. (Said to herself.)

E:  Too bad you won't be hearing me singing those hymns.  When I was a boy I
   was  a pretty good soprano.

K:  If you don't stop talking I'll leave you here.

My name is Koudelka.  And I'm only going to say this once.  So don't
forget.  If you want to get out of here alive I suggest you stick very
   close.  Got it?

E:  Charmed I'm sure.

---------------------------------------
D13." Have you two been together long?"
---------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=42

Scene: Koudelka and Edward go downstairs and meet with an elderly couple,
Ogden and Bessie Hartman, who are caretakers of the Nementon Monastery.  They
then sit down at a table to eat.  Bessie remains standing.

O:  How unusual that you two have decided to come to our rural district.  There
   is really nothing interesting here.

B:  It has gotten so cold outside. we weren't expecting any visitors...The soup
is all we have.  Please have as much as you want.

O:  Oh yes, please.

E:  Thanks.  It smells great.

B:  Wouldn't you like some dear?  Don't you like potato soup?

K:  No it's not that.  I'm all right for now.  Thank you for your hospitality
   though.

B:  No trouble at all.  Please let me know if there is anything we can do.  We
are the only ones who live here, and it's so rare we get any visitors.

E:  So are you two really the only ones that live here?

O:  Why do you ask?

E:  Well it's pretty foggy so I couldn't tell for sure, but this it seemed like
an old church or something.  Seems a little big for just the two of you.

O:  You're right.  In the ninth century a saint from Ireland named Daniel
Scotius built a place of worship here to appease monsters and evil spirits.
That is how the Nementon monastery started, or so I've heard.

K:  Monsters.  Is that right.

O:  Yes.  What about them?

E:  You might not believe this but we saw a monster on our way here.

O:  Is that so?  You saw it too?

E:  You mean...that monster has been around for a while?

O:  Well, we have been taking care of the monastery for a number of years, but
from about six months ago...monsters hare been appearing.

B:  We saw more and more every night.

O:  And I used to be a sailor, and I'm not afraid of any monster.

B:  Oh dear, what if something terrible happens to you.

E:  We almost got killed back there.  And now we're out of bullets.

O:  That's not good.  The monsters might try and attack you again.  I'll spare
   you some bullets.

E:  Thanks.  That'll be great.

B:  Looking after others.  He's so wonderful like that.

K:  So, have you two been together long?

B:  Yes.  Quite a while.  Now all he does is paint and maintain the building.
   Just his daily routine.

But back in the old days...

E:  Thanks Ogden.  I really owe you.

--------------------------------------------------------------
D14. "If the soup weren't poisoned then I would have had some"
--------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=43

Scene: After receiving the hospitality of the Ogdens Koudelka and Edward leave
and go into a large kitchen, where Edward begins to feel ill.

E:  Now this would make good rations.  We'll take some with us.

----Edward walks to the table.

K:  I can't believe it.  Are you still hungry?

E:  I didn't have anything to eat or drink for three days.  Of course I'm
hungry.  Speaking of which, you wasted all that food.  What's wrong with
   you?

K:  Yeah.  If it weren't poisoned then I would have had some.

E:  Pardon?

K:  I said: if the soup weren't poisoned, then I would have had some.  Got it?

E:  Poisoned?  No way.

K:  Just a little bit.  I smelt some poisonous plant.

E:  Uh.  What's happening?

K:  I can tell you how you will feel.  In about half an hour you won't be able
to move your body.  If you don't find an antidote you will definitely die.

E:  So they were trying to kill us.  But why?

K:  Don't know.  But it seems they are quite used to doing it this way.
   They must be hiding something.

----Edward is crouched on the floor in pain.

E:  (groaning in pain)

K:  Listen Edward, I am going to try and cure you now, but you have to promise
that when I do you won't get mad and rush back to that couple right away.
It is safer if we pretend we are dead and continue exploring this
building.  I think we'll find something interesting for sure.

------------------------------------------------------------------
D15. "It wasn't the kind of problem that faith alone could solve."
------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=51

Scene: Koudelka and Edward find a man on the ground in the courtyard of the
herb garden, and after they defeat a large plant monster, he recovers.  His
name is James O'Flaherty.

J:  Ah.  My head.  Ooh.  What happened?

----Sits up rubbing his head.

J:  Oh.  Yes that's right.  That monster...(groans)

----Notices Koudelka and Edward.

J:  Who on earth are you two?

E:  Hey!  We rescued you and that's your way of saying thanks?

J:  Little did I know that thieves these days, were into rescuing perfect
   strangers.

E.  You.

----Edward moves forwards as if to hit James.  Koudelka stops him.

K:  My name is Koudelka and this is Edward.  Would you mind telling us how you
ended up collapsed down this path?

----James gets to his feet and Koudelka gives him a hand to assist him.

J:  My name is James, James O'Flaherty.  I've been searching for something and
it took me to the monastery.  Little did I know it had become a breeding
   ground for demonic spirits.

E:  Then how did you get in here dressed like that?

J:  Through the main gate of course.  The caretakers welcomed me with open
   arms.

E:  That husband and wife team?  And the food?  Was there no poison in your
   food?

J:  What are you talking about?  Are you out of your mind?

K:  These caretakers tried to poison and kill us.

J:  That's not funny.  I find it unbelievable that you should try to dupe an
upstanding member of the Christian faith.

K:  So nothing happened to you then?

J:  Of course not.  Not until I encountered that monster.

E.  And we are the ones that took care of that monster.  Far be it from me to
expect any word of gratitude from you.

J:  I see.  But I can tell from your appearances that the power of faith alone
wasn't enough to smooth things out with that monster.

K:  It wasn't the kind of problem that faith alone could solve.

J:  Ugh. (disapproves)

----James stands up and turns to look at the font.

J:  Why, this plinth.  It's broken now, but holy water ran from it until
   recently.

Ah, but I have become distracted.

----Holds out hands in supplication.

J:  Almighty God, please give me the strength to ward off these monsters.

E:  I can see that we have wasted our time here.

K:  Mmhum (agreeing)

E:  Let's go Koudelka.

J:  Just a minute.

Although I am under the protection of the Lord it doesn't hurt to take
precautionary measures.  I think I will go with you.

****With the monster gone, the font has once again filled with holy water.

-------------------------------------------------------------
D16. "Why don't you ask the bullets who is being ridiculous?"
-------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=53

Scene: At the end of a long dark corridor lined with windows, they pause at a
window.  Edward stands near the open window.

J:  What a dark and depressing building.  Even with the temple you can't feel
the presence of the Lord's light.  I can't believe I set foot in this
   place.

E:  (quoting poetry) Where all have gone and all must go, to be the nothing
that I was.  They are born to life and living woe.

J:  Lord Byron.  No.  I am not an admirer of his.  In the first place his
   poetry is unrefined.

E:  Who gave you the right to judge the refinement of poetry?

J:  Poetry should delve into the depths of the souls of the faithful, and
others.  It should inspire the soul, as Alexander Pope, George Herbert...

K:  If they have the power to do away with these evil spirits, I'd choose
anyone, even that dear old carpenters son.

J   Blasphemous!

K:  (laughs)

J:  Pagan!  How dare you utter such words of sin.

K:  To seek help from someone you have never met before is ridiculous.
Especially when people are dying from hunger every day in London.

J:  The filthy and immoral little beggars who deserve to die.  Heaven is..

----The sound of gunfire rings out.

----They all duck down and crouch.

E:  That doesn't sound like a demonic spirit to me.

K:  The noise is coming from that building over there.

E:  The poison didn't kill us, so they are taking the fast and easy way now.

----James moves closer to the window.

J:  Don't be ridiculous.

E:  Why don't you ask the bullets who is being ridiculous?

----Edward starts to stand and Koudelka pulls him down.

K:  You idiot!

-----------------
D17. "Go to hell"
-----------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=63

Scene: They enter a neglected bedroom and Koudelka allows the spirits to
possess her.

(KP = Koudelka possessed.)

J:  My goodness, this building is full of dead bodies and skeletons.

K:  It's full of ghosts and spirits.  Ah.  I can feel them.  Oh my head hurts.

----Koudelka sits on the bed.

E:  I got a bad feelings about this.

J:  Horrible.  Dear Lord, please save these lost souls.

K:  This must have happened a long time ago.

K:  Uh, and the power is so strong.

If I can channel some of these spirits, maybe I can find out what happened
   here.

E:  Channel the spirits?

J:  Shame on you.  You two should be praying for their souls.

K:  The spirits are filling in this room.  I can let them possess my body so
   they can talk.

The reason I came here is that I heard the call of one particular female
   voice.

J:  I will not stand for this.  Not only do you not believe in God, but now you
are going to disturb the spirits?

K:  Shut up!  Would you stop bothering me?! (shouting at James)

K:  Huh, oh, chains and darkness, oh, oh, death, oh, oh no, oh, oh.

KP  (female) There were so many of them.  Yes.  Ah yes, ah.

E:  What?  What's going on?

KP: (female) They were in prison and tortured, and oh, thousands of them.

----Koudelka is standing and pointing at the other two.

KP: (male) Kill them.  They cut off my fingers.  They crushed my legs.  They
smashed my head, cut out my guts.

They took everything from me.  They locked me up and chopped my body.

----Koudelka is now bent over in pain.

KP: (female) Ah my eyes.  Ah my ears.  Ah they're burned.  Ah help...

----Koudelka sits on the bed.

K:  Ah, how horrible.

K:  This place used to be a prison, for hundreds of years, kept in secret.
Whoever went against the authorities, or misconducted themselves in any way
was locked up here, and, killed.

----Edward crouches and leans forward to touch her.

----KP stands and thrusts him back.

KP: (male) No don't touch me you piss off!
   Ah.  Go to hell!

----Koudelka is bent double on the floor.

K:  Ah, oh.

---------------
D18. "A Ghost?"
---------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=57

Scene: Edward follows a small girl who is walking through the hallways.  FMV.

E:  Hey.  Hey, wait a minute.

----He runs after the child as she turns a corner.  She turns to look at him.

E:  Hey.

K:  Edward!

----Koudelka grabs his arm to stop him from falling over a broken edge to his
   death.

C:  "You should've just died... I wanted you to lay down and die."
(corrected this line, 4th December 2007)

C:  (evil laughing) Hehehe.

----She disappears into the wall.

E:  A ghost?

-------------------------------------------------------------
D19. "You better keep your mouth shut.  If you want to live."
-------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=71

Scene: Having defeated three ghostly likenesses of themselves, the three are in
a small chapel, looking at a stained glass window and small altar.

****Edward utters a deep sigh as he stands in front of the stained glass.

E:  Did you see all those bodies?  Be quite a party if they were alive.

J:  They probably have been abandoned for hundreds of years.  Must be some
   fascinating old stories.

K:  I saw some pretty fresh ones too.  One who was shot.  One who had been
cracked in the head with an axe.  And some with no visible signs of injury,
so they must have been poisoned.

E:  Maybe the new ones were fortune seekers like us?  That old couple...

J:  Do you mean to tell me they killed all those people?  Rubbish.

K:  All those deaths...are rubbish?!

J:  They are all liars and thieves anyway.  This is still a monastery.  It is
still God's house, prison or no.  Why those liars and heathen were killed
   is none of my concern.

E:  How could you possibly say a thing like that?  That doesn't sound very
   priestly.

----Edward and James face each other in anger.

J:  I am not a priest.  I am a bishop.

E:  I don't give a rat's ass what you are!

E:  Look.  I'm not saying that all those people were saints, OK?  That doesn't
mean they should be put to death.

J:  You saw that old couple.  They are so well mannered, kind.  Do you think
   they are killers?

E:  Good manners.  Yes.  Think about it. (shouting) Why would they leave the
   place in such a mess?

J:  I don't know.

E:  You'd at least think they'd bury the bodies.

J:  Possibly.

K:  Anyway, I have a strange feeling we are not alone with all these bodies and

----Koudelka looks at them both.

Scene: They are in a prison cell with no apparent way out and blocked by a
barred gate and the place is strewn with dead bodies.  The three are standing
looking at the bars.

K:  Darn.

E:  How does it look?  Do you think we can get out?

K:  I don't think so.  You'd need the strength of a bear to break those bars
   with your hands.

J:  What do you mean we cant get out?  How hard can it be?

K:  Why don't you ask these guys?

E:  Dammit!  Did you see that?  Someone's been in here.

J:  Shut up and get us out of here.  How hard can it be to two thieves like
   you.

E:  Try telling that in the East End, holy man. Your severed head will hit the
ground before you even finished the thought.

J:  Hopeless.  I can't believe I am wasting my time on you.  I am on a mission

----A ghostly figure of a girl appears on the other side of the bars.

C:  What a waste, such a terrible waste.

C:  My name's Charlotte.  Not that is mean anything.  nothing you never (?)

K:  So you died here as well?

C:  Yes. I died here too.  Hundreds and hundreds of years ago.

They locked me up in here right after I was born. They beheaded me the day
I turned nine.  Happy birthday.  I've been trapped here ever since and
no-one even knows who I am.

J:  My poor little angel.

C:  {laughs} Poor little angel me?  Save your pity for yourself.  You'll be
   dead within three days.

J:  That's not true.  I don't know what your circumstances are, but I know that
your mother loved you very very much.

C:  My mother?  I don't have a face, a name, where she came from, nothing.  You
   telling me that means nothing.

From the day I was born to the day I die, no-one ever loved me, and I never

Scene: They are standing in a treasure filled room.  There are pictures with
gold frames and various items piled up.

****You have found a storage room filled with items at the end of the tunnel.

J:  Amazing.  Absolutely amazing.  I can't believe these treasures are in this
   monastery.  Is that Montaigne's signature?

----James is looking at some framed pictures.

Oh, that's a Caravaggio!  Unbelievable truly.  Why have these treasures
   been forgotten?

K:  Treasures. (mocking)

J:  If these treasures can be contributed to the Vatican, their value to
Christianity is unquantifiable.  What a discovery!

K:  Do you remember what this place is?  It's not just a monastery.  It was a
prison.  People were executed for fighting each other for supremacy.

These treasures must have been taken from them, soaked in curses and
hatred.  You'll be cursed if you worship those things.

J:  I am a busy man who does not have the time to teach you the importance of
faith.   But I will tell you why we have found these treasures.  It
can only have come from the guidance of God.  God sees all.  He knows all.
   Got it?

K:  Preach to the converted.

J:  What about you Edward?  You seem a little more educated than she.

E:  I don't really care.  Talk to me about monetary value.  Save the holy crap.

K:  (laughs)

J:  Hm.  Seems I am disappointed once again.

J:  I believe these dead thieves are better than you two.  At least they
   appreciated true value.

K:  Instead of preaching I want you to understand something OK.  You can't
label all those dead bodies as thieves hunting treasure.  I saw plenty of
dead women who were cut up and mixed in with the mummies and they were
   pretty fresh.

E:  Yeah strange.  Even if I was used to seeing dead bodies I'd be vomiting.

K:  So it is that couple.  But why?

J:  Please!  How could a kind and faithful couple be cold blooded killers?
   This is the work of jealousy and greed and pagans born of savagery;
immigrants.  I will not be a party to such abusive slander.

They speak to him.

E:  Thief! (shouts)

K:  He's just been sneaking around in the shadows and sniffing for treasure.

E:  Just like us.

J:  Well sir, explain yourself.

J:  It's as plain as day this ruffian's a blood thirsty killer who's been
   chasing us.

Where are you from?  Hamburg?  Not that it really matters.  Obviously  a
   dirty immigrant thief.

Probably infected with cholera, or something.  Most of you are.

T:  None of your business where I was born.  You bastard!

K:  I don't really care where you were born, and I agree, (laughs) he is a
   bastard.

----Koudelka crouches down close to the thief.

But tell me, did you kill all these people?

T:  Look.  I'm an immigrant.  I'm a thief and maybe I did drop a chandelier on
you, but that's just because I wanted all this pile for myself.

E:  So you killed all these people. (shouts)

T:  No.  I swear to God... not your God: bigot.

K   What do you mean?

T:  It is the couple, the couple who look after this place.

J:  What?!

T:  I'm telling you the truth.  I've seen 'em.  I've been down here a long
time.  Usually they use an axe when they catch thieves.  The thieves come
down here unarmed.  They are stupid.  They get caught from behind.  I'd
watch my back if I was you.

J:  Unbelievable.

T:  No I'm telling you.  The lucky ones die on the first strike.  I've heard
the others screaming through the night, clutching their bellies, and find
   them in the morning dead.

No, I'm telling you their fingers through their hearts (?) right through
   their organs.

Look, take it or leave it, but I'm telling you the truth.  Those two are
Satan incarnate.  I may look shady but killing's not my style.

But the more wholesome they look on the outside, the colder and uglier the
heart is.  Just look at him! (points at James)

K:  (laughs)
E:  (laughs)

E:  Yeah. Good assessment for a thief.

J:  You're crazy if you believe this scoundrel.

This killer's obviously executed hundreds of people.  He needs to be turned
over to the police and judged in the proper form.

K:  We're crazy?  Why?  Just because he's an immigrant, or is it just because
he is one of the unsaved?  That's bull and you know it, you pig headed
   bigot!

E:  I believe this guy.  Thieves can be exceedingly honest you know.
Still he did try to kill us.  For that...

----Edward shoots and kills the thief.

J:  What, what did you you that for?!

----James goes forward to the dead thief.

E:  If our lives cease being threatened, that's a victory for God and all his
glory, right?  If we go on letting them attack us the filthy godless pagans

win. Which you would like to bet on?

corner of the bookcases.  James starts to examine the books.

****There's an unusual plant growing in the cracks of the bookcases.  You can
feel a faint pulse emanating from it.

J:  This one's Mylius, and Lamphrick and Michael Maier and Kumras.
Amphatiatrum Sapienti Eterneai.  What a collection of books!

E:  May I ask you something?  What are all these?

J:  Ancient books on mysticism and alchemy.  Ancient science.  It's enticing
really.  It's all about making gold from lead.  It's just a ruse peddled by
power hungry tricksters blinded by greed.

But, in amongst the trash, there are some valuable works illustrating basic
useful experiments for predicting the laws of nature.  Predicting a time
when all men will be treated equally.  God's will.  No room for this
   argument nowadays.

K:  James...Are you...

J:  (interrupts) This is a Kabbalah?!

E:  Meaningless.

J:  Why?  Why is it not here?

E:  What?!

J:  Where else could it be? (getting agitated)

E:  Are you looking for something?

J:  I don't understand.  I don't understand.

----Edward is getting angry and waving his arms at James.

E:  You don't understand...I don't understand.  What are you grumbling about?
You are acting really strange.  Just concentrate and tell us what going on.

J:  I do not like this.  We all have our reasons.  Let's not delve into each
   others' personal affairs.

E:  I am not bound to please thee with my answers.

J:  Do all men kill the things they do not love.

E:  Hate any man the things he would not kill.

J:  And I thought all outlaws read simple poets.  You read Shakespeare.  You're

----They walk forwards to look at a coffin.

----The coffin lid rises and falls to the floor, and a figure is revealed with

E:  Is that just a mummy?  Cross your fingers.

----Edward sits with his back to the coffin.

K:  That was disappointing.

Scene: After the "mummy" crashes back into the coffin there is a cut-scene
and James gets very agitated about what he has just heard.

J:  Did you say Emigre Document?

----James tries to talk to person inside the coffin.

What do you know about the Emigre Document?  Where is it?  Answer me!

E:  Emigre Document.  Is that what you have been looking for?  Hey you
crotchety old fart.  I'm sick of this.  You want to talk?  Fine.  I'll slit
your holy throat and leave your body for the rats.

----James moves to lean on the mantelpiece above the fireplace and Edward
   faces him.

K:  Edward.

J:  I have no choice.  Here it is.  I am on instructions direct from the
Vatican.  There is a manuscript said to be somewhere in the building.

E   And that manuscript is?

J:  Right.  It's called the Emigre Document.

K:  Is it very important?

J:  For hundreds of years it was kept deep inside the Vatican Library.  No-one
was allowed to read it.  In fact many people thought it didn't even exist.

E:  That's weird. So why is it here now?

J:  Then somebody stole it.

K:  Stolen?  From the Vatican?

J:  Right.

E   No way.  How many people could steal a thing like that from the Vatican?

J:  Not many people could.  You really have to know the place or have enough
money.  The wealthy gentleman who purchased this monastery, bribed someone
in the Vatican to steal the Emigre Document for him.

K:  Wealthy gentleman?

J:  Yes.  Patrick Heyworth. (long pause) My friend.

K   But it is not like it was priceless art or something.
Why would he be interested in a thing like that?

J:  For years Patrick has dabbled in mysticism and alchemy.  He's on the brink
of crossing the line and playing God.

E:  Playing God?

J:  Creating life, Edward.

It is thought that the ancient Druids' forbidden secrets on eternal life
and resurrecting the dead, are contained in the Emigre Document.

K:  I can't believe that.

J:  Of course it's just silly superstition.  That is why I am here.  To try to
convince Patrick  to drop his dangerous experiments, and return the Emigre
   Document to the Vatican.

E:  Wow. (sarcastic) You'd never guess a lunatic like that was living here, by
   looking at the place.

J:  According to the caretakers, he lives in the building next to the temple.

K:  They said that?

E:  Yes.  They're terrified.  With all the crazy things  going on here, they
haven't even seen Patrick, yet they feel indebted to him

J:  That is why they asked me here, to see if I can save him.

E:  So that's your story.

K:  I dunno.  One more mystery that needs unravelling.

After this scene, and having examined the blocked wall at the end of the church

Another FMV.

K:  What the...What's that bell?

J:  Just the passing of another day.  Oh no!  Today's All Saint's Day!

----Electrical and flame energy circle around a large thing that grows bigger.

K:  The spiritual energy is coming together.  What power.  It's like..

   A monster.

K:  Ah.

----A huge Gargoyle comes to life and growls.

E.  What's happening?  This can't be.

----They run away.  Koudelka falls.

E:  No!  Koudelka!

O:  Ah yes. She was merciful. She was benevolent, she believed me and she was

O:  It wasn't my fault. All of a sudden there was a coal ship out of nowhere.

****You feel the presence of someone behind you...someone you have met

R:  Ooh repent now, judgement day is near.  The cacophanous sound of the seven

wrath of the Lord.  Er, but I, no, I do not die, hmhm.

Death knows no boundaries. It is an integral part of each and every life.
Death is ultimately an act of grace and love from the Lord.  Aha.

----He sees Koudelka

R:  Ooh.  A blessing, is it not?

Daniel Scotius erigana...blameless soul.  That man has not a heart to be
found in his body.  Though I do thank him for building the monastery here.

----Koudelka rises to her feet.

K:  And you are?

R:  Where are my manners?  Hello.  My name is Roger Bacon.  I am a monk from
   the Franciscan order.

----They shake hands.

K:  A monk?  And I thought you were a mummy.

----Koudelka folds her arms.

R:  Yes, you are quite right in your assessment of me.  Sun-dried kippers may
be more pleasant to look at than my shrivelled up appearance.  There was a
time when I was hailed as the foremost warlock, but my profession seems to
go in and out of fashion with the passage of time.

Can't do much about that, can I?

K:  You are a strange man.  That's if you can be called a man.

R:  I have given up being a man many hundreds of years ago.  I am no longer a
person, though I hesitate to answer questions concerning my existence,
because I have yet to figure out exactly what I am.

K:  That's fine.  It's not that I need to know anyway.  But tell me.  Why were
you sleeping in such a strange place?

R:  I have never been able to awake in a good mood.  And I just planned to rest
for a while.  What year is it anyway?  Are we still on the Gregorian
   calendar?

K:  Are you trying to fool me or are you being serious?

R:  Of course I am being serious.  The clock I own was too big for the coffin.

K:  It's 1898.

R:  Lord have mercy.  I've been asleep for close to a hundred years.

K:  Well, I guess there are some things that can still surprise you.

R:  Watch out.  When life no longer has the element of surprise that is when
you are walking down the path to the Lord.

----Roger walks towards Koudelka and looks her up and down in appreciation.

R:  Anyway.  As a token of my appreciation I'm going to keep the metal gate
unlocked for you.  Go through the gate.

----Koudelka walks to the steps.

K:  Why would you do this for me?

R:  It seems to me that your friends are running amok inside the monastery

E:  Really?  Where were they?

trying to avenge the death of Elaine.

J:  The death.  Of Elaine?  I don't believe it.  This is preposterous.

E:  Who is Elaine?

K:  I have no idea.  All I know is that Elaine's spirit called me to this
   place.

Tell me, who is Elaine?  And Patrick?

The caretakers told me that robbers broke into Elaine's home while Patrick
was away and murdered her...Elaine was a benefactor for the caretakers, and
they took it upon themselves to murder every single robber and desperado
that entered the grounds.  It...was a form of revenge for them.

J:  (speaking for the first time quietly and without anger.)
I am originally from Ireland you see.  Although small, my family had a
successful business and were soon able to send me to school, which I loved
   from a very early age.

I was soon accepted to a prestigious university in England.  With my
parents' assistance I made my way across the ocean.  I met Patrick at
university.  We were both studying chemistry and embarking upon similar
   paths.

About that same time I, I began competing for the love of a beautiful
woman. Elaine.  And we had a falling out.  I loved Elaine with all my
heart.  Omnia vinset (?)amour.  But love does not conquer all.  I soon
discovered that I lacked the social status and inheritance money necessary
to properly care for someone so well bred and sheltered as Elaine.

I gave up my suit and made way for Patrick.  To ease my pain I joined the
church and left the secular world behind.  And being the perfectionist that
I am, the Vatican made me a bishop and in charge of some very important
   matters.

But it's been so hard to distance myself from one's emotional attachments.
Although I have not seen them for twenty years, I wished them all the best
in their life together.  And if it hadn't been for this, I wouldn't have
thought twice about seeing Patrick again.

That's right.  Patrick.  How can this be?  He promised me he was going to
take care of Elaine and make her happy.  What could have happened?

K:  Being a witness to the gory aftermath, I have a hard time believing that
the caretakers were acting on revenge alone.  Believe me.  It was an
unimaginably heinous sight.  And what about these monsters that keep
   appearing?

No.  There's a bigger secret we have yet to uncover.

----Koudelka holds hold out her right arm, in her hand, the key.

This is the key to Patrick's mansion.  Shall we go?

K:  Charlotte.  If you keep this up you are the only one that's going to get
   hurt.

C:  I'm not fooling around.  I don't want your pity.  I've had enough.

K:  Charlotte listen to me.  I understand you.  We're very similar you know.

C:  You could never understand me.  How could you?  I've never been out of this
place.  I was born.  I was executed.

On the day I was born a priest came to me and said: Dear Lord, please
accept into your glorious kingdom this poor sinful one.

Tell me?  What did I do that was so bad?  Is it my fault that I was born?
If I was born just to be killed  why did she have me?

K:  Oh then just...my mother died of me (?) too.

I've been alone ever since I was a little girl, just like you, that's

C:  That's why what?  That's why you you understand me?  That's why you're like

K:  Oh Charlotte, I'm so sorry.  I want you to understand.  I really...

C:  A curse.

K:  What? (shocked)

C:  A curse upon you.

K:  (gasps) Charlotte.

C:  On you.  On your friends.  A curse upon you all.  I will kill everything.

Why don't you all just die.  Die!  When every thing's dead and gone then

K:  They are letters from your mother.

C:  My mother?  Letters?  There are so many.

K:  Did you know that your mother was the queen of Hanover?  It seems that
after you were born in secret, your mother was locked up inside Aldernay
   Castle.

Even while she was imprisoned there she sent many letters to you here at

Scene: After defeating the monster in the Portrait Room in Patrick's Mansion
they stop in front of the the portrait of Elaine.  She appears.

E:  So this is Elaine?

K:  Yes.  She's the one I had the psychic vision of.  Do you doubt it?

J:  No indeed. (said with reverence and awe)

K:  Good.  Let's begin.

----Koudelka holds up her arms.

----Elaine appears out of the portrait and Koudelka collapses to the floor.

El: It has been a long time indeed Mr O'Flaherty.

J:  Oh Elaine. Is it really you?

El: Yes.  It is.  It is such a pity that we meet again in this way and I can
only present myself to you in this form.

This is the woman that responded to my voice is it not?  Thank you for
doing this for someone like myself.

J:  Elaine.  I haven't yet come to terms.  Please tell me how this happened to
   you?

El: Of course I will explain.  James. (said gently with affection) Eighteen
years ago I was murdered by some thieves that broke into my home.  I was
helpless.  Both Patrick and Ogden were out on business.  There was nothing
   that anyone could do.

J:  I will not accept this.  This should not have happened. (in anguish)

El: Yes.  Patrick responded the same exact way.  He could not accept my death.
He spent years and years perfecting his craft of wizardry, and tried
everything in his power to bring me back to life.

E:  Resurrecting the dead?  Is this for real?  I mean we're not talking about
   Frankenstein here.

K:  Frankenstein?

E:  That novel written about a hundred years ago.

El: He was taking it very seriously, and he had found the key to actually
   make it happen.

J:  The Emigre Document.

El: Yes.  With Ogden's assistance and the powers from ancient Druids he  held a
   resurrection ceremony in this monastery.

K:  But something went wrong, didn't it?

El: He only resurrected my physical body.  As you can see, my soul is still
doomed to roaming the universe, forever separated from my body.  And the
terrifying thing, is that my body is resurrected as a heartless monster.

K:  Monster. (whispers)

El: Although the monster may look like me, it is not me.  Mr O'Flaherty.
Please.  Turn my body into ashes with your power.

J:  Ashes.  But if I do that I won't be able to bring you back to life! (in
   anguish)

El: Mr. O'Flaherty I was robbed of my life by those thieves and I could hate
them as mortal enemies.  Choose to think that my death was pre-ordained by
the Lord.  Please do not mourn my death.

----She reaches out to comfort James who is standing with his head bowed in
   despair.

El: It was wrong for Patrick to try to resurrect me, to undo the work of God.
Please do not be sad.  Death is at the heart of God's reason.  I urge you
to destroy my body.  Its existence defies the wise providence of Heaven.
It mustn't exist in this world.

----She disappears.

J:  Wait.  Elaine.  God. (weeping) Cursed.  What a cruel world.  I gave
everything for her happiness and now what am I left with?  I have no

Scene: Inside the secret library in Patrick's Mansion they come across Roger
Bacon again.

R: ...Around here somewhere..hm..well.  What took you so long?

K:  Roger!

E:  Aren't you the mummy from the coffin?  Since when have you two been
   acquainted?

R:  I am no mummy.  My name is Roger Bacon, and I'm just like any normal old
   man.

E:  I have been around for twenty years and I have yet to run across an old man
   as abnormal as yourself.

R:  I see.  Well I have been around for more than six hundred years and I have
seen plenty of ABNORMAL people just like myself.

J:  My dear old man.  Might you be related to the great warlock Roger Bacon who
made such a name for himself in the thirteenth century?

R:  You are very knowledgeable.  I am that warlock Roger Bacon you speak of.

E:  You mean to tell me that you were born in twelve-ten and have been alive
and well until the present day of eighteen-ninety-eight?

R:  Actually to be precise I was born in twelve fourteen.

J:  Koudelka.  What type of a joke is this?

K:  That's my question.

R:  This is no joke.  I am the reputable Roger Bacon.

J:  Very well then.  If you are truly that Roger Bacon then you will be able to
tell me with whom and where you studied.

R:  That's easy.  I entered Oxford in twelve-forty-seven and studied under the
tutelage of Robert Grosseteste, although as my professor I would not
consider him  to be a wise man.

I penned my masterpiece Opus Majus as well as numerous other books on
natural science.  Being a visionary pioneer. (shouting)

Hm.  I must say that my work has influenced generations of work that
followed.  But alas, in hindsight, that work pales in comparison to the
work I did copying the Emigre Document for the Pope.

J:  The Emigre Document.  I figured you would know about that book.

R:  Of course.  It took me five years to copy the book in its entirety.  I know
everything there is to know about the book.

K:  What is it about?

R:  It unravels the secrets of life that extend far beyond the largest sphere
(?).  It speaks of the secret rituals conducted by the ancient race of
Formors on immortality.  The Formors would claim the lives of the
resurrected as their own.  They reversed the laws of nature and the cycle
   of life.

When the Druids took over the Celts, Alexander the Great penned the Emigre
documents in Greek, for placement in the Great Library.

K:  Resurrecting the dead.  It is true.

R:  It has long been considered the most dangerous work of literature.  It was
safely guarded in the caverns of the Supreme Pontiff's quarters.  But
apparently, the book was not able to withstand the wears of time over
generations, and the Pope decreed that a new edition be created by copying
   the full text.

That is where I came in.  The Pontiff requested that I copy the book word
for word.  And when the work was finished, apparently I was supposed to be
killed.  But I am not one to be dealt with so carelessly.  I secretly
escaped, and eventually I made my way to the secret land referred to in
the text of the Emigre Document.

E:  And the secret rituals?  Don't tell me.

R:  You need look no further than myself.

K:  And you succeeded.

R:  Hm...though I cannot perform the same on others.  Yes.  I have been able to
escape the hands of death.  But I have not been able to escape the roots of
existence which are the seeds of change.  My body is not immune to change.
As you can see by my hideous appearance.  Hm.  I have had nothing to do
other than roam the earth for the last three hundred years.  I've seen all
I can take of mankind's cruelty.

So.  I returned here.  For some rest.  Well...hm...enough of this gossip.
I've got some research to do.  May I ask to be left alone?

Scene: They return to see Roger again after getting Patrick's research notes.

R:  Um, I know it's here.  I saw it here.  I put it here.

----Roger notices the three.

R:  What?  Have you come round to see me again?

J:  I want you to look at this.

R:  A research journal.

K:  I want you to tell us whether what's written there can actually happen or
   not.

R:  Well.  Let me see.  Yes, yes, I see.  Well that's right.  Resurrecting the
dead.  Hm.  A cauldron.  The Branwen tales indeed.  Yes.  It is most likely
that the events detailed here did take place.

J:  Just as I thought.

E:  But that's so frightening that...

R:  Personally I have not attempted it.  I am certain that the Emigre Document
contained accounts of secret rituals conducted to resurrect the dead.  But
as you can tell from reading this, it involves complicated predatory work.

I have given up discerning the impossibility of using the psychic powers
necessary to create such an immense psychic platform.  Moreover, I would
never have expected that people would attempt to challenge such a feat.

K:  The journals say that the physical body was resurrected but not the soul.

R:  Absolutely.  The Ancients held the secret to life in the palm of their
hands.  Hm.  But they could never come close to touching the secrets of the
soul.  They resurrected the dead in order to use their physical bodies as a
workforce.  Thus building the great civilisation we ofttimes speak of.  In
fact, we would not be far off if we called them...puppeteers.  Heehee.
Exploiting the human body as an object.

E:  If so then...

R:  Yes, resurrecting the dead and restoring them to life as it was before
   death is impossible.

J:  Then how do you return the resurrected body once again to earth?

R:  That (long pause) is a very complicated question.  Since it already defies
   universal logic.

J:  Please.

R:  It is no easy task.

J:  Tell me how.  It is what Elaine, God rest her soul, wanted.

R:  Right.  Hm.  It is not...absolutely impossible.  But, I would need to call
forth the sacred powers in order to complete such a feat.  Hm. (thinking)
Yes.  I know the arm of Daniel Scotius, the man who built this monastery,
is stored in a stone statue on the ground.  If, if we, throw that into a
cauldron we will successfully destroy the roots of the tree of life.  Hm.
After that I haven't a clue whether to call forth the energies of fire,
or entrust the task to water.  It is so complicated.

J:  Fire or water.

K:  What are we going to do?

R:  Oh Heavenly Father bless our souls and bring forth an end to this
   suffering.

   Oh...Hm...er, oh...

----Roger wanders away.

main Temple through this door.

K:  This must be the Temple.

E:  There is no way.  You could put a bullet through and it wouldn't budge!
   What are we gonna do?

K:  How ironic to have made it this far and not have access to the temple.

J:  Koudelka, Edward.  You both must go now.  It is my friend that is
apparently responsible for this disturbance, and therefore I am partially
responsible for this trouble.  I have no intention for asking for your
sympathy, and I am no position to plead for your help.  So from this point
forward I can manage on my own.

----Koudelka moves to face James.

K:  Don't kid yourself.  We didn't come along just for your sake.

E:  No.  Koudelka you should go back now.  It'll be far too dangerous.

K:  Edward, you're the one who should go home.  You were not meant for this
world.  Granted you are a good fighter having had plenty of experience, and
I won't deny the fact that you have the killer instinct either, but when
all is said and done, you are an average Joe.  I am not.  I was meant to
exist in this realm.  It's the only place I can carve out an existence for
   myself.

E:  Quit lecturing me!  I want no part of a lukewarm existence filled with
regret.  No.  My way is to not worry about consequences and to do whatever
it is that I want to do.  Chance means nothing to me.  Life's a gamble and
once you place your bet you better play to win or else you end up dead.

K:  Edward.  You really are ridiculous. (laughing).

E:  That's what they tell me.

J:  You do as you like.

----James walks to look more closely at the door.

E:  That I will.

K:  Suddenly when you feel like it you decide when you can and cannot open
   doors?

J:  Wait!  There's a way.  Remember when we were searching Patrick's mansion?
There was various chemicals around.  It may take some time, but I think I
can combine the chemicals to make nitro-glycerine.

K:  Nitro-glycerine!

E:  That's great!  You're talking powerful explosives here.

J:  For this door I think we'll need a full flask.  Indeed if I drop the flask
before I return I'll be knocking on Heaven's door in a flash.

----The ominous sound of the deep chime of a bell is heard.

J:  I go and it is done.  The bell invites me.  "Fear not Duncan for it is the
knell that summons thee to Heaven or to Hell." (quoting Shakespeare's
   Macbeth)

while they drink from the bottles each holds.

****James has decided to remain in the laboratory in order to make nitro-

J:  I'm going to begin my work.  Could you two wait for me here?

----Koudelka and Edward are sitting on the floor either side of the blazing
fire in Patrick's study each with a bottle, and they have obviously been
drinking and chatting for a while.

K:  (laughing)... and then, what happened to the girl Melody?

E:  She was gone the next morning.  She left with practically everything in the
   room.

K:  (laughing)  You don't have much luck....do you?

E:  You know what they say: the cleanest break up is when a woman runs out on
   you.

----Both laughing.

K:  But you're lucky, I mean to have so many people to kid around with.  But
for me, I'm all alone.  Been all alone all my life.

E:  But what about your childhood?

K:  Yes I did have a childhood.  I was born in a small town in Wales right off
the banks of the Taliesin river.  That was a small gypsy town.

E:  Gypsy?

K:  That's right, gypsy.  Though we didn't call ourselves gypsy.  We called
ourselves "wrong".  See, a true gypsy is born under the blue sky.  And is
destined to die under the same blue sky.  It's gypsy law.

E:  So then I guess you plan on dying underneath the blue skies?

K:  Hm.  Every gypsy is given a name at birth.  My given name was Zlato.

E:  Zlato.

K:  Mmhm

E:  It's got a strange resonance to that name.  What does it mean?

K:  I can't tell you. (laughing)

E:  That too must be part of the law?

K:  (laughing even more) The law it is.  ...Ha hm.

E:  You know ever since I met you, you have an enigmatic mysterious glint in
your eyes.  It must be the gypsy in you.  "The glance from thy soul
searching eye can raise with hope, depress with fear."

K:  Byron again?

E:  Yeah.

K:  You must really like him, don't you?

E:  Yes.  Somehow I feel as though we're birds of a feather.

K:  Then he must be self obsessed as well. (laughs)

E:  I'd rather be classified as a romantic. (sighs)

My father was a strict man.  He couldn't forgive his son for failing
academically.  He blamed my failure on the time I wasted inventing
adventures, dreaming of utopian landscape.  I was brought up to believe
that dreams, the power of the imagination, as well as all the things I
loved as a child, were useless.  A complete waste of time.  It was as if he
was telling me I was useless.  Then again.  Maybe just that.

I think I probably was born too late.  By the time I was fifteen everything
there was to be done, had already been done.  The western territories
were colonised, the jungles had been explored.  There was no wilderness for
me to wander in to.  No jungle for me to cut my way through.  I guess
that's how I ended up roaming the country.

Oh granted.  I picked a few fights along the way.  Played with fire.
Gambled on my life a few times.  But none of that comes close to the truth
I'm searching for.  I yearn for something far greater.  I can't quite
explain myself.  It is as though I am on a quest for some intangible
   treasure of sorts.

----Sad music begins to play.

Koudelka, I envy you.  Psychic powers that few are blessed with.  And being
born a gypsy, you can choose to live how you wish.

K:  And who gave you the right to act as if you figured me out?  Do you have
any idea how I was raised?  Ha.  You make me laugh.  Adventures.  Please.
You haven't the slightest clue.  Do you have any idea how much pain my
   psychic powers have brought me?

My father died when I was only a child.  I predicted the exact time, place
and ending of my father's life.  Imagine that.  Predicting your own
father's death.  Hm.  No, I was cursed as a child.  Being given powers not
meant for a child.  And my mother?  Huh.  She, she was so frightened and
full with hatred for me, she tried to kill me with her very hands.

The gypsy elders got together and decided to excommunicate me.  I was only
nine then. (said softly)  Do you have any idea how a nine year old child
survives, without the help of a living soul? (getting angry)

Treasures!  You must be joking!  Have you ever cried and begged for your
next meal?  Did you ever sell your body seeking shelter from the frigid
night air?  Huh.  I used to be just like Charlotte.  When she cried and
said: No-one has ever loved me.  Argh.  Those words cut straight through
me.  It was me she was talking about!

Just like her, I wished that everybody would die, and harboured a hatred
for all mankind.  But you see, Charlotte has made her peace.  Hm, hm, hm.
   {dismissive laughter)  Gone to heaven.

----Koudelka waves her free arm in the air in a gesture of dismissal.

K:  Me?  I'm still alive, (in mocking despair) and still all alone.  No-one
ever lends a helping hand.  No-one!

----Koudelka gets to her feet and begins to stagger while confronting Edward,
   who stays on the floor.

E:  Koudelka, you?

K:  I am not as free as you make me out to be. (getting more drunk and angry)
I am a poor dirty ignorant woman who threw her gypsy pride to the dogs, in
order to live.  But you see, even someone like me can do good...with my
powers...I can ease the pain of others.  That's when I feel good about
living.  I don't need to be loved.  I just want my life to have some
meaning, and just want someone to tell me they need me. (almost in tears)

----Koudelka staggers and folds her legs to sit down again.

You, huhuh, no way you...would ever...understand.  Humph, humph, (a
snorting laugh that is more like a sob)

----Koudelka ends up half curled up, the bottle at her side and her back to
   Edward, quietly sobbing.

----There is the sound of the door opening and James' voice is heard.

****If you throw "Daniel's Arm" into the cauldron and call upon the power of
   fire...

Do you want to throw Daniel's arm in?  Yes/No.

----James has the arm.

J:  Are you sure?

----Edward nods.

J:  Let's proceed.  St Daniel Scotius protect us from these evil spirits and
   grant us inner strength.  Amen.

----James holds the arm above his head and drops it into the cauldron.

----They start to run as the plant comes to life.

K:  Go!

----The plant smashes a window in the church.

J:  Now.  Created and born out of dust.  Now.  Go quietly and return to thy
   maker!

----James throws the lighted lamp at the plant and they leave by a broken
   window.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=224

Scene: After climbing up the outside of the church they go back inside to see,
at the top of the tree, a large closed flower.  As they approach it opens, to
reveal the monster Elaine.  FMV

****You feel a pulse.  Previously steady, it suddenly beats faster and faster
until it feels as though the plant will explode.

----As the flower opens Koudelka moves forwards and uses her pendant to deflect
   its power.

----Elaine runs around the walls like a spider and Edward shoots until she
   falls to the ground.

--------------------------
D47# (Without the pendant)
--------------------------
Scene: Without the pendant's protection Elaine blasts them all.  FMV

---------------------------
D48 (The bell tower broken)
---------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=241

Scene: They reach the top of the church and Elaine appears, after chasing them
all the way up.  She emerges, fully a monster, from the plant, and smashes the
bell tower.  FMV

----The final battle begins.

--------------------------------
D49#:  "Let's go home"  (ending)
--------------------------------
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/image/197752.html?gf=251

Scene: The monster Elaine is hovering over them all.  Edward is knocked out
and James and Koudelka are on the ground apparently helpless. James begins to
speak while holding a large cross towards Elaine. FMV

J:  Dear God is this my fault?  Do you blame me?  Are you punishing me now
because the path of my faith was tainted?

----He gets up and moves forwards.

J:  I accept my fate.  If it is your wish then I accept my fate.

He who has an ear let him hear.  If anyone is to go into captivity then
into captivity he will go.  If anyone is to be killed with the sword then
with the sword he will go.

I am what what I am.  I am content with my lot.  I always loved you Elaine.

----James holds up the cross to her.

----Elaine transforms into her true self and whispers.

El: Let's go James.  Let's go home.  I have fond memories of those days.

----There is an explosion.

K:  No.  Flames are coming this way.

E:  Don't be silly.  There must be something we can do.  We'll be fine.
   Trust me.

----Edward picks her up and jumps.

----Next day outside the wall of the ruined Nementon.

R:  In these crazy times young people push themselves too much.

----Edward emerges from the tent.

----Inside the tent Koudelka stretches and smiles.

K:  Ah, the sun came out.  I prefer it a little hazier though.

----Edward smiles and gets on his horse.

K:  Good bye.  We'll probably never even see each other again.

E:  Hey, your nickname Zlato.  What does it mean?  I haven't even asked you
   yet.  Will you tell me?

K:  It...it means...treasure. (said almost demurely)

E:  Oh, that's rich.  I'll remember that.  Treasure.

----He rides away slowly.

R:  Is it OK child?  For you not to follow him?

K:  Yeah, it's OK.  I have a feeling that someday somewhere we'll meet again.

-----------------------------------------
D410#: "Dead people don't speak" (ending)
-----------------------------------------
Scene: As the three stand watching, Elaine begins to explode and disintegrate.
For a brief second she looks at James and her eyes change colour and she
becomes sane.  Then she falls into the fire below.  FMV

----The wind is whistling and it is a grey morning.

R:  I have seen the most interesting happening.  It would be a waste to go back
   to sleep just yet.

----Koudelka and Edward are lying on the ground resting.  They are not
together.  James is staring out to sea.

E:  Hey Koudelka, I wonder what she was about to say?

K:  Dead people don't speak. It is just in your memories.

E:  Oh, is that how you explain what we just saw?

K:  Yes.

----Koudelka stands up.

J:  Memeories.  Somebody told me once that after a loved one's death all we
have left is memories, and these will retain an eternal bond with the dead.

----The sun is rising and sends light across the sea to where James is sitting.

D.  Hiroki Kikuta: an appreciation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.squarehaven.com/news/?id=1206

This site has an excellent review of the work and career of Hiroki Kikuta.
The article referenced is from February 2007.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Useful Links
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sites about the game are few and far between and some may not be active. I've
updated this (May 2009) as a number of fan sites no longer exist, or at least,
not at the original links.

z-o-g.org
This site *had* a vast array of pictures and videos from all the Shadow Hearts
games including Koudelka. Sadly, yet another site that has been discontinued.

http://shnet.t35.com/index.php?page=koudelka/overview
This site had quite a good amount of information about the game including
bosses, magic, and items.  The link is now dead, but it might be around at
another address?

http://www.darkmaterials.com/adobe/fan/kou/index.htm
This site is dedicated to Koudelka and is very nicely done but as yet the
content is incomplete.  It was last updated in February 2006 so is inactive.

http://sh.megaten.net/
This site, also known as Icaro, has background information on all the games
including Koudelka.  Unfortunately the site is no longer updated and the last
activity was in 2005, but the information can still be viewed.

storminheaven.net
This is a site was dedicated to translations of the Japanese Koudelka manga.
Sadly, no longer available.

http://www.levity.com/alchemy/index.html
This is a huge site dedicated to alchemy texts and where further details of the
books James mentions can be found.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13111b.htm
Roger Bacon: a concise review of him and his works is in the Catholic
Encyclopedia.

Even the river mentioned by Koudelka has links to Celtic myth, although to my
knowledge there is no actual river by the name Taliesin, in Wales.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/history/sites/myths_legends/pages/taliesin.shtml

Branwen, cited by Patrick and Roger, is a key character from the Welsh tales of
the Mabinogion.  The story also tells of the Cauldron that could restore the
dead to life.  Branwen is also revered as a goddess.

The Formors are one of the indigenous people's of Ireland according to Celtic
mythology.  This information is thanks to ImaginedReality.
