Chrono Cross Character FAQ v1.1.0.1
by Swuabino
Anyone who bought the Chrono Cross strategy guide from Bradygames might
have noticed two things missing: there was no information on the characters'
Elemental Grids, and it never told when characters learn their Tech skills.
I might be the only person in the whole population of Square-product-hording
zombies that really cares, but none-the-less, I've decided to write an FAQ with
information for each of the games characters, complete with how you get them,
tech skills, weapons, and above all, Elemental Grids.
You'll always be able to find the latest version of this guide at GameFAQ's
in the Chrono Cross section (duh!). Make sure and check there regularly, as I'll
be constantly updating this guide.

///||||:Revision History:||||\\\\
8-22-00 v1.1.0.1 I've added more to the general tutorial as well as a few more
characters. I've also corrected some mistakes and typos, such as how you obtain
Irenes' level 7 tech skill.
8-21-00 v1.1.0.0 I've made a few significant changes and additions to this guide,
all of which I'm sure will help. I've added a table of contents, important info,
how to use this guide, and FAQ's section. Of course, my characters section is
still far from complete, but keep checking, as I'm constantly updating it.
8-18-00 v1.0.0.2 I've added Janice and Karsh, along with some other minor correc-
tions. I've been playing CC a lot, so don't worry that I haven't been adding much.
Once I've beaten it, I'll be working 24-7 on this FAQ.
8-17-00 v1.0.0.1 I've continued work on my character list, and now I'm up to
Irenes. At this rate, it looks like this FAQ will take a L-O-N-G time. Of
course, I AM still in the middle of PLAYING the game! Maybe after I'm done
with that, this'll move a lot faster, and I'll also be able to provide a
little more insite into each of the characters.
8-16-00 v1.0.0.0 I've started the character list after playing the game for
only 2 hours. I'm getting a lot of information from the strategy guide, and
online fan sites, so I can't really confirm a lot of stuff. So far, I've
gotten the main characters done, and I've started on strategies for the others
in alphabetical order up to Draggy. That's all for now.

This is just a bunch of legal wierd crazy mumbo jumbo that I felt I should
put in. If you are not planning on copying my work or e-mailing me or any of that
other good stuff go ahead and skip down to the "General Tutorial" Section.
First of all, if you would like to use this guide on your website or whatever,
that's fine, just as long as you don't modify it (even just to correct a typo), and
you give me credit for it. If you don't, I tend to swell up like a thanksgiving
turkey stuffed with gun powder in the middle of summer in hell, and then I get mad.
Also, please do not distribute this guide for money (unless I'm getting the money).
Second, if you wish to use my work as a basis for your own FAQ or website,
please make sure and give me credit. Just add a little "Other Sources" section or
something, just make sure not to take credit for my work and labor, when all you
have to do is re-word it.
Finally, if there are any typos or some information is wrong, rather than
correct it yourself, please just e-mail me at
[email protected] and I'll try
to get it changed as soon as possible. Thanks!

///||||:General Tutorial:||||\\\\
Chrono Cross is a complex game with over 40 characters, a strange combat
system, and an even stranger experience system. Because of this, many players
(who don't bother with the instruction manual) will be confused at this
Non-Final-Fantasy-Clone RPG. That's what this section is for: to give you a basic
tutorial into the work of art known as Chrono Cross.
I'm not going to repeat stuff right out of the instruction manual that you
didn't bother to read (if that was the case, then why would you want to read THIS?).
Instead, I'm going to give you some information that you'll need to use this
wonderful little guide (in my words).
LESSON 1: THE CRAZY COMBAT SYSTEM THAT IS *GASP* NOT LIKE FINAL FANTASY'S
You know it's true. Just about every RPG ever made is just a rip-off of
Final Fantasy's combat system. Attack, Use An Item, Cast A Spell, or Run Away.
MPs, HPs,Timed-Button Presses out the wazoo. These are all things you'd find in
any RPG from Lunar to (that god awful piece of donkey crap) Legend of Dragoon.
But Square, being the master of the RPG that it is, decided (and a wise decision
it was) to throw out most of these things and come up with something (prepare to
gasp) original. No MPs, timed-button-presses, and retreats without a prayer for
Serge and his buddies. Instead, they'll be doing battle with Stamina Points,
Elemental Grids, and 100% escape rates in a wonderful semi-quasi turn based
environment.
So now you must be totally confused by that last paragraph. What in the
name of Sacred Swuabinos is he talking about? Well, CC's combat system is not
nearly as complicated as it sounds, it just takes a little getting used to (and
it probably helps if you've played the game).
I'll start by explaining Stamina to you. Stamina is basically the
juice that keeps your characters fighting. Without any stamina, a character is
nothing,as he can do nothing in battle. Each person starts the battle with 7
stamina points. These are used for attacking and casting spells, and as long as
a character has one point of stamina left, he can perform an action. But do not
fear when you're character has exhausted his stamina pool! Characters regain
stamina as enemies and fellow charactersfight, so a character in the hole for
stamina will be back fighting in no time.
So you've got all of this stamina, but what good does it do just sitting
there? Aboutas much good as a Playstation power cord with a Playstation! To
ad-lib and old proverb,if you got stamina, spend it! Use it to attack, or cast
spells, just use it! OOOOOOOOOHHH,you don't know how to attack? Well, let's fix
that right up.
When you select the attack option, you'll be prompted to select which enemy
you would like to assault. Pick whichever one tickles your fancy, and then your
character will chargeinto action. Now, a little box with a whole lot of numbers
pops up. This is you're wonderfulattack-o-meter. You have three options: weak,
strong, or fierce attack. Here's how it breaks down:
WEAK attacks use up one stamina point, do little damage, have a high
percent to hit, and add one point to your elemental pool when they are
successful.
STRONG attacks use up two stamina points, do medium damage, have a so-so
chance to hit,and add two points to your elemental pool when successful.
FIERCE attacks use up three stamina points, do heavy damage, have a low
chance to hit, and add three points to your elemental pool if they hit.
So, there's the three types of attacks, but here's another thing that ties them
all together, andadds a bit more strategy to combat. With each successive hit,
your chance of hitting the enemy increases. If a fierce attack connects, your
chances of hitting increase dramatically, but ifa weak attack hits, your chances
will only go up a little. This adds quite a bit of strategy as you decide whether
to go for a fierce attack right away, or build up to it with a series of weaker
blows.
Now you're attacking, and attacking, and attacking, until you think you'd
like to do a fierceattack on your Playstation. You need a little break from all
this attacking. Lucky for you (actuallyyou probably expected this), Square
through in something called MAGIC! Woo-hoo! Of course, theiridea of a magic
system is quite a bit different from any other RPG you've played. Don't be
looking forMPs in this game, because they are nowhere to be found. Instead, CC
employs the elemental system.
With the elemental system, you have to build up your Elemental Level,
essentially your MPs, with a few major differences. Everytime you attack, and it
hits, you will gain points to your Elemental Pool, according to the strength of
your attack. Once you get enough elemental points, you can cast a spell with that
many elemental levels or less, depleting the respective amount of points from
your elemental pool. Plus, casting a spell costs 7 Stamina, so be sure you're
ready before you start casting spells.
When you're flipping through your spell inventory you're bound to notice
character specific tech skills. These are used in the exact same fashion as
spells, only each character has their own unique tech skills. In my guide, I've
included each characters tech skills as well as how many Elemental points they
require to use.
LESSON 2: WHERE'S THE XP?
One of the things that should be very apparent as you start your Chrono
Cross game is that your characters don't have "levels". Before I hear you all
moan about being stuck with the same lousy weak character the whole game, let me
tell you: YOU'RE CHARACTERS STILL GET BETTER! Chrono Cross still has enough
statistics to kill a mathematician, and stat improvements galore, there's just
no artificiall number to tell how good your character is. Instead, after each
battle characters will gain small statistical bonuses for monsters that are on
an equal level as your characters. For example: +2 HP, +1 STR, +2 HIT% among
others. You WILL see your characters get better as the game goes along, and
before you know it, you'll be killing basic monsters in one or two hits with
your power-house fighters.
The second form of leveling up comes with stars, gained after boss fights.
Everytime you fight a "boss" creature you will gain 1 star, and only 1 star, no
more, no less, so don't be asking me what creature gives you the most stars in
the game! As you gain star levels, you'll recieve new slots on your Elemental
Grid. In addition, your maximum stats will increase, and you'll be able to gain
further statistical bonuses from creatures that seemed fruitless to battle. These
stars are also used to cast summons, explained later.
LESSON 3: KISS MY GRIDS!
One of the keys to success in Chrono Cross is mastering the Elemental Grid,
CC's completely customizable system of magic, a cross between FF8's Junction
System, and FF7's Materia Sytem. Like FF7, you'll buy and find magic spells as
you explore the world, and you must equip the spell before you can use it, but
like FF8, each spell has limited use, and you need multiple copies of a spell if
you want to cast it more than once per battle.
The easiest way (and by far, the least effective way) is to use
auto-allocate, which will automatically set up your grids for you, and all you've
gotta do is cast them in battle. Of course, most hard-core RPGers are not going
to want to let some stupid computer do everything for you. Fortunately, CC lets
you get down and dirty, and customize every single bit of your character's spell
casting abilities.
First of all, it's necessary to understand the level of each spell. Every
spell, or element, in CC, has two numbers describing where you can place it on
your grid. The first number is the element's basic level. This number tells you
where the spell will be at it's natural casting level. The second is the range
of where you can place the element in the form of +/- X. This tells you how much
higher or lower on your grid the spell can be placed. For example, an element of
5 +/-2 means that the spell can be equipped on any slot from level 3 to 7. Of
course, you can't just equip an element on any slot without consequence. If an
element is equipped on a slot lower than it's natural, it is less powerful, but
can be cast with less elemental points in battle. On the other hand, if it's
placed on a higher level slot, it will take longer to cast, but will be much more
powerful.
The elemental grid seems quite complex, but with a little practice of NOT
using auto-allocate, you should have it mastered in no time at all.
LESSON 4: LOOK AT ALL THEM PURDY COLORS!
When equipping elements one of the things you'll have to keep in mind is the
color of the element. In the world of Chrono Cross, six schools of magic exist:
black, white, green, yellow, blue, and red. Each of these can be divided into
opposing sets: black vs. white, green vs. yellow, and blue vs. red. When elements
of one color are used against creatures of the opposite color, extra damage is
dealt. You'll find that every character and monster in CC has their own innate
color, so learning to strategically use opposing colors is essential for mastery.
Not only does the color of a spell have an effect on how much damage is dealt
but it also effects another very important part of combat, the field effect. The
field effect is a little picture up at the top of the screen that represents the
last three colors of spells cast. When the field effect becomes all of one color,
spells of that color will do a ton more damage, so make sure to try and keep it in
your favor!
You'll want to keep the field effect on your side for damage purposes, but
also so you can use the games most devestating attacks: summons! Unfortunately,
summons aren't nearly as easy to use as those in the Final Fantasy games. To cast
just one, you have to meet numerous conditions. First, you have to equip the spell
on a character who's innate in the color of the summon. Second, you have to turn
the field effect the color of the summon, an easy task by no means. Third, you need
to have at least one star, as casting a summon uses up one of your stars. Finally,
you just need to cast the spell. There you go, heaps of damage!
BIG 'OL TIP: Here's a simple way to get off summons and it has worked for me
almost 100% of the time. First of all, build up all of your characters to full
elemental level. Now, starting with the summoning character, cast a level one
spell with each of your characters of the respective color. Next, just have your
summoner do a level 1 attack to get your elemental level back up, and then, voila,
toast enemy!
LESSON 5: PACKING HEAT
Like many RPGs, if you don't keep your equipment upgraded, quite frankly,
you're screwed! However, Chrono Cross deals with equipment slightly differetnly
than other RPGs. Rather than buy pre-made weapons, you're going to have to find
all of the materials necessary to construct the weapon, similar to FF8, and then
you're going to need to pay for the forging services.
While most of the materials in the game will come to you pretty easily, the
best equipment, Prism weapons, are going to be a little harder to construct. You'll
have to gather a whole ton of items, including some of the hardes to find in the
game! There's too much to really go into here, so consult Crono228's Prism FAQ at
GameFAQ's for more information.

Chrono Cross is a huge game with over 44 playable characters! Because of
this, you're going to need some help finding them all, and figuring out which one
will best fit in your party. That's what this section is for, to provide you with
all of the information you're going to need to "collect 'em all"!
HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE:
CHARACTER NAME: I you must know...
DESCRIPTION: Tells about the characters history, strengths, and weaknesses.
INNATE ELEMENT: What element the character is best with.
WEAPON: The type of weapon this character can equip
HOW TO OBTAIN: Instructions for getting the character to join your party.
TECH SKILLS: The character's unique abilies. The first column gives the name, the
second column tells what elemental level you need to use it, the third tells what
ability does, and the fourth column tells how or when you gain the ability.
ELEMENTAL GRID: This is a graphic representation of the character's elemental grid.
The first column represents level 1 slots, the second is level 2 slots, and so on.
The numbers inside each slot tell how many stars you need in order to gain that
slot.
________________________________________________________________________________
SERGE:
The main character. He's well... very silent. Towards the beginning of the
game, he gets teleported into a different dimension, that seems similar to his
own world, but is actually quite different. You'll have him for most of the
game, so if you don't like him, learn to live with it!
Innate Element: White
Weapon: Swallow
How to Obtain: Well.... this guys probably the toughest to get, because
he's the only character that really requires physical ability. To get him, you
half to walk up to your Playstation, put the first disc in, and turn the power
on. You might need a cool shower afterwards...

FUNGUY:
Super Mario's Toad on steroids. He's a giant walking, talking mushroom.
He joins your party to find some way to turn himself back into a normal
person.
Innate Element: Yellow
Weapon: Axe or Hammer
How to Obtain: There are two ways to get Funguy depending on what you
did during the Viper Mansion sequence. First, find the guy in the cave
under the waterfall in Home World's Shadow Forest. Then go through the
passage to Viper Mansion. Here's the split part:
1. If you rolled a boulder to stop the insects during the Mansion sequence,
then you'll have to chase an insect through a smaller hole to the right side
of the screen.
2. If you didn't roll the boulder, you'll need to battle a Wraith near
the hole.
After this, a guy will give you a Mushroom, which you need to give to the
man in the cave behind the waterfall. After a short little sequence, Funguy
will join your party.

BRADYGAMES OFFICIAL STRATEGY GUIDE- My main source of information for Chrono
Cross. I haven't quite finished the game, so right now, I'm using their info
as a basis for my FAQ. The Strategy Guide's really good, and anyone who wants
to maximize their Chrono Cross experience should probably check it out.
JEREMY PARISH (AKA TOASTYFROG0'S CHRONO CROSS FAQ- Next to the Official
Strategy Guide, this is the best Walktrough you'll find. I haven't really
been using info from it, as it hasn't been updated for the English version of
CC yet, but many of you who don't have 15 bucks to spend on a guide will find
it extremely helpful. Not to mention that Toasty Frog just so happens to be
one of the funniest writers I've ever read. You can find this one at GameFAQ's.
CB'S CHARACTER FAQ- Until I get mine completely finished, this is going to be your
best source of info for character descriptions and evaluations. Make sure and
check it out at GameFAQ's.
SQUARESOFT- If you don't know who this is, then why, for the love of all things
holy, are you reading this? If you just enjoy reading about characters from
random games you've never heard of made by companies you've never heard of,
you're either my dad, or a very, very sad person. Anyway, Square made Chrono
Cross, and I love them for that. So remember, the next time you see Hironobu
Sakaguchi, give him a big hug for me!
