01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'China' for the Playstation, an adventure game released by Cyro
Interactive in 1999. It was also released on the PC and is sometimes known as
'China: The Forbidden City' or just 'The Forbidden City' depending on the
country it is published in or perhaps a re-release title. This game is only
available in Europe.
Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
Controls:
`````````
These are descriptions of the Playstation controls:
Use X to select, O to see the inventory screen which also has a link to the map
(COMPASS) and the documentation (SCROLL). There is also an EYE button which
means you can pick up an item and drop it on here for a closer look. The SWIRL
always returns to the game. Direction buttons move the cursor. The other
buttons on the controller are not used.
This game has mouse support! When plugged in you can control your cursor with
the mouse and left click to interact, well, like on the PC. Right click shows
the inventory screen as if pressing O.
The PC controls are just the mouse but I have not tested it. The game is very
old and was designed for Windows 98 and getting it to run now is a little
tricky. Do not ask me for technical support. There are surely some sites on
the web that can give you better support.
Main Menu:
``````````
* Start the game
* Load a game
* Resume the game
* Save the game
* Visit the site
* Consult the documentation
* Options
* Credits
These are mainly obvious; "Visit the site" means the Forbidden City site. You
can freely walk around without any interaction. Consulting the documentation is
important for solving riddles if you do not use the walkthrough. Resuming a
game is if you come to this menu while you still play, else you have to load a
game from the memory card.
Options contains settings for the language, music, sound effect & voice levels,
subtitles on/off and the Omni3D speed. The latter is for looking around in a
location. It may appear too fast for your cursor. Do not forget to save the
setup if you want to make changes, and load when you switch the machine back on.
Map:
````
This is a rough map of the important areas in the game. The Forbidden City is
large but only very few locations are actually used in the game. You can try to
find this yourself and my pointers below are only for the rough area of the map
where you should find a little hand icon which enables you traverse there. This
section of the map is the central area below the Imperial Gardens. Most of the
southern and edges of the map are useless for this game.
03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300
===============================================================================
After the introduction you start out near the Room of Spiritual Nourishment.
Turn right, go forward and enter the first door to the right. This is Chief
Eunuch Ma's office and you will come back here many times. Talk to the Chief Ma
and then turn around and talk to Eunuch Chou.
Click on the map icon in the inventory to see the Forbidden City outline. This
map is hard to navigate and made worse by so many useless locations. Use the
map in this guide to find the Office of the Internal Petitions.
Go inside and turn slightly left where you can continue further into the room.
Turn to your right to find Director Li. You always have to report to him after
you find some clues and this is the only desk in this office you report to.
Talking to him gives you the Imperial Mandate 2 for further investigation. This
enables you entry to the Imperial Gardens which is where you are heading next.
Find it on the map and talk to the eunuch at the gate. Show him the mandate for
entry. Walk towards the crowd and talk to the Dowager Empress. You receive two
items here. Read the letter and then talk to the Dowager Empress again.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, report to Director Li about this find.
Your investigation continues. Talk to Master Wei at the Upper Study of the
Imperial Princes and then proceed to he Chief Eunuch's office. Talk to Chief Ma
twice and then access Wang's furniture on the right. Open the cabinets for a
hammer, chisel and screwdriver. Using they key you got from the Empress you can
open the bottom drawer and get a statue.
This puzzle, and like most puzzles, is solved by the clues left by Wang. Since
this is a solve I will already give you the solution: Click the center-most
jewels in the statue's base which consists of three red ones and two blue ones.
Grab the letters which is the first confession and a clue to the second. When
you leave the room you will run into Councilor Yu. Just follow the story for
now.
(You can show the letter to Director Li at the Office of the Internal Petitions
but I think this is optional.) Go to see Master Wei at the Upper Study of the
Imperial Princes and show him the 2nd clue. Turn left, walk forward and look at
the Go board. From the second clue you know that the Chinese character "center"
should be on the board. The character is in the top right corner. Basically
click on the Go nodes in the middle column and then add a square near the top
like this:
. * . .
* * * .
* * * .
. * . .
. * . .
Take the two letters as usual. Show the letter to Director Li at the Office of
the Internal Petitions.
At Chief's Eunuch's Office you can talk to Ma and show him the 2nd confession.
He will hint you where to go next. Talk to Master Wei at the Upper Study of the
Imperial Princes and he will give you an even better hint. Go to your office
at the Imperial House (go inside, turn left and enter the office) and walk to
the back to find the ledgers. The four ledgers are the list which you want to
take.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, report to Director Li about the list
for an upgrade in the Imperial Mandate. Your next location is a little harder
to find since the entrance is not where you expect. Go to where the gate to the
Imperial Garden is north but instead you want to go east. Talk to the eunuch in
front of the gate and show him the mandate. Enter this palace and walk around
that partition so that you face north again (in other words: right, left,
forward). Talk to Chief Eunuch Lu and give him the list. When he brings out the
gifts you only care about the left one. Use the screwdriver on the box to
reveal a secret bottom. Take the original works and leave.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, show the 2nd confession to Director Li
about the works and then talk to Master Wei at the Upper Study of the Imperial
Princes. You may now use the equipment. Use the original works on the table.
Take the brush in the bottom right corner and use it on the purple bowl, then
on the original works.
Use the map to find the Gate of Celestial Purity and walk forward to the large
door. Inspect it to find the left door will give you the icon to interact with
it at one of the large knobs (fifth from the right, bottom row). Use the chisel
on the knob and then use the hammer on the chisel. Interact with the cylinder
and change all of them to the character for "Affix the seal". Take the letters.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, show the 3rd confession to Director
Li. Show the 3rd confession to Master Wei at the Upper Study of the Imperial
Princes to find out where the seals are kept. Go see Chief Eunuch Ma only to
find he is missing. Talk to Chou behind you to find he just left. You have to
follow this sequence or else you cannot find Ma in the end. Go outside and
turn left to the guards. Talk to them to find where Ma went. Turn right, go
forward thrice, left, forward, right and enter the door. Turn around and talk
to the guard. Turn left, forward, right and talk to the guard. Into the gate,
turn around and talk to the guard here as well. Turn around and go forward
twice to be in the center of the large yard. Turn left and walk towards the
golden vases. You should now be able to go there for a scene.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, show the seals to Director Li. This
nets you Imperial Mandate 4. Your next destination is the Halls of Greater
Fertility. This is accessible on the map directly but you can go to the
area south of the Imperial Gardens and walk through the gates. Check the map
in this guide for help.
Once at the gate, show the mandate to the guard to be allowed through. Inside,
go up the stairs and depending on from where you entered this place you need to
go towards the middle where you can enter the hall. Talk to Chief Eunuch Wen
on the right and give the stamps to the left guy.
This next puzzle is really easy but the controls are not clear at first. Pick
up a stamp (chop) to see its base. Use it on the ink pad (in red), then pick
up the stamp and make an imprint at the matching spot. When you have all three
done you get some wax.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, show the wax to Director Yang (where
Li used to be). Return to the Halls of Greater Fertility (there is a shortcut
now) and talk the eunuch. Exit the hall, turn left, forward, left, forward,
right, go down the stairs, turn around and enter the right small building.
Click on the chest in Wen's room twice to reveal a panel. Use the chisel on
the floor panel to remove it. Select the coins to return everything back to
normal. Try to leave for a scene.
Leave the room, go through the gate in front of you and then turn slightly
left, continue forward and enter the gate here. Go forward again for another
scene.
Turn right and look at the bars on the window. Use the screwdriver on all four
sides to remove the edges. You will hear a sound when this has been done. Use
the screwdriver on the box for a puzzle. Your aim is to match up East, Dragon
and Green, the click the following colors in this order: Yellow, Gray, Purple,
Blue. Pick up the letters. Optionally you can go outside and talk to the
concubines.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, talk to Director Yang. Go to the
Palace of Concubines in the northeast as before. You still have to talk to the
guard outside. Once you get through, turn right and go forward to find another
eunuch. Talk to him to find out where to go next.
That was, to go to the Imperial House. You will see a scene once you enter.
Return to the Palace of Concubines and go left this time. Forward and right you
will see a large kettle. Push the rectangle in the base and use the chisel to
remove the panel. Take the key. Go to the opposite house and talk to the eunuch
as you did just a few minute ago. Once inside the house, talk to Hua Bao. Use
her blank paper on the candle on your right. This clue is needed to solve the
next puzzle. Back outside you will find this tree as seen in the clue just now
and you can now interact with the base to remove the panel. Use the key to open
it up. Take the seals and use them on the ink stamp as before. In the end you
will only have seals left in your inventory.
At the Office of the Internal Petitions, talk to Director Yang. Return to the
Concubine quarters and talk to the eunuch again to enter. Inside, turn left to
find Lady Shouxiu. Talk to her of course. Turn around and find a bamboo tree.
It has four stumps with zodiac animals. You can cycle through the animals on
each bit. Your aim is to only want real zodiac animals. The stumps should have:
Serpent Tiger Hare Rat
Cockerel Dog Ox Dragon
Horse Monkey Goat
Wild Boar
Pick up the document inside. After some scenes, return to Imperial House and
enter it. Turn right to Superintendent Da's office for another scene. Use the
hammer on him. Check out the clock and solve the puzzle. This is kind of hard
to see (especially on the Playstation, maybe slightly better on the PC) but you
want to set the large dial at the top to have the large dial point to five and
the small pointer to eight. The bottom left dial needs to point to three and
the bottom right to nine. (Actually this does not fit to the hint given on the
director's desk and maybe this is bugged but it worked for me.) Take the
letters.
For your last destination you want to go very far south to the Room of Supreme
Harmony. Enter and go forward towards the throne. Touch it and open the panel.
Touch the machine again to begin the last puzzle. Follow these steps to disarm
the device:
1. Remove the four bars outside the machine, then touch the machine again
2. Remove the gear just left of the turquoise vial in the middle
3. Remove the gear at the top
4. Use the screwdriver on the tubes attached to the turquoise vials (two)
5. Use the screwdriver on the tubes below the middle gear
6. Use the screwdriver on the metal bar at the right tube
7. Remove the right tube
8. Use the screwdriver on the right tube
9. Remove the left tube
X. Click anywhere to close up this game.
The End
===============================================================================
XX.) FAQ GXX00
===============================================================================
Q) Is this better on the PC or Playstation?
A) Honestly I bet 98% of people will say PC but seeing that this is kind of
tricky to get running on the PC these days (it was released for Windows 98)
I find it easier to just play on the Playstation. Sure the graphics look
poor but they are poor on the PC as well. Only for the puzzles it is quite
annoying having low quality images.
Q) Does the game support the mouse?
A) As described in the control section, mention in the game's manual AND
pointed out on the box, yes!
Q) Are there similar games like this?
A) Quite a few, as if Cyro went through the world's cultures for some adventure
games. Try Egypt, Egypt II, Inca or maybe Atlantis.
