2.MAKING A GREAT ECONOMY

This is an important section because in almost every mission I will be
telling you to “make an economy”.  Here I will explain how to do that,
rather than re-explain it in every mission.

First of all, there are 5 resources in Armada 2: Dilithium, Metal, Latinum,
Crew, and Officers.  Each is vital is some form or another to MOST of the
races you will play.  (Special exceptions are the Borg and Species 8472).

Dilithium is mined from blue dilithium moons by building a mining station
and having mining ships collect it.  There are also purple moons.  These are
great because they NEVER run out of dilithium.  If you find one, secure it
immediately!  This is especially important in multiplayer games and missions
with few resources.  Dilithium is used mainly as a power source for
starships and a few other buildings.

Metal is collected from planets and smaller planetoids.  To harvest it you
must build an orbital facility around the planet.  After that it will
automatically start collecting metal forever.  Once the planet runs out of
its metal supply, however, only small amounts will be added to your stock.
You would be wise to find another source because metal is a VERY important
resource.  You need it for almost every starship and building (again,
excluding 8472) and it usually takes a lot.

Latinum is by far the most useful resource.  You can get latinum in several
ways.  You can mine it from a latinum nebula by sending a mining ship until
it is gone.  You can also build a few trading stations and send cargo ships
back and forth which generates latinum.  Also, if you have a trading station
the Ferengi will stop by every so often and trade things and at no cost to
you will give you latinum.  Latinum is basically good for one thing, buying
materials.  Low on dilithium?  Buy it with latinum at your trading station.
Running out of metal?  Buy it.  It’s usually not a good idea to get into a
territory war over just a latinum nebula though unless you’re sure you can
win or you really need it.

Crew comes from star bases and colonized planets.  The easy way to get crew
is to build a star base.  You will automatically start receiving crew.  Star
bases can only hold so much, though, and sometimes building another just
isn’t practical.  The other option is colonizing a planet with a colony
ship.  You can build those at shipyards.  You can even colonize planets that
are being mined for metal!  The only planets you can colonize, though, are
Class M, L, and J.  None of the others can support life.  Once you colonize
a planet, crew begins slowing adding to your resource pool.  You MUST have
crew to build ships and most buildings.  The amount of crew needed depends
on the size of the ship or building.  You will run out of crew faster than
anything else not only because of the amount needed for things, but because
you can’t trade latinum for them.

You get officers the same way you get crew.  It is almost impossible to run
out of officers, since you rarely need more than 10 for anything, so don’t
worry about this too much.

Now, lets get down to making the economy.  Throughout this walkthrough you
will see the phrase “Make your economy”.  This is what I mean by that
phrase, so refer to this when you need to.  It was my way of making my job
easier (and to take up less space in the actually mission walkthroughs).

Usually when a mission starts you will be close to at least a dilithium moon
and a planet of some kind.  You may have a few latinum nebulae lying around
as well.  Sometimes these things aren’t immediately visible but are usually
within a few grid spaces of your current area.  Depending on the mission,
you may or may not start with any buildings.  For the purposes of this
section, I will assume you have no buildings (if you do, just skip the
sections that tell you to build them).

The first thing you should always do is take a look at where you are.  What
resources do you have that you can see?  It’s usually a good idea to take a
warp-capable ship and take a look at your surrounding area.  Meanwhile, you
need to build a star base.  Where should you place it?  Where ever you want
really.  But if there is some latinum around, place it close to that because
the mining ships always return latinum to star bases.  Most missions start
you with two construction ships so while your star base is building you need
to take your other ship and build a mining station very close to a dilithium
moon.  It will take a bit for these things to finish so in the meanwhile
explore with other ships if possible.  When the star base and mining station
finish, immediately build 2 construction ships and 4 mining ships.  The
mining station automatically produces one mining ship to get started on the
dilithium moon.  Also at this point take one construction ship and build a
shipyard and take the other and build an orbital station around a planet.
By this time those ships should be finished.  Take two of the mining ships
and have them work on the moon, take the other two and have them collect
latinum.  Have one of your new construction ships build a research facility
and the other build a trading station.  When all four of those buildings
finish, build several Akira ships for defense (unless you started with
enough ships) and build a colony ship.  Colonize the planet being mined for
metal if possible.  Now you’ve got a goop jump-start on the economy.  The
next order of business is expanding.  You’ve got to expand to survive in
Armada 2.  Scout around for moons and planets and send construction ships
with a few escorts over to them.  Just build like you did back at home base.
 See how easy it was to do this?  That’s all there is to getting a good
economy going!


3.FEDERATION CAMPAIGN

MISSION ONE:  “INVASION”
Objectives:
The Enterprise Must Survive
Destroy all Borg in sector.
Colonize Regula 2


You start with a few Akira, Steamrunner and one Galaxy class vessels, as
well the Enterprise.  Obviously you don’t want that to get blown up.  First
thing to do is build a mining station by one of the two dilithium moons
visible.  While one construction ship works on that, use the other to build
a research facility (for no other reason than to satisfy the mission
objectives).  You will be occasionally attacked by scattered Borg vessels
throughout the mission but they don’t pose much of a threat.  For the most
part the Enterprise can handle them all.  Once both your buildings are
finished use one construction ship and build a SECOND mining station near
the other moon.  Take the left over construction ship and have it build
orbital station around the planet north of your starting point (You will
have to explore up there a bit to find it, but it won’t take long).
Meanwhile, build two more construction ships and two more mining ships and a
colony ship.  Also at this point start building Akira Class ships like a
madman; don’t even bother with the other classes.  Take your new colony ship
with an escort (One Akira and the Galaxy Class is fine) a little northeast
to find the planet you are supposed to colonize, Regula 2.  Go ahead and do
it.  Back at base, use your two new construction ships to build some phaser
cannons and the two mining ships to mine the moons (duh).  You may want to
build a second shipyard but its up to you.

The Borg have 3 real bases, each in the other 3 corners of the map.  Once
you have a sizable group of Akira’s (about 30 or so) head up to the top left
corner and blow everything up.  Then basically it’s just systematic from
here.  Go through to the other bases and destroy everything, replacing ships
as needed.  You also need to capture the Borg planet at the top right of the
map.  Use the Enterprise or the Galaxy class vessel to open fire on the
planet, then colonize it with a new colony ship.  After you do all this and
chase down any remaining ships you win the mission!


MISSION TWO: “LIFELINES”
Objectives:
Make Contact with the Trade Station
Trade 1500 Latinum, Metal and Dilithium to the station
Do not let either station be destroyed

All right, this one is decidedly harder than the last mission (of course,
that’s the point!) but it’s still fairly easy.  First thing build several
mining ships and put half of them to work on the moon and the other half on
the latinum nebulae south of you.  You are also going to need several trade
ships (you can do the mission with just the one you start with but it will
take FOREVER).  Build an orbital platform around the planet to the north and
construct a few phaser cannons.  Colonize it as well.  Build a science
station and a research facility as well.  After they finish start building
Akira Class vessels like crazy (just like last mission, you’re going to
learn to love these suckers).  You may want to build another shipyard to
speed up the process.  Before you head for the other base you need these
ships:  9 cargo ships, and 15 to 20 Akira Class ships.

First, fill 3 cargo ships with latinum, 3 with metal, and 3 with dilithium.
Second, take your Akira’s and head east to take out the small Borg base
between you and the other star base.  It’s a pushover so don’t worry.  Now
take your cargo ships and have them follow your Akira’s and press on to the
base.  Now just trade all the goods and that’s it!

Note:  There is a Borg base in the southeast corner.  DO NOT go to it, you
will get your butt kicked and then they will counter-attack, making this
mission a lot harder.  If you take too long on this mission (more than about
20 minutes) the Borg will grow impatient and send about 10 cubes up to blow
you up.  It’ll work.

MISSION THREE: “RECOVERY”

This mission is mostly about staying alive with a very short ship-capturing
requirement tacked on at the end.  As such, this is pretty straightforward.
First, take a few ships and get over to the research facility that it under
attack and take out its assailant.  Now you’re pretty much free for a while.
 I don’t recommend exploring at this point, but you can if you want later.
Next, just build every building available.  Colonize, mine and collect metal
as well.  You should know how to get your economy pumping by now.  You may
want to save some of those derelict ships.  I suggest at least saving the
Sovereign Class ships (after all, they kick the most butt), but if you want
to, go ahead and get the others too.  To do it, take a construction ship
over to one of them and activate it’s tractor beam.  Then you can pull the
ship back to the star base and re-crew it.  (Alternatively, you can send a
ship over to a derelict one and transport over some of its crew to the
other).  Meanwhile, be upgrading and building ships like mad, mostly Akira
Class of course.  Make sure to also build torpedo cannons around your base
as soon as they are available.

The Borg will occasionally attack you, with each wave getting a little
stronger.  As long as you have some ships around or torpedo cannons it’s
nothing to worry about.  After a while you will get a message about a
federation ship passing through the sector that is under the control of the
Borg.  You have to recapture that ship.  You can tell where it is by looking
on the mini-map and every few seconds a white ring with appear and give you
its location.  It has a large Borg escort with it so watch out.  Take about
8 Akira Classes to intercept the convoy.  First destroy the guarding ships
and then star shooting at the Federation ship but DO NOT LET IT BE
DESTROYED.  You only need to disable its shields, then transport over crew
from your 8 Akira ships until you take it over.  There you have it, you win
the mission!

MISSION FOUR: “ALONG THE NEUTRAL ZONE”

This is pretty much your basic “search and destroy” mission.  As always, get
that economy pumping and get to building everything you can.  The game wants
to frighten you into thinking the Romulans are going to be one of your
problems in this mission.  But as long as you down cross into the zone, you
won’t hear a peep out of them.  Just build all the buildings you can start
building a lot of torpedo turrets for defense.  Your new best friend in this
mission is the Galaxy-Class starship, which is so much sweeter than the
Akira, mostly because it has the ability to split into two sections and
fight!  So whereas you’ve been building tons of Akira Class ships in the
previous missions, you need only worry about Galaxy Class for now.  This
mission is so easy; just build a huge amount of Galaxy ships (about 30 or
so) and go kick some butt.  Viola!  You win!
