-I.------------------------ INTRODUCTION ----------------------------
=======================================================================
This document is a complete walkthrough for the classic Sierra
adventure game "Space Quest: The Sarien Encounter".
In this game you play as Roger Wilco, the janitor of the Starship
Arcada. Your goal is to save yourself and maybe the rest of the world
from the Sariens. When you follow this walkthrough, you have to do each
instruction I give, and in the order I give them.
Remember this as you read the walkthrough itself. All the words in
parenthesis () are not commands, but just what you should see on screen
or things you have just done. Everything not in parenthesis is a
command, and is something you must do.
When I use the term "near side", I mean stuff in the foreground. When I
say "far side of the screen", I mean stuff in the background.
Anything you see in all capitals is what you have to type into the
computer. Example: Walk up to giant head and type ENTER HEAD. That
means you have to type those words exactly into the game. Although this
game understands a lot of words, sometimes you can type in the simplest
thing and the game has no idea what you are talking about. So follow
each instruction exactly as you read it.
=======================================================================
-II.---------------------- THE STORY SO FAR -------------------------
=======================================================================
*This little is story is courtesy of the game's instruction manual,
just so it's clear that these are not my lame jokes...
Light-years from this solar system exists a galaxy known as Earnon.
Though the inhabitants of this galaxy have lived in peace and
prosperity for many decades, events have been observed recently which
indicate that life won't be so rosy in the future. The galactic
government has become corrupt and unresponsive. Young Earnonians have
grown rebellious and hostile. Lunatics and sub-Delta morons have taken
control of the TV networks (actually, this happened centuries ago, but
nobody noticed until just recently). Worst of all the sun, on which the
earthlike planet Xenon relies for the building blocks of life, is
dying. Xenon's very basics of life are threatened. Xenon scientists
predict that only certain insect species and most human resource
professionals will survive the resulting ice age.
So with what amounted to a do-or-die dilemma, the most talented minds
of the planet went to work. The result was a radical design for
something called the Star Generator (not to be confused with the
William Morris Agency), a device capable of turning a lifeless planet
into a raging ball of fire. Or the other way around. Nobody was quite
sure, since it had never actually been tested.
The development team for the Star Generator project was stationed
aboard the spacelab Arcada and sent to the outer edge of Earnon to
further its research. Here's where you come in. You serve as a member
of the crew of the Arcada...as a janitor. That's right, a janitor - and
not a very good one. You'd certainly have been sacked and replaced were
the Arcada not millions of kilometers from Xenon. Anyway, after months
of development and testing, the mission has been completed. Although
still in the experimental stages, the Star Generator appears to be
fully operational. The good news is flashed back to Xenon as the crew
of the Arcada prepares for the trip home.
But the news does not travel far before it reaches unintended ears.
Monitoring the Arcada's transmissions are Sariens, space thugs who
cruise the galaxies wreaking havoc by exposing aerosol cans to open
flame or fire. The Sarien's immediate intent it to capture the Star
Generator and bring it aboard their battle cruiser Deltaur. With the
Star Generator in their possession, the Sariens would have the ultimate
weapon with which to terrorize the universe and gain sweet revenge
against a civilization which ostracized them so long ago. They'd also
get invited to better parties.
As your adventure begins, you are currently conduction one of your
famous on-shift naps in the janitorial storage closet. You arise
slightly annoyed at the commotion which has awakened you so rudely.
This does not amuse you as you had just drifted off to sleep. The alarm
system is activated, indicating that the Arcada is under attack.
When the commotion dies down you take a look outside. Your eyes fall
upon a grisly sight. Several of our fellow crew members' bodies lie
strewn about the ship, their posture indicating a total unwillingness
to get up and keep living.
Although you aren't used to doing a lot of thinking, your brain cells
kick into high gear. What a mess! How am I gonna get those bloodstains
off the floor? In the midst of this immensely deep thought (well, deep
for YOU) you are startled into serious reality when you hear a laser
blast followed quite closely by a sickening scream. You briefly
consider taking another nap, but it finally sinks it that YOU might be
in danger as well. This will never do.
=======================================================================
-III.----------------------- THE CONTROLS ---------------------------
=======================================================================
This game uses a "parser interface", which means you have to tell the
game exactly what to do via typing in commands. When you hit any letter
of the alphabet, a small white box will appear on screen. In that box
you type what you want the character to do. If you want to look around,
you type LOOK and press enter.
Moving with the arrow keys is pretty self-explanatory but just incase,
=-Right Direction Key-=
Starts Roger walking toward the right side of the screen.
=-Left Direction Key-=
Starts Roger walking toward the left side of the screen.
=-Up Direction Key
Starts Roger walking toward the top of the screen.
=-Down Direction Key-=
Starts Roger walking toward the bottom of the screen.
To stop walking, just press the key direction key again.
Here are some more commands you'll need to know:
=-ESC-=
Brings up the menu bar at the top of the screen, this action also
pauses the game.
=-F1-=
Brings up a little help menu.
=-F2-=
Brings up the sound controls.
=-F3-=
Brings up the last thing you typed in a white text box.
=-F5-=
Brings up the Save Game menu.
=-F7-=
Brings up the Restore Game menu.
=-F9-=
Brings up the Restart Game menu.
=-TAB-=
Brings up the Inventory screen.
=-Ctrl+J-=
Sets up your joystick.
=-Ctrl+R-=
Toggles your monitor settings.
=-Alt+Z-=
Quits the game.
=======================================================================
-IV.---------------------- THE WALKTHROUGH --------------------------
=======================================================================
Remember, save early and save often...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
1. Aboard the Spaceship Arcada
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(This level begins with Roger Wilco, you, stumbling out of a broom
closet. Red lights flashing on each floor act as a constant reminder to
keep moving. You have to get off of this ship before it blows up, while
at the same time keeping an eye out for the evil Sarien invaders. Lucky
for you, I know the way out.)
Walk left three screens.
Type SEARCH BODY
Type TAKE KEYCARD
Go right two screens and wait a few seconds inside of this room.
(After while, an injured old man will stumble through the door on the
right and slump down on the floor.)
Type LOOK AT MAN
(The old man will tell you that the ship is under attack and the Star
Generator project is in jeopardy. He advises you to escape as soon as
possible, and then with his last breath points to the shelf behind you
and says "astral body".)
Walk up to the blue and purple robot and type LOOK AT SCREEN.
(You'll get a view of the screen of the console, and be asked to name a
title.)
Type ASTRAL BODY into the computer and press ENTER.
(The robot will search the records for that cartridge, and then
retrieve it for you)
Type TAKE CARTRIDGE
Walk left one screen and enter the elevator.
Once on the lower floor, walk right one screen and enter the elevator.
Once you get to the bottom floor, walk right one screen.
Walk up to the control panel on the upper right.
Type PRESS OPEN BAY DOOR
Go right one screen and approach the panel to the left of the door.
Type USE KEYCARD
Enter the door to your right.
In this room, walk up to the two small white squares on the back wall.
Type PRESS LEFT BUTTON
Type GET THE GADGET
(You'll pick up a small, mysterious device)
Type PRESS RIGHT BUTTON
Type PICK UP SUIT
(You are now wearing a space suit, and you've put your old janitor's
clothes in their place in the closet)
Walk up to the small control panel on the bottom of the screen.
Type PUSH AIRLOCK BUTTON
Walk through the door on the left that you just opened.
Walk up to the small control panel you see just as you enter this room
and type PUSH PLATFORM BUTTON
Walk up to the ship you just brought up and type ENTER POD
(You are now seated in the small escape pod, with the camera moving to
a behind-the-head view)
Type BUCKLE SEAT BELT
Type PRESS POWER BUTTON
Type PRESS AUTONAV BUTTON
Type PULL THROTTLE
(You have turned on the auto-nav, so now the navigational computer will
take you to the nearest planet. Congratulations you have escaped the
Starship Arcada, and have started your descent onto the desert planet
of Kerona.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2. The Planet of Kerona
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(Now you find yourself sitting in the cockpit of your once great escape
pod. All of the controls are damaged beyond repair, and the windshield
is shattered into a million pieces. It looks like its first space
voyage was also its last. Ashes to ashes, and dust to dust, we just
have to move on with our lives. Take note that this planet is very dry
and hot, so Roger will get thirsty very easily. Whenever the game talks
about Roger being dry, type DRINK WATER. You'll die if you don't!)
Type PICK UP KIT
Type UNBUCKLE SEATBELT
Type GET OUT
Walk up to the front of the crashed pod and type PICK UP GLASS
(You just picked up a piece of highly reflective glass from the
shattered remains of the windshield)
Walk right three screens.
On the third screen, step up onto the yellow stone ramp and go up one
screen.
(About halfway up the ramp, a spider droid will drop down from the sky
and begin moving around. This robot was send down to find you and
destroy you. It should be avoided at all costs.)
Take the ramp left on the second screen up.
Walk across the fragile bridge and stop at the large round brown
object.
Type PUSH ROCK when the robot is on the third brown line from the
bottom of the screen.
(You'll destroy the robot for good. It's not necessary to complete the
game, but it is the only way to get 100% of the points. Also it's one
less thing for Roger to worry about.)
Follow the yellow ramp left one, up one, and right two.
When you come to the dead end, step underneath the broken archway.
(You'll suddenly take a ride down a mysterious elevator shaft, and into
a subterranean cavern.)
Step out of the elevator and over to the upper area of the screen.
Type PICK UP ROCK
Go left one screen.
(In his room you see a large purple metal grate, followed by steam
coming from a stalagmite. There is a monster hiding just under the
grate, and he'll grab you in you step onto it. Luckily, the way around
this problem is really simple.)
Walk as far up to the north rock wall as possible, and then go left.
(You'll stay just out of reach of the monster's green tentacles)
Now, walk up to the steaming rock and type PUT ROCK IN HOLE
(The door to the left of you will open)
Walk through the door you just opened.
From here, you have to go to the very top of the screen, and then go
straight left to move to the next screen.
Walk up to the red and white light beams, but DO NOT go through them.
Instead, type PUT GLASS IN BEAMS.
(The reflective surface of the glass reflected the lasers onto their
own generators, completely destroying the device and clearing the path
for you.)
Now, walk up the stone ramp and right two screens.
(To make it past the dripping acid, stay as close to the upper rock
wall as possible.)
Type TURN ON GADGET, and then walk right one more screen.
(This gadget will translate the alien language you will hear in the
next room)
(Now you find yourself in a dark room with a large sinister looking
head. Just listen to what he has to say. Your mission is to kill the
Orat, and bring back some evidence you got the job done. With your
mission clearly laid out, you tumble out of the cave and back to the
sandy surface)
Now, walk down the yellow stone ramp the same way you came up it.
When you reach the bottom, walk up one screen.
Walk right one screen into the large black cave.
Quickly type THROW WATER AT ORAT
(You throw the canister at him, and he swallows it. The canister is
pressurized, so it's puncture causes a massive explosion inside his
stomach. Now he's dead, and you can move on.)
Walk over to the small orange object on the right side of the screen
and type PICK UP PART
Walk left one screen to exit the cave.
Walk down one screen, and then climb onto and go back up the yellow
stone ramp.
Step under the broken archway again so you can re-enter the underground
cavern.
Once down there, return to the room with the huge alien head the same
way you got there the first time.
(The lasers are gone, but the acid drops are still there so be careful)
When you get to the room with the big head, type DROP PART
When the large white triangle comes into view, walk into it.
(You now see the true nature of the mysterious being; it's just a
hologram. You are now in the engine room of the underground structure.
There is a computer console in here, and to you right is the
transportation you were promised.)
Walk up to the computer console that is straight ahead.
Type PUT CARTRIDGE IN SLOT
(You'll finally be treated to the information stored in the cartridge.
It concerns the Star Generator, and I've re-printed the message below
incase you missed any of it.)
_____________________________________________________________________
Whoever shall read this: My name is Dr. Slash Vohaul, I am a
scientist with The Star Generator Project aboard the Starlab Arcada.
We have just successfully completed development an testing of the
Star Generator. During this time I have come to believe that our
progress has been monitored by others. I fear that the Sariens may
have learned of our mission.
If my fears prove true, The Star Generator and the people of our
universe are in serious jeopardy. The Star Generator is a miraculous
device. Used as intended, it will help preserve life for eons to
come. Used as a device of evil, it would cause the destruction of
millions of lives and enslave all who oppose the Sariens.
Encoded within this cartridge are all the plans and specifications
for the Star Generator. Should any disaster befall the Star
Generator, scientists would be able to create a duplicate of the
Star Generator with this information.
Please guard it with your life and return it to the Xenon ruling
body as quickly as possible.
Important Note:
The Star Generator is capable of self-destruction. This was
introduced to the system as a precaution. To activate it one must
enter the code 6858.
A five-minute time will begin to count down. Beware, anyone within
5 kilometers of the Star Generator will be in danger once the timer
has been initiated. Please be careful and GOOD LUCK!
_____________________________________________________________________
When you're done reading it, type TAKE CARTRIDGE
Now, walk over to the small sand skimmer on the right side of the
screen.
Type GET IN SKIMMER
Type TURN KEY
(Now you start your adventure-filled ride to the Ulence Flats. The
ground is littered with rocks, which will damage the skimmer if you hit
them. So, I would suggest setting the game speed to slow to make it as
easy as possible.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
3. The Settlement on the Ulence Flats
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(After your wild boulder-filled ride through the desert you finally
reach your destination, the Ulence Flats. You pull up outside a local
bar to your right, and to your left is what appears to be a used
spaceship store. Maybe they can find a more permanent solution to your
transportation problem.)
Type GET OUT OF SKIMMER
Type Get KEY
(Taking the key out of the ignition will prevent it from being stolen.
And just after you do this, a man will walk up and make you an offer on
your sand skimmer.)
Type NO to refuse his first offer.
(Don't worry, his next one will be better.)
Walk left one screen, and then right one screen to return to your
skimmer.
(The man will once again walk up to you and make a final offer for your
skimmer.)
Type YES to accept his second and final offer.
(Congratulations, you just made 30 buckazoids and got a used jetpack.)
Enter into the bar on your right.
Walk up to the far corner of the bar and wait for the bartender to ask
what you want to drink up, and then type BEER
When he serves you, type DRINK BEER
Repeat that two more times.
(On the third time you will overhear a conversation that will give you
the coordinates to your next destination. Apparently, one of the local
patrons has witnessed first hand the destructive power of the Star
Generator.)
Now, walk away from the counter and up to the slot machine on the right
side of the bar.
(This is where you will make enough money to purchase a ship off of
this planet.)
The best strategy here is to first SAVE the game, and then start
playing. If you lose money, RESTORE your old game; if you win money,
SAVE your game. Whatever you do, don't win past 249 buckazoids. If you
do, the machine will blow and you won't get to use it again.
When you've made about 225 buckazoids, press F10 to leave the machine
and then walk out of the bar.
Walk left one screen and talk to Tiny, the used spaceship salesman.
Then, walk up one screen and over to the spaceship.
After Tiny tells you about this little spacecraft and gives you a
purchase price, type BUY THIS SPACESHIP
(This is the ship you will leave this planet in, but first you need to
earn some more money so you can purchase a droid to help you navigate.)
Walk right one screen.
Walk behind the corner of the building and type PICK UP BUCKAZOIDS
(You just picked up 5 hidden buckazoids, which will make your work with
the slot machine a little easier.)
Walk down one screen, and then enter the bar.
Wait around until the laser zaps the alien currently playing the slot
machine, and then walk right up to it.
Play the machine again, and this time you don't need to be afraid to
win as much money as possible.
When you've "broken the bank", exit the bar and walk up one screen.
(Ignore the alien that walks up to you and offers a mode of
transportation. He is really just going to mug you if you follow him.)
Then, go right one screen and enter the "Droids B Us" store.
Walk up the stairs on the right side of the screen and up to the robot
closed to you.
When he the salesman is done explaining it to you, type BUY THIS DROID
Now, walk out of the store and left two screens.
(The droid will follow you to your ship.)
Walk up to the black ladder that is leading to the cockpit of your
newly purchased ship and type CLIMB LADDER
Once inside, type PRESS LOAD BUTTON
(The droid will be raised into the ship so that he can help you
navigate the ship)
When he asks what sector he should target, type HH
(The droid will take over control of your ship and lift off of the
planet Kerona. As you rise above the sandy surface and off into space,
you catch a glimpse of something that makes you question your recent
purchase. Anyway...)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
4. Attack on the Sarien Battle Cruiser
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(After some quick evasive maneuvers through an asteroid field, no
thanks to you I might add, you begin your approach to the Sarien battle
cruiser the Deltaur. Inside this massive spacecraft is the Star
Generator and the alien race that has stolen it. You have to stop them
from using it as the ultimate weapon, anyway you can!)
Type PUT ON JETPACK
Type GET OUT OF SHIP
Use the arrow-keys to move right up to the door in the middle of the
screen.
Type OPEN DOOR
Then, use the arrow-keys to coast into the ship.
When you get inside, walk over to the right side of the doorway and
wait.
When a robot walks through the door and has its back to you, quickly
run through the door and into the next room.
In this room, walk over to the left side of the small black box and
type OPEN CHEST.
Then, type GET IN CHEST
(You'll climb into the chest and close the lid over your head. After a
few seconds, unseen people will carry by into another room of the ship.
Then, you wait until the voices fade away and you feel you are alone.
Also, somehow through the course of your little ride you have lost
possession of the jetpack)
Type GET OUT OF CHEST
Now, walk up to the small black circle in the middle of the back wall
and type OPEN DOOR
Then, type CLIMB INTO MACHINE
(You will make the decision to climb into the washing machine, where
you will soon be joined by a set of guard's clothes. After a quick
little spin around the machine, you feel somewhat different about
yourself.)
Type GET OUT OF THE MACHINE
(Surprise, surprise, you just dawned the guard's uniform. Lucky for
you; you may now move freely about the ship.)
Type LOOK AT UNIFORM
(Your quick search through the pockets of this uniform will reveal an
ID card. From now on you will be known as Buston Freem. Enjoy!)
Go through the door to your right.
Once in that room, wait for a green alien to walk in from the right and
then approach him.
Type TALK TO THE GUARD.
(This isn't necessary to complete the game, but it is necessary if you
want to get all of the game points.)
Now, type KISS THE GUARD
(Same explanation as before.)
Now, keep talking to the guard until he asks you if you have ever
played "Kings Quest III". When he does, type YES.
(Again, same explanation as the previous two directions.)
Then, walk into the elevator on the left.
When your ride comes to a stop and you exit the elevator; you need to
walk left one screen, go up the elevator, and then walk right three
screens.
(You are now in the armory of the Deltaur battle cruiser.)
Walk up to the counter, and type SHOW CARD when prompted by the robot.
Then, when he is in the back room, quickly walk over to the side of the
counter and type GET GRENADE
(You have to be sure and get it before he comes back in the room. When
he does come back in, he'll give you a weapon and a new option will
come up on screen. From now on, you can fire your pistol at any time by
pressing the F6 button.)
Exit this room via the left doorway.
Walk to the midpoint of the catwalk and stop.
When you are directly over the Sarien guarding the Star Generator
below, type DROP THE GRENADE
(The grenade will release poisonous gas into the lungs of the guard
below. Now access to the Star Generator is free and clear.)
Now, go right one screen and re-enter the armory room.
Again, type SHOW THE CARD to once again ask the robot for a gun.
Then, once again, walk over to the side and take another grenade while
he is in the back room.
(The robot will not give you another weapon, but that's okay because
you really just wanted another grenade.)
Now, walk left three screens.
(When you step into the third screen, Roger will trip and his helmet
will roll into the elevator, never to be seen again. You didn't do
anything wrong, this will always happen no matter what you do.
Unfortunately, this means that you will now have to shoot every Sarien
guard you run into from now on. Stay Alert!)
So now, go down the elevator.
When you exit the elevator on the bottom floor, go right two screens.
(Don't forget to kill any and all guards you may run into.)
Walk up to the dead guard and type SEARCH BODY
Then, type PRESS BUTTON
(The button you just pressed on the device you just took will shut off
the force field around the Star Generator, which makes the small
control panel accessible.)
Walk up the set of pink stairs that lead to the Star Generator and type
in LOOK AT PANEL
From here, you need to use the arrow keys along with the F6 button to
enter the digits 6858.
(This will start the automatic self-destruct sequence of the Star
Generator, which means it's time for you to get moving.)
Go left one screen.
(Keep in mind that as you make your way to the end, you need to kill at
least one guard with your ray gun. It counts as three points.)
Enter into the first elevator you come to.
When you get out, quickly step into the elevator on your right.
Once it takes you to the shuttle room, walk past the red gate, down the
three blue steps, and up to the shuttle on the left side of the screen.
Type GET IN THE SHIP
Type LAUNCH
(K-A-B-O-O-M. Congratulations, you have just escaped the Sarien ship.
You saved your own ass, and more importantly the entire galaxy, from
the threat of Sarien aggression. You should be proud of yourself!!!)
=======================================================================
-V.----------------------- EASTER EGG LIST --------------------------
=======================================================================
Here are a few little amusing things you might have missed:
1. The Blues Brothers can be seen playing in the bar on the Ulence
Flats, as well as the band ZZ Top.
2. Written in graffiti on the outside wall of the bar is "Xenon Bites"
written in the Sarien language. Xenon is your home planet, and also the
birthplace of the Star Generator.
3. The "Droids B Us" store sounds like "Toys R Us". Another interesting
fact; the real life "Toys R Us" corporation sued Sierra On-Line for use
of their company name.
4. The doctor on the data cartridge, Dr Slash Vohaul, shares a similar
name to the evil leader of the Sarien, Sludge Vohaul. Could they
possibly be brothers?
5. The Sarien guard you talk to in the Deltaur will ask you about a
game called King's Quest III. Sierra On-Line, who is also the creator
of this game, created the King's Quest series.
6. When you press the "Don't Touch" button on the first escape shuttle,
you will be transported to an area of King's Quest I. (You'll still die
though, so don't try it without saving first.)
7. When you break the slot machine in the bar, it will give you a
message saying that the Gippazoid Corporation is the manufacturer. This
company will appear again in Space Quest II, III, and V.
8. Not really something you can find in the game, but the original name
of this game was going to be "Star Quest"
9. The planet Kerona is a spoof on a reported alien crash site in 1987.
10. The Star Generator that is the main idea of the plot to the game is
very similar to the Death Star from the "Star Wars" movies.
=======================================================================
-VII.---------------------- SPECIAL THANKS --------------------------
=======================================================================
Thank you Sierra On-Line for creating this, and all of the other
installments in the Space Quest series of games.
Thank you Tom Hayes, a fellow GameFAQs writer, for writing your own
Space Quest FAQ/Walkthrough. The point list section of your guide was a
lot of help to me, and your dedication to writing for old PC adventure
-XI.------------------------ FAQ HISTORY ----------------------------
=======================================================================
4/18/2003: Today, I started work on an FAQ/Walkthrough for another
classic Sierra On-Line adventure game; Space Quest I.
4/21/2003: Only took me three days, and it looks pretty good. There
probably won't be any updates to this document. If I ever do update, it
will probably be only to add something to the "Easter Egg List"
section. Anyway, this is now FAQ version 1.0
5/6/2003: I cleaned this guide up a little, as well as adding my
writing signature at the bottom. I'm still gonna call this one FAQ
version 1.0
6/1/2003: I just added the name of another website that is allowed to
post my guide. The FAQ itself didn't actually change, so this is still
FAQ version 1.0
6/12/2003: The website IGN can now host this guide.
8/24/2003: I just fixed a couple of small errors.
