Serious Sam is a first-person shooter released in two instalments for the
PC: The First Encounter in 2001 and The Second Encounter in 2002. Despite the
separate releases, which are complete games in their own right, the two titles
are considered to be a single game, and this guide will treat them as such.
As for the actual game, you are Sam "Serious" Stone, humanity's greatest
soldier, and you are sent back in time (from 2104, where the alien forces of
Mental have nearly wiped out mankind) to blow up a bunch of monsters in various
ancient civilizations for some reason. The story doesn't really make sense, but
that doesn't matter, because Serious Sam is all about action, and there'll be
plenty of that as you fight the thousands (yes, thousands) of aliens that are
hurled at you.
And that's where this guide comes in. The purpose of this guide is to
provide a list of all the enemies encountered in Serious Sam, as well as provide
some basic strategies for fighting them. Note that, as of this writing, boss
enemies are not included, however I may add them in the future.

|Aludran Reptiloid, Common| [ELRC]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: These are large, green, four-armed, humanoid lizard things that
will either appear at ground level or on top of distant buildings
and launch homing green fireballs at you, or attack you with its claws if you
get close.
Strategy: These guys are more of a nuisance than a threat. Their homing
projectiles are easy to dodge, plus you can destroy them with a
single shot from a pistol. Note, however, that after dodging a projectile it
will circle around and try to hit you again, then eventually destroy itself.
Take these guys out with long-range weapons like the tommygun, lasergun, sniper
rifle, or, if you're patient, the pistols. Rockets work too, but you may waste
a few rockets on their projectiles. Do not try to fight these guys in close
combat.
_____________________________
|Aludran Reptiloid, Highlander| [ELRH]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: They look the same as the common reptiloids, except they're orange
and, most importantly, <bleep>ing huge! In the First Encounter,
their attacks are identical to their common cousins, except they fire a more
powerful orange indestructible projectile. In the Second Encounter, their
attack is similar to the fiendian reptiloid's attack.
Strategy: Just keep firing rockets, or whatever your heaviest weapon is, at
him while dodging his attacks, which shouldn't be too hard. Do
NOT let this guy get close to you.
_____________________________________
|Aludran Reptiloid, Highlander's Bride| [ELRB]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: If you thought the Highlander was big, wait until you see his
wife! And she's not to pleased about you roughing up her hubby!
The Bride only appears once in the game, and she doesn't even always show up.
I'm not sure exactly what triggers her, but she seems to appear more often in
co-op games. She looks exactly like the other reptiloids, but is a greyish
colour and is even bigger than the Highlander. She will launch fireballs at
you similar to the fiendian reptiloid's attack.
Strategy: Just like when fighting the Highlander, use everything you've got
(rockets, cannon balls, grenades, etc.) while dodging her attacks.
Do NOT let her get close, as she can kill you with one swipe of her claws.
__________
|Arachnoids| [ELAR]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: These are giant scorpions with a humanoid body at the front. Think
centaur except replace the horse's body with a scorpion's body.
These enemies are equipped with a highly-accurate minigun, and will sting you
with their tails if you get too close. They'll often appear on distant
buildings to attack you from afar. Yellow arachnoids are juvenile and fairly
weak, while the red adults are much stronger.
Strategy: First of all, try to find some kind of cover to avoid their
miniguns. Wait until they stop shooting, then step out of cover,
shoot them a few times, and hide again. If they're close use one of the
shotguns, while if they're in the distance launch a few rockets at them, or give
them a taste of your own minigun! (Actually, the tommygun will get the job done
if you don't want to waste ammo).

|Beheaded Rocketeer| [ELBR]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: The lowliest of Mental's minions, these executed Sirian soldiers
have been brought back to life to battle Sam. They carry their
severed head in one hand and a slow-firing projectile weapon in the other. They
are distinguishable from the other beheaded soldiers by their purple shirts.
Strategy: Simply dodge their slow-moving projectiles and shoot them with the
pistols or the shotgun.
____________________
|Beheaded Firecracker| [ELBF]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A slight upgrade from the rocketeer, these headless freaks are
equipped with a slightly better weapon that sprays several shots
that spread out along the ground in an arc. Firecrackers wear a red shirt.
Strategy: Dodge between or jump over their shots and shoot them with the
pistols or shotgun.
_______________
|Beheaded Bomber| [ELBB]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: As his name suggests, this beheaded soldier likes to chuck bombs
at people. They sport a fashionable green shirt.
Strategy: They make a noise when they throw their bombs, so use that as your
cue to move to a new location to avoid getting hit. Take them out
with the pistols or the shotgun, but don't get too close, as they often explode
when you kill them.
_________________
|Beheaded Kamikaze| [ELBK]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: The beheaded kamikaze holds a bomb in each hand, and will attempt
to deliver them to you up-close and personal, blowing themselves
up in the process. They differ from the other beheaded soldiers in that they're
shirtless (don't get too excited ladies; it doesn't take long for these guys to
blow their loads) and they hold their arms up as they run at you, but the most
distinguishing feature of these lunatics is the blood-curdling scream they let
out as they charge you. Which doesn't really make sense, since they don't have
a head...
Strategy: Take them out with the pistols or shotgun, or tommygun if they're
in large numbers. Try to shoot them when they're near other
enemies, as they explode when they die and can damage other enemies. Whatever
you do, don't let them get close.
____________________
|Biomechanoid (minor)| [ELBN]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: This is a blue, chicken-legged, hunchbacked enemy with two laser
cannons mounted on its sides. Their battle strategy is to take a
few steps towards you, stop, unleash a barrage of laser shots at you, and
repeat.
Strategy: You can easily strafe a single biomech's lasers, although it can
get a bit complicated when there's many of them, especially if
they have you surrounded. At long distance, use the tommygun or rockets, while
opt for the shotgun if they get close. Watch out for the single laser they
shoot as they die.
____________________
|Biomechanoid (major)| [ELBJ]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: This a large, red, chicken-legged walker equipped with two rocket
launchers. They follow pretty much the same attack pattern as
their minor counterparts; that is to take a few steps, fire two rockets, and
repeat.
Strategy: At long range you can easily dodge or shoot their slow moving
rockets, and they'll even take out other enemies that get in the
way. But up close, these guys are very dangerous, since they fire down at you,
making it difficult to avoid taking damage. Take these guys out with rockets or
other heavy weapons before they can get anywhere near you. If they do get
close, try to jump as they fire their rockets so they end up shooting off into
the distance. Watch out for the single rocket they fire as they die.
______
|Cannon| [ELCN]
¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A cannon. Some can only shoot straight, while others can rotate
(no rhyme intended).
Strategy: Dodge the cannon balls, since they can kill you in one hit. Shoot
the cannons with the sniper rifle.
_____________________
|Cucurbito the Pumpkin| [ELCP]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A beefy, overalls-wearing humanoid with a pumpkin for a head and a
chainsaw in his hands. He'll charge at you and send you flying
around the room.
Strategy: Try to take them out from a distance with the tommygun or rockets.
If they get close, just sidestep their attacks and shoot them a
few times with one of the shotguns.
________________________
|Fiendian Reptiloid Demon| [ELFD]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A red, humanoid reptile demon thing with wings, although it can't
fly. They will stay at a distance and launch fast-moving
fireballs at you. These fireballs will try to hit you three times before burning
out.
Strategy: Since these enemies always appear at a distance, the weapon of
choice is the sniper rifle, although any long-range weapon will
do. Their fireballs are easy to dodge, but keep in mind that, after being
dodged, they will turn around and try to hit you again, so you will have to
dodge each fireball three times. Just keep strafing back and forth and you
should be able to avoid them.
____________
|Gnaar (male)| [ELGM]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A grey humanoid creature with no head, instead having a large
mouth and single eye on its torso. Some male gnaars appear as
just flying torsos. Regular male gnaars will charge toward you and try to cut
you with their claws, while flying torso gnaars will try to bite you. Male
gnaars are smaller and weaker than female gnaars.
Strategy: Just keep moving to avoid their attacks and shoot them with the
shotgun. Note that they'll sometimes get knocked over by a
shotgun blast then get back up again, so make sure you finish them off.
______________
|Gnaar (female)| [ELGF]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A purple humanoid creature with no head, instead having a large
mouth and a single eye on its torso. Some female gnaars appear as
just flying torsos, some are invisible, and some are invisible flying torsos.
Regular female gnaars will charge toward you and try to cut you with their
claws, while flying torso gnaars will try to bite you. Female gnaars are larger
and stronger than male gnaars.
Strategy: Just keep moving to avoid their attacks and shoot them with the
shotgun. Note that they'll sometimes get knocked over by a
shotgun blast then get back up again, so make sure you finish them off.
Gnaars are pretty noisy, so if you can hear gnaars nearby but can't see any,
there may be invisible gnaars on the loose. Try to spot their faint outlines,
which shouldn't be too hard since they'll be in your face pretty quickly.
______________
|Kleer Skeleton| [ELKS]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: Demonic skeletons that either travel in huge packs or wait around
corners to ambush you. Kleer skeletons will charge toward you,
stopping every few seconds to launch a projectile at you, then lunge at you when
they get close. They will then proceed to stab you with their needle-like arms.
Lovely chaps. You can hear them coming by the galloping noise they make.
Strategy: Alone or in small numbers these guys aren't so tough, but in large
numbers they can be quite dangerous, and they're usually in large
numbers. Their projectiles are easy enough to dodge (they travel about as fast
as the beheaded rocketeer's attack), but their lunge attack is devastating once
they've got you surrounded. Plus, they'll often act as a meat shield while more
dangerous enemies close in. When there's only a few of them, use the
double-barrelled shotgun and shoot at point-blank range as they lunge at you or
as they recover from a lunge. When there's many of them, try to take as many
out as possible from a distance with rockets and grenades, or the minigun,
lasergun, or sniper rifle, then switch to the chainsaw, double-barrelled
shotgun, or knife once they close in on you.
__________
|Lava Golem| [ELLG]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: As the name implies, this is a golem made of lava. It's orange
glow is easy to spot. Lava golems come in three sizes: small,
large, and holy <expletive> that's huge! They attack by throwing chunks of lava
at you; small ones throw them directly at you, while larger ones throw them
ahead of you. Once you deal enough damage to a lava golem, it'll spawn a
smaller one (unless it's already at the smallest size), for a total of three
lava golems spawned per lava golem killed.
Strategy: For the small golems, just strafe their attacks and shoot them
with the shotgun. For the larger golems, strafe in one direction
until they chuck some lava at you, then switch directions to dodge their
attacks. Fire back with rockets to bring them down, but watch out for the other
golems they spawn.
_________________________________
|Marsh Hopper from Rigil Kentaurus| [ELMH]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: Small, frog-like creatures that attack in large groups by
exploding in a shower of toxic goo. They are sometimes presented
as a "boss" battle where the player will be locked in a room where hundreds of
hoppers are then spawned.
Strategy: Keep moving and jumping around to avoid their attacks. Weapons of
choice for fending of hoppers are the tommygun or the chainsaw.
The best strategy is to back yourself into a corner with the chainsaw and sit
back and watch as they hop right onto it.
___________________
|Reeban Electro-fish| [ELRE]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A big-mouthed fish that can shoot a short-range electric bolt that
sends the player flying. Usually appears in small groups.
They'll sometimes jump out of the water and attempt to follow you on land, only
to suffocate themselves.
Strategy: These guys are pretty annoying, as they swim fast and can knock
you back pretty far. If possible, get out of the water and try to
shoot them from far enough away that their bolts can't hit you. If they corner
you underwater, your best bet is to use the tommygun on them.
____________________
|Scythian Witch-Harpy| [ELSH]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: This appears to be an almost-but-not-quite naked woman with a nice
pair of... wings, and talons instead of feet. They often appear
in swarms and will launch projectiles at you until they get close, then they'll
swoop down to attack you with their talons.
Strategy: Try not to let them get close, as their projectiles are much
easier to dodge than their talons, especially when a bunch swoop
at you at once. The tommygun works best at long range, and the shotgun when
they get close. Rockets are also effective when there's a bunch of them
clustered together. Note that their wings can become too damaged to fly, after
which they'll attack you from the ground with similar attacks. Like the gnaars,
they may also get up after being knocked over by the shotgun, so make sure
they're dead before you move on.
________________
|Sirian Were-bull| [ELSW]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A large, brown, four-legged beast that will charge at you
repeatedly and attempt to knock you around with its horns. These
enemies make a very loud rumbling noise when they run, so you can hear them
coming from miles away. Were-bulls usually travel in herds.
Strategy: Try to take these guys out from a distance with the minigun or
rocket launcher, or try to line a bunch of them up so you can take
them all out with a single cannon ball. Switch to the double-barreled shotgun or
chainsaw if they get close. You can avoid their charges by simply stepping
aside, but this can be tricky when facing a stampede of them. Fortunately, when
one hits you, it tends to fling you out of the way of the others, buying you
some time in exchange for some health. Do NOT let them corner you.
____________________________
|Zorg Warrior from Belmeez IV| [ELZW]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: These are humanoid lizard creatures that have had all of their
skin burned off, so their bright red muscles are exposed. Lovely.
They are equipped with a laser weapon that is similar to the beheaded
rocketeer's weapon, except it fires a few shots at a time.
Strategy: Use pretty much the same strategy as when fighting the rocketeers;
That is, dodge their shots and shoot them with the pistols or
shotgun.
______________________________
|Zorg Commander from Belmeez IV| [ELZC]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: These are slightly larger zorgs that still have some of their blue
skin intact. They're a bit tougher than regular zorgs and have a
better weapons that sprays shots in an arc similar to the beheaded firecracker's
shots.
Strategy: Dodge around or between the shots and shoot the commander with the
pistols or the shotgun.
______________________________
|Zumb'ul from Planet Ras-Ad-Nyk| [ELZP]
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Description: A medium-sized orange-skinned humanoid creature with two large
tusks sticking out the sides of its face. These ugly freaks hold
a rocket launcher in each hand, and will fire them together such that one rocket
travels directly toward you while the other travels at an angle.
Strategy: First of all, don't let these guys get too close, or both of their
rockets will hit you. Secondly, they fire at you in such a way
that if you stand still, you get hit by one rocket, while if you run
continuously in one direction you get hit by the other. Make sure you position
yourself between their shots and don't simply strafe in one direction around
them. Take them out at long range with the sniper rifle or tommygun. Use the
shotgun if they manage to get close.

Thank you, reader, for looking at my guide! I hope you found at least
something helpful or entertaining in this guide, even if it's only just one
small thing. Most of this stuff you could have probably figured out on your
own, and probably have done it better even, but oh well; I made this guide for
fun, and fun it was.
Thank you Croteam, for making one of the funnest (it's a word, dammit)
and funniest games I've ever played.
Special thanks to Groovilicious for checking over this guide and providing
feedback on how I could improve it (and encouraging me to make it in the first
place).
