RAPTOR: Call of the shadows
A guide for anyone who remembers this game. If you do remember this game well
you are lucky, because I've got a guide that can get you through everything
from Outer Regions Elite and the Twin Laser. Have you seen the CARNAGE that
thing causes? Whoa. MEGA-COOL!
Anyway, we should start off right about now.
Section 1: Story
Your engine's turbines roar as you scream out of the sky. Startled troops look
up just in time to see your wing cannons blaze. You feel the plane buck
slightly as your missiles streak toward their targets. A flash in the distance
tells you that they have done their job and so have you. The Mega-Corps pay
well, for those good enough to survive. They call you into the shadows with
dreams of wealth, and you answer, the only way you know how.
That was taken from the game's help screen. The story is, you have to blow
stuff up and not die and if you do that you are rich. Sounds simple? It's not.
Section 2: Areas
Your quest for wealth can take place in three areas: the Bravo Sector, the
Tango Sector and the Outer Regions. The Bravo Sector is easy, the Tango Sector
is medium and the Outer Regions is hard. Each level has nine 'waves' of
enemies, and they get harder as you progress. On the final wave, there is a
'super-boss', who is really hard to beat. If you can't do it, GO HOME!
Section 3: Your Craft and Weapons
In the beginning, your craft is a space ship, with 75% shields and machine
guns. That's just about it. If you want better weapons, you can spend the money
you earn from blasting ships. Unfortunately, the Twin Laser, which is the best
weapon, is easily out of your reach with a $175000 price tag.
Weapons:
Megabomb: Don't bother with these, unless you get one in the level. Then blast
the boss with it. Price: $32250
Air/Air Missile: You get one in the first level (Bravo One). Price: $63500
Plasma Cannon: Save money for the Twin Laser, then buy it. Price: $78800
Bomb: Don't bother, these are slow. Price: $98200
Air/Ground Missile: You get them in the 3rd level (Bravo Three). Price: $110000
Dumbfire Missiles: Quite good, you get them free sometime in about the 5th
level (Bravo Five). Price: $145200
Micro Missiles: Save them for when you have the Twin Laser. Combine with the
Plasma Cannon and you are unstoppable (well, nearly). Price: $175600
Missile Pod: BORING! You get one in level 26 (Outer Eight). Price: $204950
Auto-Track Mini Gun (Thor): Get one as soon as possible. Don't wait for the
Twin Laser. Price: $250650
Power Disrupter: No. This doesn't even kill, only disables weapons. Price:
$300750
Laser Turret (Odin): Not as good as the Thor, because the Thor attacks ground
targets as well as air. Price: $512850
Pulse Cannon: It's OK, but save your money for the Twin Laser. Price: $725000
Deathray: Get it once you have the TL. Price: $95000
Twin Laser: THE BEST. Get a Thor to build funds. Then have hours of fun as you
incinerate everything! Price: $175000, unfortunately.
Section 4: Your Enemy's Weapons
Your enemy's weapons consist of these 4 types:
Weapon Description Damage Where Avoid it?
_________________________________________________________________
| Fireball | Yellow ball| Low | BTO | Don't bother |
| Missile | Blue stick | Medium | BTO | Try to |
| Plasma cannon| Red droplet| Heavy | TO | Avoid |
| Laser | Red line | Very heavy| TO | Do not get hit!|
|______________|____________|___________|______|________________|
In the Where column, B means Bravo Sector, T means Tango Sector and O means
Outer Regions.
Section 5: Special Items
Energy Module: Your ship's shields, displayed in the right side of the screen.
If the bar goes down to the bottom, you DIE! Price: $10000 for 25 bars
Ion Scanner: Shows the boss's health. Price: $10000
Phase Shields: These are extra shields that protect you from attacks. They take
the damage and when they are exhausted, you're on your own. You can buy up to
five and if you find more in the level, you can carry up to 13. Price: $78500
Section 6: Beginning
To begin with, you are on a title screen. MAGIC! To start a new game, go to New
Game, obviously. Enter your name and callsign and select your difficulty level.
Training: Go to this one. You will progress through the levels and end up on
Elite anyway, so just go here.
Rookie: This is Easy difficulty.
Veteran: This is Medium difficulty.
Elite: This is really hard. There are special tips for Elite at the end of this
document.
Anyway, select Training and you will find yourself in the Hangar. Here you can
save, quit, buy more stuff, or start a wave.
Go to the supply room and switch until you find the Ion Scanner. Buy that,
save, then go to Fly Mission. Select either Bravo Sector or Auto Pilot. It
doesn't matter, you will go to the Bravo Sector anyway.
Play 3 levels. If you have $250650, buy a Thor. If you don't, sell your
Air/Ground Missiles. If you still don't have enough, start again!
If you got a Thor, you're all set. You have no money after you play the 4th
level, but if you got the Thor you can destroy everything and rake in the cash,
then save it for the Twin Laser.
Now you are on Rookie, when you win you will be on Veteran, then Elite!
Section 7: Tips for Every Level
* Don't stop firing. Ignore what the Raptor Help says about regaining
health if you stop firing. You really don't need it as it takes a long time to
charge even ONE health bar, let alone 100.
* Shoot EVERYTHING. Don't worry if you get hit, it doesn't hurt enough to
take you down.
* Don't run into ships to destroy them. It loses a lot of health and just
because you missed one or two doesn't mean it's the end of the world.
* Watch for shadows at the top of the screen. You can anticipate where
the ships will be and kill them before they shoot. They always appear a little
left of the shadow if they are on the left or a little right if they are on the
right.
* When you see a huge shadow get ready for the boss. If you got the Ion
Scanner you can see its health. Avoid it when it shoots and get in there when
it stops. Time the intervals between shots or just hit it on the sides. If you
do it right it'll be six feet under in no time.
* When you come across little yellow stars, fly into them for a cash
bonus.
* When you see little oval things on the ground, shoot them and collect
whatever is in them.
* When you see a ship that flies slowly and doesn't shoot, explode it and
collect the goodies that are inside.
* Raptor is very repetitive. These tips are for every level, because
every level is basically the same: shoot, dodge, kill boss, win. The only
difference is, the levels get harder with more enemies whose shields are great.
Follow these tips and you'll be on Elite mode in no time.
ELITE MODE TIPS:
* Phase Shields are everything. Buy five.
* Avoid as many bullets as possible. They do a lot more damage now.
* Make sure you have the Twin Laser. You can supply your Phase Shield
needs with the immense amount of money you rake in.
* A word of warning: In Outer Regions Five, the first boss is a land one.
Go over to the side and move around to avoid the tracking fireballs. It's not
worth it!
* The tips above also apply.
FINAL LEVEL WALKTHROUGH:
In Outer Regions Final, the last level, make sure your Phase Shields are
charged. Don't worry about killing anything, just keep to the side and only
shoot the land enemies with tracking fireballs. When you come to the boss,
shoot the sides. When it opens, shoot the two trackers that look like this:
|oo| on both sides. Position your TL so that you shoot that and the missile pod
behind it. Repeat on the other side. Then go in the middle and shoot out the
middle panel. Make sure you're in between the lasers and shoot until it's gone.
Then kill the fireball shooters that shoot diagonally. I'm not sure if there
are plasma cannons but there probably are, so shoot them out by going very
close but not on them. If you can't do it without nearly being killed, just use
the Thor. It's very time consuming but at least you don't get hurt.
Wow! If you won, you are deserving of the title "Equal Raptor Champion With
About 200000 Others"!

Oh, and by the way, there are cheats for Raptor but I don't know them.

Section 11: Version History
I just added this bit as an afterthought.
25/4 - Ver. 0.5. I did the actual walkthrough. Still need to add Story,
Weapons, etc.
26/4 - Ver. 1.0. Finished guide!
27/4 - Ver. 1.1. Added this section.
9/8 - Ver 1.2. Fixed a few minor errors (especially in the table) and added the
ASCII art at the top. Nothing groundbreaking. Also changed the e-mail address,
I never checked the other one.
