King's Quest VI Catacombs Guide: Version 1.0
(c) Robin Blanchard 2004

This is a short guide designed to get you through the catacombs section of
King's Quest VI only. For information on other areas of the game, please refer
to complete walkthroughs. Although the rest of the game can be challenging, I
chose to write this catacombs guide because it can be one of the most confusing
and frustrating parts of the game.

The catacombs are located on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain. You can visit the
island once early in the game, but the second time you go back, you will be
caught and thrown into the catacombs. Once you are inside, you cannot leave, so
make sure you have completed every area in the game up until this point.

Please note that you will need the tinderbox from the pawn shop owner on the
Isle of the Crown, the hole in the wall and the red scarf from the Isle of
Wonder, and the brick from the Isle of the Beast to make it through the
catacombs.

You start out in the catacombs staring at Alexander's back. All directions will
be given from this viewpoint. Left is the player's left, right is the player's
right, so on and so forth. Forward and backward denote up and down,
respectively. If this is confusing, I apologize. Please contact me at
[email protected] to suggest an alternative means of explanation. Also,
generally each direction indicates a room change, so you might want to keep
count in case you get lost, which is entirely possible, as all the rooms in
the catacombs look exactly the same.

I. Catacombs Level 1
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room forward
*take the skull lying on the floor
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room to your left

This is a puzzle room. There are several of these rooms throughout the
catacombs. In this room, there are many tiles lying on the floor, and each has
a different picture. You must step on the tiles in the right order to avoid
being shot down by an arrow. Refer to your guidebook for the following poem...

"Three roses laid upon the bower/A scythe for he who cuts the flower/A crown,
a dove, most noble race/Thy bones make sacred this dread place."

There is only one way to step on the pictures in the right order. Rose, rose,
rose, scythe, crown, dove, skull and crossbones. Follow it and you will find
yourself on the other side of the room. Move Alexander one room to the left.

*Note: If you move one more room to your left here, you will meet Celeste,
princess of the Winged Ones. Do not be fooled; this is not the real Celeste.
Following her will lead you to a trap floor, and ultimately, to your death.
Instead of left, move Alexander one room forward.

*take the shield from the wall
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*take the coins from the eyes of the skeleton
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room to your right

This is another puzzle room. As soon as you step inside, the doors will seal
and the ceiling begins to move towards the floor. Use the brick in your
inventory and throw it into the gears. They will stop turning and you can
exit the room. Move Alexander one room to the right.

*move Alexander one room to the right
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room to the right

This is the last puzzle room on the first floor. A trap door will activate
here, but don't worry, you'll survive the fall this time. Why this one and
not the others? Who knows... Regardless, you will find yourself in a dark
room on the second floor of the catacombs. Use the tinderbox to relight the
torch and you will be on your way.

II. Catacombs Level 2
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room to your right

This is a special room. Alexander can clearly hear the minotaur, the beast
that frequents these lovely premises, on the other side of the wall. Use
the hole in the wall acquired on the Isle of Wonder to spy into the next
room. You will see the minotaur in front of a secret door hidden by a
tapestry. You want to get into that room. Don't worry about the hole in the
wall, you can't get it back after it runs away. You must press on to more
important matters.

*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room to your left
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room backward
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room to your right
*move Alexander one room forward
*move Alexander one room forward

You have entered the tapestry room. Examine the tapestry to open the door
into the minotaur's secret lair.

III. Boss Fight: Minotaur

The minotaur is not too happy to see you. Lady Celeste is, even though she
may not act like it. Walk further into the room until she sees you and
calls for help. When the minotaur backs you against the flames and prepares
to charge you, use the red scarf from the Isle of Wonder and he will jump
into the flames behind you. Okay, so he wasn't the smartest animal, but
you're safe. Rescue Lady Celeste and you will be rewarded with a visit
to the Oracle, and perhaps some more answers on what is going on with
Cassima.

I hope you have found this mini-guide useful. Any questions, comments,
suggestions, etc. can be directed to me, Robin, at [email protected].
Questions especially pertinent to the catacombs will be added in a
Frequently Asked Questions section later. If I have made any mistakes, I
apologize, and please let me know. I promise not to leap all over you. :)
