1) Introduction (DXA100)

It's no secret that Deus Ex, the award-winning first-person shooter developed
by Ion Storm and released in June 2000, has become one of the most beloved and
revered titles in modern gaming history.
Combining open-ended gameplay that rewards exploration and creative thinking,
lots of twists and turns and a conspiracy-laden storyline that still holds
up in the face of its successors Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003) and Deus Ex:
Human Revolution (2011), the original game has stood the test of time.
Yet, the element that makes the game so unique (in this author's opinion) is
the massive amount of alternate and unique dialogues that can occur in
various situations thoughout the game. While there are a number of
conversations that give you two or more dialogue choices to take, there are
also plenty of situations where you can hear alternate or otherwise unused
dialogue for taking alternate paths, attempting to sequence-break or being
involved in different circumstances.
While the majority of the dialogue is catalogued in various game scripts,
including one on GameFAQS itself

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/250533-deus-ex/faqs/51057), it is still missing
a lot of context and alternate conversations that can occur during various
missions. This guide seeks to fix that situation, and includes every possible
known combination of alternate or additional dialogue that can occur through
unique situations and story changes.
To note, this guide will include the following examples:
1) Instances where the player receives one or more dialogue choices with an
NPC.
2) Instances where the player is rewarded with alternate dialogue if they
choose to complete a mission objective or minor task before they're asked to.
3) Instances where the player is rewarded with alternate or additional
dialogue for skipping certain tasks.
4) Instances where the player is rewarded with alternate or additional
dialogue if they visit an NPC without having consulted them previously for
information, or after the point where their perceived "value" in the story
is finished.
5) Conversations where the player will receive alternate dialogue based on
whether they used lethal or non-lethal tactics.
6) Conversations with alternate dialogue choices that cannot be accessed in
the course of normal gameplay, and require file editing, mods or cheat codes
to see.
This guide is intended to be a complete resource for people looking to find
out just how much extra dialogue is in the game, where to find it, and what
situations cause it. It is segmented by the map number designations outlined
in the game files.
This FAQ is also organized in an easy-to-read format that allows for quick

2) Mission 1 - Liberty Island (DXA200)
======================================================================
Alex Jacobson - Liberty Island Dock: Alex will have additional dialogue if
the player leaves the dock without speaking to Paul first.
Paul Denton - Liberty Island Dock: Paul will have an alternate line of
dialogue based on what weapon JC chooses (GEP Gun/Rifle/Crossbow).
Corporal Collins - Liberty Island Dock: Collins will have additional dialogue
if the player manages to shoot the seagulls flying beside the dock.
Tech Sergeant Kaplan - UNATCO Base: Kaplan will have different dialogue based
on whether you tell him that you prefer a lethal/non-lethal approach, and if
the player doesn't have enough credits to buy the items. Kaplan will also have
extra dialogue if the player is holding a sniper rifle when they buy the
scope (normally inaccessible). Additionally, if you choose not to talk to him
until you deal with the NSF commander, Kaplan will have alternate dialogue
where he expresses surprise that JC didn't need his help, but will still offer
his selection of weapon mods and munitions.
Harvey Filben - Liberty Island 2nd Dock: Filben will have different dialogue
based on whether the player wants to spare or kill the NSF commander.
Additionally, if the player waits to talk with him until after completing the
mission, Filben will have alternate dialogue either asking JC why he stood
around for so long if no one wanted to talk to him or chastizing him for
killing said commander.
Older Woman - Liberty Island 2nd Dock: If the player waits to speak with her
until after completing the mission, she will not have the munitions available
for sale, and will have alternate dialogue.
Gunther Hermann - Statue of Liberty Ground Floor Jail Cell: Gunther will have
different dialogue based on whether the player offers to give him a weapon or
let him go back to UNATCO base unarmed. If the player offers to give him a
weapon, up to four different weapons can be given based on what JC has
available on him at the time, including weapons that shouldn't be accessible
at that point (knife/pistol/stealth pistol/assault gun).
NSF Terrorists - Statue of Liberty Top Floor: The two terrorists encountered
near the top of the statue (just before the ladder leading to the NSF
commander) have an alternate line of dialogue based on whether the NSF troops
set off an alarm, and/or Gunther was rescued.
Alex Jacobson - Statue of Liberty Top Floor: Alex will give you an alternate
line of dialogue when you reach the stairs leading to the top of the statue,
based on whether you helped Gunther escape or not.
NSF Commander (Leo Gold) - Statue of Liberty Top Floor: The NSF commander will
a have a line of different dialogue based on whether you threaten to kill him
or attempt to make him give more information.
Alex Jacobson - Statue of Liberty Post-Completion: Alex will have alternate
dialogue based on whether you killed the NSF commander without talking to him,
talking to him before killing him or sparing his life.
UNATCO Soldiers - Statue of Liberty Various: The UNATCO troops will have
different dialogue after you deal with the NSF commander, based on whether you
killed/apprehended him, whether any NSF terrorists were left alive, whether
any Gas Grenades were left undetonated and whether you chose a
stealthy/violent approach.

2.1) Mission 1a - UNATCO 1st Visit (DXA201)
Paul Denton - UNATCO Base Front Door: Paul will have different dialogue based
on whether you apprehended/killed the NSF commander (or made him turn hostile
then fled), and whether you chose a stealthy/violent approach.
Private Lloyd - UNATCO Base Front Door: Lloyd will have an alternate line of
dialogue based on whether the player was stealthy or violent. Additionally,
he will give you a hidden line of dialogue if you choose to sequence break by
throwing a Gas Grenade at the front door of the base before apprehending the
commander.
Alex Jacobson - JC's Office: Alex will have alternate dialogue based on
whether or not Janice gave JC his password before entering.
Janice Reed - Manderley's Office: JC will have additional dialogue telling
Janice he already has his login and password if he visited his own office
prior to entering Manderley's.
Joseph Manderley - Manderley's Office: In the conversation with Manderley,
he will have alternate lines if the player visits without having completed
one or both of their check-up tasks (visiting Medical and the armory). In the
post-mission briefing, he will have extra lines based on whether JC rescued
Gunther or not, and whether he killed the commander. He will also remark on
whether you knocked out or killed the UNATCO soldier walking up the stairs at
the Statue of Liberty, and if you walked in on Shannon in the women's
bathroom.
Sam Carter - Armory: Carter will have alternate dialogue based on what JC asks
for, as well as an additional line of dialogue if JC chooses ammo and took a
violent approach during the mission.
Jaime Reyes - Medical: Reyes will have alternate dialogue if JC picked up the
augmentation canister from the room with the NSF commander and has it while
talking to Reyes in Medical. He will also have alternate dialogue based on
whether the player has encountered Anna Navarre or not.
Anna Navarre/Gunther Hermann - Break Room: JC will have alternate lines of
dialogue explaining that he needs to do something if it hasn't been completed
yet (visit Medical/visit the armory/visit Manderley/go to the boat dock).
Gunther will also have different dialogue based on whether or not the player
rescued him from the Statue.

3) Mission 2 - Battery Park (DXA300)
======================================================================
Josh - Battery Pack Boat Dock: JC and Josh will have different dialogue based
on whether the player chooses to give him food or not, and what food they give
him (candy bar/soy food).
Billy - Castle Clinton Kiosk: JC and Billy will have different dialogue based
on whether the player chooses to give him food or not, and what food they give
him (candy bar/soy food).
Veteran - Battery Park: The veteran will have alternate dialogue based on
whether the Castle Clinton objective was completed lethally/non-lethally.
Anna Navarre - Castle Clinton Front Door: After JC completes the mission to
recover the Ambrosia, Anna will remark on his lethal/non-lethal tactics, as
well as whether the player chooses to tell her he's learning as he goes or
that she has "copper wiring". Additionally, if the player chooses to resolve
the situation at the subway station before clearing Castle Clinton (or does
both tasks before talking to her), Anna has alternate dialogue praising JC's
abilities. Anna also has alternate dialogue if the player takes too long to
finish the Castle Clinton objective.
Alex Jacobson - Battery Park Post-Completion: Alex will have different
dialogue based on whether the player saved/killed the hostages in the subway
station, and whether the player has completed the Castle Clinton objective or
took too long to finish it.

4) Mission 3 - Hell's Kitchen (DXA400)
======================================================================
Paul Denton - Hell's Kitchen Subway Station: If the player gets onto the
subway car without resolving the situation in the Battery Park subway station,
Paul will have special dialogue chewing JC out when he arrives in Hell's
Kitchen. Paul also has alternate dialogue based on whether or not JC used a
violent/non-violent approach on Liberty Island, as well as special dialogue
from JC telling Paul to wait if his inventory is full.
Anna Navarre - Castle Clinton Front Door: If the player skipped the Castle
Clinton objective, took the train to Hell's Kitchen and rode back immediately
afterwards (or when Paul Denton is not standing in front of the subway car),
Anna will have alternate dialogue letting the player know that she secured the
Ambrosia herself and is waiting for UNATCO to secure the area.
Sally - Hell's Kitchen Subway Station: Sally will have additional dialogue if
JC pays her fifty credits for information.
Johnny - Hell's Kitchen Alley: Johnny has different responses based on whether
the player chooses to cut a deal with him, threaten or lightly intimidate him.
Sandra Renton - Hell's Kitchen Alley: Sandra will have alternate dialogue
based on whether JC threatened/killed Johnny, whether JC has encountered her
father already, whether the NSF/UNATCO fighting in the nearby park has already
been triggered, whether the player has already heard of Smuggler or not, and
whether her father is alive or dead as a result of the hostage situation.
Janey - Underworld Bar: Janey has alternate dialogue based on whether or not
JC has already encountered Johnny/Sandra in the alley or not, whether Sandra
is alive or dead, and what Johnny's condition is.
Jordan Shea - Underworld Bar: Jordan has alternate dialogue if the player
assaults any of the bar patrons, and tells them to drop some gear if they try
to buy a beer, wine or food with a full inventory and/or no money.
Jock - Underworld Bar: Jock has an alternate line of dialogue based on whether
you give him beer or wine, whether the player has heard about Jojo, and
whether or not JC has already heard of Smuggler from someone else. Later, at
Osgood & Sons, he will have alternate dialogue based on whether JC spoke to
him previously at the bar.
Office Worker - Underworld Bar: The worker discussing Ambrosia has alternate
dialogue options based on the player's response, and whether the player has
heard of/met Smuggler already.
Joe Greene - Underworld Bar: JC can choose whether or not to discuss police
matters with Joe Greene.
Doctor and Homeless Man - Free Clinic: JC will have alternate dialogue with
the doctor based on whether the player chooses to kill the homeless man or ask
him to leave the clinic.
Doctor in Foyer - Free Clinic: The doctor selling medkits in the foyer will
have alternate dialogue based on whether or not JC chooses to buy the code to
the surgery bay.
Smuggler - Smuggler's Hideout Street Entrance: Smuggler will have alternate
dialogue based on whether JC knows the password or not.
Alex Jacobson - Smuggler's Hideout: Alex will have alternate dialogue based on
whether JC entered the hideout from the elevator or the cargo container.
Smuggler - Smuggler's Hideout: Smuggler will have alternate dialogue if JC
rescued Ford before visiting him for the first time (normally inaccessible),
or Ford died during the rescue before meeting him (normally inaccessible).
Additionally, after completing the sewer rescue legitimately, Smuggler will
have alternate dialogue based on whether Ford survived the rescue or not,
whether the player has the credits to buy the item, as well as whether they
bought all of Smuggler's goods before rescuing Ford.
Ford Schick - MJ12 Sewer Base: Schick will have alternate dialogue if the
player clips through the sewer grate and enters the MJ12 base to rescue him
without meeting Smuggler first (normally inaccessible).
Gilbert Renton - 'Ton Hotel: Gilbert will have different dialogue based on
whether the player has already encountered Sandra or not, whether the fighting
in the nearby park has occurred, what Johnny's condition is if Sandra was
encountered, whether Sandra is alive or dead, and whether the hostage
situation has been resolved or not.
Hostages - 'Ton Hotel: The hostages will have additional dialogue if they are
spoken to while the terrorists are still alive.
UNATCO Soldier - 'Ton Hotel Front Door: The soldier outside the hotel will
have alternate dialogue based on whether JC solved the hostage situation with
no/minimal/all casualties.
UNATCO Soldiers - 'Ton Hotel Broken Fence: The two soldiers standing at the
fence by the 'Ton Hotel will have alternate dialogue based on whether or not
JC chooses to take the Gas Grenades from them.

4.1) Mission 3a - UNATCO 2nd Visit (DXA401)
Anna Navarre - Manderley's Office: Anna will have alternate dialogue based on
the player's performance in the previous mission (finished all tasks/refused
to finish Castle Clinton mission/refused to solve subway hostage situation).
Additionally, she will have an alternate conversation with Manderley after
JC's briefing, based on the player's performance in the previous mission. She
also has additional dialogue with Manderley discussing an assassination and
telling JC to get out if the player hangs around (the latter remark is
inaccessible).
Joseph Manderley - Manderley's Office: Manderley will have alternate dialogue
based on your mission performance, whether JC has heard of JoJo Fine or not.
whether JC took a violent approach or not in Hell's Kitchen, and whether JC
has spoken to or killed Joe Greene.
Walton Simons - Brig: Simons will have different dialogue based on whether the
player has visited Manderley or not before talking to him, and if the player
manages to kill the terrorists in the jail cell.
Sam Carter - Armory: Carter will have alternate dialogue based on the player's
performance in the previous mission and if they skipped any objectives,
whether they took a violent/non-violent approach, what equipment they need and
whether their inventory is full when they acquire an item.
Jaime Reyes - Medical: Reyes will have an alternate line of dialogue based on
the number of UNATCO casualties in the previous missions.
Wounded Soldier - Medical: The soldier standing by Reyes will have alternate
dialogue if JC talked to the other wounded soldier in the room.
Shannon - Lower Level: Shannon will be much more hostile towards you if you
walked in on her in the bathroom during your previous visit.
Men In Black - UNATCO Base Front Door: The two MIB's outside the base will
have alternate dialogue based on whether or not JC interfered with Simons'
interrogation in the brig.

5) Mission 4 - Airfield (DXA500)
======================================================================
5.1) Mission 4a - Battery Park (DXA501)
Curly - Battery Park Homeless Camp - Curly will have alternate dialogue based
on whether the player obtained the "underworld" password from the homeless man
being harassed in the Hell's Kitchen basketball court in the previous mission.
Veteran - Battery Park: The veteran will have alternate lines based on how
many rifle clips the player buys from him, as well as whether they have money
to buy the item.
Harvey Filben - Battery Park Subway Station: Filben will have alternate
dialogue if he wasn't spoken to on Liberty Island, if the player spared/killed
the NSF commander and if they already spoke to Curly.

5.2) Mission 4b - Underground Subway Station (DXA502)
Charlie Faun - Underground Subway Station: Charlie will have alternate
dialogue if the player unblocked the water main before speaking to him, as
well as whether JC knows about the NSF using the mole people hideout as a
base.
Lenny - Underground Subway Station Men's Washroom: Lenny will have alternate
dialogue if the player has killed Rock the drug dealer before talking to him.
El Ray - Underground Subway Station Upper Platform: El Rey has different
dialogue based on several circumstances, including whether JC knocked
out/killed Rock before talking to him, whether or not the rest of the Rooks
are dead and whether Charlie told JC about El Rey's merchandise. If the player
kills the Rooks and confronts El Ray, then has a full inventory when
obtaining the LAM, JC has an alternate line of dialogue.

5.3) Mission 4c - Mole People Hideout (DXA503)
NSF Terrorists - Mole People Hideout: Normally, the terrorists are hostile,
but they will give alternate dialogue and become passive if the player talks
to the NSF commander in the hidden room first before going near them.
Mole Kid - Mole People Hideout: JC will have alternate dialogue with the boy
who tells him about the secret room if he already accessed it and killed the
NSF commander.
Kevin Bradley - Mole People Hideout: JC will have alternate dialogue with
Bradley if he already met the NSF commander, and either knocked him out/killed
him.
NSF Commander - Mole People Hideout: The commander will have alternate
dialogue based on whether JC has spoken to the mole people before encountering
him.

Alex Jacobson - Airfield Ambient: Alex will have different dialogue after each
barrel of Ambrosia is found, based on whether the player has found the other
barrels first or not and where.
Paul Denton - Airfield Hangar: Paul will have additional dialogue if the
player chooses to kill the NSF troops in the hangar, and alternate dialogue
based on whether or not JC was violent/non-violent in the previous mission.
Harold - Airfield Hangar: JC will have an additional line of dialogue if he
attempts to buy the shotgun shells or mod while his inventory is full.
Anna Navarre - 747: Anna has alternate dialogue based on whether you kill
Lebedev or let her do it, and based on JC's performance in the previous
mission.
Juan Lebedev - 747: Lebedev will have an additional cutscene and ambient
dialogue if JC chooses to kill Anna instead of him.
Alex Jacobson - 747: Alex will have additional dialogue if the player chose to
kill Anna before or after she talked with JC on the 747.
Gunther Hermann - Airfield Post-Completion: JC and Gunther will have alternate
dialogue based on whether JC killed Lebedev, Anna killed Lebedev or JC killed
Anna.
UNATCO Troops - Private Terminal: If the player heads back down the elevator
near the helipad after the airfield is secured, back to the private terminal,
they will encounter several UNATCO troops discussing the takeover of the
location.

5.5) Mission 4e - UNATCO 3rd Visit (DXA505)
Alex Jacobson - Front Gate: Alex will have alternate dialogue based on whether
Lebedev is alive or dead, and in his office, whether Anna is alive or dead and
whether JC spared or killed Lebedev.
Private Lloyd - Front Desk: Lloyd will have alternate dialogue based on
Lebedev's condition (alive/dead), and whether Anna/JC killed him.
Scott - Retinal Scanner Station: Scott will have an alternate line of dialogue
based on whether Anna is alive or dead.
UNATCO Troops - Base Ambient: The troops in the base will acknowledge whether
or not Anna was killed during the last mission, and whether or not JC killed
Lebedev.
Janice Reed - Manderley's Office: Janice will have alternate dialogue based on
whether or not JC has spoken to Jaime in the break room, and whether the
player spoke to Paul at the 747.
Joseph Manderley - Manderley's Office: Manderley will have alternate dialogue
based on whether JC killed Lebedev or not, and whether Anna is alive or dead.
Jaime Reyes - Break Room: Jaime will have alternate dialogue based on JC's
current health. If Anna is alive, JC will have alternate dialogue based on
whether he spared or let Anna execute Lebedev, as well as whether JC has
already visited Manderley or not.
Shannon - Lower Level: Shannon will be more hostile to JC if the player walked

15.1) Mission 14a - New West Coast Sub Base (DXA161)
Dr. Corwell - Sub Base: Corwell will have alternate dialogue based on whether
the player killed the karkian in one of the containment pens. She will also
have alternate dialogue if the player swims through the karkian tank before
emerging from the hatch located next to her (normally inaccessible).
Mechanic - Sub Base: The mechanic will have additional dialogue if you speak
to him after returning from the Ocean Lab.
Gary Savage - Sub Base: Savage will have alternate dialogue based on whether
Tiffany lived or died during the Gas Station rescue.
Walton Simons - Ocean Lab: Simons will have alternate dialogue if he was
spoken to in the UNATCO breakroom or in the cathedral, or not spoken to at all
in face-to-face conversation.

Dr. Bernard - Missile Silo: Bernard will have alternate dialogue based on
whether the player talks to him for the first time before or after redirecting
the missile to hit Area 51.
Jock - Missile Silo: Jock will have alternate dialogue based on whether the
mechanic at Everett's apartment was killed or not.

16) Mission 15 - Area 51 (DXA170)

Jock - Bunker: Jock will have alternate dialogue, and his aircraft will be
blown up, if the mechanic in Everett's bunker wasn't killed.
Tracer Tong - Bunker: Tong will have additional dialogue if Jock was killed.
Xander - Bunker: JC will have alternate dialogue if the bunker doors were
already opened before speaking to Xander.
Walton Simons - Bunker: Simons will appear and have an additional conversation
with JC if he wasn't killed in the Ocean Lab.
Morgan Everett - Sector 1: JC and Everett will have an alternate conversation
if Jock was killed at the beginning of the mission. If the player skips this
conversation (through cheats), Everett will have an alternate conversation
when the player enters Sector 3.
Mechanic (Jerri) - Sector 2: Jerri will have additional dialogue urging JC to
leave if he is spoken to while in stealth and without being attacked by MJ12
troops.
Bob Page - Sector 2: Page will have alternate dialogue based on the player's
health after the elevator fight with the MJ12 troops and Man in Black.
Paul Denton & Gary Savage - Sector 3: If Paul is alive, he will appear just
before JC enters Sector 4, and will discuss the player's choices. If Paul is
dead, Savage will appear and speak most of the same lines.
Morgan Everett - Sector 4: Everett will have additional dialogue urging JC to
rethink his choice if the player chooses to go for the New Dark Age or Merge
with Helios endings.
Tracer Tong - Sector 4: Tong will have additional dialogue telling JC he is
wasting time if the player chooses to deactivate the fusion devices.
Helios - Sector 4: Helios will have additional dialogue urging the player to
reconsider if they decide to destroy the facility.

Airfield: Does Paul Denton have any additional dialogue if you make him
hostile/damage him enough? (Design Document concept)
UNATCO Transmitter - 'Ton Hotel: While it has been written on the Deus Ex Wiki
and other sites that Jojo can be reportedly be spoken to prior to his
confrontation with Gilbert and Sandra Renton (that is, if both of them are
alive) and JC can be convinced to kill both of them on his behalf, this author
has found no evidence in the game script or otherwise to suggest this is
possible. If you have audio or video evidence of this supposed conversation,
email me at
[email protected] and I will amend the FAQ accordingly.
UNATCO Transmitter - Battery Park: Are there any changes if you "stay loyal"
to UNATCO by killing Lebedev, leaving Anna alive, having the "UNATCO's not
perfect" conversation with Paul and ghosting through the locked subway grate?
(Note: Youtube user IlliterateChild experimented with this situation and
discovered that the troops will run up but not talk to you when you arrive in
Battery Park. I need to do more testing to validate this situation and see if
any lines from Jock are changed.)
Champs Elysees: Do any/all Paris citizens (after Nicolette is discovered and
is waiting by the helicopter) have any unique reactions if they weren't spoken
to at all beforehand?
Area 51: Does Walton Simons/Xander have any alternate dialogue if the player
uses the ventilation fan to get to the lower levels of the complex, completes
any/most mission objectives and returns to the surface to speak with them?
