Introduction
============

This is an in-depth FAQ for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a first-person shooter
that follows cyborg security chief Adam Jensen as he investigates an attack on
Sarif Industries. In spite of deploring most FPS games, I played the original
Deus Ex because I got it for free, and I fell in love with it. The sequel Deus
Ex: Invisible War was a decent game, but it failed to live up to the
expectations produced by its predecessor. Human Revolution is a prequel that
stays loyal to the original game while reinventing some of its gameplay. It's
an excellent game that anyone who enjoys stealth games should get into.

This FAQ came about because of my desire to compare the weapons to each other
to see which ones were best for my style of play. Since I could not find a
similar FAQ anywhere, I decided to share the information I discovered here. The
information in this FAQ applies to The Missing Link DLC as well.

There isn't one best set of weapons in the game. Which weapons you choose will
depend on your own playing style and preferences. Someone doing a non-lethal
stealth play through will need a different weapon set than someone playing a
run-and-gun game. At the very least, I recommend having two to four different
weapons on hand so that you can handle the variety of situations that will come
up in the game. Also, if you are doing a non-lethal play through, you will
probably still need at least one lethal weapon for bosses.

How to Read This FAQ
====================

The weapons are listed below roughly in order from least valuable to most
valuable in terms of purchase price and are given the name provided when you
look at a weapon in the game. Several items are only available through a pre-
order bonus or DLC. These weapons are marked accordingly, indicating which pack
must be ordered to receive them. For each weapon, its statistics are listed
below it. A description of each statistic is as follows.

Full Name:       This is the full name of the weapon as shown when you examine
                it on the inventory screen.

Use:             This is taken directly from the weapon's description on the
                inventory screen. It indicates the main use for the weapon.

Lethality:       Indicates whether the weapon will kill opponents or merely
                knock them unconscious.

Iron Sight:      "Yes" means that the weapon has an Iron Sight mode. This
                centers the weapon on the screen and lets you use its sight to
                help with aiming. "Scope" means that the weapon has a scope,
                and going into Iron Sight mode will let you zoom in on targets
                to make long-range shots easier. "N/A" means that the weapon
                has neither a sight nor a scope, so it does not have an Iron
                Sight mode at all.

Laser:           Indicates whether the Laser Targeting System upgrade can be
                applied to the weapon. An "N/A" means that it cannot.

Silencer:        Indicates whether the Silencer upgrade can be applied to the
                weapon. An "N/A" means that it cannot.

Special Upgrade: Some upgrades have special effects that only apply to one or
                two weapons. If one of these upgrades is compatible with a
                weapon, it will be listed here. If the weapon does not have a
                special upgrade, this will show "N/A" instead.

Rate of Fire:    This is a relative indication of how fast the weapon fires on
                a scale of 1 to 10, taken from the in-game description. It can
                be upgraded with the Rate-of-Fire Upgrade. Both the initial
                rating and maximum rating are listed. For example, a rating of
                2-4 means that it starts out with a rating of 2 but can be
                upgraded up to a rating of 4. If only one number is listed,
                this statistic cannot be upgraded.

Reload Speed:    This is a relative indication of how quickly you can reload
                the weapon on a scale of 1 to 10, taken from the in-game
                description. It can be upgraded with the Reload Speed Upgrade.
                Both the initial rating and maximum rating are listed. For
                example, a rating of 4-5 means that it starts out with a
                rating of 4 but can be upgraded up to a rating of 5. If only
                one number is listed, this statistic cannot be upgraded.

Damage Output:   This is a relative indication of how much damage each round of
                the weapon does on a scale of 0 to 10, taken from the in-game
                description. It can be upgraded with the Damage Upgrade. Both
                the initial rating and maximum rating are listed. For example,
                a rating of 3-7 means that it starts out with a rating of 3
                but can be upgraded up to a rating of 7. If only one number is
                listed, this statistic cannot be upgraded. A rating of 0 means
                that the weapon is non-lethal.

Ammo Capacity:   This is a relative indication of how much ammunition the
                weapon can hold on a scale of 1 to 10, taken from the in-game
                description. It can be upgraded with the Ammo Capacity
                Upgrade. Both the initial rating and maximum rating are
                listed. For example, a rating of 7-10 means that it starts out
                with a rating of 7 but can be upgraded up to a rating of 10.
                If only one number is listed, this statistic cannot be
                upgraded.

Size:            This indicates the size of the weapon based on the number of
                squares it takes up in the inventory grid. A size of 2x6 (12)
                means that the weapon takes up two vertical squares and six
                horizontal squares for a total of 12 squares. All weapons can
                be flipped, so a size of 2x6 can also be expressed as 6x2.

Ammo Type:       The type of ammunition that the weapon uses.

Purchase Price:  The number of credits needed to buy a weapon from a dealer.
                This price does not take discounts into consideration.

Sell Price:      The number of credits you get for selling a weapon to a
                dealer. This assumes that there are no upgrades on the weapon.
                Each upgrade will increase the sell price.

Missing Link:    Indicates whether the weapon can be obtained in The Missing
                Link DLC. Since The Missing Link has a separate inventory
                system from the main game, this can help with weapon planning
                for the DLC.

Notes:           Any special notes about the weapon will be listed here. If
                there are no notes, this section will be left out.

Review:          This is my personal take on the weapon, indicating when it
                might be useful.

Review: The trusty 10mm Pistol may not be the best weapon in the game, but it's
definitely the most versatile. Its beginning stats are adequate, but not
exceptional. However, it can accept more upgrades than any other weapon, and a
fully upgraded pistol is a force to be reckoned with. Ammo for the pistol is
very common, so there's little risk of running out. With the Armor-Piercing
System, headshots from the 10mm Pistol can get one-hit kills even on enemies
with head armor. If you're not sure which weapon to stick with, you can't go
wrong with the 10mm Pistol no matter your playing style.

Stun Gun

Review: The Stun Gun is a decent weapon for non-lethal play. However, bear in
mind that a takedown can be used in most situations where you could use the
Stun Gun, netting more experience. In spite of this, the Stun Gun still has its
uses when you must confront multiple targets and don't have time to recharge an
energy cell. It's also advantageous against bosses, most of whom can be
debilitated with use of the Stun Gun, leaving them open to attack from other
weapons.

Review: This upgrade to the 10mm Pistol does quite a bit more damage. Ammo for
it is much less common, so it's probably not wise to make it your primary
weapon. If you're playing a non-lethal game, this is an excellent weapon to
keep for bosses. The Exploding Rounds Package is essential for this purpose
though.

Machine Pistol

Review: Like the 10mm Pistol, this is a good general weapon that you find early
and can be useful throughout the entire game with the right upgrades. However,
there are better rapid-fire weapons, so this one loses its effectiveness much
sooner. It might be worth holding onto it in the beginning, but once the Combat
Rifle comes up, you can probably ditch the Machine Pistol.

Review: The problem with the P.E.P.S. is that most people doing a non-lethal
play through are probably also doing a stealth play through, and P.E.P.S. is
anything but stealthy. There are few situations where the P.E.P.S. would be
more effective than strategic use of the Stun Gun and a few takedowns. On top
of that, P.E.P.S. ammo isn't all that common. I wouldn't recommend the P.E.P.S.
in most situations. However, it is arguably the best weapon for the final area
as long as you aren't trying to get the stealth bonuses.

Review: This update to the Machine Pistol is superior in pretty much every way.
You will see it fairly early in the game, and it's a common weapon among
enemies. Ammo shouldn't be a problem at all. It's particularly useful against
enemies in a large group, more so once you get the Target-Seeking System. If
you're not doing a non-lethal game, this is a great choice for your primary
weapon.

Shotgun

Review: You'll start seeing this weapon around the same time as the Combat
Rifle. I honestly wasn't a fan of it. It does a lot of damage, but it's a
close-range weapon, and you usually want to take out enemies before they get
that close. It can be effective against bosses, although there are better
weapons for that. The Shotgun isn't a bad weapon, and a run-and-gun player
might get some use out of it, but most people will want something else. Note
that the Burst Round System isn't necessarily a good upgrade for human enemies.
Most of them will go down from one hit from the Shotgun without this upgrade,
so the Burst Round System will only result in wasted ammo. It's only an
advantage against robots or bosses.

Review: For a weapon that you have to pay real money to get, this isn't all
that great. It has better starting stats than the regular Shotgun, but it's
otherwise an inferior weapon. It has high damage without being upgraded, but
its slow firing rate and dismal ammo capacity make it useless against multiple
enemies or bosses. An upgraded Shotgun is more effective. I don't think that
this weapon is worth it.

A reply from kokushishin offered a different opinion: "I think you're
understating the Silverback. It has a fast reload and it needs less shots to
take out enemies overall. It also takes up less room than the normal shotgun."

Tranquilizer Rifle

Review: If you're doing a non-lethal play through, this weapon is
indispensable. It's the only non-lethal weapon that is effective at a distance,
and it's completely silent to boot. Even players doing a lethal game will get
some use out of this weapon since unconscious enemies will distract other
enemies, giving you an opening to go in for your attack. If you want to remain
stealthy, this is one of the most useful weapons in the game.

Crossbow

Review: This is a great weapon for stealth players, mainly because it's
completely silent. It has a long range, but the arc it fires in may make
headshots more difficult. Its weakness is that it's a single-shot weapon, so
it's only good against isolated enemies. If you don't have access to the
Silenced Sniper Rifle, this weapon is vital if you want to remain stealthy.

Heavy Rifle

Notes:           It takes time for the barrel to speed up, creating a delay in
                firing this weapon. Extended use without the Cooling System
                will cause the weapon to overheat, making it unusable for a
                short time.

Review: Available midway through the game, this is the strongest rapid-fire
weapon you'll find. It can mow down groups of opponents with ease. It's
probably not a good idea to make this your primary weapon because ammo can take
up a lot of inventory space. However, it's great to hold onto it for stronger
enemies or bosses. Non-lethal players may want to make this their main boss-
killing weapon.

I received this comment from kokushishin: "One full stack of heavy rifle ammo
(200) is more efficient than the several stacks of 50s you'd need with the
others."

Sniper Rifle

Review: The Sniper Rifle has the longest range of any weapon in the game. It
does a lot of damage, especially when it's upgraded, and it's easier to get
headshots with it than any other weapon. It fires quickly enough that you can
probably take out a few opponents before reloading. The problem with it is its
noise. A shot from this weapon will alert every enemy around to your presence.
This makes it difficult to use for stealth players. If you're trying to be
stealthy, you're probably better off with the Crossbow.

Laser Rifle

Notes:           The beam from this weapon can pass through walls and other
                solid objects.

Review: You won't find the Laser Rifle until late in the game, but it is quite
handy. It can cut through enemies like butter, and being able to fire through
walls lets you get in some surprise attacks, especially if you got the Wall-
Penetrating Imager augmentation. The main problem with this weapon is that ammo
is rare, and it drains that ammo as quickly as it drains life from its targets.
That greatly limits how much you can use it. If you're doing okay with your
other weapons, you can probably skip the Laser Rifle. It is worth noting that
this weapon's ability to fire through walls makes it the best weapon to use
against the final boss.

Silenced Sniper Rifle

Review: Another pre-order bonus weapon, this one actually does have some value.
It sacrifices damage to make the Sniper Rifle quieter. Of course, this is a big
deal for stealthy players since the noisiness of the Sniper Rifle was a huge
mark against it. As long as you get headshots, the lower damage shouldn't be a
problem. The Silence Sniper Rifle can hold more ammo than the Crossbow,
allowing you to take out more targets before reloading. Overall, this is a
compromise between the Sniper Rifle and the Crossbow, so which one you pick
will depend on which characteristics are more important to you.

Grenade Launcher

Review: This weapon is an alternative to the Rocket Launcher. It has a lot of
the same problems that the Rocket Launcher has, but it has the advantage of
taking up half the inventory space. It can also fire more quickly than the
Rocket Launcher. The problem is that you won't get this weapon until very late
in the game, and ammo is extremely limited. It's particularly useful against a
single boss, but other than that, it's probably not worth it.

Notes:           This weapon does explosive damage that will affect all targets
                within an area upon impact.

Review: In most first-person shooters, the Rocket Launcher is one of the best
weapons to get. However, Deus Ex doesn't play like other FPS games. The
explosion caused by the Rocket Launcher eliminates any chance of being
stealthy. Using this against a single human, or even a group of humans, is
overkill, especially since there just isn't that much ammo available for it.
It's one of the only weapons effective against robots and turrets, but grenades
serve that purpose much better. On top of that, you'll need to use a good chunk
of your inventory space to hold the Rocket Launcher and its ammo. There are
definitely times when the Rocket Launcher is nice to have, but when it comes
down to it, you can make better use of that inventory space.

Burke's Revolver

Notes:           The Laser Targeting System is attached to this weapon by
                default, so there is no need for the upgrade. This weapon only
                exists in The Missing Link and cannot be obtained in the main
                game.

Review: This unique weapon is basically an upgraded Revolver. It's a good
general weapon in The Missing Link, especially since there aren't many upgrades
to be found in this DLC. The problem is that The Missing Link is geared around
stealth, making noisy weapons like this of limited use. On the other hand, it's
probably the best weapon to have on hand in the DLC for those situations where
you do need to shed some blood.

Plasma Rifle

Notes:           This weapon can hit multiple targets in a small area. Extended
                use without the Cooling System will cause the weapon to
                overheat, making it unusable for a short time.

Review: The Plasma Rifle is arguably the best overall weapon in the game. It
can incinerate enemies so quickly that its actual stats don't mean a whole lot.
The problem is that it's the last weapon you find, so by the time you get it,
you don't really need it much anymore. It's nice to have against the final
boss, but other weapons can also be effective. Whether or not you want to
switch over to this one for the final bout is up to you. Note that there are
very few weapon upgrades available after you obtain the Plasma Rife, so if you
want to fully upgrade it, you'll have to hold on to upgrades from earlier in
the game.
