I. Introduction
I used to play the hell out of Trojan in my youth. Back when NES games were
$50 a pop and of course we only had a few, friends would trade games back and
forth, and when I got my hands on Trojan, the exchange became permanent. I
never really liked T&C Surf Designs anyway. I found the replay value
incredibly high, compounded with the intense graphics. While terrible by
today's standards, Trojan stood out with Rygar in my mind as one of the best
games I had ever beaten.
Years later, I ran into a machine called an "Ultracade," with the original
arcade version of the game, and while there were some major differences, after
playing it, it inspired me to run to a local game store and buy Trojan again
for the NES (luckily, they had one in stock). It isn't pretty, but it's still
fun, and if today someone asked me to buy it for $50, I'd laugh in his face,
but the $3 price tag in the gaming store was just about perfect. Pick it up
if you have the opportunity - it's worth it.
..............................................................................
II. Story
English speaking writers just weren't around back in the day. Apparently
Nintendo had plot writing contests with fourteen year old fan boys to boost
popularity. The following is the epic masterpiece from the back of the box.
***********
Prepare yourself for the exciting confrontation with the ancient evil army.
You are at the controls. The fate of throngs of suffering people held hostage
by the brutal king's troops await freedom by Trojan!
Release your imagination. Grab hold of the controls. For you are Trojan.
Happy. Light-hearted. Spirited. Yet, often considered irresponsible.
But Trojan...you are a superb physical being who's mastered the martial arts.
Fated with relentless energy and determination, you muster courage,
embarking on the challenge of invading the enemy's territory to rescue the
captives from the army of the evil empire.
You manipulate the controls, creating movement of Trojan's protective
armored shield and the wielding of his shining sword.
As Trojan, you battle knife throwing enemy troops. But watch out, for if
you are hit with your opponent's weapons, you would lose your shield and
sword, and would fight with your bare hands.
Can Trojan and you successfully defeat the enemy and rescue the people of
the world? You control their destiny!
***********
It's painful like the Resident Evil voiceovers. "Just relax...and...play."
Wheaties boxes are more enthralling. Searching on for any sign of story, I
checked the manual.
***********
You are TROJAN warrior, master of the martial arts. With your sword and
shield you must fight through 7 different screens and defeat the brutal
ruling King of your enemies.
***********
I guess the creators were more interested in translating the game from the
arcade rather than writing a decent story. Fan fiction is out there and is
quite readable, but don't expect anything throughout the game itself.

IV. Game Modes
A) One Player
A single player travels the seven stages alone.
B) Two Players
Two players alternate turns fighting through the seven levels. When one
player's lives are depleted, his or her game is over and the other continues
on.
C) vs. Game
Two players battle each other in an early style fighting game. Both players
fight the same and have identical energy. One plays as Trojan and player two
represents Achilles' Trojan minion.
..............................................................................
V. Items
A) High Jump
Represented as a boot, when collected, Trojan can jump extremely high. This
is executed by pushing straight up on the control pad. It lasts indefinitely
while in a manhole bonus stage (the only way to exit is to jump) and
fourteen seconds during the game.
B) Rat
Rats, when located, will award you with 1000 points and flee the screen.
C) Power Up
Two power up items are located in the game. The first is in the second part
of the first stage and the second is in Hiding Place 2, part one. When
one is collected, Trojan's attack power will double and if both are
combined, Trojan's power is almost tripled (enemies with eight points
of power can only receive three hits of damage). Once Trojan dies, his
power up items disappear and cannot be regained, so it is difficult to
get both.
D) Speed Up
The speed up power is located in Hiding Place 2, part one, next to the
game's second Power Up. Trojan will double his walking speed for the rest
of the stage, or until he dies.
E) Life Restore
During the game, Trojan will encounter several floating hearts. They
will appear, float upward for a second, then rapidly fly downward off
the screen, giving him a few seconds to grab it. These hearts completely
restore Trojan's life bars.
F) Key
Keys are necessary to progress during the stage Hiding Place 2. Sometimes
they are found in secret rooms or will fall after a boss enemy is defeated,
or sometimes they are simply hanging on the wall. When you reach an empass,
look for a key.
G) Shiruken
The Shiruken is located in Hiding Place 3 and awards Trojan with 10,000
points.
H) Majic Box
The manual refers to such an item, and I can only assume they are talking
about the floating potato pods you will find on a couple of stages. Of
course, the manual refers to Goblin as "The Hunchback" that throws magic
balls at Trojan. Slash these "boxes" once to reveal an item (which may not
be to your liking.)
I) Extra Life
Represented as the NES typical "1up," these coveted items will increase
Trojan's stored lives by one.
..............................................................................
VI. Statistics
A) Life Bars
Trojan begins every stage with eight energy bars located at the top
of the screen. In between stages, it is fully restored, but any lost
life will carry on from part one of a stage to part two. Find a life
restoring heart to replenish Trojan's life.
B) Time
200 seconds (or what Nintendo likes to call seconds) are all a player will
receive at the beginning of every stage. When the clock ticks down to zero,
that player loses one life and begins at the beginning of the stage. Any
lost time will carry over from part one of a stage to part two.
C) Score
At the upper left side of the screen is a player's tallying score, and in
the center on top is the high score of any player since the game has been
turned on. Bonus lives are awarded at 20,000 points and 100,000 points.
D) Lives
The number of lives a player has left is indicated in the upper left corner.
When all of these lives are depleted, a player's game is over.
..............................................................................
VII. Enemies
A) Minions
1) Smasher
Smasher appears on the first six stages. Simple to beat, he swings a
mace and can receive one hit of damage. Trojan is rewarded with 200 points
for defeating him.
2) Slasher
Slasher will show up with smashers usually and throws knives and pipe
bombs, both of which can be blocked with a shield. If the pipe bomb is
blocked, however, Trojan will lose his sword and shield and must progress
defenseless until they can be reclaimed later in the stage (it usually
isn't that far down the road). Slasher takes two hits of damage without
any power ups and is worth 500 points to Trojan.
3) Hidden Archer
Sewers serve as cover for these nuisances. They will peek their heads
out and shoot dangerous arrows at Trojan, which can be blocked by the
shield. Trojan receives a large 2000 points for taking out the hidden
archer.
4) Red Archer
The red archers fire arrows the same as hidden archers, but will do it
from high above. They appear only on stage 2-1 and are unreachable
(I've tried and tried to find a high jump boot on this stage - if anyone
finds one, please e-mail me).
5) Skyrogyro
All the way up to the sixth level, these insane helicopter freaks fly
around, dropping bombs on Trojan and can only be reached with a high jump
boot. Destroy or block their bombs for 50 points, or jump up there and
kill the source for a whopping 2000.
6) Mad Bomber
On the first stage, these crazy men stick their heads out just long
enough to throw a stick of dynomite at you and then tuck away from
where they came for cover. They can be reached with a high jump boot
and reward Trojan with 2000 points.
7) Barbarian
This fish like creature appears only once on stage 2-2, spits fireballs
at Trojan, takes three hits to kill, and doesn't provide any points.
The good side is that it's easy to see him coming and little strategy
or skill is needed to defeat him.
8) Bat
These creatures will spawn from Goblin's throwing star (or whatever it
is) or from a "Majic Box." They can be easily slashed or blocked with
your shield.
9) Pirhana
These fish will attack Trojan from both sides on stage 2-2 and are
difficult to deal with along with the skyrogyro above. They can
thankfully be easily defeated with either your sword or shield.
10) Bomb
Bombs will fall from holes in the wall in certain areas and cannot
be destroyed. After they roll for a bit, they will explode, damaging
Trojan if he's near, so learn their patterns quickly and get your
timing down.
B) Bosses
1) Mamushi
The most prolific fighter in the game, he is the boss of the very
first stage, but appears throughout the game and is probably the
most vicious enemy you will encounter. He throws axes both high
and low and is worth a measley 200 points for Trojan.
2) Iron Arm
Iron Arm, as his name describes, has the detachable appendage which
he will throw at Trojan and return to his body on command. He throws
his arm both high and low and returns it quickly, so be careful. He
appears periodically throughout the game and is worth 200 points for
Trojan.
3) Armadillon
This scaly creature is easy to defeat with proper timing. He will
roll himself into a ball and throw himself at Trojan, back and
forth across the screen. Eventually, he will come out of his safe
position and walk at Trojan, where he is vulnerable, but during this,
he will shoot deadly fireballs from his mouth, so hit him quickly.
Like all the bosses, he is worth 200 points.
4) Goblin
If you don't know what you're doing, Goblin can be a pesky
creature. He jumps constantly and fires speedy projectiles at
Trojan which transform into bats when they have reached their
destination. With a lot going on, he can be tricky, and he is worth
the usual 200 points.
5) Muscler
This barbaric monster attacks Trojan, albeit slowly, with a giant
club. His moves are predictable, but don't get cocky - he hits hard.
And he's worth 200 points.
6) Trojan
This carbon copy of you has all the capabilities you do and is just
as crazy. Hopefully you have powered up to give you the advantage
when you dispatch this guardian for 200 points.
7) King Shriek
When he breaks out of the wall, the flying debris can damage you.
This should give you some idea of the power of King Shriek. He
swings a huge mace over his head and damages Trojan almost as
much as the boss Achilles. And just when you think he's out of
the way for good, another one comes out of the wall! He is found
on level 6-2, just before the battle with Achilles and each one
is worth 200 points.
8) Achilles
He doesn't move very fast, but when you're this strong, you don't have
to. He swings a sword bigger than you that will mutilate you if you're not
crafty. And when you finally destroy the leader of the largest evil force
this side of the atomic holocaust, you'll receive the giant cash reward of
200 points.
..............................................................................
VIII. Bonus Levels
On stages 1 and 4 you will encounter manholes which will contain treasures
(and possibly enemies). It is in these that you will receive both the Power
Up ("P") and the Speed Up ("S"), as well as some other treasures. These areas
are described in detail in the walkthrough.
..............................................................................
IX. Walkthrough
A) Overview
With basically no story and nothing to rely on other than your sword, all
you need to do is slash and hack at everything, Grand Theft Auto style.
The game is basically linear, moving from left to right on the side
scrolling stages (1,2,4, and 6) and moving down when triggered during the
elevator stages (3 and 5). Let's just say you won't have a difficult time
figuring out when and where to turn. Power Up items are crucial to making the
game easier, but continuing is always an option and it's fairly easy anyway.
With a bit of practice, you'll find the enemies are all glitchy and
predictable and it shouldn't take you more than one life and 20 minutes to
beat this game. The titles for the stages were taken from the arcade
counterpart of Trojan, as there is no reference to much in the manual and
nothing in the game itself. I improvised where needs insisted.
B) Stage 1 - The First Stage
1) Part 1
Items - High Jump, 3 Rats, Life Restore
Enemies - Smasher, Slasher, Hidden Archer, Mad Bomber, Goblin (In bonus area)
Boss - Mamushi
There's not much to do here except walk right. Of course, you're thrown
right into the action and must defeat Smashers and Slashers. The slashers
only take one hit and are simple, but there's always quite a few of them. A
good method for fighting them is to crouch, as when they swing high, it will
go right over your head, but if they go low, you are in a position to block.
The Smashers, however, will throw knives and pipe bombs at you, but they
will throw them either high or low, so again, take the crouching option and
block the knives. Though, if you block the pipe bombs, you will be left
defenseless until you recover your weaponry later in the stage (It's better
to take the hit - trust me).
Anyway, battle these simple fighters until you reach the manhole cover,
which is guarded by the Hidden Archer and leads to the bonus area. He will
fire low and it is possible you won't be in a position to block with the
enemies around you, so your best bet is to just jump over his arrow, crouch
next to him, and slash him. When he is defeated, the manhole will be open
for you, so just drop right in.
On the wall behind you, you will see the High Jump item, represented by
the boot. You should also see Goblin, jumping around like a maniac. He is
a boss in later stages, but he is always easy. You don't want to worry
about the items until you have defeated Goblin, so swing away at him while
he is still on this side of the screen. He takes a total of 8 hits, so
it may take some time. If he jumps away to the other side, quickly run
into his former position and face him from the opposite side of the screen.
Block his projectiles and swing away at the bats when you have to and soon
he will jump back. This is where the little flaw in game design comes in.
Stand your ground under him with your shield drawn, pointing up. He will
land on top of it and get hit consistently until he falls. Throughout the
game, Goblin can be defeated in this manner.
Now then, onto the items. Grab the boot and check out the layout of this
manhole. There are two extrusions in the wall and a hole in the wall on the
left side. On the right, there is a ladder, but don't jump there until you're
ready to exit. Grab the boot and move towards the left side of the right
extrusion. Jump up and swing until you find the Life Restore represented by
a floating heart, but grab it quick or it will float right offscreen. Swinging
at walls or even thin air can sometimes turn up items, so don't be afraid to
explore - they gave you plenty of time. As for the rest in this room, just
above that hole in the wall are three rats worth 1000 points each, which
should put you well on your way to that 20,000 point free guy. When you've
found all three rats, go ahead and exit the secret room.
Back up top, walk to the right and you'll find some Mad Bombers sticking
their heads out of the windows. Carefully avoid the sticks of dynomite they
chuck out of those windows, which will explode shortly after landing. You
should have the high jump item for a bit longer, so if it's not too heated
below with dynomite and enemies, jump up and waste them for 2000 points
each. When you're exhausted, move to the right until the screen stops and
you'll find your first boss, Mamushi.
Boss - Mamushi
Unfortunately, you won't have acquired a Power Up yet, so the Mamushi are
going to take the full 8 hits to defeat. One will drop down and immediately
attack you, while the other waits on the opposite side of the screen for his
partner to be defeated, when he'll jump down and axe away. The strategy is
simple - Mamushi will throw axes both high and low at you, so crouching with
your shield drawn is necessary. You could stay in this position all day
without getting hit, but time is running out. When he throws an axe high over
your head, it will fly to the opposite side of the screen, giving you time to
hit him once. He is able to swing his axe while there is one flying on the
screen, but he can't throw one. Just wait for the opportunities and he is
defeated easily. He isn't so easy in later levels when you actually need to
run from him, but just be patient here and he'll fall quickly. When both are
defeated, you have finished level 1-1. You will receive this message (which
you will receive after the first part of every stage):
NICE FIGHT
BONUS POINTS 3000
And that's that.
2) Part 2
Items - Life Restore, High Jump, Power Up
Enemies - Slasher, Smasher, Hidden Archer, Red Armadillon (In bonus area),
Mad Bomber
Boss - Iron Arm
Part 2 begins exactly like Part 1, so run to the right to the manhole cover
and kill the Hidden Archer before he can fire at you, but this time, don't
immediately jump down into the manhole. Instead, jump over it and a Life
Restore heart will appear. It will float up and you need to jump with proper
timing to grab it. When you do, hopefully you got it, and you will drop down
into the manhole where you will meet your first Armadillon.
The color of these creatures denote their power level, so the Red Armadillon
can take only 4 hits (2 with a Power Up), whereas the Green Armadillon
normally takes 8. Unfortunately, this easy Armadillon is the last one you'll
see - the rest in the game are green. But they're easy nonetheless.
Immediately, he will curl into a ball and roll towards you. He will hit you
twice, so it is very important that you jump over his attack. I find it's
best to jump towards the direction from which he is rolling (basically into
him), rather than straight up - it gives you a bit more latitude for error.
When he reaches the other side of the screen, he may keep rolling and come
at you again or open himself up for an attack. When he does, get over there
and hit him quick before he spits some fire at you. If he does this, even
if you block it, he will quickly roll back up and come at you again and you
will have missed your opportunity. After you hit him, get out of there
quickly, because he's just going to ball back up and roll again. His
movements are certainly predictable and after four hits, he's down. Note:
Armadillon will never roll more than four times before revealing himself,
so if he does go to the fourth roll, you can run towards him with confidence
that he will pull out after he reaches the end of the screen.
Now that he's gone, it's time to get the loot. Grab that boot and jump near
the extrusion on the right side of the screen. There's an invaluable Power
Up "P" in there, so make sure you get it before you exit. With this item,
every enemy's power is cut in half! The item stays with you until you die,
and after you leave stage 1-2, you won't be able to get this one again,
so make it last! There are only two in the game and it would be nice to
combine them both later for super power. It's the only item (other than the
High Jump) in this secret area, so jump towards the ladder to exit.
Above, follow the same procedure you did during stage 1-1, attacking the
Mad Bombers if convenient and bring yourself to the final part of the stage -
the boss, Iron Arm.
Boss - Iron Arm
If you can take out Iron Arm with ease, you have this game licked. He attacks
with a strange weapon with a simple pattern, but he does like to mix it up a
bit. He will throw his metal arm out at you, then retract it opposite of
where he threw it. In other words, if he throws it high, it will curve down
and return low. If he throws it low, it will return high. If it is blocked,
it will immediately return to him. That being said, the strategy is simple -
crouch and block. If he throws it low, it will hit your shield, knocking you
back a bit, and his arm is sent right back to him. If he throws it high, it
will go over your head, giving you a second to move in and attack. Only swing
once, though, because right away you'll need to jump the retracting arm. When
you land, crouch and block quickly, as he will throw his arm out again as
soon as he gets it back. Repeat this process until he is defeated, and you'll
receive this message (which you will receive after the second part of every
stage):
CONGRATULATIONS!
BONUS POINTS 5000
LET'S TRY THE NEXT STAGE
GOOD LUCK!
C) Stage 2 - The Craggy Cliff
1) Part 1
Items - None
Enemies - Slasher, Smasher, Red Archer
Boss - Green Armadillon
You will have your first and only experience with the Red Archers on stage
2-1, and unfortunately, I have never discovered a way to defeat them. It
seems a High Jump boot is necessary and there doesn't appear to be one on
the stage. Please e-mail me if you find one.
Anyway, here's the situation. There are Red Archers above and Smashers and
Slashers below. Your best bet as soon as you come on this stage is to walk
right with confidence. From the begininning, you shouldn't have to stop at
all for the passing arrows and you can concentrate on the enemies below. But
if you need to, stop and wipe out the ground troops before you move on.
Very quickly (this is also the shortest stage in the game), you will come
upon a cave area where you will find the boss.
Boss - Green Armadillon
Having fought his red brother on the previous stage, you should be well
prepared for this weak boss. The only difference between this one and the
last is the number of hits it takes, but if you have the Power Up item in
your inventory, it will only take four. But, with or without the power up,
follow the steps in stage 1-2 and take him out, finishing the stage.
2) Part 2
Items - High Jump, Extra Life
Enemies - Skyrogyro, Pirhana, Barbarian
Boss - Goblin
You won't be asking yourself why there is a high jump after you see the
enemies of stage 2-1. Skyrogyro fly above and drop bombs on you, so watch
your step and block over your head when necessary to avoid their attacks.
Move to the right until you hit the water and just jump right in and get
your feet wet - don't panic, it's not a water world. You manuever slower
in the water, but you're only submerged up to your waist, so your attack
and defensive skills are at their best.
About five steps in, swing your sword until you receive the High Jump boot.
This can be used to attack the myriad of Skyrogyro flying above for 2000
points a piece. If you're not trying to break the record, though, skip it
and continue right until you reach the Pirhanas. Now you're in a pickle -
they can attack from either the right or left side and you still have those
helicopter maniacs above you, so be patient and let them swim right into
your shield while you block the bombs from above. The fish can also jump out
of the water, so judge their trajectories properly. Move when you feel
confident and be patient. Close to the end of the water, yet another
enemy, the Barbarian, will jump out at you. This is the only appearance
of him in the game and the best strategy is none at all. Just get in there
and swing away, slicing up him and his fireballs at the same time. He will
retreat a bit with each hit, so get up on him and finish the job with 3 hits.
Unfortunately, when you encounter him, you will temporarily lose your power
up "P" if you have one, so he always takes three hits, but he's easy
nonetheless. When he is defeated and you have come to the end of the water,
swing your sword just before you jump out for an Extra Life (1up)! That
should sit right with you, and you're ready to take on Goblin again as soon
as you jump out of the water.
Boss - Goblin
Fighting Goblin should be done the same way as in the secret area in stage
1-1. As soon as he triggers on the screen, jump back as far as you can to
the left side of the screen and wait for him. Block all of his missile
attacks and wait for him to jump at you from the other side of the screen.
Just like last time, block straight up and he will land on your shield, not
harming you, until he is dead. And now you're ready to move on to your first
elevator stage and a couple of new enemies!
D) Stage 3 - Hiding Place 1
1) Part 1
Items - None
Enemies - Slasher, Smasher, Bombs
Boss - Muscler
Here's how this stage works. There is an elevator leading down on the right
side of the screen from the start. As soon as you step on it, it will trigger
and lower you to the next level. Then, you must go to the left side of the
screen. Every time you go down a level, you must proceed to the opposite
side of the screen until you reach the bottom floor when you will run into
the boss, Muscler. Here's a list of the levels and their enemies:
Levels 1,4 - Smashers will come at you at a maximum of 2 per screen, so
proceed when you feel comfortable. The best way to do this is to attack
them until there are two behind you. Then jump over to the elevator.
Levels 2,5 - Slashers will attack you, starting at opposite sides of the
screen. Block the knives and jump the pipe bombs. If you block them, you'll
lose your weaponry until a lower level, leaving you defenseless.
Levels 3,6 - Bombs will fall from those two holes in the wall. It sounds
chaotic, but time their explosions and you'll be fine.
Boss - Muscler
Muscler's strong, but very slow, and like most of the enemies in Trojan
predictable and easy to cheat. Walk towards him (Don't jump in!) and swing
at him when he's in range of your sword. Immediately double backwards as he
starts to swing his club. Every time you hit him, he'll stop in his tracks
to swing a few times, then he'll take a few steps back. If you keep your
feet planted on the ground and go to him for every shot, you should be able
to defeat him without getting hit.
2) Part 2
Items - None
Enemies - Mamushi, Smasher, Slasher, Bombs
Boss - Trojan
Part two's layout is exactly the same as part one's, but the enemies are
more difficult. The description of each of the levels follows:
Levels 1,4 - Mamushi will come at you one at a time, swinging and throwing
their axes. At first, one will be right where you need to get to, so crouch,
block, and wait for him to throw an axe over your head. When there's one on
the screen, he can't throw another, so attack him when he's near. It's best
if you only try to get one hit in at a time and wait for the right moment.
He can still swing his axe with one flying on the screen. When you defeat
him, most of the time, another will come from the opposite side of the
screen, giving you ample time to get to the elevator. If, in the rare
circumstance, one is in front of you, defeat him as well. Don't proceed
until there is one behind you.
Levels 2,5 - Slashers will attack you in groups of two just like levels 2
and 5 of part 1, beginning at opposite sides of the screen. Just do what
you have to do to get to the elevator.
Levels 3,6 - Bombs will fall from the holes in the wall and smashers come
at you as well. It's best to just keep moving. Don't waste any time killing
anything unless it's ahead of you. The bombs are just too hard to avoid.
Stay in the air if you can.
Boss - Trojan
Trojan is the most difficult enemy in the game, but with a bit of practice,
he can be beaten without taking any damage. Start out by crouching. When
he comes in range of your sword, swing at him. Chances are he'll block this,
but whether he does or he doesn't, his next move is to jump at you and
attack. Relax, and just before he hits the ground, swing at him. If you did
it right, it should connect with him without you taking a hit. Immediately
block, as he might swing again after he lands. Then he'll back away a bit
and you just need to wait for him to move in again. Repeat this process,
crouching the entire time, until he dies. Remember, first attack to trigger
his jump, then attack again while he's in the air, just before he hits the
ground.
E) Stage 4 - Hiding Place 2
1) Part 1
Items - 2 Keys, Power Up, Speed Up, 3 Rats, 2 Life Restores, 2 High Jumps
Extra Life (with luck)
Enemies - Smasher, Slasher, Hidden Archer, Mamushi (In bonus area)
Boss - Iron Arm
Walk to the right and you'll run into the typical mish-mash of smashers and
slashers. They come at about a 3-1 ratio, the more difficult slashers
appearing less often. You will walk under an overpass with what looks like
a door in the ceiling. You should also see a manhole and a new addition to
the game's dynamics, the key. You need that key, which is just over the
manhole, to open that door in the ceiling, so after you dispose of the pesky
hidden archer from the manhole, jump over it and grab the item. But don't
head that way just yet. Drop down into the manhole for some power-ups.
Get yourself mentally prepared for a fight with Mamushi, who will drop down
from the right side of the screen and start swinging like a crazy man.
Crouch, block, and wait for it like you have before. Don't worry about your
time. You have plenty and there's only one Mamushi this time to deal with.
On the wall, you'll see the necessary high jump boot and you have some
exploring to do. Before you pick up the boot, around the middle of the
screen at a normal jump's distance lies the Speed Power Up "S." Get that
first and your character will walk faster until you die or until the end
of Hiding Place 2. Next, grab the boot and position yourself so you can hit
just above the very left side of the giant hole in the wall. This secret
holds the second and final power up "P," and hopefully you held on to the
last one for this long. If these two are combined, enemies that would
normally take eight hits only take three! If you combine both power ups,
you should be able to just breeze through the remainder of the game, but
it's an easy game anyway, so don't worry if you didn't. As for the other
items in this sewer, just above the right side AND above the left side of
the extrusion in the wall are health restoring hearts. You only need one,
and it just seems to be a flaw in design. Just grab either one (or both if
you feel like it) and then exit. There's nothing else here.
When you exit, head left to that door in the ceiling. When you stand under
it, it will automatically open for you and you can jump up. As soon as you
do, it will close under your feet and you will now be on the top level, so
proceed right. As usual, smashers and slashers will come at you, so just keep
moving. Soon, you will reach the edge of the beam on which you are standing.
Just drop down and you'll come to another manhole. Get rid of the hidden
archer and drop down in.
Upon entering, you will see an invaluable key, the ubiquitous high jump boot,
and three potato pod looking things on different sides of the screen, one
of which being at the bottom level. When you hit one, the other two dissapear,
so only worry about the bottom one - they all work the same way. When you
swing at the pod, you will either be attacked by three bats, a rat will
drop (giving you no points), or you will receive an extra life 1up.
Hopefully you will get the 1up, but it's pretty random, based on your score
and your points, so good luck. With the rest of the extra lives in the game,
you should be fine without it, but it couldn't hurt. Just cross your fingers.
Anyway, onto the rest of the items in this room. Grab the boot and the key
hanging on the wall and just below the left extrusion are three rats worth
1000 points each, so get them and exit the secret room.
Walk a little to the right to the door in the ceiling you see and it will
open for you. Jump up to face the boss, Iron Arm.
Boss - Iron Arm
As before (only this time, hopefully with power-ups) crouch and block and he
will eventually throw his arm over your head, giving you a second to attack.
Hit him and jump his arm when it returns to his body. Repeat this until he
is defeated.
2) Part 2
Items - 2 Keys
Enemies - Smasher, Slasher, Bombs, Green Armadillon
Boss - Goblin
You begin on the second level of the beams with a key to your right and a
hole in the floor to your left. Not too much of a puzzle here, grab the key,
kill the smashers, and drop down when the ground opens for you.
When you drop, the holes in the ground will start dropping bombs, compounded
with attacks from smashers and slashers. Time everything properly and head
right until the enemies dissapear and you are left with a door above your
head and a Green Armadillon attacking you from the right. He holds the key,
so you must defeat him. Jump into his attacks and when he unfolds and comes
at you, hit him to make him roll up again. Remember that he will never roll
more than four times, so if he makes it to the fourth, you can be certain
he will come out of his shell at the end.
When he is defeated, he will leave you the key with which you may use to
open the door above. Jump up and head right. Nothing left now except the
boss, Goblin.
When you go right, you will drop down off the edge of the beam and just
before you run into Goblin, you'll see holes in the walls, which indicate
bombs. Dodge the bombs and get Goblin on the screen.
Boss - Goblin
The previous tactic of letting Goblin fall right onto your shield is a bit
more difficult now that bombs are at your feet, but it can work just the
same. When you trigger Goblin onto the screen, jump back to the left and
hold your guard to prevent his projectiles. When a bomb is about to explode
near you, just release your guard and jump. Then, when you land, immediately
draw your guard again, and when he jumps at you from the other side of the
screen, hold your guard straight up to kill him. It doesn't take long.
F) Stage 5 - Hiding Place 3
Items - Life Restore, Shiruken, Extra Life, 4000 Points
Enemies - Mamushi, Bombs
Bosses - Muscler, Iron Arm
Unlike the rest of the game, Hiding Place 3 has only 1 part with both
bosses at the end. This can be difficult to conquer, but it also saves a
bit of time not having to travel through two easy parts of one stage.
Hiding Place 3 is also the second and last vertical scrolling level,
but instead of elevators this time, there are tubes which you drop down
into. Each time you drop, you will need to travel to the opposite side of
the screen to get to the next tube which takes you further down.
Level 1 - You begin just under 3 item pods like in the first secret room
of Hiding Place 2, but be careful - only one of these pods contains a
helpful item. Like the secret room in the last stage, it's random, but
the pods will award 2000 points, release 3 bats, or drop bombs for a few
seconds. It's up to you whether or not 2000 points is worth it. Just be
prepared when you open the pods.
Levels 2,3 - Well, they started you with the tough guy Mamushi, whom you
must defeat through the next two levels. Just be patient, crouch, and when
that axe flies over your head, attack. When you have one behind you, keep
moving and either crouch his thrown axe or jump it depending on if it's
high or low. Drop down to the next level as soon as you can.
Level 4 - Nothing here but a couple of bombs. Time it right and get to the
other side.
Level 5 - Bonus Time! Three more pods are on the ceiling, but you don't have
to worry about these. They, at random, contain 2000 points, an extra life
(1up), and a life restoring heart. Not too difficult at all. Now, before you
drop down, you can see two more pods in the level below right next to each
other. Get ready, because as soon as you drop, you'll want to destroy that
first one.
Level 6 - The pod on the right drops bombs until you slash it, so as soon
as you drop, jump facing to the left and whack it away. Notice that the left
pod is moving away from you at a slow rate, and although you stopped the
bombs from hurting you, you'll want to catch that pod before it floats off
the left side of the screen, so chase after it and kill it to reveal the
token Nintendo Shiruken, worth 10,000 points. This is the last level of
the stage and you're onto the bosses as soon as you drop.
Bosses - Muscler, Iron Arm
Like before, keep your feet on the ground and walk towards Muscler. Hit
him as soon as he is in range, then back away when he starts to swing.
When he's done, he'll back off a bit and you need to walk after him again.
When you defeat him, crouch immediately, because Iron Arm will magically
appear, where you need to use the same patient tactic of crouch and block
until he throws his arm over your head. At the right moment, hit him and
jump his returning arm. Then crouch and repeat. And that's the whole
stage - finished.
G) Stage 6 - The Final Battle
1) Part 1
Items - None
Enemies - Slasher, Smasher, Goblin
Boss - Trojan
Just like many previous stages, you are going to want to move fast from left
to right, hoping you get two smashers behind you. If this happens, it's clear
sailing, but if not, just whack away. Unfortunately, Goblin is up high
shooting at you the whole time, so time everything right. It's a very short
stage, and you'll get to the boss in no time.
Boss - Trojan
Just like last time, use the same technique of crouching and blocking.
When he is near, swing and hopefully he won't block. Either way, he'll jump
at you and you need to attack just before he hits the ground. Then block and
he'll back away. Repeat this until he falls.
2) Part 2
Items - High Jump
Enemies - Skyrogyro, Slasher, Smasher
Boss - King Shriek
You begin between two pillars and skyrogyro attacking from above. You also
need to deal with slashers and smashers below, so watch out. Walk to the
right, passing the first pillar you come to and at the next one, swing for
a high jump boot. Use it to kill the skyrogyro above if convenient, but
don't get yourself killed. Head right, attacking when necessary, until the
enemies clear away. When the screen locks up so you can't scroll it any
further, you have reached the unique boss, King Shriek.
Boss - King Shriek
As soon as the screen locks, run to the far left side of the screen. There
are two stone outlines of King Shriek in the background, and he is about to
come out of the right one to attack you. The flying bricks will hurt you if
you are standing anywhere outside of the left pillar, so back yourself all
the way to the far left. When he comes out, you will see him swinging his
giant mace over his head. The trick here is to jump into him, attack on the
decline, and then stand and block when you land. When you land, he will start
swinging at you, but if you're blocking, he will hit your shield a few times,
merely knocking you out of range, allowing you to attack again. (Note:
crouching and blocking is hit or miss, so make sure you stand upright when
you block.) When you have defeated him, get to the right, because as you
guessed, another one is coming at you from the left side. After he breaks
out of the wall, use the same technique you used on the first. When he is
defeated, you will be transported to the final battle with Achilles.
G) Stage 7 - The Battle With Achilles
You start in the center of the screen with the giant, Achilles to the right.
His large sword raised above him, he will slowly walk himself towards you.
You need to use the same method you used with King Shriek to defeat Achilles,
only after you jump in, crouch and block instead of standing, as Achilles
attacks at an angle towards your feet. So, get up on him before he gets to
you and when you're just out of range, jump in and attack on your decend.
When you land, immediately crouch and block, and like King Shriek, (only
this time, you're crouching) he'll knock you away after a couple of hits,
allowing you to use this tactic again. You should be able to beat him without
getting hit, but be careful - each hit from his sword takes off 4 life bars
(half your energy!)
And that's that.
I) Ending
Upon defeating Achilles, your map character will crush the burning skull,
and you will be presented with the following broken English message:
THANKS TO YOU
WE HAVE FINALLY DEFEATED
"ACHILLES"
THE WORLD WILL BE
IN PEACE AGAIN
WE PRAISE
YOUR LOVE AND COURAGE
THAT HAS CARRIED US THROUGH
OUR DESPERATE STRUGGLE!
Then each of the bosses present themselves with some stunning 8-bit graphics,
one at a time in this order:
Mamushi
Iron Arm
Armadillon
Goblin
Muscler
Trojan
King Shriek
Achilles
THE END

X. Continue Code
When you have used up all of your lives, you may continue to part 1 of any
stage by pressing Up+Start simultaneously when you return to the title screen.

XI. Arcade Comparison
Of course, the graphics are much better in the arcade version of Trojan than
on the NES, but the arcade's also a real no-brainer with no power-ups or
keys. Trojan on the NES doesn't have the most complex puzzles on the planet,
but the arcade, rather than a boot symbolizing high jump, has a glowing
neon "JUMP" on the floor. The boss, King Shriek, also only appears in the
NES version. No keys, free lives, or strategy - and it's a lot harder. I
prefer the NES version, as I played it before the arcade, but if you run
into a classic game system somewhere, you should definitely try the arcade
version. Unlike other games like Strider, the translation is pretty close.

XII. Expert Time Attack Walkthrough
As I write this walkthrough, my fastest time beating Trojan is just under
nine minutes. This is not the easiest thing to do, especially since you can't
die to pull it off with any kind of speed. Furthermore, the bosses can be
difficult if you're just racing through them and the damage to your character
carries over to the second part of every stage. But if you think you're up
to the challenge, this section should help you on the way.
Rules:
1) No dying - It takes up way too much time.
2) Only one power up "P" - The second one takes too long to get to, and the
one less hit the remaining six bosses won't make up for it. But you need one
to cut the enemies' energy in half.
3) No hearts - Again, they take too much time.
Walkthrough:
Again, dying takes up too much time, so if you kick it, just reset. You lose
your "P" and you've wasted too much time. Below is a description of each level:
Stage 1-1: Skip the manhole and work your way to the Mamushi. Don't do anything
stupid on them, as there is a good chance you'll get hit on the next stage.
Either jump or duck one flying axe, and while it's on the screen, wail away.
Stage 1-2: Drop down in the manhole and move your way around the rolling
Armadillon. Hopefully, he will keep rolling when you're collecting stuff, but
if he comes out, just hit him. Grab the boot, jump up and hit the "P", grab
it, and exit. Then work your way to Iron Arm. When fighting him, take the hits
if you can afford it and just beat him up.
Stage 2-1: Walk right and don't stop unless you have to hit something in your
path. Only swing once and keep moving. The arrows will miss you altogether.
Armadillon is a pain, but you just have to hope he comes out of his shell
quickly.
Stage 2-2: Block everything, but keep moving. Wipe out the barbarian quickly
and skip the 1up (you only need one life). When you almost have Goblin on
the screen, jump at the right time and catch him in the air. He will be jumping
towards you and will jump back before he jumps across the screen. In your
first jump, you can hit him twice before he hits the ground. Then jump at him
again, hitting him two more times before he lands, killing him.
Stage 3-1: Stage 3 is where you need to be careful. The slashers are the most
difficult thing to get around, so just keep moving. Jump and duck when you have
to, but just be careful. When you get to Muscler, hit him twice using the
hit and retreat method, then jump in for the third hit and hit him a fourth
time when you hit the ground.
Stage 3-2: Mamushi are easy when there is an axe flying on the screen, but the
slashers are a pain as usual and the smashers combined with bombs can be tough.
Just preserve your energy as much as you can, and when you get to Trojan, duck
and swing constantly. If you have more than half your energy starting out,
you'll succeed.
Stage 4-1: Grab the key and skip the manhole. Jump up, go right, then drop down
into the next manhole. Grab the boot and key, and exit. Jump up and waste Iron
Arm. He's not so tough.
Stage 4-2: Grab the key, drop down, then avoid everything and keep moving. Kill
anything in your path until you get to Armadillon. Then, again, it's up to
him when he's going to die. Just keep your cool and get the key. Head onward
to Goblin and use the same technique as at the end of stage 2-2. Jump in and
hit him twice, then jump at him again when he's on his way backward and hit
him twice again.
Stage 5: Skip the first three pods. Kill the Mamushi with style in the
next two levels and jump like a freak in the following one to avoid the
bombs. Then you'll get to the bonus pods and you don't have time to shop
for the heart, so hopefully, you're full. Then use the same technique to
defeat Muscler as at the end of 3-1: Hit and retreat twice, jump in and
attack once, then hit once more once you've landed. Then just wail away
on Iron Arm until he's toast.
Stage 6-1: Walk just as you did in stage 2-1. Goblin's projectiles will miss
you if you only swing once at anything in your path. Then when you get to
Trojan, crouch and swing. Be accurate, though, and take a bit of time here,
as there is plenty on the next stage to take you out.
Stage 6-2: There is a method I use that takes a bit of practice to avoid the
skyrogyro on this stage. They drop their bombs one at a time as they come
toward you, so the one furthest away from you is the closest to the ground. I
jump when my body will hit that one. Then, in the air, I draw my shield. The
bomb hits my shield, I'm way ahead of the rest of them, and I don't stop.
Unfortunately, this only works when there's nothing in your path, so do it
when you get two ground troops behind you. You can breeze through this level
this way, and if you take a hit or two, don't worry - the King Shrieks are
simple and won't hit you. As soon as one comes out of the wall, jump in
and attack just as you did on Muscler. Hit once in the air and once when you
land. Then wait for the other one and do the same thing.
Stage 7: Well, you can't risk getting killed here when you're so close, so
just jump in and attack, crouch, block, get knocked away, wait the
second for him to walk, and jump in again. He only takes four hits and
a few seconds.
Good Luck!
