1. Introduction
=====================
Track & Field II was released in late 1988. It was
a Konami game and it appeared on the NES, as did it's
predecessor the year before. This game was a vast
improvement over the original and it featured more
modes and more events. One of the modes was an
Olympic mode that had a very real life feel to it, because
you had to in fact advance through five days of play.
The first four days featured three events per day and
you had to qualify through all three events before you
could move on to the next day's event. However, this game
did feature a password system. Once you completed a
day, you received a password and this made it easier to
pick up where you left off. This is possibly the best of the
many sports variety games that ever appeared on the NES.

2. Version History
======================
Version 1.0 - This is the first version of the document. Any updates that may
be needed will be made. For now it's just a simple document. Mainly I will
focus on describing the modes and then each event. Each event will have
both a description of the event and a list of controls needed to perform the
event. (November 30, 2000)
Version 1.1 - Fixed the formatting a little, typos, and other minor things.
=====================
3. Modes
=====================
This game features three modes of play - Training, Olympic, Versus.
Training mode is a mode for one or two players. Whichever amount of
players you select you will be given the opportunity to practice the 12
events that appear in the Olympic mode.
Olympic Mode is a 5 day event. There are 12 events in this mode. You will
play the first three events on the first day. If you qualify through all of
them, you will then move on to the second day. This process repeats and
at the end of day four you will have made your way through all 12 events.
The fifth and final day combines these events into one day.
Versus Mode only features three events and it is for two human players. Two
of the events, taekwondo and fencing, appear in the Olympic mode. However,
the versus mode is the only mode in the game in which you can find the arm
wrestling event.

4. Events
=====================
=====================
A. Fencing
=====================
Control -
A - Stab
B - Guard
The goal of fencing is to stab your opponent five times, before
he stabs you five times. That's fairly simple.....
=====================
B. Triple Jump
=====================
Control -
A - Build up speed
B - Jump
In the triple jump you must build up speed with button A. Once you get just before
the line you must hit button B to jump. You will land, but you have to hit B again before
you land. However, if you hit it too soon or too late, this will result in a foul. The longer
you hold button B, the higher the angle of your jump will be. It's not a good idea to
have a high angle. Somewhere in the 30's is usually the best angle. This will be the
second jump, but when you land you have to hit B one final time. Once again not too
soon or too late and the angle will be however long you hit B. That will be the final jump
and wherever you land will be the distance. You must have 15 meters to qualify. You have
three tries.
=======================
C. Freestyle Swimming
=======================
Control -
A - Swim
B - Breathe
In this event you move down a pool and then back up. You
have to repeatedly hit the A button to swim. You also have
to watch your meter on how much air your swimmer has.
You can hit B button which will allow to breathe. If you want
to a butterfly stroke, hit Down on the Directional Buttons
when the race begins. The goal is to beat your opponent
back to the starting point at the bottom of the pool.
=========================
D. High Dive
=========================
Control -
A - From the board select a stance
B - Select a type of dive
Up - Hold
Left + B - Tuck
Right + B = Jack Knife
Up or Down + B = Straight Dive
The purpose of the high dive is to impress the judges. You will start out on the board. You
press button A to choose a dive stance. The choices are - handstand, reverse, forward or
backward dive. Then in the air you perform one of the moves listed above by pressing B
and whichever button on the control pad for the type of dive. You also have to be sure
to hit the water at the correct angle, which is 90 degrees, and with your body straight. To
qualify you have to have a high average after the four judges rate your performance.
=========================
E. Clay Pigeon Shooting
=========================
Control -
A - Shoot
B - Throw the clay pigeon
Control Pad - Aim the sights to shoot the clay pigeons.
To qualify you must shoot a total of 25 of the 40 clay pigeons that are released.
Later on it will be a higher number.
==========================
F. Hammer Throw
==========================
Control -
Control Pad - Move counter clockwise to spin. Up, Left, Down, Right
A - Throws the hammer and sets the angle of the throw.
Spin around a couple of times for speed using the control pad. Then release
when the indicator flashes with the A button. Determine the angle. You must
have a certain distance to qualify. The distance you must attain is usually
shown on the screen somewhere, which is 40 meters.
==========================
G. Taekwondo
==========================
Control -
A - Kick
B - Punch
Up - Jump
Down - Crouch down
Left and right - Move left and right...
Up + B - High kick
Up + A - Jumping punch
Down + B - Crouch and kick
Basically, you and your opponent have a stamina meter. You have to knock your
opponent down before he knocks you down. There are some minor combination
moves you can make in this game. No massive combinations or special moves
however. Mostly just jumping and punching or something like that. This is one of the
easiest events. Anyone with any experience in a fighting game should be able
to beat this one.
========================
H. Pole Vault
========================
Control -
Up/Down - Set the height of the pole
A - Build up speed
B - Release the pole
Press A repeatedly to build up speed and then press and hold B when you are
ready to jump. Continue holding B as you make your way over the bar and then
release to land. Don't knock the bar off, or you'll get a foul. Be sure to wait until
you have cleared the bar to release the button B.
=========================
I. Canoeing
=========================
Control -
Directional Buttons - Avoid obstacles
A - Paddle forward
B - Paddle backward
A long white water course that you must kayak up and down. There are gates
that you must pass through and obstacles to avoid. The course is timed.
====================
J. Archery
====================
Control -
Left or Right - Aim the bow
Up or Down - Raise or lower the bow
A - Build up the power of the bow
B - Shoot the arrow
The wind is a factor in this event. Aim based on the wind. The target is first
set at a distance of 30 meters. Then it moves to 50, 70, and 90 meters. Each
distance is given three tries to qualify.
======================
K. Hurdles
======================
Control -
A - Run
B - Jump
This is one of the easiest events to explain. To win this event you must out run
and out jump your opponents. You have to repeatedly hit the A button for speed.
To jump press B, but hold it because you have to jump over the water hazards and
the hurdles too.
======================
L. Horizontal Bar
======================
Control -
A - Power
B - Moves
This event also requires you to impress the judges. You basically swing around on
the bar and perform moves. The game will tell you to finish and when it does you have
to dismount. The judges will then judge you on how good or bad you did at the moves
you performed and your dismount.
========================
M. Arm Wrestling
========================
Control -
A - Build up power.
This event is only found in the versus mode. This is the most that is for two
human players. It's not part of the Olympic mode. Just keep pressing A while your
opponent does the same with the other controller. Whoever gets the other person
down twice wins the match.
