much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and
I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I
could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if

1. INTRODUCTION
Toobin is the only innertube game I know of. You're a guy on a tube going
down a river. You can hit the shore but must avoid stuff that can puncture
your tube. That includes organic debris, but you can pick up garbage to fling
at it--or people who shoot you. You get big points floating through gates(the
narrower, the more points,) there's some maze element(but no dead ends) and
the level themes are interesting. You have warp zones too and the controls
are acceleration-based. It's a fun game if never staggeringly clever in the
tactical department. The river motifs, on the other hand, are downright
amusing. For an original game, Toobin's a surprisingly safe choice for easy
enjoyment.
And now wikipedia, which has good general information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toobin'
2. CONTROLS
Down accelerates you. Water resists you so you have to hold in a direction
or you stop moving except for slightly with the flow as the screen scrolls
down. You can accelerate back up if you want. The top of screen forces you
down at a slow rate.
A=fire can DL
B=fire can DR
Cans can't hurt gators, stun firers, and wipe out trees(which regenerate some
boards.) You can pick up a can that hit a river tree.
Select toggles your score/display of bonus, patches and # of cans. You cannot
have more than 10 cans--you'll see a ?.
3. WALKTHROUGH
I don't know where the hidden letters Wikipedia talked about is, but I do
know how to get through, and I did find the warp zones. This walkthrough is
of limited use, as most obstacles you see in one-player mode won't be a
surprise the second time through. But hey, it was for the NES Completion
Project!
COLORADO
Get the can nearby. You can back up carefully to get the greeny in the upper
right, then go back DL. Best to make a diagonal movement. You can go through
the 1000 uprights with little trouble.
Detour alert--left of the waterfall and fire DL at the two branches allows UL
to the warp zone pool.
* WARP ZONE I *
2nd-left to Nevada(4)
2nd-right to Brontosaurus(3)
bottom to Yukon(2)
Avoid the center through 2nd-left, but use it in 2nd-right, which is quicker.
The other passages go to the bottom.
(End detour)
Go down the waterfall but stay left--since speed is no object, you should
probably take it halfway down, go left, get the six-pack and then go back UR
to get the rest of the fun stuff. There are fishermen further down the river.
Wait if one pulls his rod back, but otherwise you have little to watch for.
If you want you can plunk a guy with a can to freeze him, but it's not
critical.
At the end there is an arrow full of cans you might as well get.
OKEFENOKEE
Straight down through the 1000, then UR to get the cans and D DL for cans and
another 1000. You can cross over the weeds with no trouble, so weave back and
forthe for treasures. Go through the 1000 and be prepared to take a bit of a
hit from a waterfall--plunk the hunter with a can to make sure he can't fire
at you. The 2000 should be easy to get through. Get more goodies going DL and
then go either way around the small island.
Be sure to go through the center of the 1000 or you may hit a tree. Go DR for
treasure and also so you can see the enemy firing at you. Go through the 1000
and now an alligator will show up soon. Let it get near you, then go to the
side and chuck a few cans at it. For the next 1000 near the trees, go slowly
down through it then back U and DL. You may want to peg the hunter on the
island with a few cans before continuing through the 1000 right of him.
Approach the next 1000 from below if you want. There'll be a few more hunters
you might as well shoot. When a big island splits the course, go right for
the 2000, then L U for 1000. Beware the green monster during this idyllic
last bit as he can really chase you. You can back up and shoot him, but he's
not really worth the effort.
RIO GRANDE
This river has cacti in it. Guys with sombreros fire in the same diagonals
you do. There are also stampeders but fortunately the shooters are far enough
away at the start that you can just duck them. It may be tough to judge where
the enemies' shots will wind up, but they WON'T wind up directly to the
right. So line up with your enemies and don't get in a shooting match, though
starting one is okay. Remember to shoot a bit high when you go in for things.
The river narrows a bit before a 2000 but that is no big deal--the buffaloes
give plenty of warning. Then you have a choice of 4 paths. Take the 2nd
right, go through the 1000 and back UL. Another choice and go to the left for
a 1000 and safety from a guy on the right. There's a long stretch that is
depressingly idyllic.
JURASSIC
Go DR. You can get the first six-pack as the dinosaur tail goes off the
screen. That way you don't run into the bushes aboe. Then go DL and see which
way the gator goes to avoid it. You can lead it one way and switch back
quickly. Fire DL at the prehistoric guy so he doesn't chuck axes. Then go
through the 1000 and get another can. Take the DL branch and go through the
2000, then get the can and the bag.
Go straight right to get the can under the dinosaur's tail. You can fire DL
and DR to take out cavemen. There'll be more pairs of them and you can
probably sneak past them as they don't guard much. Their slow shots are
really annoying. Beyond them, DL into the whirlpool to class 2.
YUKON
Here enemies fire R, then DR--or L then DL depending on how they are facing.
DL DR to avoid the lethal ice floes. Go down the waterfall but be prepared to
slow up to avoid fish. You need to backpedal carefully to get cans. There's a
200, 500 and then a 2000 where you need to keep bumping DL. Go DL to avoid
the main shooters and then cycle back UR for the blue stuff. Beyond there is
an exit right of the left sandbar.
NILE
Tanks fire UL L DL, and sphinx fire quickly to the right. Shoot the tank--you
get a 6 pack early on. But run past the sphinx bullets using a little
momentum. Barely touch the right of the branch covering the 2000s to go down.
Another tank after that. Get in position and shoot DR when it shoots L. Get
the packets and shoot the sphinx if you want. A big waterfall ahead--you can
head down the center and go slowly once you see the tornado. That will allow
you to hold up and pick off some treasures. Get what you can of the others--
no more enemies, so no rush. It doesn't seem to matter which exit you go
through.
CUPRUM
Head down quickly through the gates then slow up and get the 6-pack. Move DL
and fire DL before getting to the gates to stop the mobile shooter(he fires
3x) and now you can try to get the beach ball. Go slowly through the gate,
slightly down as left after, then left and turn back up quickly. You can
outrun the gunner or, at worst, fire DR. There are two gates beyond that. Go
down through one and up through the other--slowly, you have time.
Run past the next shooter and take the DL branch to go through the gates--you
can line up well in advance so it is a straight shot. Get the cans and then
hit the middle bar and go down, pushing DR to avoid the barbed wire. You may
need to swerve right quickly to avoid a spike, then go down the narrow DR at
full speed to avoid gunners.
It's probably more important to get the cans than the bags, so stay right.
You can go back up through the left gates. In fact I recommend it as a mobile
spike follows you, and you can shake it off to go through the 2000's.
Go very softly through the 1000 gates if you want to get the 6-pack in the
UL. You need to move U D R and if you hit the edge several times, forget it.
You won't have the room to hit the mobile spike.
I found no way to get the 1000 below--I tried to fake right, go left, shoot
the 2 mobile spikes and come back but had no time to fake the third and come
back. You do need to kill at least the third, but all three if you don't go
fast enough. Stay left of center and go slowly down, then accelerate a bit
when just over the 5000's. Bust into the bottom wall and tear left afterwards
to avoid the final mobile spike.
MISSISSIPI
Steer through the first two gates, then be prepared to go L/R through the
5000. Slow up on passing the mosquito(stay to the left to avoid him) for the
next 5000--you can go to the edge here and shoot camoflagued hunters. In
general if you stay in the middle you will get caught in a gulfstream, but
staying right of center is the quick way(fewer points) to get through.
Go to the DR and U and loop over the whirly things to get all three, then hit
the whirlpool.
NIGHTMARE
Wait for the skulls to crosss and get the cans. The left-right patrolling
bird is little problem. The gunning pyramids fire at a 30 degree angle and
not 45 so they are nasty. Soon you'll get to a branch--waterfall to right,
plain sailing to left. Take the plain sailing but wait for a bird to go past
when you see the next clearing. Once the birds disappear, head down slowly
again. The whirlpool is after. On to class 3.
BRONTOSAURI
Go up through the gate and then get two cans--three if you feel confident in
your inching ability. Shoot the axe thrower ad get 1000. Sharp DL DR around
the gator below. The next guy throws axes UR and DR. Stay in the center and
go left around the sandbar.
Next guy fires UL L DL so be wary--pull DL quickly, then go DR avoiding the
dinosaur and back DL to cut across the two axemen. Another gate and
brontosaurus and go left of the sandbar and cut DR after the upper guy throws
DL. Go down the right and you can pull left and away from the enemy to the
right and back up for 2000 more. Go left of the sandbar past the brontosaurus
on the left.
RIO DEL ORO
Cactus to avoid here. Down through the 2000, then UR for 1000-pointers. A man
in a sombrero shoots 4 times--UR DR UR DR, pause. Cut diagonally across. Get
the 1000 gate and other goodies, go slowly down the left dge, get the packet
and now you can risk U-UR and getting the UR packet. Circle back for the 6-
pack.
Run quickly through the gate after he fires, then pull up and bounce against
the left. Go down when only your arm touches the cactus. Another bull runs
across the water below. Let him pass, enter the 2000, then UL for a packet.
At the sandbars, go down the left of 4 passages and then through the gates--a
lot of easy cleanup here. Hit the sides to go down once the water bull is
past(left) or off the edge(right) and get the packets, though it's not
necessary.
BLACK FOREST
Cool new theme here. Watch for the crow going back and forth. It turns
diagonally once you pass it, so stay just behind it. A magician is after a
few gates--UR, R R DR, pause. Then a magician and row combine and you may be
better ducking to the left around the sandbar and coming back. Accelerate
past the big bird.
Next up is a magician you really need to hit since he and two birds in a
narrow area can be lethal.
Now you can shoot the wizard on the dock and just exit through the 2000. You
can risk it to the DR where there are 2 gates but only if you hit the wizard.
You may fall into the exit by accident so line up, go slow into the gate and
go hard DR.
CANALS OF MARS
Shoot all moving spikes but not martians.
Martian nearby fires DR UR and you can get the two cans quickly and go L-UL.
Bounce D-DL through the gate and around the wire. Down the left, get the
beach ball and go right. (Or, if you need more cans, shoot the mobile zapper
and go DR/UR.) Go through the 2000 and shoot the spike in the water. Circle
around the next one and grab the goodies, then go down the gate but tend
right to avoid the spike, then left to avoid the shooter. Take the right
path. Now go down and going left gets a beach ball, and going right you need
to shoot the spike blocking the gate. I recommend going down the right edge,
waiting for the moving zapper from the right to come up at the branch, going
down and firing DL and going up through the gate.
As the canal narrows go to the right edge to fire DL at the movable spike.
Pick up litter as you see it. Hit the 1000 gate and go UR if you can--if not,
duck around to hit the 1000 gate in the right. Anoter moving spike awaits,
then a moving 5000, then more garbage to pick up. The exit is soon after.
STYX
Here devils fire 3x diagonally and are only hittable when visible.
Go DR for the can then UL DL--timing runs so the Sphinx doesn't hit you. DL
for the 1000 gate and if you can, UL for the garbage. G0o right around the
tree to get through the gates. Hit the sphinx with a can. Get a can and move
R-DR-R to get past the gator. Go to the right edge to avoid 1 branch, then
back left a little.
Avoid the snakes and get the litter, then push to the right to enter the gate
and time a run past the 1 sphinx and the 2--who fortunately fire together.
Now you need to shoot a branch quickly and run through it. I fired DR at the
leftmost as you can go D-DR to get through. Gate, snake, trash. A devil fires
at the next gate. Get it and go UL for trash.
Go down the center waterfall, listing right when by the tree. Hold up and
wait for the sphinx then the snake. I went down the left path then turned
right here. You hit the gates that way. There is a gate in the center and a
devil and sphinx to run past. On to class 4.
NEVADA
Move U then R D DL for a shot at the 25000. The tornado works from afar. Best
to try the gate from below. The next bit is easy til a hunter guards a 1000.
You have a warp zone ahead. It is tougher to get to than Warp Zone 1 as more
branches block the way. You need to steer left of the waterfall and take out
3, then go sharply UL.
* WARP ZONE II *
2nd-left goes to snake (4)
2nd-right to Brontosaurus(6)
bottom to Yukon(5)
See zone 1 for (minimal) obstacles.
(End detour)
Get garbage, go through 2000. 6 pack below, go down center at branch and UL.
Go left at the next branch for a 1000 gate. The hunters are easy to avoid.
2000 past them, then shoot the tree for the 1000 gate. Pool beyond that.
AMAZON
Native shoots quickly UL at you, so go DL to the gate. Along the edge then
DR. Hug left to avoid gator while picking up garbage. Another gate with more
garbage. Left at the sandbar, go through 2000 and UR for the beach ball. Left
at the next sandbar then through the 2000. Fake left at the next sandbar to
fool the gator then R DR along the edge DL too. DR and go up through the gate
to the pool.
ARGENTUM
Down hard right up for a 6-pack. D L U(the goop should have passed by now)
for another. As before kill all moving spikes. L at the branch for the 1000
gate. Beach ball, R and hook DR. Watch the bottle thrower carefully and
accelerate through the gate. Fire DL to get to the left branch and 1000 gate.
Pick up the 2 cans(L then R) and go through the 2000. Tear down the narrow
center bit and be prepared to go LU for a 6 pack. Head sharply down.
Loop up a bit and R D for a 1000 gate. You can accelerate down through the
5000 or fake the storm cloud and tap up. Or you can just hit the pool. Stay
UR and go D R L, then UL and D L R to fake out the cloud.
AMERICAN
Weird firing angles here, 30 degrees to horizontal. Stay R/L of any enemy
with arrows. Run down quickly through the first gate. Left of the sandbar for
a 1k, then hit the next 1k--watch the fishers as they cast bait(lethal) out
pretty far. There will be a gate right of a sandbar. Tap down through it, UL
DL. Next guy shoots straight right. When river narrows, stay just above an
enemy, then bolt when he fires. After it widens(1000 gate) a quick diagonal
DL cut and then going down to another gate splits the level open. There's
garbage beyond the pool.
BEACH PARTY
Just a fun level to cruise through. Touch the speakers if you want. You
cannot touch the women.
I consider this being 1 time through the game. You just continue to cycle
through level 4 if you keep playing.
But what happens if you go to level 5?
YUKON(5)
The beginning here is like the previous Yukon--DL, DR, avoid flying fish,
back into the cans after the waterfall. Avoid the ice floes. Pengiuns won't
run at you, and flying fish only have a few rows they go across. The natives
fire very quickly so look both ways and cross. Stay left when there are all
those sandbars and come back right when a guy is to the left. Cut DL to the
pool.
CUPRUM(5)
The same as the Cuprum above, except there is a clump of 3 enemies near the
end, with 1 playing safety. He is worth shooting so you have time to get
through the 5000's.
OKEFENOKEE(5)
See above, but marsh monsters can attack from the UR--see the lilypads at the
start. Move back and fire diagonally to get them. Also the hunters fire more
quickly. Fire DL and move quickly down when you hear shots on each side.
There'll be a bunch of hunters from the left and an alligator at the end. You
can probably cruise by the gator, but throw a can at him just in case.
There's another hunter guarding a 1000 and you may want to take him from the
UL as he fires UR. Or at the very least loop around the gate and take it from
below. Avoid the annoying mosquito past the lily pads. Ignore the can--it's
not worth it. You can't shoot the mosquito. Go to the left and pace the L UL
L DL shooting to get one gate and come back up through the other, just in
time for the other guy to be off the screen. Hit the 2000 and the debris and
the DL warp.
STYX(5)
The sphinxes are quick but they telegraph their shots. When you get by the
left one, swerve right to DL shoot the alligator. Shoot a branch if you need
to to get out of the next tangle. You can run quickly past the 2 sphinx in a
row below the 3rd, then fire DL and go DL to get by the left branch of 4
blocking your way. Be sure to be by it, then tiptoe around the next--or fire
DR. Catch the 1000 gate backwards.
There is a devil to avoid and then I advise staying left of the waterfalls.
There'll be 3 eventually side to side. Hit the 500 gate below the bottom one.
Go DR into it so you still have the bonus. Go through the 2000 gate in the DR
branch then back UL and down the side. That gives a free path down.
NILE(5)
Nothing distinguishes this from the previous Nile, qualtitatively, but
everything's a bit faster.
BRONTOSAURI(6)
Done before. Where you have the 2 2000s next to each other, you can loop back
over/under the sandbar. Accelerating past the axemen is no problem.
RIO GRANDE(6)
Lots more guys in sombreros than before. You can avoid them pretty easily by
cutting diagonally across their fire. Stay
BLACK FOREST (6) remember to keep halfway up so you can move past possible
diving crows quickly.
NIGHTMARE(6) again more intimidating than difficult.
CANALS OF MARS
Apostrophe shooting the final chainlink in the canals.
10000 for one letter.
Now on to level 7--Snake.
SNAKE
Cut diagonally back across the snakes when they pass under. There's a 1000
gate after a hunter then a waterfall down. Guess what's to the west? A warp
zone. It's tricky to get to but you need to shoot
++
++
+.
The UR will reappear. So you need to be quick and precise looping back. It's
no big deal if you miss it as it just kicks you to the start of level 8.
* WARP ZONE III *
A trivial warp zone. You get a dotty thing and then you are dumped in the
Yukon(8) level.
* END DETOUR *
Get the 2000 gate then go down the right center and back DL. Hook back up for
cans. 1000 gate left of the next big sidebar. 2000 below that zigzagging DR
DL. Shoot the tree to get to the next 1000. There's a can on the
beach(litter, can't get to it) then snakes to avoid. A DL sweep worked for
me.
AMAZON(7)
Down quickly and then you've probably done this twice before.
ARGENTUM(7)
Mooooom! Not again! Well, there is a submarine that makes a weird noise at
the 3 way narrow passage near the end. Then storm clouds after. Shoot the
wire for another letter.
OKEFENOKEE(7)
Move past the 1000 quickly as before to zap the swamp monster. The tree above
the 1000 by the lilypads has a "T".
RIO GRANDE(7)
There is a letter in the center of the 2nd 3x3 cactus group.
CANALS OF MARS(7)
NIGHTMARE(7)
YUKON(8)
B is on an ice floe to the right just after the 2000.
ARGENTUM(8)
Oe O is just as you go SE at the beginning. Metal wires. Shoot them down.
MISSISSIPPI(8)
STYX(8)
Apostrophe off to left
NILE(8)
There is a T just SE of the 2000 as the river cuts right.
RIO GRANDE(9)
YUKON(9)
counterclockwise loop then down
BRONTOSAURI(9)
Green O in tree behind brontosaurus that is to the right, right of a small
sandbar.
BLACK FOREST(9)
T in tree just after big eagle.
CANALS OF MARS(9)
AMERICAN(9)
Green o in middle of 3 trees
MOLDAU/SLIMY ZONE = not used
TOOBIN points: 10000 for 1, 30000 for 2, 60000 for 3, etc. = where the big
points are, 10000x added for letter x.
4. CHEATS
Set byte 0x4c to 9 to get infinite cans.
a1 is the multiplier. Tinker with it for huge points.
6e is the number of +'s(patches) you have.
