1. Intro
~~~~~~~
This is my first attempt to hopefully complete a good walkthrough of Toki,
a classical NES action game made by Taito. I put alot of work into this
walkthrough, so I hope it helps you. If it doesn't, I hope you at least
learn something from it, because I sure did.
2. Story
~~~~~~~
The story, as taken from the instruction booklet.
So there I was, walking in the jungle with my girl, Miho. Man, she was
beautiful. (By the way, I am - or was - Toki the Warrior.) Suddenly, I saw my
worst enemy, Vookimedlo the Sorcerer, step out from behind a tree. With him
was second worst enemy, Bashtar, the invisible giant. I should say "nearly
invisible giant," 'cause you can see his boots, gloves, and heart. Well, they
attacked us. As Bashtar carried Miho off, Vookimedlo turned me into a little
helpless monkey. I was in despair, until the Spirit of the Jungle stepped in.
The Spirit was really mad about the sneak attack, and so he gave me the
ability to shoot fireballs from my mouth. (It feels like gargling.) Now, to
win back Miho and my human form, I must go to the Golden Palace to beat
Vookimedlo and Bashtar in a fair fight. But I'll do it, no matter what it
takes. Come on along, it's going to be a wild ride!

4. Status
~~~~~~~~~
Counter-clockwise
At the top left of the status bar there is a P:<#> this is the remaining lives
Below that is your health meter. When you run out of hearts, you will lose a
life.
Next is a coin this shows how many coins you have collected so far
Next is the Boss meter this shows you the boss's health for each level. It is
empty until you reach the end boss. Each large filled box equals ten small
dots. Each small dot equals one normal- powered hit.
Next is the weapon it is a small box that appears when you pick up a weapon.
Next is the timer. If it runs all the way down to zero. You will lose a life.
Next the High Score
Then last of all is your current score.
5. Items
~~~~~~~~
Along the way, Toki can collect a variety of items. Some are weapons, some are
useful in other ways, and some are worth points. Some are carried by enemies;
others are just lying along the path. Pick them all up if you can.
Weapons
Box with single dot - This is the Double Weapon, and it will make your shots
twice as normal as normal.
Box with the X - This is the Wave Weapon, and it will turn your shots into
two shots that move like a wave.
Box with three dots - This is the 3-way Weapon, and it will let you fire in
three directions at once.
Longer box with flame - This is the Flame Weapon, and it will let you shoot
a stream of flames.
Longer box with fireball - This is the Fireball Weapon, the most powerful
weapon of all! It sizzles most enemies with one shot. When you have this
weapon, a power meter will appear. If you wait until the meter is full, the
shot will be more powerful.
Helmet - when you have the helmet, enemies cannot hurt you. You will still
be hurt by falling traps, so be careful.
Clock - This Item adds time to the timer, giving you more time to complete
the area.
Heart container - This item, when collected and filled with a small heart,
allows you to take one more point of damage in each life.
Extra life - This item will add one number the number of lives you have left.
You should try to grab every extra live you see, even though they are usually
in the trickiest places to reach.
Food - these tasty items will add points to your score, they include
Strawberry, Turkey, Apple, and Banana.
Shoes - These magical rabbit shoes give Toki an extra spring in his step.
Toki will be able to jump much higher than usual if he wears these.
Key - Some of the rooms are locked and guarded by monsters that have the key.
You will have to defeat the guardian to get the key and proceed.
6. Enemies
~~~~~~~~~~
This section consists of descriptions of some of the enemies and monsters
Toki will encounter during the course of his trip.
Bouncing Monkey - This hyperactive monkey just will not sit still. Try to
hit him while he is still far away because he can get very close with just a
few bounces.
SeedPod - These appear in groups of six.
Smoke Genie - The genie just appears over your head and drops spears.
Armour Lizard - You'll have to aim low or jump high to avoid being hit by
this fellow.
Flying Head - This guy flies by flapping his ears! Watch out for those
missiles he fires though.
Ape Warrior - These extremely tough guys are guardians of the Golden Palace.
Magpie - The larcenous bird often carries stolen items around in its beak.
Flaming Fish - He's not nearly as hot as he thinks he is, but he is still
dangerous.
Baby Dino - Watch out for the eggshells when he breaks out. He'll shoot fire
at you, so get him quickly.
Dancing Penguin - All he can think about is dance, dance, dance. If you are
not careful around him, he'll being dancing at your funeral.
Guardian Squid - He will block your path with his many arms, and he will
shoot many little squids at you too. It takes many hits to defeat him.
Crested Turkey - This big fellow would make a great Thanksgiving Dinner.
But if you let him get too close to you, you will find yourself on his plate.
7. Levels
~~~~~~~~~
Labyrinth of Caves - This huge network of caves is controlled by Moornar,
and he doesn't like you! You'll be climbing up, down, and sideways on vines
and jumping from room to room. Watch out for crumbling floors.
Lake Neptune- Get your swim fins and snorkels ready, 'cause the water is
fine! You'll be swimming for your life through this large lake controlled by
Rambacha. How long do you can hold your breath?
Caverns of Fire - The mighty Mogulvor likes things hot, so he's moved into an
active volcano! Watch out for the deadly molten lava in addition to lots of
nasty enemies. If you can't stand the heat, get onto the next area.
Ice Palace - When you get through the mountain, you come out at the icy peak.
This is the domain of Zarzamoth, the woolly mammoth. The floors and walls are
made of ice. Be sure to bring along your mittens.
Dark Jungle - Thick, lush rain forest covers the valley floor. Lot's of
dangerous animals run free here, and some of the plants are deadly too!
This is the domain of Bashtar the Invisible Warrior.
Golden Palace - This palace is where the magician known as Vookimedlo is
holding Miho. Part man, part animal, he runs the palace with an iron, not
golden, fist. He is very strong and protects himself with magic.
8. Play Strategies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you play the game, you may try several different strategies before you
find the one that works for you. Here I'll explain a few possibilities, and
tell you how to earn an extra life or two along the way.
Play it safe - You can stay on the safe side by shooting each enemy as soon
as possible.
Go for broke - By jumping on certain enemies, you can collect some items
that would otherwise be out of reach.
Extra lives - There are three different ways Toki can earn extra lives.
The extra life item as described earlier. Or you can gain an extra life
every 50,000 points, or every time you collect 50 coins.
9. Walkthrough
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stage 1 - Labyrinth of Caves
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The evil hand of bashtar has seized lovely Miho, Her beloved, the mighty
Toki, has also dealt a wicked blow. Now reduced to a lowly ape, Toki must
risk a perilous journey to free Miho and regain his manhood.
Typical first level. Not too hard, It's main reason is too get you familiar
with the game.
Toki starts by some jungle ruins. Make your way right, killing the flying
seed pods for coins, and the triangular plants for safety. Watch out for
that White monkey, jump on his head three times to put him out of commission.
As you enter the cave, kill the flying bird to receive the Wave Weapon, and
then shoot the cone shaped spiky thing for some food. Also make sure to get
the bouncing monkey before he gets you. Get the football helmet by stepping
on the platform, but jump out before you get hurt. Be sure not to rush this
new area. If you stay up top and shoot the two flying animals, then jump down
on to the monkey's head, and shoot the booby trap before it hits you. Jump on
the seesaw with the weight to launch yourself up. Make sure to watch for the
broken egg, as it will also hurt you. Shoot the first three heads on the wall,
and to hit the fourth, shoot up twice and jump after your shots to watch it
die. Climb up, shoot the monkeys and get the Flame Weapon, then continue on
your way. For the next section you have two choices, 1) you can kill the bird
and two crabs then climb down the vine, or 2) simply jump down. When you go
down, whichever way you choose, watch out for the enemy who pops out at the
bottom. Kill the Spiky guy to get food. Continue on, make sure you kill the
three next enemies, then jump on the White Monkey and get the 3-Way Weapon
above his head. Jump across the pit, but watch out for the collapsing ledge
and the two enemies on the other side. Start climbing the stairs but before
you reach the top shoot the bobbing enemy in front of you. There are some
shoes up ahead, and after you jump on the weight, use the shoes to get
another football helmet. Now head right, and kill the seed pods for coins.
Jump across the gap and get ready to face the boss.
Boss: Big Brown Headed guy! Easy boss. Stand on the opposite edge of the
screen and keep shooting him and his bouncing monkey minion's attack you,
and when he jumps, run under him to the other side of the screen.
Simple.
Stage 2 - Lake Neptune
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having safely traveled the labyrinth of caves, and escaped the jaws at the
gate of Moornar Toki sets out across the shark-infested waters of Neptune.
But beware the eyes of Rambacha!
As you start Neptune Lake you will be under a cliff with a green monkey
firing a canon. I don't know how Toki got there but now he has to get out
and save Miho. Start up the hill and jump to shoot the green monkey. Grab
the double gun and shoot the enemy above your head. Then start up the vine,
about half way up you can shoot the two flying foes on the left side of the
screen. Once you reach the top, there are nine enemies, seven of them which
can be killed in a shot or two. Try to shoot the enemy being encircled and
all the surrounding enemies will die instantly. Then just shoot the other
two. Jump down to your left, but down worry there is a platform ready to
catch your fall. Then jump to your left again to snatch up the flame weapon,
and climb up the next vine. Make your way to your right and you will find an
ensemble of enemies, you must worry about the flying angel ghost and bouncing
monkey, as the seedpod will be back. Once they return just shoot them down
and take their coins. Now its time to see if Toki can swim. Turns out he can.
Jump in and grab the 3-way weapon, and use it to make your way to the bottom
of the screen, get the wave weapon and head to your right. Shoot the crazy
turtles and make your way through the hole in the wall. Once you're through,
head up and shoot the other circus of turtles, then jump out of the water to
receive your 3-way weapon again. Continue on to your right and jump out of
the water to shoot the oncoming bird. Once its dead, grab the helmet and
prepare for King Triton, but don't fret he is a pushover. If you still have
the helmet, swim into him and keep shooting. If for some reason you do don't
still have the helmet just swim behind him and shoot him in the back. I know
it's not the honorable thing to do, but you can do it anyway. Then continue
up the corridor. Once you're out of the water jump on the moving platform
ahead, shoot the bird and the ghost then prepare for Rambacha.
Boss: Rambacha
Flying Eyeball dude, rather easy if you know what you're doing, and that is
what I'm here for. Stand underneath of him and shoot up. As his eye really
opens move out of the way, then jump, then jump on his eyeballs while firing
at Rambacha. He will then disappear, once he reappears over you continue to
shoot up until he dies.
Stage 3 - Caverns of Fire
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Made bold by his recent conquest, Toki enters the blazing heart of the caverns
of fire in search of Miho, here he will face a deadly test against Maguldor,
the beastly guardian of this underground inferno.
As you start off in he caverns of fire you must start heading to your right.
Jump on the moving platform to get across the pit of burning magma. After
you're across the pit look out for the white monkey. You can jump on his
head to receive the charge weapon. Jump across the next pit and continue on
your way, but be cautious of the traps on the ground. If you don't step on
them they can't hurt you. Look up between the two traps to shoot the ghost
hovering over top of your head. Continue to the top then ride the lift down.
At the bottom shoot the flaming bird to receive the key. You may use the
helmet on the left to help you if you need it. Jump down to your right and
collect the power weapon, but watch out for the traps again. Continue down
the slope and shoot everything in your way. Then head to your left shooting
barriers and ghosts as you go. Continue up the hill and shoot the bouncing
monkeys. Climb down the vine, and ride the platform, continue down and
collect the wave weapon. Ride down the lift and shoot the flaming bird
again. Once you've received the key you can continue on. Climb down the
slope and shoot the enemy hiding below. Drop down the hole onto the platform
to ride across the lava. If your are feeling perky you can jump on the moth
like enemies heads to acquire the 1up. Continuing on to your right will be
many bouncing monkeys and traps. Make sure you eliminate them all. Next you
will come upon a large gap; you must time your jump and grab the swinging
vine. Jump off to grab the power weapon then shoot the armour pod. Continue
on shooting Dino's and jumping gaps. Next swing across the vines, but don't
stay in the middle or you'll fall in. Make your way to the boss on your right.
Boss: Maguldor
Maguldor likes to burp, but you will learn to hate it. You have to shoot
Maguldor while his arm is in an upward position or he will just block your
shots. But that's not all you have to worry about, when he burps you have
to shoot the burp out of the sky. If you don't you may just get squished.
After Maguldor melts away you can collect your prize.
Stage 4 - Ice palace
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From fire into ice Toki's mission takes him into the forbidden reaches of the
Ice Palace. After swimming the underground passage he must emerge to fight
the frozen monster Zarzamoth.
You start out in this Ice Palace heading to your right. Once you come across
a gap in the ground all you have to do is simply jump from grey brick to
grey brick. Once you have made it across shoot the bouncing monkeys and
continue up the stairs. Once you make it to the very top jump on the lift
and go up even higher. If you head to your right shooting all the enemies
and destroying all the traps you will receive a pair of shoes and a helmet.
Head down the lift and jump on the flying monkey head at the bottom. Head
left shooting the 2 ghosts and 3 bouncing monkeys. Ride the lift down, then
jump on the bug to grab the helmet, and open the passage. Next you must dive
into the water and shoot everything in your way. Near the end watch out,
don't let the enemies get their tentacles around you. Jump out of the water
and head toward the boss.
Boss: Zarzamoth
To beat Zarzamoth you must simply shoot him in his stomach. Don't worry,
it's a big target. This boss is not terribly hard if you're good at dodging
his tusks and extending trunk. If you can do this you will be fine. Once
Zarzamoth is defeated you can collect your prize.
Stage 5 - Dark Jungle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The crashing Thunder leads Toki to the dense canopy of the Dark Jungle.
Fighting his way through tangled vines. Toki faces a deadly contest against
an old enemy, the pouncing Bashtar, If he wins, Miho won't be far.
You start in what looks like the Amazon. Head to your right and jump over
the pit of spikes. Keep going, once you get to the barriers you can jump on
the moth type enemies heads and grab the wave weapon well you clear the
barriers. Keep walking and shoot the plant that drops in front of you, jump
the pit, and collect the helmet. After you enter the ruin city you get to
swing on the vines again. Once you're across shoot the ghosts jump on the
white monkey's head and grab the shoes. Then make your way to the catapult,
and fly high. If you still have the shoes you can jump to grab the 1up, if
you don't just jump on the moths back. Climb up until you get to the next
catapult, then use it. Keep on your way and swing across the next pit.
After that you have to time your jumps to safely make it across the next pit.
Then prepare for Bashtar.
Boss: Bashtar
The secret to beating Bashtar is to get behind him, if you can manage that,
then you only have to shoot up at his heart well his hands aren't protecting
it. Once you defeat Bashtar's heart his feet and hands will die as well.
Then you can collect your prize.
Stage 6 - Golden Palace
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Toki's final quest takes him to the place of Miho's imprisonment the Golden
Palace; Skating across the bridge of this Toki must battle his way through
to his greatest foe Vookimeldo. Everything hangs in the balance.
In the Golden Palace you must prepare for the final boss. Head to your right
dodging traps and shooting henchmen as you go. Once you come across the
flying head just jump on it. Head up the stairs shooting the henchmen and
get ready for the fun part. Yes that's right you get to go skateboarding.
Just jump on the skateboard and let it do all the work. Jump across the pit
and grab the helmet but make sure you land on the next skateboard or else
you will die. As you continue on you will have the opportunity to grab some
coins and the wave weapon. Then abandon the skateboard and jump to land.
Shoot the henchmen and head up the stairs. Then yah, that's right more
skateboarding. Jump on and try to grab the 1up, continue on and grab the
helmet. As the skateboard begins to leave the track hold right on the
controller the whole time to land on the next skateboard. You can grab the
shoes but the are most likely just going to screw you up. Then you can grab
the charge or the flame weapon and abandon the skateboard for the last time.
As you reach solid ground shoot the henchmen and head on over to the end
boss, Vookimeldo.
Boss: Vookimeldo
Vookimeldo is obviously the hardest boss in the game. He seems to have three
forms. The first for is harmless. Wait until he transforms then blast away,
basically everywhere is a hit. But watch out for the little spinning disks
he fires at you. Once you have defeated his second form be prepared for the
hard part. You have to shoot his heart, which can be awfully hard to hit
sometimes. At the same time you must dodge his three orange balls he fires
at you and his head when he charges you. Once you have finally beat him it
is...
The End. Your Quest is over.
The evil forces have been conquered. Toki, the warrior, embraces his
sweetheart Miho in his arms. Now that your quest as the hero character of
the game is complete your are certainly ready to fight through life as the
human being, making the best of the valuable experiences you acquired during
this game.
