01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'The Magic Candle' for the NES, an RPG released by Sammy Studios in
1992. It was only released in Japan, but a NA localization was planned at some
stage. Unfortunately this never happened. There are other games with the same
title, but they have absolutely nothing in common but sharing the same name. If
you know 'The Magic Candle' for the PC, C64 or Apple II then you have never
played the NES game.

The game is obviously in Japanese and you may never understand the story
properly if you can't read the language. Luckily this is a basic Dragon Warrior
(Dragon Quest) clone with only one character, simple level-up & equipment stats
as well as straightforward quests. As long as you try to get into the menus and
use these lists as your guide for items, weapons and the such, it will still be
quite enjoyable. Because the guide uses Japanese names, make sure you can read
Shift-JIS by switching your browser's encoding if necessary.

Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!

02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200
===============================================================================

Getting Started:
````````````````
After the introduction, select START to begin a new game. Select either normal
or fast message speed. Use the CONTINUE option if you have previously saved a
game at a Church. When you begin a new game you will be asked to input the
Hero's name.
Controls:
`````````
START    Inventory
SELECT   Spells
D-Pad    Move, Menu selections
A        Confirm selections, Show status window, Talk, Open Chests, etc.
B        Cancel selections, Close Windows

Battle Commands:
````````````````
こうげき Attack
じゅもん Magic
どうぐ   Items
にげる   Escape
Display:
````````
Press START and pick the first option for a stats screen.

ステータス Stats:
HP  = Current Health Points
MHP = Max Health Points
MP  = Current Magic Points
MMP = Max Magic Points
ちかち   = Strength
すばやさ = Agility
こうげき = Attack (Strength + Weapon Power + Bonus)
ぼうぎょ = Defense (Agility + Armor/Shield/Helmet Power + Bonus)
GOLD     = Amount of Gold held

そうび Equipment:
ぶき   = Current Weapon
よろい = Current Armor
たて   = Current Shield
かぶと = Current Helmet
(なし means 'none' is equipped)

ソング = Song (?) These are the four fragments you collect throughout the
journey.

The rest of stuff in the inventory screen include your equipment and items. The
little (E) next one indicates it is currently equipped. To equip or un-equip
anything, simply press the A button. Do not forget to do this for newly
acquired equipment.

When your HP drops below 25% the menus will turn green to alert you of this
status. When you die it turns red, but obviously a little too late for alerts
at this point.

Towns:
``````
S = Shop
I = Inn
C = Church
Shops:
かいたい = Buy
うりたい = Sell
Items sell for half their original price. Shops only keep limited supply of
items. Once you buy the last one, it won't have it for sale again. But wherever
you sold your stuff it will still be for sale.
Inns cost more as you gain level, regardless of how much HP and MP you need to
heal.
てまる = Stay -> はい/いいえ (Yes/No)
やめる = End (Conversation)
Church:
おいのり = Save -> はい/いいえ (Yes/No). If Yes, then after saving it asks
"Would you like to continue your journey?" -> はい/いいえ (Yes/No)
やめる = End (Conversation)
Basics:
```````
Gold, you get it from defeating enemies. It is used for buying and selling
things such as weapons and equipment, but also healing items. All enemies will
drop a minimum amount of gold, but usually a little bit more. The beastiary has
these figures.

Levels, make sure you are high enough for each new area you wander into. The
maps will tell you where the area is changing, but you may also notice there
is a desert instead of grass land coming up. If there is an enemy you have not
met before it is very likely you are entering a new area.

Use the Wind Stones to escape back to town if you think you can't make it
without dying. They are also quite convenient if you don't want to walk back
long ways or through tough dungeons. Just make sure the church you will
teleport to is the one you want to be at, because it will go to the one you
saved last.

The game cycles through day and night. It could be a simple effect, but could
have some effect on your hit rate, or the enemies. I have never noticed this
to change much so I assume it's the former.

Cheats:
```````
If you need extra help beating the game, use the level gaining cheat as
described in the Experience Chart section.
For extra money, set the addresses 6CD8, 6CD7, 6CD6, 6CD5, 6CD4 to value 57 for
99999 Gold. If you 'unlock' the addresses again and gain more gold, the gold
amount will be displayed as something like GOLD00799 which actually means you
have more than 100,000 gold. If you spend some then the number will go back to
the normal display, so this does not mean you lost 100,000 and only have 799
left!
03.)                    WALKTHROUGH                                  G0300
===============================================================================
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                       CHAPTER 1                                    G0310
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Show the てがみ (Letter) to the priest. Attack or attempt to escape from the
monster, but you are too weak to really do anything about it just now. When you
awake, talk to the priest in his bed. You will receive a ときのかけら (Time
Fragment). Talk to the girl near the south and she will move out of the way.
You get your こがたのけん (Bronze Sword) and たびのふく (Travel Clothes) back.
Equip both before wandering outside of town.
やくそう           Herb                   7
どくけし           Antidote              10
かぜのいし         Wind Stone            30
You start out at (*). Go left to the town center. There is a priest at the
north side, a shop to the east and an inn south of there. If you go all the way
south you end up on the outskirts where (weak) enemies start to be encountered.
You might want to upgrade the weapon to Copper Knife while gaining a level or
two. You get the Cure spell very early so you don't have to run back and forth
to the Inn all the time. When ready, go west to arrive in Tohuto.
It will take you some time to gather the money for all this. You may not want
the most expensive armor right away but it's definitely worth it. If you don't
upgrade at all, you may have trouble in the next area. Once you are leveled up
a bit more and have better stuff, go south from the inn and southeast into the
desert.
The Scorpion Spider is the first one to be actually able to poison you. Thus it
is a good idea to either have antidotes ready, or be at least level 5 for the
magic spell. You will know when you are poisoned by the icon instead of your
level number. Go to the shrine in the south east and interact with the person
lying on the floor. Enter the shrine.
Enemies:
Evil Vanguard
Walk south one screen and follow the path all the way east past the dead guy.
Take the stairs to the north and follow the path north where you will stumble
across a treasure chest (かわのかぶと (Leather Helmet)). You must walk into the
room to discover the chest first. Return down the stairs and check the map to
find the path to the 2nd staircase (south from the dead guy). Take the southern
path on this new floor and when you reach a dead-end, walk further right to
find a chest (かぜのいし Wind Stone). Go north next. You end up facing the boss
soon, so heal up. There is one more dead guy before the boss screen, actually
he is still barely alive and you can chat with him. Make sure you are at full
HP before walking up to the evil looking creature in the next room.
BOSS: Shadow
HP:  60 MP:  40
ATK: 20 DEF: 20
Abilities/Spells: Cure, Thermo
Shadow doesn't have much HP and this fight would be much quicker if the attacks
wouldn't be so tough. One hit should probably reduce your health by 10, so this
means healing up every couple of rounds. If you are having trouble, level up a
bit more to around Level 8 or higher.
EXP:100 GLD:300
Enter the room behind this one to find the imprisoned family member. Talk to
the person in the purple dress to receive the すいしょう (Crystal). Return to
the Outskirts of Merun by walking or using a Wind Stone. You may want to visit
and Inn and possibly the Weapon Shop in Merun before moving on.
Swamp:
``````
Back in the Outskirts of Merun, move north where there is some damaging swamp
(x). You must take a few steps into it, then stand in front of the circular
point in the center. Use the すいしょう (Crystal) to discover stairs leading
down. Take those stairs and take another staircase up at the end. Talk to the
blue-ish turtle in the north screen. Afterwards open the treasure chest to find
a かいふくそう (Recovery Herb). Before you are able to leave the swamp, an
orange turtle named Loco will block the stairs. Talk to it so it tags along, a
welcome ally. Not only does he   help attacking the enemies but also heals you
when necessary. Make sure you have enough health when walking on the swamp
tiles outside as you make your way back to Tohuto.

Tohuto:
```````
Walk into the northeast house and talk to the old person in the corner. He is
so happy about seeing Loco the Turtle that he hands over a てつのけん (Iron
Sword). Great stuff, equip it!!
Enter the Weapon Shop and give the sick person in the bed your かいふくそう
(Recovery Herb). The guy will wake up, but stay in bed. No matter for you,
because you got the リムのかぎ (Key to Rim).
Very small town, but everything is empty for now. Walk over to the Church and
battle the enemy.
BOSS: Lizard Soldier
HP: 100 MP:  50
ATK: 40 DEF: 30
Abilities/Spells: Cure, Aura
With the Iron Sword and your trusty ally, this should be a breeze. Do not rely
on Loco to heal though, he may just attack when you are low on health.
EXP: 40 GLD: 30
Enter the Inn at the south to battle another Lizard Soldier, an exact duplicate
of the above boss fight.
After the fight, use the リムのかぎ (Key to Rim) on the basement door. Go down
the steps. Talk to the priest, then talk to the girl at the top so she moves
aside. Open the chest for a てつのたて (Iron Shield), equip it too! Go back
upstairs. If the lady isn't moving aside quickly, leave the screen to the south
and come back to reset her position. Leave town and talk to the person there,
then return to see it back in full swing. However, the Shop blows so only sell
your old stuff you have left. Save at the Church and you can stay at the Inn
for free! Perfect time to level up so more before the next part, you should
really have no trouble defeating the enemies outside of town before moving on.
Similar to the previous area, but with Kuwagata as an extra enemy. You can
still easily run back to Rim to heal up if you need to. Approach the knight at
the entrance to the Castle when you are ready. I suggest at least Level 10.
BOSS: Samson
HP: 130 MP: 100
ATK: 40 DEF: 40
Abilities/Spells: Mars, Cult
You should hit him for around 20HP each time, and he cannot heal. He can cast
Cult to raise his defense however, so it may take a little longer, as it takes
off around 40% of the damage received. As with the previous fight, do not rely
on Loco to heal you and cast a heal on yourself instead when you are below
30-40%.
EXP: 70 GLD:100
Magician
The first chest we will get has only got a herb, you may skip it if you want.
Go north and take the west route towards a throne room. Walk into it to
discover the chest with the やくそう (Herb). Back at the split, take the path
east all the way and go down the stairs in the south screen.
Down in the basement there are two chests, use the map to find them. The
northern one has a はがねのけん (Steel Sword) in plain sight and a やくそう
(Herb) in the hidden chest whereas the southern one has a かぜのいし (Wind
Stone) once you discover the chest. Equip that Steel Sword straight away!
Return to the previous floor and then go up to the second level.
There are Magicians about here, so be careful. They can hit pretty hard with
their Thermo spells, but it rarely occurs. Enter the room to the north to find
the boss.
BOSS: Sodoms
HP: 200 MP: 100
ATK: 60 DEF: 60
Abilities/Spells: Cure, Thermo, Aura
He is tough. If you aren't at full health he could kill you at any point. Loco
isn't the best as backup, so you need to make sure you are at full health
yourself, which requires lots of MP or items. He also likes to heal up, so this
could take a while.
EXP:500 GLD:500
Once he is dead the first chapter comes to an end.
The enemies you encounter here are already quite tough compared to the previous
chapter. Take care getting to the first town, Sazasu. You start out at (*) as
before so it is only a few screens to the town entrance. You should return here
to level up after shopping in town, to make sure these enemies are not hard to
beat any longer. It is only getting worse from here.
Rest, save and shop for two major items, then talk to Dayton (デイトン) in the
screen slightly northeast of the store. Answers 'Yes' (はい) to his request. As
I've mentioned before, level up to make sure the Eagle and Armadillo are no
threat to you any longer, like around Level 16. When you are ready, set out for
the Desert Ruins. (Ignore the 'M' - Mansion for now, it is locked and we will
get to it later.)
northeast from town into a new area.
Enemies:
You could go to Raywood now, it is quite close so you could save, rest and buy
something before heading back out. If you are leveled up enough from before
then it is quicker to go east towards the (x). Touch the red tree to transport
to the Kingdom of Fairies. Walk through a few screens and talk to the Fairy
blocking the way, then talk to the blue one who has some interesting items for
sale.
Fairy Shop:
はくぎんのけん     Genji Sword         7800
まほうのふく       Magic Clothes       8000
やくそう        Herb                   7
どくけし        Antidote              10
ようせいのみず     Magic Ether           10
かぜのいし       Wind Stone            30
I doubt you can afford those two items right now, but keep it in mind for later
when you've got some money collected. They aren't worth their value, but if you
feel like farming for gold then go ahead and buy them. The sword is overprized
and better ones will show up for less gold later, yet for now its attack power
is unmatched. The Magic Clothes are a much better purchase and can only be
improved in the middle of the next chapter. If you only want to get one of
these, then make it the Clothes. The enemies around the forest give you plenty
of gold to make it plausible to purchase one or both. Else it is still a good
idea to upgrade to the other weapons and armor instead. Either way, buy the
ようせいのみず (Magic Ether) for 10 Gold and teleport back via the nearby red
tree. Now go west towards town, or back there if you have been already.
After upgrading your equipment, go to the western most screen and talk to the
lady in purple near the bed. She will ask if you want to let her use your Magic
Ether (it won't disappear from your inventory), so answer 'Yes' (はい) to get
the やかたのカギ (Mansion Key) in exchange. Return south to Sazasu and use the
やかたのカギ (Mansion Key) on the Mansion door. You may want to rest and save
before though.
end. Go south and follow this wing to another staircase leading up. Take the
only path available to the treasure chest, it contains the ちかしつのカギ
floor where you started and go east towards the locked door. Use the
ちかしつのカギ (Basement Key) to unlock it and then take the nearby stairs down
to the basement. Walk south one screen to find a treasure chest. It holds a
けんしのたて (Genji Shield). Equip it, too. Heal up before you return north,
Once he is dead, you won't have to worry about any more enemies in the mansion.
Leave and talk to Dayton who has moved his bed location here. He will give you
a やくそう (Herb). Leave and walk away another screen. You will stop and hear
something, so quickly run back and search Dayton's remains to find the
やみのかけら (Dark Fragment). I wonder what happened to him...
best armor in the game!  Don't worry, you will get a message you have picked it
up. Don't miss out though. Equip it, too.
Take the lower path left. Imuru will appear and change your Upgraded Amber
Sword into the はじゃのけん (Evil-Smiting Sword). This is the best sword you
can get, kind of late, but still better to equip.
Approach the north to fight the final boss.
FINAL BOSS: Glory
HP: 999 MP: 270
ATK:300 DEF:999
Abilities/Spells: Blaze, Roam, Less
This is it, don't hold back. Use Elixirs as required, you need to rattle down
his HP slowly. If he uses Less, counter it with Cult. Keep your HP up at all
times. If you made it through the dungeon quickly from the last time you slept,
and the last boss battle wasn't too hard, then this shouldn't be too much to
handle either.
EXP:  0 GLD:  0
You have successfully sealed Glory back in the candle.
                       EPILOGUE                                     G0340
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you return to the castle, there is still something left to do. The servants
will inform of this too. Go up the stairs and find the enemy in your way. It's
time for one last fight...
EXTRA BOSS: Rust Macro
HP: 006 MP: 000
ATK:003 DEF:255
Abilities/Spells: -
If you can't beat this guy (or these guys, did they mean 'Rest' because all
these are left of the enemy?), then there is seriously something wrong with you
and you are not worthy of the ending...
EXP:001 DEF:003
Go north to see the King to start the ending.
*Note that experience may vary quite a bit depending on how much you had excess
EXP from the fight you leveled up in. For example, if you just needed 1 more
EXP to level up but instead gain 10, the next number will be different to what
is says in the list. This can be lower or higher. The list is what you need if
you got the exact required amount, which will hardly ever happen after the
beginning area.
If you want to level up quickly, set the hex addresses 6E0B and 6E0C to values
00 and 00 respectively. The next time you gain experience you will also level
up. Keep doing so to gain a level with each fight.
