Character Guide

What is this about?
This is a character guide for DoaE2 (Tenchi wo Kurau II) on the Famicom. It
analyzes each character's stats, gives comments and overall ratings, as well as
an HP chart.
This is not a general FAQ or walkthrough. And by general, I mean the basics of
the game, not military rank since you play as various generals in this game.

....Liu Bei....................................................................
Soldiers : Very High
Tactician? : Yes Strength : 130 ||||||||||
Weapon Type : Swords Intelligence: 200 |||||||||||||||
Terrain : None Agility : 85 ||||||
Comments: A good, solid character you only have for the early bits of the game.
While his stats are nothing too radical, he's quite powerful for the time
you get to play as him. He has a ton of HP, which enables him to dish out
and take heavy punishment.
Comments: One of the best characters in the game. While his HP is somewhat low,
his stats more than make up for it, so make good use of him while he's
with you.
....Zhang Fei..................................................................
Soldiers : Medium
Tactician? : No Strength : 255 |||||||||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Spears Intelligence: 60 ||||
Terrain : Mountains Agility : 120 |||||||||
Comments: Maxed out strength makes him a worthy addition to the team. His
intelligence is VERY low, but that isn't too problematic for the times he's
available. He leaves at a welcome time, well before generals with An Sha
start to appear.
Comments: Just an okay attacker, but you'll want to bring him and Lu Zhao along
because nobody else is around. He's nothing special, but he can be useful
as a filler character. Let him take the lead to help conserve your better
characters.
Comments: Another filler character because nobody else is around. Like Zhu Ling,
put him in front as a decoy so he can minimize the damage the Three Oath
Brothers would otherwise take.
Comments: He's useful early on as a tactician, because your other candidates for
tactician also happen to be good in combat, and you don't to miss out on
them. Later when he rejoins however, he's of no use to you.
Comments: He scores critical hits 100% of the time! He also has a decent supply
of HP and a high Strength rating. Enjoy using him while you can, because he
isn't with you for long.
Comments: Wen Chou isn't with you for long, and that's a good thing because he
kind of sucks. His HP and Strength are barely better than Yan Liang's, but
his Intelligence and Agility are even lower. Worst of all, he lacks Yan
Liang's 100% critical hit rate.
....Zhou Cang..................................................................
Soldiers : Medium
Tactician? : No Strength : 165 |||||||||||
Weapon Type : Axes Intelligence: 80 ||||||
Terrain : Mountains Agility : 75 |||||
Comments: Useful as a filler character because you don't have anyone else for
the time being. He'll quickly fall into one of your worst units overall,
but he can still have his moments as a filler character. Bench once you get
some better units.
Comments: Zhao Yun is an excellent unit. Although his HP is a bit lower than
most, his core stats more than make up for that. Tied with Jiang Wei for
the best character.
....Guan Ping..................................................................
Soldiers : Very High
Tactician? : No Strength : 160 ||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Sabers Intelligence: 110 ||||||||
Terrain : None Agility : 100 |||||||
Comments: Add +10 to all of his stats if you decide to adopt him. Regardless, he
is a well-rounded unit with a ton of soldiers, making him surprisingly
powerful offensively and defensively. You can't expect him to stand up to
the end of the game, but his stats are good enough to last him a sizeable
portion of the game.
Comments: Maximum Intelligence says it all. He's also somewhat fast, making him
versatile in and out of battle. He is also the one only one capable of
using items needed to win otherwise impossible battles, so he is the most
important character in the game.
Comments: Lu Su is with you for the Wu chapter, and he's very good for that
time. Very intelligent, but he can hit harder than you might think - part
of it is due to his high soldier count, but he also uses swords, and the
Iron upgrade for swords comes before spears, axes, or sabers.
....Wei Yan....................................................................
Soldiers : Medium
Tactician? : No Strength : 230 |||||||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Axes Intelligence: 90 ||||||
Terrain : Mountains Agility : 130 ||||||||||
Comments: A solid, heavy hitter for the most part. His low Intelligence may be
detrimental in the later bits of the game, but he's not bad by any means.
Comments: He's the only bow-user at your command, so he can attack twice, even
though bows are less powerful than other weapons. He's also above-average
is every category, making him a useful character.
Comments: As a combatant, he fails miserably. But he's VERY intelligent, making
him viable to select as your tactician if you want Zhuge Liang in the front
five, fighting.
....Meng Da....................................................................
Soldiers : Medium
Tactician? : No Strength : 180 |||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Swords Intelligence: 155 |||||||||||
Terrain : Mountains Agility : 185 ||||||||||||||
Comments: He's very fast; only beat by Jiang Wei in that department. He's also
moderately strong and reasonably intelligent, making him surprisingly good.
Comments: A wonderful strategist you'll have fun using. He sports some of the
best intelligence, he's fast enough to get you through most battles, and he
can fight quite well too!
Comments: Not bad, despite his low speed. His attacks are bearable, and he's
capable with tactics, so I guess he can be useful but you're probably
better off using someone else.
....Ma Chao....................................................................
Soldiers : Very High
Tactician? : Yes Strength : 240 ||||||||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Spears Intelligence: 140 ||||||||||
Terrain : Plains Agility : 175 |||||||||||||
Comments: Consider him a mainstay. While Guan Suo or Zhang Fei may have higher
strength, Ma Chao has an incredibly high HP, so he's arguably the most
powerful physical fighter. He's also very fast, and his intelligence is
tolerable.
Comments: A well-rounded unit with no weaknesses, but since you already have
plenty of excellent characters like Zhao Yun, you probably won't get much
of a chance to use him.
Comments: He's slow as a slug. Even generic enemies are faster than him! He'll
only have a few seconds of glory when you put him as your leader to enter
certain place, which is almost immediately after he joins.
Comments: Unfortunately there's no real reason to use him. He's simply
overshadowed by those already in your party, and you're not even required
to use him to progress.
....Zhang Bao..................................................................
Soldiers : Medium
Tactician? : No Strength : 240 ||||||||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Spears Intelligence: 90 ||||||
Terrain : None Agility : 145 |||||||||||
Comments: For some odd reason you can't take him out of your party if you
include him, even though he isn't needed for any story purposes. This, and
the fact that other characters may be more useful, means you might want to
fill a full team of 7 before you talk to him, so you can keep him in your
reserves. He looks kick-ass, however, use him if you like as he isn't TOO
bad, but because you can't remove him I don't recommend choosing him.
....Jiang Wei..................................................................
Soldiers : Very High
Tactician? : Yes Strength : 210 ||||||||||||||||
Weapon Type : Swords Intelligence: 240 ||||||||||||||||||
Terrain : Mountains Agility : 245 ||||||||||||||||||
Comments: Other than his androgenous appearance, he is excellent. He hits stuff
pretty hard. He makes excellent use of tactics. He's BY FAR the fastest
general available to you. He even consistently has very high HP! Tied with
Zhao Yun for the best character.
Comments: Like Zhang Bao you can't put him in the reserves, but that's where
the similarities end. While you can't "avoid" Guan Suo, that's actually a
good thing because he's solid. His Strength is the best (since Zhang Fei
left a long time ago, and Lu Bu doesn't count), his intelligence is decent,
and his speed isn't too shabby either.
Yang Huai, Zhou Yu, Zhang Zhao, Lu Meng, Bao Long, Jin Xuan, Xiahoudun, Zhang Lu
and Li Dian can be added to your party if you abuse the "Zheng Letter Trick".
I haven't tried this one out for myself, but rather gathered data from
www.lordyuanshu.com
Li Jue, Guo Si, Zhang Ji, and Li Su can be acquired if you use cheat codes via
VirtuaNES. After defeating Cao Ren and he retreats and Lu Bu finishes him off
for you, edit all of your characters' HP down to 1 when the battle appears but
before it actually begins. If Lu Bu and his troops are all defeated, you'll
respawn as Lu Bu and his lackeys.
The secret characters have their obvious advantages and disadvantages. Having
a fixed HP level, they often start out with much larger armies than what you
already have. But since this remains stagnant, a lot of them end up in the dust.
However, Zhang Lu, Lu Bu, Xiahou Dun, and possibly even Yang Huai's stats are
good enough to last them a sizeable portion of the game.

Apparently, the "Zheng Letter Trick" can get you clones of Wen Chou, Pang Tong,
Zhao Yun, Ma Su, Huang Zhong, and Fa Zheng. But this whole "Zheng Letter Trick"
is purely hearsay, so who am I to say anything about it when I'm clueless about
it.

3. HP CHARTS
Here are charts showing each general's soldier count at any given level. Some
characters share the same rating, so a few are listed in the same column. Note:
to date, this only covers levels 1-40. I'll get around to the higher levels some
other day.
