Introduction [s1]
=================
Super Lion King is an unlicensed game that was released for the Famicom in
1995. This game is developed by a company named Super Game and is developed
by Sugar Softec, which was released in various parts of Asia (outside of
Japan).
This unlicensed game is based on the Sega Genesis, which is also known as the
Mega Drive. As far as I know, there are two versions of this game. These two
versions are mostly the same, except one version contains the bonus game "Bug
Toss". The other and more common version does not contain this bonus game, but
the game itself has little to no impact on the game.
Although this "port" of the game is similar to the Genesis version, there are
some differences due to the limitations of the Famicom. This will be explained
in more detail in the next section. Despite these differences, you can
probably use a guide for the Genesis/Mega Drive version to still beat the game.
=================================
Differences Between Versions [s2]
=================================
The game itself does a decent job of being accurate to the real game that it
was based on. The real game has 10 levels, while this unlicensed version has
only 5. Here are all the levels, along with their differences to the real
game.
Level 1: The Pridelands - Mostly the same.
Level 2: Can't Wait to Be King - Slightly different. The ostrich section
is different than the original game.
Level 3: Elephant Graveyard - Missing.
Level 4: Stampede - Missing.
Level 5: Simba's Exile - Missing.
Level 6: Hakuna Matata - Slightly different. Missing final part of the
level with the gorilla.
Level 7: Simba's Destiny - Missing.
Level 8: Be Prepared - Missing.
Level 9: Simba's Return - Slightly different. There are different enemy
locations when compared to the original game.
Level 10: Pride Rock - Mostly the same.
As you can see, all of the exile levels are not in this version of the game.
The Elephant Graveyard and Stampede levels are also missing.
This version of the game also lags in certain areas of the game, due to it
being on the Famicom. The game's controls are slightly delayed, so keep that
in mind when playing this game.

Controls [s3]
=============
Directional Pad: Move left and right, Look up, Crouch, Roll
Button A: Jump
Button B: Roar (as young Simba), Attack (as adult Simba)
Start: Pause
Select: Nothing
Note: In order to roll, you have to press diagonally down-left or down-right.
When you look up or crouch, the screen will scroll up or down. This is helpful
to see what is directly above or below you. You can pull yourself up or down a
ledge by pressing up or down respectively.
===============
Game Guide [s4]
===============
As mentioned in the earlier sections, there are only 5 levels in this version
of the game. You can also access the bonus mini-game at the end of a level by
collecting the bonus bug in the level. This mini-game is called the "Bug
Toss", in which the goal is to collect as many bugs as possible. Refer to the
Bonus Mini-Game: Bug Toss section of the guide for more information. Remember
that not all versions of this game will have this bonus mini-game.
You can also find extra lives (indicated as a 1 up) and extra continues
(indicated as a circle of life symbol, which looks like a sun) in some of the
levels.
There are also bugs to recover your health, so be on the lookout for these
items when you are playing the game.
You will occasionally see a picture of Simba on the walls during the levels.
These pictures will act as checkpoints throughout the levels. To activate
them, just touch it. It should make a distinct sound when you do. These
checkpoints only appears during the young Simba stages, and not in the adult
Simba stages.
-------------------------------------
*** Level 1: The Pridelands [s4a] ***
-------------------------------------
Enemies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chameleon: Can use its tongue to attack you.
Porcupine: Must use your roar on it to flip it upside-down. It is then safe to
jump on it.
Beetle: Will explode shortly after you jump/roar at it.
Hyena: The boss of the level.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will be playing as Simba in his youth in the early levels of the game.
You can only attack enemies by jumping on them when Simba is this small, so
keep that in mind.
You will start at the bottom left of the level, so begin by moving to the
right. You will see a chameleon in front of you. Jump on him (or ignore it)
to continue. You will shortly see a bug above you, which will recover some of
your health. Chances are that you do not need this now, so you can ignore it.
Continue to the right to encounter a porcupine. Use your roar on it to flip it
upside down, which will make it safe to jump on. Continue to the right while
dealing with the enemies to reach a dead-end with several rocks above you.
Keep jumping up these rocks to reach an extra continue. You should also see a
bug that gives you some more health if you need it along the way.
backtrack a little until you see a path of rocks that leads upwards and to the
left. Follow this path until you reach a gap that has a beetle on a platform.
Time your jump so that you will jump on it. Quickly jump to the platform after
it, as it will soon explode. Do not use your roar when you are right next to
it, as that will make it explode as well.
Continue following this path to see another bug above you. Jump to it if you
need more health and continue onwards. You will soon see a checkpoint, so
touch it to activate it. From here, move to the left to the top of some trees.
Continue to the left to reach the mini-game bug. Backtrack to the checkpoint,
and continue upwards (be careful of the enemies).
You will reach another group of trees that you can jump on. Do not jump on
them yet. Follow the path of rocks below it to reach a small opening. There is
another orange bug above you if you need more health. Go through the small
opening mentioned earlier to get a 1 up. Be careful of not falling to far
downwards, as there is a porcupine there. Backtrack to the set of trees that
you can jump on, and follow this path to the right. You will reach another
checkpoint, which is right before the boss of this level. When you are ready,
move to the right to fight the boss.
This boss is a hyena. You can only jump on it when he is tired, so let him
jump around for a while until he does so. After 2-3 hits, the hyena should be
defeated. You can easily dodge the hyena's attacks by jumping over it, so this
fight should not be too difficult once you get used to the controls of this
game.

*** Level 2: Can't Wait to Be King [s4b] ***
============================================
Enemies
-------
NONE
-------
Note that you can jump on the giraffe's head as platforms in this level. For
now, move to the right and jump onto the rhino's head. This will cause you to
be tossed upwards to some monkeys, which will put you on a giraffe's head.
Continue to the right until you reach some land. Be careful to not stand on
the giraffe's head for too long, as it will eventually move its head which
will make you fall. Landing in the water in the level will be an instant
death, so keep that in mind.
This section requires you to do some puzzle solving. As of now, you cannot
progress to the next part of the stage. You will have to move some of the pink
monkeys (by using your roar) to make the correct path.
Start by moving to the closest pink monkey you see, which should be visible as
soon as you land from the previous section. Use your roar to flip it around.
Jump on the nearby rhino's head to land on a small platform. A pink monkey
should have thrown you in the process. Move to this pink monkey and use your
roar on it to flip it around. This will make it toss you to the right instead
of the left, so go back to the rhino's head and jump on it. This will lead you
to the next section of the level.
This section will put you on an ostrich, in which you cannot control. You will
have to dodge several obstacles while riding it. Hitting an obstacle will
cause you to lose a life, so be careful.
While riding the ostrich, you will see an arrow. If you see an up arrow, you
will have to jump over something. If you see a down arrow, you will have to
duck below something. If you see a double up arrow, you will have to double
jump (by correctly timing the jump button twice). For this sequence, the order
to the arrows are:
Up, Double Up, Up
After these three arrows, you will be put into the next section while hitting
a checkpoint. Grab onto the bottom rhino's tail and swing yourself to the
first red rhino's head. You should grab onto it while grabbing the bonus bug,
so pull yourself up. Jump to the right onto the next red rhino's head (you
should be able to make this jump) and continue to the right to the next
ostrich section of this level.
This section will be a lot harder than before, as you will not be shown any
arrows to tell you if you should jump or duck ahead of time. You will have to
use your reaction time for this part. For this sequence, the order is:
Jump, Jump, Double Jump, Double Jump, Jump, Double Jump, Double Jump
You will be put onto another part of the level once you have finished the last
ostrich sequence. This part of the level requires you to manipulate the
monkeys again in order to proceed.
Move to the right to see a pink monkey. Use your roar on it to flip it around.
Move back to the left and jump on the rhino's head to eventually land on a
platform. Roar the nearby pink monkey that is to your right to flip it around.
Jump back to the bottom and roar the pink monkey that you have used your roar
on earlier (which is the first pink monkey that you have used your roar on).
Jump on the rhino's head that is to the left of this monkey to complete this
level.
====================================
*** Level 3: Hakuna Matata [s4c] ***
====================================
Enemies
----------------------------------
Spider: Can jump towards you.
Frog: Can spit projectiles at you.
----------------------------------
This level may seem intimidating, but it shouldn't be that bad. You may want
to avoid the enemies here, but that is your choice. If you fall onto a stream
of water, you will follow its path until you reach solid ground. If this
happens to you by accident, you should be able to find a path back upwards.
Keep in mind that you can control Simba while he is in the air.
Start off by moving to the right and jumping to the right side of the stream
below. While doing so, hold right on the d-pad so you do not fall to the left
side of the stream while falling down. You should land on a platform. From
here, jump to the right. When you reach a platform above you that you can jump
onto, do so. You will have to grab the edge of it and pull yourself up. Do
so with the next platform as well. Beware of the frog here, as it may shoot
projectiles at you while you are trying to jump to the next platform. You may
want to kill it to preserve health. If you cannot grab the edge of these
platforms, just keep trying. The collision detection is bad in this game,
which you may have noticed by now.
Follow the path (jumping over a gap in the process) to reach a wall. You can
actually grab onto the green parts of the wall. Use this to pull yourself
upwards by jumping and grabbing these ledges to reach the top. Follow the path
to the right, defeating a spider on the way to reach another wall. Do the
same thing as before and climb the wall. The difference here is that you have
to grab onto the small rocks on the wall to the left once you reach the top.
Grab onto these rocks and move to the left. You will encounter a 1 up along
the way. You will reach a checkpoint at the end. If you need health, there is
a bug you can get by jumping to the left of the last rock instead of moving to
the checkpoint. You will have to climb your way back to the checkpoint though.
From the checkpoint, move to the right and jump over the first gap to the
other side. At the second gap, jump to the right side of the stream. Continue
to the right to reach another stream (be careful of the frog here) which has
another bug that recovers health. This will lead you to the bottom of the
level with another frog. Kill the frog and move to the left, jumping over the
gaps. This will lead to a dead end, so move back to where you have first
landed to see logs in the water. Be prepared for the most annoying part of
this stage.
This section of the level requires you to jump on logs. You will start off by
jumping to the right, which will lead to a waterfall. From here, you will be
climbing the waterfall by jumping on some more logs. This part will require
patience, so take your time on this part. Note that the logs will show up at
random and at different speeds.
Eventually, you will reach the top of the waterfall. Move to the right to
complete this level.
=====================================
*** Level 4: Simba's Return [s4d] ***
=====================================
Enemies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyena: The same enemy that appeared as a boss in the first level. Can jump and
attack you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From this level on, you will be playing as Simba when he is an adult. In
replace of your roar, you will have an attack that uses your claws. Adult
Simba cannot roll.
This level is a maze with a lot of different caves, which will lead you to
another part of the level. The main objective here is to defeat all of the
hyenas that are in the level. These hyenas will act the same as the first
hyena you have encountered in level one.
From the start of the level, move to the right to the third cave (the closest
one to the right wall on ground level). To enter a cave, press "up" on the
d-pad at the opening of the cave. Enter this cave to see a hyena above you.
Jump on it and/or use your claws to defeat it. Move into the cave that is
to the right.
Using the ledges on the left wall, climb your way to the top to reach another
hyena. Defeat it and move to the right for an extra continue. Move to the cave
below this extra continue.
You will be at the top of this section of the level. Move downwards to the
left to reach a platform. If you duck, you can see what is below you before
you move down, which is really helpful. You will see a hyena below you, so
jump on top of him and defeat him. Be careful to not fall to far down, as it
will contain spikes. Spikes will kill you, so be wary of them. After the hyena
is defeated, jump upwards to the other cave. This cave is slightly above the
cave you have entered from. Enter the cave, and then move into the closest
cave to continue. If you need some health, there is a health bug to the left
before you enter this cave.
Defeat the hyena here, and then move to the cave that was above the hyena. You
may have to grab onto the edge to reach this cave.
There will be another hyena to your right. Defeat it, and then move to the
left to reach a wall. Climb the ledges here to reach the top, and then move
into the second cave at the top.
Move to the right to encounter the last hyena and a 1 up. Grab the 1 up before
you defeat the last hyena, as the level will end when you do so. Defeat this
hyena to complete the level.
=================================
*** Level 5: Pride Rock [s4e] ***
=================================
Enemies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyena: Same enemies as the previous levels. It may be best to avoid them in
order to preserve health.
Scar: Main enemy/boss of the level. He has a lot of really damaging attacks.
It is best to throw him to deal damage to him. Throwing him is required
to beat him at the final encounter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the last level in the game. As you may have guessed by watching the
movie, the objective here is to defeat Scar. You will encounter him multiple
times throughout the level.
Move to the left to encounter Scar. The best way to damage him is to throw
him. To throw, you will have to run towards him and press the "B" Button when
you are next to him. This may take some practice, but this is required to
learn in order to beat this game. Be careful to not get grabbed by Scar, as it
will most likely end in a death. Try to mash buttons in order to break free.
After you have damaged Scar enough, he will run away. Use the small rocks to
the left to move across the gap to encounter a hyena. Defeat him and grab the
nearby bug to recover some of your health. You can also ignore the hyena if
you wish in order to preserve health.
Be careful of the random flames that may appear on the platforms. If they do
not disappear for some reason, move off screen do the flame is gone. When you
move back, it should be gone.
Follow the path to the right until you reach some more little stones in the
wall. Use these small stones with the ledges to the right to reach the top
with a hyena. If you fall down here, you will be back at the start of the
stage, so be careful.
Defeat or ignore the hyena, and then keep moving to the left. You will see
another hyena on a small platform. Try to time your jump so that you can jump
on him while he is tired. When you jump on him, keep moving to the left onto
the small rocks and ledges. It is best to ignore this hyena, as it is hard to
fight him on a small platform. Use the small rocks and ledges to reach the
top.
Move to the right to encounter Scar again. Use the same tactics as before to
make him run away again. If you see him getting ready to attack, do not try to
throw him, as he may counter attack.
You will see a bunch of ledges above an opening to the right. If you keep
climbing up all of the ledges here, you will see a bug to the left that
will recover some health. When you are ready, proceed to the right and follow
this path.
You will eventually reach some more ledges you can climb on. Do so to get
another bug that recovers some health, and then continue to the left. Remember
to dodge the flames that may appear on these platforms.
Keep moving upwards via the platforms to see another hyena. Like before, try
to time your jump so that you can jump on him while he is tired. When you jump
on him, keep moving to the left onto the small rocks and ledges. It is best to
ignore this hyena, as it is hard to fight him on a small platform. Continue
upwards until you can reach the top of the level to encounter Scar one last
time.
Scar will have unlimited health in this fight. The only way to defeat him is
to toss him off the ledge to the right. This means that you have to use your
throw attack to defeat him. Remember that if you are running to the left, you
will throw to your right. Run from the right and to the left to throw Scar to
the right side. Keep doing this until he falls of the ledge to eventually
defeat him. If you see him getting ready to attack, do not try to throw him,
as he may counter attack.
Once you have defeated Scar, you will get the end screen. Congratulations! You
have beaten Super Lion King!
=======================================
*** Bonus Mini-Game: Bug Toss [s4f] ***
=======================================
In this mini-game, you will be controlling Pumbaa while Timon throws bugs
towards you. Try to collect as many as you can before any bug touches the
ground. If you miss one, then the mini-game is over. This mini-game has no
effect on the game itself, and is only here for you to get a high score. This
game may be really difficult, and in certain cases impossible to get a high
score.
You control Pumbaa using the d-pad, while using the "A" button to jump. You
gain access to this mini-game by collecting the bonus bug in a level. Note
that not all versions of this game will have this bonus mini-game.
