Welcome to 'Star Trek V - The Final Frontier' for the NES, never actually
released to the public in the NES days.
This game was canceled before it becoming gold. This means it was never
released in stores or sent to the publisher to get ready for distribution. The
main reason behind this was most likely because the game lacks quality and
somebody down the line thought it would fail and damage the Star Trek license
games. However, in 2006 somebody managed to get a proto out for this game, and
dump it for the rest of the world to play as well. The game being a proto means
it could contain bugs or unfinished code. It does seem to be complete, although
that would explain the short and rushed gameplay. One thing is for certain,
that quality control was not on the developers' minds yet. Last I heard Bandai
pulled out of the project when the movie was a flop and did not feature enough
locations and action to warrant a decent game.
Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy!
There are two parts to this game - platformer and space shooter. The first is
more common and consists of three out of four stages. Only one section is a
space battle.
The game has four stages to complete in total. Whenever you die the game asks
if you want to continue, thus restarting from the same stage you were in. There
is no game over unless you chose to quit. Later on you can skip ahead to a
stage using the password function.
Controls:
`````````
On foot you have the following controls:
A Jump. Hold down longer for a higher jump.
B Shoot. Your standard laser only reaches about 1/3 of the screen.
LEFT Walk/look left.
RIGHT Walk/look right.
DOWN Duck, ride elevator.
DOWN + A Set a bomb.
UP Aim up.
START Un-/Pause the game.
You can jump and move into a direction at the same time. Unlike many other
platformers it is not possible to turn while in the air so you need to face
that direction well beforehand.
Space shooting is different.
D-Pad Aim.
A Fire torpedo, you only have 10 though.
B Fire laser, unlimited usage.
Items:
``````
Badge: Increases health. The large one maxes out health.
(M): Renders you invulnerable for around eight seconds.
(S): Increases your speed for a short amount of time.
Ammo: Shots reach across the screen as long as supply lasts.
Display:
````````
In the platformer stages, there are two bars in the top left corner. The red
vertical one represents your health. If it runs out then you are beamed back to
the Enterprise and have to restart this stage from the beginning. The green
horizontal bar is for power ammo you can pick up from defeated enemies. They
will quickly deplete while you fire but can reach across the entire screen
instead of the standard laser that only reaches around 1/3 of that. The number
underneath this bar is the amount of bombs you have collected. They are also
dropped by enemies. Bombs are not so useful for killing enemies you need them
for some parts of the game.
The space stage has two important displays at the bottom. The left side shows
the Enterprise layout and where it took damage. If there are four red circles
then you are doomed. Underneath are 10 blue dots which represent torpedoes. On
the right side is a radar of the asteroids in the area. They aren't precise and
rather just show how many there are left to shoot down.
Password:
`````````
The main screen has a password option. Input the password to skip ahead to a
different stage. They are given in ()s in the walkthrough, but here is the tiny
list anyhow:
Sybok and his army have taken control of the Nimbus III outpost Paradise City,
and have imprisoned the three diplomats. The Enterprise, upon urgent command
from the Federation, has departed to save them.
You start as Sulu on the planet surface. The stage is purely a repetition of
walking right and dispatching enemies and mortars along the way. Use the jump
and duck abilities to avoid their laser fire and take then all out.
There are two kinds of these army nomads. The pink dress take two shots whereas
the brown capes only 1. The guys on horse just need to be taken off first or
the horse simply tramples you.
When you reach the end there is already the first boss. He flies around the
screen and all you can do is have a brawl-like shootout, there is not much
strategy involved but avoiding his shots and getting yours on target.
Stage 2: (30-00)
````````
Sulu was able to easily free the hostages but quickly learned that it was a
trap. Sybok, with his foot soldiers, board the Enterprise. There, the members
are brain-washed by Sybok's mind melding powers and are converted to his master
plan. Kirk, Spock and McCoy are imprisoned. Scotty attempts to rescue them.
Scotty starts at the very top of a high corridor. What you need to do is
collect six (6) bombs from the enemies around here. The best would be to simply
stay here, and keep going up and down to slay them. Near the bottom is a round
green flashing light towards the left, perhaps the fourth platform. There will
always be an enemy spawning to come back. There is also a constantly
reappearing guy at the very bottom. Collect enough bombs and then take the
third corridor from the bottom to the right. You will know if the opposite side
is that green symbol I was talking about earlier.
In this yellow corridor, take out any opposing forces and watch out for the
camera around half way through. There is an even more danger camera towards the
end of this corridor. Set down six (6) bombs at the elevator and then take it
down.
Stage 3: (50-00)
````````
Kirk, Spock, McCoy are freed. They come to learn Sybok's real mission and
decide to travel to the creation planet. Along the way, the Enterprise must
defend itself against the assaults from the Klingon ship(s).
The blue asteroids are flying towards your ship and you need to shoot them all
down. Use your laser and keep the torpedoes for later. After the fifth hit the
Enterprise explodes which means restarting the stage. The first hit does not
seem to count, it is more like a preview of things to come.
The strategy is not to have too many asteroids in view at the same time. Moving
them out of the screen means you also miss them with the ship. Aim for single
targets and take it down quickly. Aiming is not too easy but there isn't much
you can do about that but practice a little. The Enterprise will automatically
fly in circles and target the remaining asteroids so you will eventually get
them all.
But once you think it's all over, the warp takes you to the next area with
another 13 asteroids to destroy. As before, the first hit does not count as
damage. Same tactic applies.
Next up you face the Klingon ship. If you kept all your torpedoes like I told
you to then this is pathetically easy. Fly up very slow so that the Klingon
ship's torpedoes miss underneath, but keep it in sight half way of your target
and the bottom of the screen. Shoot torpedoes. As you may see, the enemy does
not have to be in the target area but still close enough for the torpedo to
auto-target it. After 8 or 9 hits it will flash blue and you win. It does not
matter if you took one or two damage because it will have gone down so quickly.
Stage 4: (70-00)
````````
Upon arrival on the surface of the creation planet, Kirk...
As you walk right, watch out for bouncing rocks that come pummeling towards
you. There are also volcanic eruptions going on at the same time so watch out
for falling rocks. On the second screen, shoot the pile of rubble for a power-
up.
On the third and fourth screen there are rolling rocks as well, simply do a
small jump to avoid it. There is a chasm to be jumped over. There are no more
falling rocks, however.
On the fifth screen, some jumping action is required. Take it slowly for the
most part, some rolling rocks will show up ahead but simply drop down if you
weren't too eager to jump ahead. The smaller crumbling platform will drop down
as soon as you touch it, so be quick here.
After the next section you will run into a wall. That's the wrong way, so
backtrack a little and go up in-between those two rock formations in the
background. Jump the platforms and then take the next path up in the following
area as soon as you can.
After a few more jumps you will arrive in a totally different area of the
stage, similar to how it started out. Jump over the remaining rocks and soon
you will face the boss.
Both touching it and its strange projectiles get you hurt. With your ordinary
laser fire there is way to hit it at the top by shoot into the air. Either jump
and do so, or jump and fire straight ahead when you are next to it. It's
obviously all risky but there is nothing else of a strategy but getting used to
his movements. You will know when you hurt it after it stops for a second and
turns dark blue. That constant flickering of the background does not help
either. After like a dozen shots it will finally explode.
This isn't meant to be a full review, just a few notes about the game's pros
and cons as well as other things worth mentioning.
Gameplay: 3/10
Plain horrible. It gets a 3 because it is a platformer/space shooter hybrid and
there is some kind of fun involved in playing it after all. The platform action
uses ancient physics, even for Star Trek. The space shooting is quite basic and
repeats over and over. There is not enough strategy involved in any kind of
activity and the solve for Stage 2 is plain dumb.
Graphics: 3/10
The levels are really boring, the characters look horrible. There are lots of
typos in the game, but I suppose that is just lack of quality control.
Sound: 4/10
Most likely the game's best feature. The special effects aren't too great but
the music is usually fitting. It also has some Star Trek effects which may be
cool for some fans.
Overall: 3/10
No wonder this never made it out to the stores, but it's nice to see an old
unreleased game like that after all even if it is horrible. It is extremely
frustrating to play but very short. I would think this is a demo of what they
had in mind for the proper game, at least I hope that is somehow true.
