 1. INTRODUCTION

Spelunker 2 is not a terribly good game, but it was translated at
RomHacking.net, so I thought I'd give it a go. It has some neat parts, but
unfortunately the controls are terrible. Basically you must run through a
bunch of caves, find three orbs, and beat three bosses to free the kingdom.
You have a choice of three players--I went with the explorer.

 2. CONTROLS

Select flips through whom to start with. Start chooses that person, and the
arrows and A/B start off your inventory.

Up only climbs up a rope or stairs. Down crouches if you are standing. You
need this to kill some enemies.

(A) jumps. You can jump straight up, or you can change direction in midair.
Once you jump in one direction, you must push a button to move in another.

You use select to choose your weapon/item. Left/right and then A/B. This also
pauses the game.
Start pauses the game.

 3. STRATEGIES

Often enemies will loop around so you can sit near the edge of their pattern
and knife them.

If you inch towards where you know a monster is, it will half-appear. Wait
and it'll disappear instead of running at you.

If you get hit, often you're invulnerable long enough to run past an enemy. I
would recommend, if possible, running at an enemy and turning away--so it
bounces you to the other side.

Undeads can be used to recharge your holy. Just walk off the screen and back
on.

 4. WALKTHROUGH

   4-1. ROUND 1

Here is the walkthrough with the explorer. There will be some paths you may
want to take, or you may not. They give extra ammo with a risk of losing
health. If you want to gain "holy" then scorpions are the best for it. You
should take six food to start the game.

First you should get the rosary. Walk right. When you see a tapir to the
right, wait and then knife when it runs at you. It will walk into your knife.
There are three of these guys. You may wish to go back and kill them a few
times, to make sure you have enough holy when you get your rosary to be able
to use it. Go down at the right edge. Don't kill the deer. That resets your
Holy. Though you can build it up later, it takes too long.

You can inch left until you can kneel and kill the snake. Then jump over the
mound and go down the stairs.

The snake below may jump at you. So be careful. Wait for it to come to you.
Get the bag to the left, which has food and a hint. Then walk down further
and wait for the scorpion to pass. You may want to go way up the stairs to
distract it, then run back left and down. There's more food and another clue
to the right. Go down again.

Go down the two stairs quickly and then jump over each fire once it dies
down. Then jump over the mound and onto the stairs. From the rightmost of the
2nd-top, jump up and tap right, then duck and knife the snails. They jump
around, but they reverberate a lot, so ducking and knifing will zap them. You
can bounce back and forth to get your holy up to 97 (6 hearts.) Go right. You
will get the rosary! You can try out the rosary as you go back up, if you
have 97 holy (six hearts, in the translation.) You don't have to get near
your enemy to blast him, either. You can also build up holy by going off the
screen, returning, and using your crucifix once off the stairs. Go all the
way back up, and be sure to wield your knife.

You don't strictly need the apples to the far left, but if you want them,
it's not too hard. Just walk to the left, knifing enemies that appear in the
holes. The snakes should be easy if you're patient. Go down past the hole.

Go slightly forward so the bees run at you. Knife them. Stay between the two
mounds that are close to each other to knife two bees. Then go back left.
After the second jump, wait for the bees to come at you. Then jump over two
more mounds and wait for the bees. Jump and go to the end.

Go all the way back right. Knife the bees without ducking--then you may need
to shoot the snake to the right. Go back right all the way.

Take the first path, then stay left of the hole. You can kill two bees as
they fly at you. Back up left and knife right to kill another. Inch right
until you see half a bee, then wait for it to disappear. Otherwise, you'll
kill the deer. Jump over mounds to the right.

Now walk left, waiting for the snakes to jump and strike. Take the first
passage down.

You can save ammo by equipping the knife here, though the gun makes this boss
easy. Run all the way to the right past the first brick wall to the second.
Then turn around and shoot/knife the enemy. It takes 5 shots and 10 knife
attacks to kill him. Once he disappears, have the gun equipped and fire from
the right. You may get hit, but it's not a big deal. Walk to the right and
switch to the food. Use it when you overlap the deer. This gets you a Gold
Key. Switch back to the knife.

Now go left to the left exit in the next screen--run at the snake to the left
right away.

Jump right immediately at the next screen. Equip the gun. Just right of the
mound, fire left three times--it may take four, but in any case, to avoid
damage, Wait for the 3-headed snake to lash out, then jump, then fire away.
Go left. The next snake takes four hits. Then you can walk left to the
volcano scene.

The volcano should not be too hard to pass. You will want to retreat a bit to
avoid lava, but if you get hit once, it's no big deal, so don't sweat it.
You'll be recharging soon enough. Go all the way left, then down.

Now go down the stairs and kill the flying snails to the left. They tend to
jump, so let them come to you, sneaking slowly left. Go down at the passage
to the left.

You don't need to use the crucifix here to dispense with the ghosts--just go
left, get the silver key, and come back.

You want to stand and knife to the right. Get the mushroom and jump over the
flame, push A to swim, and jump over the next flame. Enter the door to the
right. Jump straight up to stab at the bat. Collect the mushrooms and the
bag--more food. Exit the left passage.

You're now in the left of the starting cave. Ready the crucifix. Watch the
pit to the right. Use the crucifix on the undead and ready your knife. Go
down the stairs. Go right and take the right of the two exits.

Go right for mushrooms and food. Use the rosary if you want, then exit as you
came. Incidentally, you can build your holy up to maximum alternating between
the two undead here. Switch to the knife and get out.

Backtrack right, then go all the way right again. You're back at the start.
This time, take the left passage down. Watch for one tapir running left.

Jump over the hole and the mound. Just past, go up the path. Ready the silver
key and use it on the gate. Switch to the knife. Walk up the the monster and
wait a second once it lashes out. Jump into the water and exit right.

Swim across the top to get by the jellyfish as it goes down. Wait for the
seahorse to fire before dropping in for the bag. Go under the seahorse as it
starts up. Duck the next jellyfish.

Jump out of the pool and go right. Knife the bees. Jump over the mounds and
go up.

Hunch down and knife the scorpions when they're one body width away. After
three, there'll be bees. Knife them. Later, two more bees. You can jump
under, or over, a tapir and walk by a deer to get to the next screen.

Jump onto the first platform. Jump-stab the bees. Jump on the next. Wait and
stab the bees. Fall off the plateau when you see a hole to the left. Stab two
more bees. Jump over the hole to get to the stairs.

Run down the stairs. Use the rosary left, then jump-stab the bats. Switch to
the rosary again to get rid of the undeads. Jump over the mound and flame.
Wait for the ghost to drop to use the rosary on him. Get the mushrooms to the
right. No need to fight the snails. Wait for the right time to go up the
stairs and then zap the zombies. Enter the cave.

You have a choice here. Ready the gold key and use it at one of the three
gates.

To the right you can walk across the spikes if you're holy enough and get a
key.

The center has ammo. Shoot the crab to the right. You can stay right of the
rope and face left and knife the spider. Be sure to be able to jump all the
way up. Then for the ropes, jump up, hold up, hit right and jump at once,
then you can fall right for the gold key. Jump on the rope, then jump left
when level with the platform. Jumpto the left and climb down. Take the left
passage.

Go to the right for a bomb and ammo--wait for the red drops to go by in the
water. Jump over the pit to the left then jump left, and go left some more.
Have the crucifix ready when you see the rope to the left. Drop down the
bottom of the rope. Go right. Enter the room to the right. It has a boss.

Stay on the left island. Throw an apple at the lion when it is at the right
edge. It should run back left and be frozen by the apple. Then stab it for a
heart and a half of health. Retreat and repeat. Then stand on the left edge
of the big isle. Knife left til you hit something. The two claws die first.
Then knife the tiger face, jumping after it leaves the ground.

The way back up is not too tricky, but you may have to bounce left in midair
after jumping off the rope. Take the exit to the fork.

Go down. You can exit/reenter to boost holy here if you want, now or later.

You want to go right now. Stand at the right edge and use your rosary to get
the guy guarding your next jump. Jump over the pit and wait for the drop to
disappear before walking past. Zigzag down. Go left, killing two scorpions,
then switch to the rosary to kill two undeads. Get the food (-36 holy??) and
go back right. If you want to regain your holy, just beat the scorpions, go
left and use your rosary. To the right, kill a scorpion and jump up stairs
for mushrooms.

Leave and go right. Use the rosary on the monster right of the steps. Jump
over the mound. The next guys are annoying--they jump--so maybe stay back and
fire at them. Go through the door.

To the right, bombs and ammo. Down the stairs, undead and two flames. Climb
down further. Crucifix zaps ghosts and gives you more bombs and ammo. Shuffle
between this room and the previous one to boost to max holy. You don't need
to get the maximum, though--probably better to take care of that to the left.

The bees on the way back are annoying--jump-knife them.

Go left immediately to outrun the tapir. Hack other monsters as they appear.

Go left at the T.

Go through the water as before.

Go left past the wall and down.

Stab the bees, jump the mound to the left, and go down.

Shoot the tapirs, if they appear. If not, head down. You can probably take a
bit of damage and head down.

Jump to the left and swim up until the right jellyfish goes down. Then swim
over it and wait for the next to go down. Swim over it. Get out of the water.
Climb down.

Quickly climb down the stairs and knife the snake if it is close.

Keep going left til you see a bat. Stand on the right of the middle stair and
jump-knife it. Switch to the crucifix and go down the stairs. Stand before
the next stair and jump-knife. Use the crucifix to get to the four mushrooms
and the bag. Stand by the stair on the way back to zap the bat, then use the
rosary on the undead. Stand by the next stair for the next bat. Go back up
the stairs.

Head right up the steps past the scorpion. Use the rosary on the ghost. Jump
over the 2 pits and use the rosary on the ghost between them. Wait for drops
to fall before going by them. Hit the button hard to get over the flames and
soft to get under them--start going right once they recede. Wait for the
drops before jumping and ducking left for the bag. Then jump right. Dispatch
the ghost if you want to. you may want to shoot or even bomb the crab to the
right.

Jump on the pink ledge in front of the door. Walk left til you're off it but
haven't fallen down. Tap right. Crouch and drop the ball. Wait. Enter where
the gate was. You've solved the first bit!

   4-2. ROUND 2

Walk right and get the food. Now navigate the three platforms--usually best
to jump when one hits the bottom. If you must, you can reverse your jump in
midair. Be a body length above the rising platform to the right for safety.
Also, don't jump from the very top, or you'll hit your head. This is a
recurring theme when you get to the ropes later in the round. Avoid the red
drips and jump up the steps. Using a bomb here, if you have an extra one, is
a good idea. Otherwise you waste a lot of ammo on the giant snail, and you'll
take damage from the small ones behind the mound. Take the stairs down.

This next room kind of sucks because if you flee to the far right, the snakes
will hit you if you try to crouch and fire. You will go downstairs instead
and get hit. So just kill them and then go down later.

The scorpions in the next room are also pretty easy, unless they hog the
stairwell. Go left a bit and that should draw them over.

The next room has a mushroom. Wipe out the ghosts with the crucifix.

At the bottom here, zap the ghost then jump on the rope. Go left and use the
crucifix at the 2nd-left grave/cross. Bam! A bigger gun. Back up the rope,
jump right and over the pit. Zap ghosts as you go by. Go down. Jump up. Go
down. Jump over the enemy. The jumping from rope to rope is annoying because
you must hit A and right at the same time, and sometimes the game doesn't let
you jump. You need to be patient and use save states a lot. A couple more
ledges and enemies and you'll find a gold key. Get it and go to the right
edge, then go back left and push down (the small dot left of the bones seems
to work,) where eventually you'll find a secret passage.

***the detour here is not recommended because it eats a silver key. You have
a passage past a silver door and fire before a rope leading down, then
stairs. Go down them for food and a note--step on graves 2, 10 and 12! You'll
get to 10 and 12.

On the way back, if you fall down, avoid all the other graves--stepping on
them drains your Holy. Falling down may actually be easier than staying on
top, though.

You'll take some stupid damage as you go back up. But you'll regain it soon
enough. The room above where you started features two snails and a mound
guarding a mushroom.

Next are two bats. You can avoid the top one and time the bottom one to jump
and stab it.

Above you have an entirely new big room. There are two doors: the lower red
one requires a bomb, and the upper one requires a silver key. You don't need
to take the bomb door to the left out, as it only has a hint, and bombs are
probably more valuable to wipe enemies out. Take the rope up and jump right
from a bit below the ledge. Jump over the mound and jump under the first
spider. Jump over the mount to the right. Jump and climb up the rope for ammo
and go back down. Duck and knife the four snails and then open the bomb door
to the right. Get the silver key and retreat. To climb down without damage,
be just above the bottom of the rope and jump right and knife left. You'll
want to take the stairs up here. The brief journey through the outside world
saves time and your health.

Go past the deer--navigate the steps so you can jump-knife the bees--and jump
in the pool. Jump out of the pool when the bees guarding the gold key go
left--then grab the key and jump back down. Then jump-knife the bees as you
collect the apples. There's another pool, and you can jump out, stab the
plant, and jump back in. Repeat with three stabs per try til you kill it. The
next steps out of the lake lead to stairs down.

Get the mushroom to the right if you want and go to the low bit on the lowest
hanging rope. Jump left. You should miss the two ropes to the left, but if
not, drop down and jump left as needed. Jump over the spikes. Jump left onto
the big rope. Now the scorpions by the top of the rope are nuisances, but
jumping left without falling into the lava is, too--a lot more of one. I just
took a bit of damage with the scorpions, knifing them to death as I jumped
left. There's one more bat to take care of before climbing down and jumping
right and taking the diagonal passage down.

You may wish to shoot the bats as they take a long time to fly at you. You'll
recharge with the ammo and bomb above anyway up the stairs. Go to the right.
It's possible to jump from the stair to the right to the rope, then get the
mushroom, and come back down again, but that takes a while. You'll have to
deal with the bat in any case. Jump up the rope, climb down, and jump up the
rope. Repeat. Get the bag with food. Jump along the bottom and use the
general rope climbing trick to get the ammo box. Use the crucifix on the
ghost, then climb up the rope back left to get to the bomb door you saw above
you. Use the bomb. Go right, get the mushroom, jump-knife the spider on the
rope, jump on the rope, go down and right.

Fire at the larva, then fire again to get the bomb and ammo. Jump-knife the
spider. Go to the top, run right, jump on the rope and long-jump right to
avoid the larva below. Walk across the steps and jump right onto the first
rope over the lava. Climb down/jump right til you're across. You may wish to
bounce your last jump back left. You may also want to inch right so you can
see half of the larva. Then it will disappear. Of course, you can take damage
running over it, and that is not so bad. Enter the door nearby--strictly
speaking you don't have to, but having an extra silver key is useful.

You're at another choice of three gates. Take the middle one for a bomb and
ammo, jump-knifing the spider. The right gate has just a key, so don't worry
about it, unless you need to bump up your holy by killing the ghost there,
retreating, etc. Take the left passage.

Get the mushroom. Jump to the edge of where the snails patrol and knife them.
Go to the right for more mushrooms. Climb up the rope and jump over the pits.
Jump up the rope--you can go down if you want, to shoot the big snails and
get food, but you probably don't need to. Jump across the ropes to get a
silver key and then jump back. Get out.

Retreat from the three gates.

I'd just take damage running into the larva here, then jump up the rope to
the right and enter the cavern.

Jump-knife the spider on the rope, then get the bag to the left if you want--
mushrooms below too. Fall for them. Up the rope, jump right twice, down the
rope, knife the small scorpion, and shoot the large scorpion twice. Jump up
the rope and go right to kill the scorpion and get the ammo. Knife the spider
to get down safely. Jump up the next rope for more ammo. Up the next rope and
use a bomb at the door, then down the next rope. You don't need to shoot this
scorpion if you don't want to waste bullets, and you have the health. You
will regain it in the next bit, anyway.

Knife-jump the spider, down the rope and open the silver door. Take the
stairs down.

Get the mushrooms and jump-knife the bat. Down.

Use the crucifix on the ghosts. Down.

**Below is a detour I don't recommend, because it wastes a gold key. You
don't have enough gold keys at this point to get there. It's probably best to
open the gate at the next one.**

The larvae present a problem. I would just take damage going left. There's a
door to the left after some ropes.

Take the door to the left and shoot the big crab for more ammo and a bomb.
Get the key on top. Take the center door and jump on the ropes to get the key
on the upper ledge. In the far right there's a satchel with food and a clue
about continuing, but it's not really worth it, so I'd just go back.

**end detour**

After going down from the larvae, you face two crabs. You could do worse than
bomb them. It's probably best to let them hit you on the stairs, before you
climb right and jump. Then jump over a small gap, then right to a rope and
down until yuo get across. You can jump over the gap to the right. There's
another three-platform jumper here. It's no different from the last one--when
the next one is two body widths below, jump right, and you can swerve left.
Near the bottom, be just one body length above where you bounce back. Lots of
climb down and jump up here and if you fall, you can just jump out of the
lava and go right without TOO much damage. Then more jumping right.

Another branch. Take the right one for ammo and a gold key. The left leads to
a boss fight.

This boss is pretty easy. Jump over the gaps and take the rope down right.
Wait at the right and knife scorpions as they come by. When the big scorpion
descends, jump on the rope and throw an apple at him. If his body is down,
fire the apple at him. You want to be able to hit him without jumping. Then
shoot him each time til he starts flashing. Your powerful gun should need
only six hits.

On the way back, you can again jump over the lava with one big leap. Go down.

The bats may hit you once, but use your knife and they'll die.

Take a hit to get past the larvae...preferably on the stairs before you go
down all the way.

**note there is a possibility here of getting the gold key, going back up a
couple of stairs, and taking the detour I did not recommend earlier. This
gets you two silver keys.**

You are back at the other end of the basement you already visited. Use the
crucifix and get a mushroom. Go along the top. All the way left you have a
gold key, and this is all a bunch of jumps you did before.  Fall down after
you get it. Beneath two very adjacent ropes (a pit to the left) jump down and
use the crucifix to regain holy. Two crosses right is an ESP master who
resets your time played to 00:[xx]. There's a tough jump at the end where you
might hit a cross or a mound. The best bet is to jump over the cross and
trace back right while jumping. Worst case, you bounce left. Now you just
need to get to the secret path. It is near the left edge. You have to go to
the very left first before going down.

If the above doesn't work, shuffle a bit left or right til it does.

Now you're in a new area--well not totally new if you took that detour I
mentioned above. Basically you should just go to the left--you can jump over
two blocks at once--and get past two rivers of fire. You can, again, double
jump down the stair steps and even over the next platform. You can even jump
and drop left at the apex before the block at the bottom, though it takes
some damage. You have to use the platforms for the very top. It may take a
couple tries--one to see where the top is--and then the last should not be
hard. Jump before the platform is level with the main isle with the door.

Another entry gate where you need to place the globe on the pink pedestal. Do
so.

   4-3. ROUND 3

Past the deer, there will be five wolves at fairly regular intervals. Knife
them when you need to, but watch out. Enter the castle.

Climb up both stairs quickly--you may wish to wait for the crabs to come left
so you can outrun them. you can also fire back left at the crabs if you want-
-there's a room to the left that holds food with a message, so you can go
there to reload. But you won't need to, since the room after next lets you,
too.

The next room above has cocoons. You can get around them as they just go back
and forth. They will eventually burst and make flies. You'll probably take a
small amount of damage here but nothing critical.

Now retreat to the bottom of the first room. Use the key and enter the
doorway to the right. Get the mushroom and food. You can again afford a
little damage here from the crab, as you have more mushrooms below. No need
to waste bullets.

Go down the stairs and get the mushroom and you can fall off. Go to the
right, using the crucifix. Jump across the fires, climb up the third rope and
jump across the ropes, moving down to jump up. There's a door beyond all
this.

Duck and use the cross after going down the rope. Time things to run under
the bats. Up one rope, jump off--go back left to avoid falling--down the
next, past the fire, up and down again, up the next rope and now you can go
down and get the silver key. You can shoot the snail that plays prevent
defense if you want, but as you'll have to shoot the crab, too, it's wasting
ammo a bit. A bomb is useful here.

Knife the small snails and head to the right. Get the key and go back. A big
snail hides a bag of food, which you probably don't need.

Now retreat to below the rope and stairs two rooms to the left. There's a
passage to the left. Take it.

Go all the way left, blasting undead as you go.

Go all the way left, then go back right and shoot the snail guarding the gold
key. Retreat.

Go up the stairs. Use the silver key. Enter the door.

Take the left branck. Shoot the snail to get ammo and a bomb.

Zap the ghosts with the crucifix. Use your silver key to get beyond the next
door.

Go to the right. Jump the rope for the ammo. Go back left. At the bunch of
ropes, drop down. Jump right from the left of the right isle. Jump on the
carpet and go right. Get the gold key and go back left--use the crucifix on
the ghost that will pop up. Jump across the isles to the left.

New room--go up the stairs to the right and left to get the key. Food is to
the far left, but it's not worth it. You will fight larvae. So just retreat
down the stairs and go left and take the passage down. Jump over the larva
when it is close.

Go right for a mushroom then left and up the stairs. Go right and climb down
the other stairs  to reveal a ghost, then blast him with the crucifix after
you go back up. Jump across the ropes for ammo. Jump back, go down, use the
crucifix and go down.

Down three stairs, jump up the rope, jump in the water, jump on the rope, go
down and go left. You will meet the boss.

He is not so tough. All you have to do is get to the left of him, then
jump/knife, or shoot if you have the ammo. He only looks right. The one trick
is to shoot him as he comes down, so you'll hit his head and damage him. It's
worth taking damage from his minions to get to the other side, and it's worth
using food if you need to heal. Winning gets a third orb.

Go back to the passage leading down. Go left and through the door--though if
you need to raise your holy you may wish to go to the room to the right
first.

Shoot two enemies as you go left--if you have any bombs remaining, you can
use them, too. Go up the rope and you'll probably have to take a hit here. Go
left and keey jumping on and off the ropes. Wait above the enemy til he jumps
to the right and then drop and run left. Go up the rope and left, and when
the enemy disappears, go back down. Go up the left rope and jump-shoot the
next enemy. Get the next bag if you want.

Left door has crab, spider and ammo. Center door has ghost, crab and ammo.
Right door leads to a gate where you place an orb. Go to the right and a
statue will let you know if you can go further. You need 140 (8c) holy.

Get the sword and retreat to the room with the fire throwing tiger above.
Fall left and go right. Go back up the stairs and take out the tiger with a
bomb or guns. Go left.

Go left, down and right. Notice that the screen doesn't stop scrolling as you
hit the wall. If you walk through the bottom wall, you'll find stairs down.
Take them.

Down the stairs to the left and swim right. You will meet Geyla, the big big
boss. Though he hits you for 31 damage at a pop, he is not that hard to beat.
You need to duck and hit him when his shield is down. Eventually he raises
it, takes damage, and backs up. You shouldn't need food, but if you get
cornered, jump on and over him. Enough of this, and he dies, and you get the
ending.

The ending depends on your "holy." You always get to go inside the castle,
but here are the values for each ending:

00-31: "Everyone awaits your return"
32-8b: a treasure chest
8c+  : you get the princess
