??where to get maps

 1. INTRODUCTION

Shadow Brain is a fun NES FPRPG where you have cyberspace on the side. I'm
sketchy on the plot details, but you start out in Harmony Town where you have
to rescue a futuristic place from the clutches of something very shadowy and
very braining. Improving your character isn't hard against the motley
assortment of experience fodder, and people pop up to say all sorts of
things. Puzzles are of the "you must know person A to know B" type and with
crazy stuff like pipelines and such, it's a fun experience with mapping,
combat and some really great backgrounds. You don't need to know Japanese to
be scared by it--in fact, it may help.

 2. CONTROLS

(B) toggles move and non-move mode.

In move mode:
Left turns left, right turns right, Up goes forward, Down turns 180 degrees.

In non-move mode:
You can move among the options with the arrows. Here they are, from left to
right, then up down:

LOOK: useful near a terminal that gives town info
GET: open hand. If there's a coffin in front of you, you open it.
CARD: if there's a door that requires a card, you try all your cards.
TALK: if the person you see in front of you is a friend, they'll talk and
maybe even sell you something
FIGHT: if the person you see in front of you is an enemy, you will fight him.
(note: TALK and FIGHT are for practical purposes equivalent. NPCs will attack
or duck as they need.)
TOOL: use one of the tools in your inventory. Left and right shuffle through
it.
STATUS: gives a look at your hit points, energy, defense and agility, as well
as your current armor. Push A to see Map Data, or which sectors you have maps
for, and A again to see how hooked up your VDS system is. Push B to exit
this.
PROGRAMS: looks through your various programs. Choose left through right. The
map program needs you to do something special to view things for each sector,
though you start out with a view of the opening town (Harmony Town.)
NETWORK: use a network communication portal if it is open.

In combat mode:
As above, you have that 3x3 square. Different commands, though.

   4-1. HARMONY

This is a pretty easy game to get started on. You start with 500 MC's, and
you can always retreat to the start to heal easily. Talk to the pink robot,
and you will regain all your hit points. The big tough enemies are the
cowboy-looking types, but even if one kills you, you will get kicked to the
regeneration part, where you lose half your credits. That's still enough to
get started nicely, though I don't blame you if you reset so close to the
start of the game. You just need to do a bit of fighting to get to the
weapons or armor shop without too much trouble--or, failing that, the drug
shop so you can heal mid-combat.

W 3S 2W N 4W 3S (3W 3S 3E can detour) 2S 2E for drugs that recharge hit
points. Then 2W 3S for armor. Note--W 3S 2W 6S 4W S is another way to get
there. You should be able to find some way where not-too-tough monsters
defend the path. If not, you can restart. By the way, if you die, you go to
regeneration, where 4S E leads you to the drug store.

Buy armor and you should still have plenty of MC's left (spend 210 of 500.)
Then S 3E to the weapons. Buy a sword for 100. Now, when you fight, move to
the sword icon, and you will beat your enemies pretty easily. First, though,
2W 3N W and talk to the guy there. He will tip you off about the Garoryi in
Hope Town, the next bit--if you haven't visited him, the Garoryi won't give
you something you need. You also want to go 4S and enter the warehouse to the
left. With >100 MC left, you can buy his item. It is another piece of the
VDS.

You've done all you can for now, but you might want to build up to level 5. S
2E and keep going through the door south, fighting and exiting. You can beat
this guy up for 2 experience and 10 credits, and he is pretty easy. Don't get
too greedy, and you'll be okay. Retreat when you are down to 20 hit points.
Remember that you can heal at the start for free, although you don't really
need to worry about cash right now.

A word on combat: at the start, just whaling away should work, but you can
use tools if you get low on hit points. You should have some HP tools as
backup, and you should always be carrying a few needles for poison until you
get the antidote chip. Also, if an enemy leaves a coffer behind, GET it
twice. It can't hurt, and it'll usually be hit points or something to get rid
of poison. You can always sell it at the digital market.

To leave, first go through the bottom right door. There are friends that give
you a map piece, and there is treasure, too. S* W* N E talk, W S E* N*.

Then return and go through the center door.

   4-2. HOPETOWN

For this part you'll definitely want to have a bunch of needles to cure
poison. The small green monsters can drain you if you don't watch it. Go 4S
2W 2S 2E 4S 4E 3N 2E and south. When you see a guy on a skateboard, talk to
him. That is Garoryi. He will ride you around the town, and when you return,
you'll have a new item. It will allow you to access the network. You'll see
weird messages for the BBS and so forth, and they're just clues about what
you can do next. If it says "BBS" then the BBS option at a network booth
tells you something new, and so forth.

N* 2W 2S 4W 4N 4W and face south. Go to "network" and now you can use BBS if
you want. The Digital Market lets you sell stuff you found and can't use. Be
careful, though--you may also sell a weapon. The really important bit is the
Network Shop. Pick up ID Card A (the only item there) and now you can go
south to Max's Playland.

There's not much else to do here. The gold will pile up. The wolf enemy is
still your best bet. There is a pair of military people you can fight 4E 3S
3W S E of the network for 8 experience, but they can kick you to sleep, so
you need to watch it. You need to go back for sushi a lot.

Exit again down the center. The exit to the right doesn't have anything for a
while.

   4-3. MAX'S PLAYLAND

There is a hotel 2W S of here, and you'll be using it a lot. The key parts of
this level are the games down the west side. Some are marginally fun and just
get you gold. Some allow you to get ID B.

This is a fun little area where you need to learn how to play a curvy sort of
Pong. This Pong is not terribly hard, and you can practice before the sort of
boss fight. You also need to learn a shooting game. The practice games let
you gamble money, but the main game takes your hit points if you lose. So you
may wish to bulk up to level 8 or so in case of accidents. That'll get you
experience, and as you perfect things, you get a lot of gold, too. There's a
hotel at the top that heals you cheaply, though the bottom one is expensive.
You may need to use a gun to get through some bits.

     4-3-1. THE GAMES

The shooting game works as follows:

The first 4 times, shoot when the disc is bisected by the gridline near the
center. 10, 10, 20, 20
The next 2 times, shoot just after the disc starts to come down. 30, 30
The next time, shoot when the disc comes down, but then after that, shoot
after the disc has crossed and is lined up with the 2nd-left gridline. 40, 40
Shoot when the next one is right of the 2nd-right gridline. 50
Shoot when the final one is over the 2nd-right spike. You have to be vigilant
for this. 50

You get credits for each duck you shoot. You get 500 for a perfect game. You
lose 10 points for each one you miss in the final game.

The pong game is a little trickier, as the bar/ball curves a lot, but once
you figure where to set your block, it is really not too bad. A lot depends
on luck.

The game has two serves: one to the center and one to the right. You want to
be able to hit the one to the center with the edge of your block. That will
send the pole bouncing quickly and be more likely to upset the computer.
Volleying with the computer will not work. If you get a game where you can
just sit there and bounce the serve off the wall, whether it goes to the
center or to the right, then you can probably win without moving. You also
will want to adjust where your paddle is before the serve. You can use the
bottom controls as a basis for where the bar should be.

It takes some time to figure which way the pole will curve, so you may want
to try and stay in front of it, then let it smack across the edge. You don't
have to hit it right on the edge, as getting close will make it fly from side
to side. Then, it is a matter of chance if the enemy hits it back. You should
just stay in the center if it bounces back at you, and you should be ready to
nudge the controller left or right to hit the pole off the edge.

The trick is to know just when to tap your controller left and right. The
best bet is to concentrate on the center and the first serve, and don't
bother to move if the enemy hits the pole back and it bounces all over. If he
hits it slowly, take a chance hitting the pole on the end. The sooner the
better, as eventually he will hit a shot you'll find hard to return. Be
aggressive, and never hit the pole in the dead center if you can help it.

The physics of this is difficult but basically the angle of incidence equals
the angle of reflection in the center. If the pole is going from left to
right, and you hit the pole on your right side, it'll bounce more right. If
you hit it on the left, it straightens out. Spin must be figured out
manually, but it is more important when the pole is going straight. As with
other things, you just need time to adjust.

It's also worth getting aced once if you just want to sit around and see how
many aces you can get in a row, or where both serves go. You'll be acing the
enemy a lot more.

The game doesn't seem to get appreciably harder once you get a lead, so that
is nice.

     4-3-2. WALKTHROUGH

??how to change where enemies are

Walking through Playland is not hard. W* S* and beat the enemy in the corner
room--zigzag around enemies to get there. That gets you a dialogue shaped
item in the tools. It is a password. Then N* E* S* and go east. Use the
dialogue shaped item, and the room falls away. Keep going east. Buy the
weapons 1N and then go 1N to the centaur, who gives you a map, and then 2S to
play the shooting game. If you cheat-freeze hit points, you can just let
everything go by. Only the last one is tough, if you've practiced. With
enough hit points, a few misses won't be relevant. Return to the house, and
you'll get ID B. You may have to go west and back east.

You can come back to your favorite games to pile up risk-free gold, if you'd
like, but it takes longer than fighting. The lower hotel is worth using here
when you go to Vegas, so you don't have to fight through enemies.

   4-4. VEGAS TOWN

The first major quest here is to get the translation system. Once you have
that, there's an experience mill that's tricky to get to. The other is easier
to visit but the guy's nearly impossible to beat without help. Save any
saucers and boomerangs you find as treasure--they'll be useful against Bryce.

Experience mill is W* S* E (N is hotel) E* 5S 3E 2N E and the flak-wolf gives
8 experience and doesn't damage you too much.

Here you should be ready to shoot away at any opponents you may find. Talk to
the woman at 4,4 by going W* 2S 3E S.

Now go back to Harmony Town. Once there, N* W* to the NW corner and pay $100.
Then E* S* back to Hope Town. Look at the monitor and then look at the map.
There'll be a circle--4, 2. GET while facing that square and now you'll be
able to translate the gibberish that other people seem to speak. To test this
out, talk to the lady at 3,2. If she has more to say than !?[heart] then
you've got the translator.

Go south to Play Town and then Vegas.

At 2,f talk to the Max, the man in charge of the casino. Soon you'll get
something over the airwaves labeled SOS1999.

Buy a bunch of plus-shaped tools at the store for the fight with Bryce. He
tends to block your attacks if you don't have the agility. Go back north to
Hope Town, then south down the right side. Bryce is at d,a. Talk to him.
Defeating him gets you the satellite. Now you don't need a terminal to talk
over the Internet. Hooray for Wireless.

Go back to Vegas. Max at 1,a will give you ID C. E* 3S E* N 2E 3S 3E and use
ID C to get to the Government Area.

   4-5. GOVERNMENT

E N* 10E and south. Talk to Ain. You get a vaccine, which appears in your
programs. Go to the government building at 6,9. E 9S 6W N. Push forward 4
times to get to the fifth level. Use programs, then the vaccine. You go to a
maze.

xxxxxxxx
x      x
x$ xxx x
xxx  x x
x   xx x
x!x  x x
xxxxxxxx

Get the treasure. Walk past the eyes. Use the vaccine on the purple lump. Now
you can get past the robot to the north. W 5N E and the way is not blocked
any more. S. Talk to Max. He gives you the VIP Motorcycle program.

Go back to Ain at b,1 and get ID Card D. E* N* and use the card.

   4-6. GREAT HILLS

W* N* and at 1,1, talk to Senior. Accept his quest. He leaves.  1S E* 6S E
and go east.

Note: The EP rechargers are best to get here, since you have limited
inventory space. You can use EP to recharge HP now with the HP program. Don't
worry about the price. It's most important to be able to peel off three quick
shots when you want to. You'll need these for Medical Town.

   4-7. MEDICAL TOWN

There's a lot to do here non-quest-wise. 4E 4N 2E is a weapon shop with a
chainsaw for 1000. It costs EP but is worth it. You often get EP from
monsters you killed. Annoying-dogs here are great experience if you watch
your HP--in fact, you need to check into hotels more than usual here. Be sure
also to go E* 2S W from the entrance. Talk to the heart-headed guy and you
can now see enemies' stats. Useful if you wonder if you should run.

I'd advise getting at least to level 10 before making a run through the next
area. There are enough mid-level enemies here that you may need to shoot
before healing up. Once you're confident you can beat a few in a row, with or
without EP, then you can move on.

From the entrance, E* 3S W 3S and try to buy any of the $9000 items. She
won't let you. Accept her quest. 3N 2E S*.

   4-8. MATERIAL AREA

Cows are tough to beat. They have a lot of hit points. Bring all your EP to
fire on them. Be healed beforehand. If you get a bad deal on random monsters,
leave and return.

S* W* 5S E*. A robot will block you. It is shoved aside. 3E 3S talk east and
a big fight. It gets you the regimen. Back to Medical Town. Try to buy. You
don't actually need any money. You get a bunch of hearts and the test tube
that costs 9000 otherwise.

Go back to Great Hills. W N*. S W and the old guy will give you an item. Now
retrace to the Material area. S* W* 5S E* through a secret wall. Halfway
through--well, sort of.

   4-9. PLANT AREA

E 2S E* 2S through the secret door. LOOK and GET. This gets you a "shield"
program. A few steps and someone talking to you will give you the next ID.
This is another suicide run type area. There's not much to do here except get
to Hacker Town. Retreat and return if monsters are blocking you.

   4-10. HACKER TOWN

On-Line Talk, and Buy ID H when you get the Network Shop notification. You
may need to retreat and return. A suicide run to get to the armory is really
worth it. You may, if you want, buy pills for agility.

N W* 8N e* 3N E S and if you've got to the hotel, you can manage fights one
at a time. 2E S for the armor.

Now you probably don't want to talk to Leila immediately. You may wish to
build up to level 15 or so. By now you should be able to beat the guy in
Vegas with your gun--the guy by the hotel. Just keep shooting, and heal up
when you need to. Defense pills are nice, too, if you have them, but don't go
out of your way. It takes time to retreat and heal, but he gives 100
experience per pop, and each fight shouldn't take more than a minute.

Your next fight, with Takashi, is tricky without your VDS, because you can't
use your powerful guns and swords. In fact you'll need to rely on green items
you bought earlier. It's worth saving at this point.

At level 14/15 you are also able to beat the enemies in the Medical Area
regularly. That is good for quick experience. So you may want to muck around
there before coming back. In any case, you should have a defense card from
the Medical Area for the fight with Takashi, as well as four or five saucers.
You may also want to buy a bunch of heal-alls in Medical Town. Nothing else
is really worthwhile. Ditch any EP stuff before moving on--you should be able
to hack through from the Medical Area to Hacker Town with just a chainsaw.

I'll assume you got back to the hotel, so you can chop through enemies as
needed. W 3S N and talk to Leila. She should be a figure in the dark. You'll
get robbed of your VDS.

S W and Takashi talks to you. W* N* E= N and N to the slums.

   4-11. SLUM ZONE

Here you may just get killed, which sucks, even with super-healing. The
junction has some drugs you can use, but you may get rebirthed on the east
side. It's not too far out of the way. I assume you get through without
getting killed, but use my map if you do. The plot is:

1. enter
2. Jane
2a. optional--N* 2E S* for the transform box at the junction, which may
save money if you've got $5000 and are close to death.
3. try to exit
4. Jane
5. exit and kill Takashi

N 2W 2N 3E 4N 4W 3S and you lose your ID H to Jane. That traps you, for now.
Retreat and try to exit back to Hacker Town. You can't, but you can return
and Jane will give you the ID back.

3N 4E 4S 3W 2S E* 2S to Hacker Town. S* 3W N E. Talk to Takashi and kill him.
NOTE--an alternate way through is just to get killed in Hacker Town, and you
are sent to the Rebirth area. Then S* E= N*-1 E and you fight him.

Takashi's death means the guardian is now gone from the Slums, so S 3E N* 3W
2N W 3N 2W 2N E 2N 4W 4N 2W 2N to the Ghost Town. You should be regenerating
EP by now, too, which is handy for using the chainsaw. Or for healing in a
pinch.

Once you get everything back, you can buy ID I and ID J at the digital shop.
It may take time to build up gold if you got killed, so if you want to go
back to Vegas and beat up the guitar guy, that's a good way. But even better-
-if you can make it to the top of the slums, there's another guitar guy
there. After you visit Weapon Town. That leaves you less likely to get
killed.

Level 17 is a good goal since experience needed for the next level is flat.
18 rises to 4000, then 19-21 are 6000. However, experience will soon become
easier to get.

Now you can and should go west to Weapon Town, to get some new stuff before
the ghost maze. W* S* W* 6S 2E.

At 6,5 the $5000 rifle is completely awesome (2 EP per use and the same
damage as the $3000,) and at 8,1 a $4500 sword is quite good. You may want to
keep your non-magic sword in case you are low on EP, though you can sell the
chainsaw. It is trumped by your gun.

Now you can just build stats. When you're ready, buy defense and agility
superpills, along with five or so complete healers, then heal at the hotel
and go to Ghost Town. I recommend being level 21. You may have to defend
quite a few attacks.

   4-12. GHOST TOWN

You can't see what goes where, but the map is pretty simple, fortunately.
There's a fight at the end, but it's not too bad. Remember to heal up as you
go along, since EP is regenerated, and you'll have a few fights. The maze
isn't bad, either, since you can mostly run into walls to get through. Purple
cows are also rather good experience--300 a pop--so it's not bad to run into
enemies at all.

N E* 2N W* 2N E* 2N 5W. A robot waitress is here. Talk to her. She gives you
an item. W* N* E* S* W* 2N E and heal up--walk back and forth to recover if
need be--and talk. Try to blow this guy away using agility, then defense,
then healers when necessary. If it fails, you can try again with more
experience/hit points/defense. Win and you're dumped in Weapon Town.

   4-13. WEAPON TOWN

W N* W S. Talk to the guy. W* S* W* 6S 2E. Say yes and you get a power bomb.
N 2E (stop for armor) 4S 3E N* E* N* E*. In the Slums, E* 4S 4E 2S W S 2W 3S
and get the transformer for 5000. 3N 2E 4S 3W 2S 2E S--before you leave, a
scientist will appear. Say (Y) to him and proceed.

In Hacker Town, stock up on 8 saucers and get a defense power up too.
Agility's nice but not necessary. Manta Ray doesn't allow much damage.

In Plant Area, the scientist appears again and gives you another puzzle
piece.

S E* S* through the wall, then W into the pipeline. Forward again.

   4-14. ENERGY

N* 2E S* and get the radar. N* 2W S 2W 2S W* N* W* S* E. S* and you'll
automatically kick the dead guy aside, getting boots. S* and kill the enemy
Manta Ray by using defense, agility and eight saucers. That's because one or
two may miss. Don't leave room in inventory for anything other than special
items.

Wait around and you'll get SOS1999 talking to you. Now retreat. 1E 1S and GET
from the laboratory. You may need to try several times. (Without this, Plum
won't appear in Human Town.)

Back to Weapon Town. 4W S and talk. N W* S* W* 6S 2E talk. Back to the Slums,
but instead of leaving, go W*. Use the card instead of going forward. Take
the bottom option. That is Human Town. Note that if you do not have boosts
for agility, attack and defense, it is worth a detour to the Medical Area for
supplies. That is stop #4 or #5, depending on if you're ahead of it or
behind.

   4-15. HUMAN

5W 2S 3E 2S 2W 2S E (N for armor, +15 +25 +?? +??) 2E S. This makes you very
hard to beat. After walking around a few squares you get a new Network Shop
Talk. ID's K and L. Buy them. Go back north but go west instead of east to
the pipeline. 2S 2W to the robot area.

Use the Transformer with the robot blocking the way. You'll get more online
talk. Go to the NW place and talk and return. Retreat to the humans'
pipeline. Take the 2nd-top blue option. N 5E 8S talk and retreat and take the
bottom option. Then go back to Plum, the girl in the SE.

   4-16. ROBOT

Now go W* N and W and to the NW corner. Talk to the robot and he will make a
new program. The screen will flash. More defense points.

Back to Human town and, via the Pipeline, Vegas (2rd-top blue then N 5E S*.)
Vegas will be red.

W* (talking to guy on the way, as well as getting the BBS messages,) S* E*,
S, the eyes, S* W N and talk to the doctor. S W N* W* S* E S and win the
fight. It's not hard, if you have attack, defense and agility power-ups. Talk
to Max.

eyes at 10,11
        5,11
        7, 8

Return to Plant Area office (N E* 3S E* N 2E 3S E* E*-1 N, 3rd bottom--or you
can use the pipeline, option 5) and TALK. You've got the final ID card.

   4-17. CENTRAL

     4-17-1. PHYSICAL

Not much to do here. Hook E* S* and rest in the hotel if you need to. Go up
the stairs to 10F. Win the fight, using power-ups to start. I did ok at level
24. You can beat up monsters for 250exp a pop here, and they're not too bad.

20F is trickier, as he casts sleep. 30F is actually easier.

40F looks blank. But you can use the FIGHT command and win that one. Once
you've done that, you may need to build up to level 30 to avoid unhappy
accidents, as the sleep spells you're hit with can be a bit of a pain. Also,
heal up and stock up on tools. Specifially, 2 EP's, and 2 of each power-up.
The last fight is the big one, and while it's nothing esoteric, the enemy can
cast sleep on you. You need to beat him twice before he dies.

Then run the Digitarize program (with the person) and you will be kicked to a
weird maze.

     4-17-2. CYBERSPACE

There are three mazes here--well, four, but the third is trivial. Monsters
are not tough here, but you can still be expedient. Run the Puji program (the
sun) to bust down the invisible blocks around you. This maze loops through
three pairs of doors and the fourth leads to the next area. W 7S W* 2S.

The next maze has teleports that kick you to the lower right--and there are
teleports above the bottom row. So don't get caught! N 3E N* E*. You can work
around enemies if you want--the top two rows are clear--but don't hoot to 2,1
3,5 7,8 c,7 a,c or 9,3. S* and you fight a pair of eyes before a one-way
exit. Good place to use the power-ups.

The next maze is Harmony Town without exits. Use Puji again. It's the only
way out.

The final maze is rather easy really once you realize there are secret doors.
S 2W 2S W* 5S 2E 3N 3E 3S. The eyes will attack. Buff up right away, then
heal when you get low. When the face appears, use the shield program. Then
keep firing. You will win.

 6. VERSIONS/CREDITS

1.0.0: sent to HonestGamers/GameFAQs with walkthrough completed, 01/24/2010

Thanks to odino for recommending this game.
Thanks to http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/1377/ for telling what some of
the items do.
Thanks very much to Espiga for further translations.
Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog,
Lagoona, Da Hui, StarFighters76 and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in
his current not-yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his
gang, but I want him to be part of mine.
All you people at honestgamers, YELL AT ME if I forgot you and you deserve to
be in there. I mean, it's partially because of HGWars and, well, the whole
community, that I got re-interested in writing weird old FAQs, and I want to
add to this in the future.
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/1377/04/fc2/sbrain_index.html has an HTML
style walkthrough, if you know Japanese. Without it and Espiga I'd be kaput.

??later on dyings not the worst thing to happen to you so if you do, no
problem--1/2 gold not too bad
