SD Gundam World 5: Battle of Universal Century is the last of this series of
strategy games on the Famicom. It is a bit more simplified than the previous
installments, in that pretty much everything is menu-driven and otherwise
automated. It is fun, but tedious at the same time, since you have to do a
LOT of flipping around in the menus to make any significant progress. I would
consider this to be a strategy simulator more than anything. Even still, if
you enjoyed the previous SD Gundam World strategy games, you should probably
give this one a shot as well.

Starting Off
============

On the title screen, you will be able to start a new game (スタート),
continue a previously saved game (カンティニュー), or view the Options screen
(オプション). You will then go to a screen where you can pick the type of
scenario you want to play on. You can choose a Free Scenario (フリーシナリオ)
which basically means you can tweak ALL of the game settings, and the game
ends when you are the last team standing.

The remaining options are the 10 pre-set scenarios. Each scenario will list
how many teams are playable in it, as well as the ending year/month for that
scenario. After you pick a scenario, you will go to a game settings screen.

You can choose what group you are a part of, if any (you can set it to blank,
which cancels that player entirely), if each side is controlled by a human
player or a computer, how much money you start the game with (the maximum is
999,000), the percentage of handicap (higher percentages move the battles in
your favor), the skills (affects the production of new units), what type of
units you will make (or all types), and how many soldiers you want at the
start of the game (maximum is 4).

When you are ready, press Start to begin the game.

Gameplay
========

When the game begins, you will take turns controlling your individual units.
You can produce new units, move to neighboring locations, bolster the defense
of locations already occupied by your units, and occupy new territories.
There are a total of 21 areas that you can take over; 13 on the main map and
eight on Earth. On the map screens, the small colored marks next to the area
name determines how many of a given team's units are sitting there currently.

When on the map screen, you can press A to bring up your main menu screen.
All events in this game are menu-driven, and even the battles are done
automatically (it's purely statistic-based). That main menu is as follows:

   Command (コマンド): Access action commands available at a given location
   Earth/Space (ちきゅう / うちゅう): Switch between Earth/Space map screens
   View (いちらん): View various information about the teams
   Other Options (そのほか): Access second set of menu options

   Development (かいはつ): Allocate money to gain access to new units for
                           development (you pay a premium to gain the
                           ability to create that type of unit)
   Change (こうたい): End your turn
   File (ファイル): Save your current game or load a different game
   Settings (せってい): Change various settings in-game

If you select the Command option, you will go to a screen which will give you
some information about the currently selected location. You can see who has
what currently stationed at that location, the current defense rating, and
the amount of money you will earn each turn if you occupy that location. If
you occupy that location, you can bolster its defenses (ぼうえい) for a small
fee. You can also change your unit data by selecting Force (ぶたい).

On the Force menu, you will first have to pick a unit group that you have
currently occupying that location. To find this, look at the right side of
the screen; if you have any forces there, a numbered orb will be in one of
the spaces (1-4) in your team's color. After you select one of those, you
will have a variety of options available to you, as shown below:

   Movement (いどう): Move this grouping to a neighboring location that you
                      occupy
   Production (せいさん): View that group's composition, and produce new
                          units for it
   Assignment (はいぞく): Assign a different pilot to the current group
   Repair (しゅうり): Repair your group if it is damaged

In order to travel to a location that you do not occupy, or is unoccupied,
you must have an active force of units available in your group. There are
four types of units you can make, with various models in each group (use the
A button and Control Pad to select a group, then the amount, money permitting
of course). When you are ready to buy your selected units, choose the Decide
option (けってい). You need to have the Mass Production Gundam units in your
group in order to enter battle, either against a location's defenses, or
against another occupying team's units.

To take over a location, you must deplete its defenses. This is why it is
very important to bolster your occupied locations' defenses when enemy units
are near; the cost is worth it. If you enter into battle, you can either
watch the battle itself unfold (by changing the first option on the title
screen's Options menu), or automatically choose an option and watch the
results appear immediately. Again, the results are purely based on statistics
and the current status of the units in that particular group.

The objective of the game is to occupy all of the locations on both maps. On
Earth, there are 8 cities that can be occupied, and 13 locations in Space.
The same objective is valid for the regular scenarios, though you can win if
you have the most occupied locations at the end of the final month. After the
game is complete, you go back to the title screen and select another one if
you desire.
