1. Overview
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roundball 2 on 2 Challenge is a highly detailed 2 on 2 basketball game for the
Nintendo Entertainment System. While the game didn't feature the NBA license it
did offer a great game of 2 on 2 with the ability to have each of the 4 players
controlled by a person; a rarity for the NES. Games are played on a half court
and feature all the moves you would expect from a modern basketball game in
this classic. This guide will go over all the features, options, mechanics and
stats for Roundball; it'll be a quick little guide to help any fans there maybe
out there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Game Options
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before playing a game of 2 on 2 you have to set the options for the match. They
are as follows...
Team Size
~~~~~~~~~
1 on 1: each team will only have one player. Both can be human or one can be
the computer.
2 on 2: each team will have two players. Teams can consist of two humans versus
two computer controlled players or one human player on each team.
Players
~~~~~~~
Select how many human players will be playing from one to four. To play more
then two human players on the NES you will need the NES Fourscore of which
there is two types; a wired multitap and a wireless one. Good luck finding one.
Teammates
~~~~~~~~~
This lets you pick if the other human player is on your team or the
opposing team. This is only for if two players are selected for play.
Mode
~~~~
Exhibition: starts a quick, single game. Up to four players can play; with two
on each team of course.
Tournament: Starts or resumes a tournament. Resuming a tournament requires a
password. A new tournament starts with four teams of which everyone picks one
and it's round robin from there. After each round a password is given to you so
you can pick up where you left off later.
Steals
~~~~~~
Sets the difficulty of the ability to steal from the other team. Pick between
easy, medium and hard. To be honest I never noticed stealing to be any easier
or harder on any of the settings but rather the amount of times the computer
attempts so steal from you.
Time
~~~~
Sets the time of the next game. Select from four, eight, twelve or sixteen
minutes.
Outs
~~~~
Select who takes it out in the next round. Winners or losers of the former
round. Outs being that team gets the ball first.
Control
~~~~~~~
Primary: the ability to switch between both of your teams players if you are
playing with a computer team mate. If you have a human team mate this option
is not available.
Same Guy: locks your control on a single player. This is mandatory if you have
two human players on one team but you can use it if you want to with a computer
controlled teammate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Controls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Offense
~~~~~~~
D-Pad: controls the currently selected player.
Start: Pauses the game; can use Select to change BGM from there.
Select: n/a
A: Shoots the ball.
B: Pass to teammate.
Defense
~~~~~~~
D-Pad: controls the currently selected player.
Start: Pauses the game; can use Select to change BGM from there.
Select: n/a
A: Steal and shot block under hoop.
B: Select the other player if he is Computer controlled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4. Player Stats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roundball 2 on 2 Challenge offers 24 unique players to pick from. They're all
black so if that bothers you then go shoot yourself. Each human player can pick
who he wants to be and in an exhibition game any human player can pick the
players for the computer controlled team.
Stats correlate to how well the player performs when you are using him and when
the computer is using him. Like real life some players are better at certain
aspects then others so pick your teammates carefully.
5. Tips, Rules, Cheats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rules and Regs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three Second Violation: "Three in the Key"; you have to leave the key or shoot
the ball within three seconds of entering the key.
Traveling: more then two steps with out a dribble; for this game it means
taking a shot without letting the ball go. Hence a jump.
Out of bounds: leaving the half-court with the ball. Last person to touch the
ball on it's way out is in the wrong.
Personal Foul: includes reach in when you try to steal. These are pretty much
random; the higher the PF the less likely one is to occur for that player.
Tips
~~~~
Shooting: the key to shooting is proper release on the jump; just like in the
real sport. Generally speaking the farther you are from the hoop when you shoot
the ball the higher the jump needs to be before the release. Dunking is done
while moving towards and under the hoop; same for lay-ups but they also require
good release. Don't hit the groud with the ball or you'll get hit with a foul
for traveling. Shooting outside the three line of course results in 3 points.
Blocking: you must be in front of a shooting player to block. Match your jump
to his jump while shooting and a block might acquire.
Stealing: done while moving towards the inside of the current player with the
ball. Time your steal with the movement of the dribble for a succesful dribble.
Passing: done automatically with the press of the button. Can be intercepted
by another player by crossing in the balls path.
Miss.
~~~~~
The game is pretty easy to get the hang of. As fas as other hints I'd suggest
going with a balanced set of players whose stats are all close to the median.
Try not to double up on a stat as there are only two players you don't really
need both to me real good in a similar stat.
Shooting can be a little tricky but as always timing is the key. I would
suggest not spending a lot of wasted time on three point shots unless you are
down a lot or up a lot. They are tricky to land and if missed result in the
other team getting the ball while you are farther away from the hoop to protect
from the shot.
Steal, steal, STEAL. I can't say this enough. Personal fouls occur so rarely
that you owe it to yourself to lay into the steal button as much as humanly
possible. More time you control the ball equals more time shooting.
Blocking is another skill that is good to master(DUH!). Like shooting it is
based on timing a lot.
PRACTICE, seriously go into a one on one game to practice the basics and get
those shot times in key. Your game will thank you.
Final hint I can offer is to know the rules and don't fall in the traps. Don't
get caught in the key and never come back to earth with the rock.
Have Fun!
~~~~~~
Not many cheats for this game but they can be found on GameFAQ's com. I'll list
