What is Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure?

Why, only the greatest side-scrolling platformer the world never played! When
players think back on classic NES platformers, rarely does poor Puss N Boots
come to mind. But why!

Well, as it turns out, Puss N Boots isn't REALLY that great. However, this
game is a classic example of an outrageously simple kid's games that offers
not only a good time for the younger set, but also a short, stress-free romp
for players of any age. The graphics are crap, the music is forgettable, and
the story is non-existent for anyone without a manual (or this FAQ), but the
controls are tight, and the entire experience is fun for the 15 minutes that
it lasts. You can throw this cart in your NES and beat it in less time than
it takes to sit through all the previews at a movie theater. Now THAT'S some
classic gameplay!

Can you even imagine how ripped off you would have felt if you spent over $50
on this thing back in 1988? Thankfully, we live in time where most NES titles
cost less than ten dollars, and we can appreciate the simple pleasures that
Puss N Boots offers. Now it's time to take a trip down memory lane and beat
this sucker one last time!

[2] STORY                                                               G0200
=============================================================================

Count Gruemon, a notorious swine, hated mice with a passion. One day, he
discovered a mouse in his castle. Frustrated and irate, Count Gruemon ordered
Puss N Boots (Pero) to find and destroy the mouse.

However, Pero was a kind-hearted cat, who had become friends with the mouse,
and so, he helped the little creature to escape. In a fit of anger, Count
Gruemon, aided by Dr. Gari-gari, a fiendish scientist wolf, sent Pero on a
perilous time-travel journey around the world and into the past.

Now, Pero must locate and defeat Count Gruemon and the mad Dr. Gari-gari,
and use their Time Machine to get home - or be stuck in the past forever. To
make matters worse, the Cat Kingdom has sent Killers after Pero because he
helped a mouse and thereby violated Cat Kingdom Law (no, seriously). Pero
must travel to exotic lands and overcome many hazards, but can he defeat the
combined might of the diabolical Count Gruemon, Dr. Gari-gari, and the
Killers? Time to find out!

[3] HOW TO PLAY                                                         G0300
=============================================================================

This section provides an overview of the game for first-time players. Anyone
looking for basic help should read this section before the Walkthrough.

BASICS                      G0301
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

STARTING THE GAME
At the main title screen, press START on the control pad. The world map will
appear with different stages scattered all around. Press A to enter the first
stage and begin playing the game. After completing a stage, you will return
to the world map. Press A again to enter the next stage.

OBJECT OF THE GAME
The object of Puss N Boots is to guide Pero to the end of each stage without
losing any lives or continues. In addition to the stages, there are multiple
bosses that must be defeated in order to complete the game. Defeated enemies
and items earn points that accumulate toward your total score.

LIVES AND CONTINUES
Pero starts the game with 3 lives. When Pero loses a life, the game restarts
from the the last checkpoint in the current level. When all of Pero's lives
are gone, the GAME OVER screen will appear. Press A to return to the main
title screen. To continue playing where you left off when you ran out of
lives, press SELECT to move the cursor down to Continue and then press START.
You have three continues available. If you use all three continues, you will
be forced to start at the first level, no matter which option you choose at
the title screen.

POINTS
When Pero defeats an enemy or collects an item, he earns points. The total
number of points earned is shown in the lower left-hand corner of the game
screen (under the number of remaining lives). The score has no affect on the
outcome of your game. Your highest total score is shown in the lower right-
hand corner of the screen (under the Damage Meter). High scores are NOT saved
after the NES has been turned off.

WEAPONS                     G0304
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

PISTOL
Pero's default weapon. Since the pistol shoots straight, you can depend upon
it for accuracy. A good all-around weapon that works well in most situations.

BOMBS
Bombs are good for rapid shooting and causing greater damage than the Pistol
or Boomerang. However, the curve causes it to have short, awkward range.

BOOMERANG
The Boomerang curves up after being thrown. You cannot throw more than one at
a time, which leaves you defenseless while you wait for it to return.

MISSILE
The Missile is the only weapon available in the car, ship, or balloon. It has
a very slow rate of fire, but it can be shot forward, backward, and upward.

MACHINE GUN
The Machine Gun is the only weapon available while flying the airplane. It
can only be fired forward.

TORPEDO
The Torpedo is the only weapon available in the submarine. It can be used to
destroy underwater mountains. It also fires forward and backward.

ITEMS                       G0305
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

MONEY POUCH (1000-3000 points)         BOOT (500 points)
Earns Pero big points.                 Makes Pero temporarily invincible.

HAMBURGER (500 points)                 PERO MARK (100 points)
Restores all of Pero's energy.         Gives Pero an extra life.

=============================================================================
[4] WALKTHROUGH                                                         G0400
=============================================================================

At the main title screen, press START on the control pad. The world map will
appear with different stages scattered all around. Press A to enter the first
stage and begin playing the game.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
THE WEST                    G0401
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Move right and avoid (or shoot) the barrels and wheels that roll at you. Pick
up the MONEY POUCH, then continue right and dodge the horseshoes. Destroy the
short cat that comes from behind and a few bouncing balls. A PERO MARK is
sitting on a window ledge soon after, but it disappears quickly. Dodge the
falling horseshoes, then grab the PERO MARK and MONEY POUCH sitting on the
ledges. Watch out for the tall cats that jump at you, grab the MONEY POUCH,
then continue running right while dodging more cats and horseshoes until you
reach the end of the stage.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
THE OCEAN                   G0402
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

After jumping in the ship, head right and avoid the falling lightning (most
of it can be missed simply by holding right). Once you're past the lighting,
pirate ships will start coming toward you. Three shots on each ship will
destroy them. Next, kill the sharks that come from both directions at varying
speeds, then the pirate ships. Continue right and dodge the lightning that
falls until you hit land.

The next part of the level is in a submarine. The underwater mountains can be
destroyed by your missiles. Move right and kill the fish that come from the
ground. Blast your way through the mountain that blocks your path. On the
other side is a seaflower that you can either pilot over or destroy when it
pops up. Grab the MONEY POUCH and approach the next mountain. Inside it, near
the bottom, pick up the HAMBURGER, then continue to blast your way out. Kill
the jellyfish that swims at you and grab the next MONEY POUCH. Avoid the fish
that comes from behind, then take the BOOT and continue right. Destroy the
last two fish and take the path leading off-screen.

The boss at the end of this stage is a mechanical frog. Press start and
switch to bombs, then get up close to the boss without touching it. When it
opens its mouth to shoot out little frogs, start jumping up and firing bombs
inside. Avoid the small frogs and keep blasting away inside the boss's mouth
until it's finished.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
ARABIA                      G0403
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Once you're inside the car, drive right and alternate between jumping and
firing at the birds. The mole machine can be killed or avoided by jumping on
top of the buildings. Pick up the PERO MARK on top of the two-story building
and continue right. Avoid the bouncing balls and snag the BOOT on the next
tall building. A giant bird flies in, drops something, and swoops down to
attack; avoid it and continue on to hop over the water geysers. Kill the
small birds in the air and keep jumping the geysers until you reach the end
of the stage.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
SPACE WARS                  G0404
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

The plane you fly in this stage is automatically moving right at all times,
so all you need to do is dodge enemies and pick up items where you can. Kill
the birds flying around at the start and pick up the HAMBURGER near the top
of the screen. Avoid the giant bird that comes from behind in the middle of
the screen and grab the MONEY POUCH near the top again. Dodge the lightning
and destroy the helicopter, then pick up the PERO MARK in the same position
where the other items were. More lightning and birds strike from different
directions, so keep moving and firing. Finally, a UFO will come in and
release smaller UFOs for you to avoid. You can kill it or keep dodging the
small ships if it gets behind you until you finish the end of the stage.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
LONDON                      G0405
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Keep moving right and firing your pistol at the cats that come from the right
and left sides of the screen. You should be able to kill most of them before
they jump into you or fire any shots. Eventually, you'll reach a door that is
entered by standing in front of it and pressing up. Inside is a series of
conveyer belt platforms that move in different directions. If you stand on
the far sides of the platforms, Pero won't move and you can jump freely. Keep
moving right and killing at the cats while avoiding the objects that raise
and lower from the ceiling. Enter the door at the end of the room.

Move right until you reach the objects that raise and lower from the ground
and the ceiling. Stand right next to the first object on the ground and wait
until it lowers, then jump over it. Do the same for the next two objects and
enter the door. The next area is composed entirely of small platforms, some
of which flash when you land on them and fall away. Head right by jumping
from platform to platform while dodging the bats that come from the ceiling.
Jump to the last platform with the door and enter.

The boss in this stage is a sitting demon. Immediately run to the far right
side of the screen, where you will be out of reach of the boss's swinging
arm. From there, press start and switch to the boomerang. Facing the boss,
jump up and throw the boomerang at the top of your jump to hit it in the
head. Avoid the objects that come from the boss's mouth and continue to throw
the boomerang until the boss is defeated.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
LIBERTY                     G0406
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

This is a very short and simple stage, but if the balloon touches the bottom
of the screen, Pero will automatically die, so keep it raised as often as
possible. Avoid the lightning at the top of the screen, then go as high as
possible in the balloon to dodge the two pirate balloons. If they come from
the left side of the screen, you can drop behind and kill them easily. Next,
dodge the stars and, finally, the lightning while moving right to complete
the stage.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
NEW YORK                    G0407
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Enter the door and immediately jump on the platform above to avoid the fire.
Keep hopping upward until you reach the next door and enter. Move right and
kill the cats that come from both directions. Pass the first door and enter
the one at the far end of the room. Inside is another room consisting solely
of platforms and three doors. Jump to the top of the room and enter the
highest door on the right side of the screen. Go up again to the next door
(where you can see three other doors, but can't yet reach them). Now, you've
got two doors to choose from, so pick the one to the far left.

In this room, jump up to the platform below the two holes shooting flames.
The flames come out randomly, but wait until you see an opening, then jump up
to the platform in front of the first hole (not ABOVE the flames, but level
with them) and quickly jump to the next highest platform on your left. Keep
jumping to the top of the room and go through the door on the right side of
the screen.

The sub-boss in this stage is a flying snake. Press start and switch to
bombs, then blast the boss's head while avoiding the things it drops. When it
swerves toward you, jump over the head and continue firing until it's dead.
Enter the door on the right side of the screen. In the next room, there are
multiple holes in the ceiling that shoot flames downward. Wait until you see
an opening, then run right to avoid being hit.

The final boss actually consists of two separate enemies; Count Gruemon and
Dr. Gari-gari. Gruemon is the pink pig that appears to be split in two, and
Gari-gari is the gray cat. Once the battle begins, immediately run to the
right side of the screen while carefully avoiding their shots. If you touch
Gruemon, you won't be damaged, so stay over there and continuously fire your
pistol at Gari-gari until he's dead. Once he's gone, Gruemon will transform
into one solid target, so just stay to the side of the screen and fire away
at him while doing your best to avoid his shots. When Gruemon is defeated, a
door will appear. Enter the door to finish the game.
