I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES
FAQ completion Project of 2004-2005, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board.
We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo
Entertainment System!  Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision,
Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or
any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true
gaming is at!

Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce.  I miss you, and I hope you are living
it up in the afterlife as you did in this world.  You will always be in my
memories, and you will never be forgotten.

1) Poker (also called Poker 5-in-1) is a fun little cart from Sachen, a
  somewhat prominent game designer for the Famicom system back when it was
  really in it's golden age.  Through the wonder of pirated carts that made
  their way to North America, I became exposed to this game, with it's
  multiple offerings of Poker.  What does it offer exactly?  Well, it has
  the following poker titles:

-King Poker (a strip poker variant based on how many total winnings that are
achieved)

-Poker (First Card is covered, bets made on face up cards, played with full
or partial deck settings)

-Black Jack (the old game of 21, though it is not a Poker game)

-The 13 Cards (Commonly referred to as Chinese Poker, build three hands and
rake in the overall positive scores)

  Although some of the variants involved may seem strange, they are
  actually quite fun to play, though King Poker is something designed more
  for the adult than the child!  Good luck!

2) This section will examine the game of King Poker (also known as a Strip
  Poker Simulator), looking at Objective, Controls, Rules, and Strategies.

                             o-----------o
                             | Objective |
                             o-----------o

The Objective is to match up certain winning hand combinations for points,
totalling them up to reach the milestone spots listed, which will cause the
lady in the strip poker gambit to remove another piece of clothing.

                                o-------o

 i) The game determines the payout based on the Poker Hand achieved.
    Although the payout are small on the first opponent, with each new
    opponent the payouts for the same poker hand will have increased over
    the previous total.

ii) With each paying hand, the minimum amount of cash returned to the
    betting pool will be what was put in, but for every payout in points
    that is larger, the payout to the betting pool is larger as well.

iii) Each opponent has four "Levels" to achieve, bypassing the point total
    for each by getting winning hands.  At each Level, the opponent will
    remove another piece of clothing, with the fourth level being the naked
    Level.

iv) After defeating (and de-robing) an opponent, a new opponent shall
    replace the defeated vixen.

                              o------------o
                              | Strategies |
                              o------------o

 i) Bet the maximum bet ($500).  Although this sounds crazy, typically the
    game will yield at least one set of two pair every three turns, meaning
    that it will be rare when all three attempts will fail.  Remember,
    every time a winning payout occurs, the minimum payment made to the
    betting pool will be the same as the amount bet in the first place,
    which is recommended to be... $500!

ii) When it comes time to hold some cards and discard others, you will need
    to see what you have.  Typically, the best you get after the deal is a
    pair, so you can either just hold the pair, or hold the pair and a
    random card.  Although the first option gets an extra brand new card,
    it is not likely to be a new pair, where as holding a random card will
    increase the number of cards that can be hit for a pair or three of a
    kind.  Both have risks and rewards, so decide which you think is best
    for your chances (me?  I prefer the hold the pair and a random card
    myself).

iii) Now what if you just have five different cards?  Well, typically
    holding one random card seems to work best, as it opens the chance of
    pulling a match for it, leaving the remaining three to drop a pair.  It
    is a long shot to be sure, but at the High Card stage off the deal,
    your chances are abysmal anyway.

iv) When it comes to a possible straight or a flush, it is only recommended
    to actively pursue one when you have four of the five needed cards (in
    the case of the straight, preferably the four you have are sequential
    with either end being possible to hit upon to get it).  If you try from
    just three base cards on the attempt, it is near impossible to ever get
    that lucky, and it really does not leave enough incoming new cards for
    the chance of two pair or a three of a kind occurring.

 v) When you get the rarity of a sweet hand off the deal, do not get over
    anxious.  I know it is tempting to start celebrating, but if you break
    your concentration, you might accidentally call for new cards without
    properly marking the ones you want gone, or you can do what I have done
    and mark cards that are actually the ones you wish to hold!

ii) The process above will occur up to three more times, ending with the
    hands being revealed and the money in the pot being distributed to the
    winner.

iii) In the unlikely event of a tie, the money will be split and half given
    to both parties.

                        o----------------------o
                        | Poker Hand Hierarchy |
                        o----------------------o

High Card========> Five different non-sequential, at least two different
                  suits, and no repeated cards.  Usually not a good hand to
                  bet large amounts on, but risk it if you feel lucky.

One Pair=========> Having two cards the same, and three other different
                  cards.  These are fairly common, so you or your opponent
                  can get these often.

Two Pair=========> Having two cards the same, as well as another two the
                  same, but different from the first pair.  Also, a fifth
                  card that is different from the rest.  A solid hand to
                  start betting a large amount of money to drain your
                  opponent, but be wary of betting too much.

Three of a Kind==> Having three cards the same, with two other different
                  cards.  A very good chance of winning the hand with this,
                  but there are better combos to consider.

Straight=========> Having five sequential cards, that are made up of more
                  than one suit.  Another solid hand to bet large amounts
                  of money on.

Flush============> Five non-sequential cards, all of the same suit.  Hard to
                  get, but will win hands more often than not.

Full House=======> having three of a kind and a pair at the same time.  Bet
                  lots of money because this one is very hard to lose on.

Four of a Kind===> Having all four of a card, and one other different card.
                  When you enter this range of good cards, rarely will you
                  see a better hand.  This is a 98% of the time winner.

Straight Flush===> Five sequential same suited cards.  Even better chances
                  of winning, so let us say a 99% of the time winner.  Only
                  time these rules do not make a straight flush is when the
                  hand is a...

Royal Flush======> This near impossible hand to get is when the five
                  sequential same suit cards are: Ten, Jack, Queen, King,
                  Ace.  This hand is a guaranteed winner (except if someone
                  else has a royal flush themselves).  I have seen three of
                  these myself; twice in this game, and once in real life.

                              o------------o
                              | Strategies |
                              o------------o

 i) In 2~A Paper mode, it is far tougher to get better hands, due to the
    larger amount of cards in play, as opposed to 9~A Paper mode, where
    only the 9 cards and upwards will be in play.  This means that any
    level of the Poker Hand Hierarchy is more valuable in the 2~A Paper
    mode as opposed to the 9~A Paper mode, but the higher into the
    Hierarchy the Poker Hand is, the less difference in true value between
    the two types actually exist.

ii) When your opponent is showing some decent cards while yours are not so
    good, it is often better to fold early, rather than hoping for a lucky
    draw.  This is easiest to determine when they have a high pair up (or
    even two face cards/Aces) while you have something less useful, it is
    better to minimize losses, as opposed to taking a big hit after three
    more rounds of betting.

iii) Sometimes it is better to try and underbet your opponent, lulling them
    into thinking that your card in hand is not really that good.  However,
    if you have something good, it is sometimes better to bet heavy,
    scaring them off quickly, as one lucky card can change their fortunes,
    putting you into a bad spot instead!

                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                           ~~~ Card Values ~~~
                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2 through 9.: The small cards of the deck are worth exactly what number is
             printed upon the card.  So, if you have a six, it is worth 6
             towards the count of the hand.
10 through K: The range of face cards and the ten are worth the exact same
             total toward your hand, garnering a respectable 10.
A...........: The Ace stands alone, with the unique ability to count as 11
             towards your hand when enough space remains under 21 to do so,
             but if that space does not exist, the Ace will count as 1.
             Also, if the Ace initially counts as 11, but a new card puts
             the total over 21, then the Ace will become a single point to
             stop the hand from busting (going over 21).
                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                           ~~~ Dealer Rules ~~~
                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A dealer must stop hitting when they have 17 or higher.  This also means
that they can not stop short of 17 either (16 or less for the dealer means
they must hit until they are 17 or higher).  So, you can use this to your
advantage by judging the strength of your own hand against what card is
showing for the dealer.

                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                             ~~~ Tie Hand ~~~
                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If there is a tie, no winner is awarded, and you get your money back.  This
is called a "Push".
                              o------------o
                              | Strategies |
                              o------------o
 i) You can not go over 21, so you must decide what number you will stop
    hitting (getting more cards) on.  The general rule is to HIT until 14,
    then a player must decide how lucky they feel, what they think their
    opponent is holding (tying into the rule above), and what cards are
    gone (count what cards are gone since they only shuffle every so
    often).
ii) Try to figure out if the Computer is likely to bust or not when faced
    with a tough number to hit upon (ie 14-16).  If they have a 4-6 turned
    up off the deal, they are going to have take at least one more card, so
    they could be in an ideal busting situation if they have a 10 value
    card face down already.  However, this is not a 100% strategy, so
    sometimes it is best to trust instincts... unless you have been
    counting cards to determine your chances.
iii) If the computer has a high card (particularly an Ace) face up, it is
    likely the score of that hand will be fairly good (more often than
    not).  This usually makes it easier to determine to hit on a tough to
    make a call on number (ie 14-16 range), but again it is not an absolute
    in decisions, so unless you are counting cards, it comes down to
    instinct and guess work.
                                | Rules |
                                o-------o
Each player must divide their 13 cards into a "Back" hand of 5 cards, a
"Middle" hand of 5 cards and a "Front" hand of 3 cards.  Considered as poker
hands, the Back hand must be better than the Middle hand, and the Middle
hand must be better than the Front hand.  The standard poker ranking is
used, so the hand types from high to low are:
-royal flush (10 through Ace of one suit)
-straight flush (5 sequential cards of one suit)
-four of a kind (four of the same type of card)
-full house (three of the same type of card and two of the same type of card)
-flush (five non-sequential cards of one suit)
-straight (five sequential cards of at least two suits)
-three of a kind (three of the same type of card)
-two pairs (two sets of two of the same cards)
-one pair (two of the same cards)
-high card (five non-sequential different card types of at least two suits)
After arranging the three hands, press START to enter into the Showdown
portion of the game, where the hands are compared and the scoring is
determined.
                            o---------------o
                            | Basic Scoring |
                            o---------------o
Each scoring point is determined simply as a +1 or a -1, comparing each hand
versus the other.  For example:
Front Hand Scoring:
North: beats South, loses to East and West  (-1+1-1 = -1)
South: beats East, loses to North and West  (-1+1-1 = -1)
East : beats North and West, loses to South (-1+1+1 = +1)
West : beats South and North, loses to East (-1+1+1 = +1)
Middle Hand Scoring:
North: beats South and West and East        (+1+1+1 = +3)
South: beats East, loses to North and West  (-1-1+1 = -1)
East : loses to South and West and East     (-1-1-1 = -3)
West : Beats South and East, loses to North (-1+1+1 = +1)
Back Hand Scoring:
North: loses to South and West and East     (-1-1-1 = -3)
South: beats North and West and East        (+1+1+1 = +3)
East : beats West and North, loses to South (-1+1+1 = +1)
West : beats North, loses to South and East (-1-1+1 = -1)
This leads into totaling up the end result of the entire Showdown:
                    ______ ______ ______ ______ ______
                   |\     |      |      |      |      |
                   | \___ |North |South | East | West |
                   |     \|      |      |      |      |
                   |______\______|______|______|______|
                   |North |XXXXXX|  +1  |  -1  |  -1  |
                   |______|______|______|______|______|
                   |South |  -1  |XXXXXX|  +3  |  -1  |
                   |______|______|______|______|______|
                   | East |  +1  |  -3  |XXXXXX|  +1  |
                   |______|______|______|______|______|
                   | West |  +1  |  +1  |  -1  |XXXXXX|
                   |______|______|______|______|______|
The individual number for one player versus another indicates the pay they
will have to make/receive to that other player.  Total the three digits up
for one player to determine if they came out up or down on the hand.
                            o---------------o
                            | Bonus Scoring |
                            o---------------o
However, the payment of bet increments is not just in head to head totaling
all the time, as certain conditions when met will increase the yield of the
collection/payment.
 i) If you win the Front hand with three of a kind, you receive 3 units
    instead of 1 for that hand.
ii) If you win the Middle hand with a full house, you receive 2 units
    instead of 1 for that hand.
iii) If you win the Back (or Middle) hand with 4 of a kind, you receive 4
    units instead of 1.
iv) If you win the Back (or Middle) hand with a royal flush or straight
    flush you win 5 units instead of 1.
                              o------------o
                              | Strategies |
                              o------------o
 i) Typically, it is the goal of every hand to get the best possible hands
    in order, with strong hands the whole way through the three hands.
    However, sometimes the overall quality of the hand will not be very
    strong, so it may be best to purposely under feed the Front hand and
    instead fortify the Middle hand, making fro two strong hands and a
    throwaway hand.  This is alternately used to gain a Bonus Scoring
    chance by weakening the other areas of the set of hands to make one
    area really strong (for instance, with 3 three of a kinds available,
    split them into the three hands, likely winning the Front Hand and
    gaining Bonus Scoring for getting that three of a Kind in the Front
    hand).
ii) When trying to get three strong hands, make sure to always heavy end
    stack the top portion of a mixed hand (two pairs or a full house).  Say
    that a full house exists (3 Nines and 2 Eights) along with two pair
    (2 Fours and 2 Threes), the Two Pair could be strengthened by switching
    the Eights with the Threes, which does not weaken the Full House due to
    no one else being able to tie 3 Nines (only four of them in the deck,
    so not enough to match it).
iii) Another thing to consider is a Flush's value versus breaking it up.
    Deciding on how and when to break a Flush up to make other hands
    depends largely upon what quality of hands that can be created instead,
    weighing it against where those levels of quality hands will be
    positioned.  As a fairly accurate indicator, the following hand position
    will require around the following (usually) to win some points:
    -Front Hand can be won by High Card, but try for a Pair
    -Middle Hand can go as high as a Full House, but usually a three of a
     kind, maybe a straight
    -Back Hand can be won by a Flush, but is most frequently a Full House.
The following is based off of the game's story, but with the language and
punctuation cleaned up to flow better.
*Mr. Mayor approaches you, speaking in a jovial tone*
Welcome to the Casino!  This town is famous for gambling.  In our city
everybody loves gambling rather than his life.  Therefore, everywhere you
go, people are playing varied bizarre games, and they will sincerely invite
you to join their party.  Of course, you have the right to decide whether
you want to play with them or not.  Perhaps there are a few frauds among
this party, be careful when they are cheating.  However, most of them are
honest, especially when you play in the formal casino, because they run
legal games within their casinos.
Here is a dice, which you can use to decide the next stop you can make.  Ok!
Please bring your cash ($5,000 USD) and be ready to start your nervous,
exciting gambling journey.  According to our customs we will wish you good
luck and good fortune to become a millionaire!
Since you have arrived at a gated path, Casino Rascal will decide your fate
through a game of chance.  You will need to choose whether the card he holds
is above or below 7.  The following outcomes are what can occur from this
scenario:
 i) If you have picked correctly, you pass through without incident.
ii) If you have picked incorrectly, you must surrender half of your
    earnings.
iii) If the card was a seven, then you will win automatically, regardless of
    which option you selected.
just created.  If your card turns out a BINGO (three in a row on either a
horizontal, vertical, and diagonal), then you will be rewarded with some
                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When you meet the fine old fellow who welcomed you to this gambling haven,
he will ask you to put up $500 for the purposes of gambling (sounds like any
other typical politician... but at least he is up front about his vices I
suppose).  Anyhow, select a card from the two presented, hoping you take the
higher ranked card, as that will net you a cool $1000, though I shudder to
think from what public works program the Mayor dug the money out of for
payment!

choose from.  Depending on which box he selects, he can be the lucky (or
unlucky recipient) of the following denominations of money: $0, $500, $1000,
or $5000.  As you can see, it is a fairly reliable way to make money, or at
least break even!

                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the end of the road for the journeying... well, really more of a
turnaround spot.  If it is landed on directly, the following stats will be
gained:
 i) 5 Hit Points
ii) 5 Experience Points
iii) 5 Luck
iv) 100 Gold
This is followed up by sending of the hero backwards a random amount of
steps.
