01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Meiji Ishin' for the NES, released by USE in 1989. The game is
based on the historical events of the Meiji Restoration which you should
probably read up on before attempting to dive into the game, and although most
of us never hear about that in history class it is actually one of those
world-changing events that brought Japan to power before WWII.
Either way, the game is very Japanese and also features heavily Japanese in
both hiragana and some kanji. Not understanding Japanese makes the game
difficult to play and a little pointless to play too since the story is what
matters most.
There are two parts this game. The first part is an adventure to gather your
entourage, hold secret meetings and defeat the evil boss. The second part is
attacking Edo (former name of Tokyo) to end the shogun rule once and for all.
The adventure part also features heavy fighting thus it is not a pure text
adventure, although it looks like one at first.
Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!

02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
Display:
````````
For the adventure part you have a basic display. At locations you have a
screen with the person you talk to (or nobody) and the menu on the right. At
the bottom you see the conversation text or prompt to take action. When you
are out on the travel path you have an almost similar view but you are always
facing the back of your group.
The strategy part shows a map of Japan with the areas during that time period.
The menu at the bottom allows you to issue orders and a menu will pop up with
order options.
Finally, the field battle has your troops on a square grid and a menu of
commands at the bottom. In-between these you have a set of stats ranging from
troops to the current round.
Controls:
Soon you will have someone tap on your shoulder. You have to turn around else
This starts fight training (you did not have any chance to enter random battles
anyway). The top left icon (命) is your life whereas the second character (力)
is your attack power. I know it is really weak right now but you are not trying
to kill the master and against his stats you hardly stand a chance anyway. The
controls also seem weird and forget about the two circles for now, in this
training you want to focus on the little dots that appear on the master. If
there is a green dot quickly press the direction it appears (his face is up,
his chest is down and so on) along with the B button. If done correctly you
will defend and get the appropriate approval message from the master. The other
part is attacking. You cannot hurt the master, but you can at least try and get
an approval if done correctly. When a red dot pops up quickly hold the
direction and press the A button instead. His neck is not pressing any
direction by the way. After attacking enough times and before you run out of
health points the master will stop the fight and congratulate you. If your
health runs out you have to redo the exercise. Afterwards you are Nanakyu, the
7th grade.
You will encounter your first battle on the journey. Choose to go forward as
usual but this time fight as you did in the training (you are top rank now
after all!). Now you also want to ensure the dots come into play. They reflect
how much power your attacks will “roll” when hit the correct timing. If you
get the direction and button right to attack but the power wheel shows 0 then
the enemy will parry. If you get a 1 or later 2 then you can cause damage.
Pretty much all people you will encounter in the future are probably hostile so
do not even bother proceeding, just fight or hide (described in the next
encounter). I have encountered 1 or 2 friendly faces but even if you hide they
would just walk by anyway and I think there is no disadvantage of hiding from
friendlies.
You should be tapped on the shoulder while on the way. Hide:
>かくれる
>Pick left, middle or right
You have a good chance to avoid the encounter. You can always fight if you want
but it’s tedious. There are more encounters on the path from now on.
If at any point you get tapped on the shoulder and turn around, a voice might
talk to you. Use the middle option to advance. Unless you are playing on an
emulator where you can quickly save and load to check if there was actually an
enemy tapping your shoulder instead it is safer to just hide altogether.
A pretty tough forced fight is on this path (at least in my game). You need to
fight 3 guys with 4 health bars and strong attack. One hit almost takes wipes
your health out. Also there will be more than 1 dot shown at the same time. You
want to have the one that is sparkling. Also note that if red and green is
shown you need to go on the defense. You also want to fight as the second
character for the extra health and power (max 2 rather than 1).
This time you actually have to beat him and it's super super tough. What else
did you expect from such a lousy game to throw at you suddenly? New are the
BLUE dots for which you have to press both A + B and the direction to attack. I
hope you enjoy the learning curve. He has a nice 4-3-2-0 wheel which basically
means you can only damage him little by little IF you are very good at the
timings (and lucky I suppose). Once you finally beat the bloody pulp out of
him...
..then the first section of the game is complete.
Part 2: Strategy
````````````````
This is entirely different than what you have been playing before. You have the
country divided into areas and you must take control of your army by
positioning it strategically and take over the enemy positions.
めいれい Order/Command
のうりょく Ability
ようす Status
The game will often ask you to confirm things so just say YES.
You can set up to 3 commands per territory.
Field Battle Menu:
移動 Move
攻撃 Attack
待機 Standby
偵察 Reconnaissance
退却 Retreat
Each side takes turns in moving, attacking or whatever you like to do. Your
goal in each battle is to defeat the unit defending the fortress and the rest
will surrender. There is a 30-turn limit on a field battle. You lose if your
no.1 unit is defeated or you retreat.
There are several strategies to play and possibly win this so I will just
explain one outcome that works in case you really have no clue. You can play it
slower but this below will have you attack the main fortress very fast. SAVE
before you get into a field battle because attack damage can be random and you
may have to replay a battle and try again!!
Tosa とさ:
Command 1:
めいれい - ひとのわりあて
Reduce the first three to 0 and instead have maximum for へいし (240)
Confirm with the 5th option (おわり End).
Command 2:
めいれい - いどう - ちょうしゅう
Add 140 into へいし
Add 230 into ぶき
Add 80 into たま2
End
つれていかない - はい
Command 3:
へいしくんれん
Choushuu ちょうしゅう:
Command 1:
めいれい - いどう - ちょうしゅう
Reduce the first three to 0 and instead have maximum for へいし (380)
Command 2:
めいれい - せんそう - ちょうしゅう - はまだ
Add 224 into こめ
Add 380 into へいし
Add 160 into たま2
End
かつら - はい
Here comes the first fun field battle.
Turn 1: Move the two lower guns along the bottom south of the forest. Move the
top cannon left into the forest.
Turn 2: Move all your cannons left
Turn 3: Move the first cannon along the path between the forests, the second
cannon up left into the forest and the third one left across the
forest.
Turn 4: Move the first two cannons left and the third one in the gap that
remains.
Turn 5: Standby, move 2 left with the other cannons.
Turn 6: You lose a cannon during the enemy turn. Move your no.1 cannon left as
far as you can and defeat the enemy with the other cannon.
Turn 7: Move the first cannon onto the bridge, the other one across from the
enemy cannon.
Turn 8: You will lose the cannon but you can now attack the fortress cannon
with your remaining one. If you did not destroy it then you might be
cannon fodder now - replay the scenario. You can destroy the enemy and
take over the territory which saves you lots of time to slowly gather
an army instead.
Victory!
Command 3:
This command is now part of your new territory as you basically just moved your
army there.
めいれい - ひとのわりあて
As usually, remove the first three lines and add max into the へいし (497).
End.
Satsuma さつま:
Command 1:
めいれい - ひとのわりあて
I think you get the idea by now. Remove all but the fourth and place 240 into
that instead.
Command 2:
めいれい - いどう - とさ
Add 140 into へいし
Add 230 intoぶき
Add 80 into たま2
End.
つれていかない - はい
Command 3:
へいしくんれん
Now it's the enemy's turn.
Hamada はまだ:
Command 1:
めいれい - せんそう - はまだ - きょうと
Add max into こめ
Add max into へいし
Add max into たま2
End.
かつら - はい
Another field battle.
Turn 1: Move your first cannon right once and up two. Move the second cannon
two spaces to the right of that cannon and the infantry in-between.
Turn 2: move the cannon into the forest northeast, both remaining units move
right.
Turn 3: Your cannon got sacrificed. Move both units right one space.
Turn 4: The infantry took one for the team as well but your cannon can now
attack the fortress which only has infantry guarding it now.
Turn 5+: Keep attack the fortress and the enemy will stand around and do
nothing until they are dead. Great AI!
Kyoto きょうと:
Command 2:
めいれい - ひとのわりあて
Reduce the massive amounts you just conquered to 0 and only have max へいし
(mine was 5394 but it varies).
End.
Command 3:
めいれい - せんそう - おわり
Add max into こめ
Add max into へいし
Add max into たま2
End.
かつら - はい
You may face either 1 or 2 cannons plus infantry. You should be 3 cannons but
either way you are most superior after the previous battle.
Turn 1: Do you really want a strategy after you are so superior?... well move
the units north and position them to move through the mountain valley.
Turn 2: Move the units left
Turn 3: Attack the enemy with your first cannon, move the second unit left into
the forest, move a little left with the last one
Turn 4: If you still need to attack the unit from earlier, kill it this time.
Move left with the other units.
Turn 5: Attack the fortress. Keep your first unit back especially if it turned
into infantry after the previous attacking. The fortress should fall
soon.
Use the へいしくんれん command until the enemy finishes his turn and you end up
controlling...
Owari おわり:
Command 1:
めいれい - ひとのわりあて
One last time, empty out the first three and max the last one.
End.
Command 2:
めいれい - せんそう - おわり - えど
Add max into こめ
Add max into へいし
Add max into たま2
End.
かつら - はい
If you are facing three cannons from the enemy then you need cannot win the
fight. In that case you need to take out the other areas first before trying
again here because even just approaching the fortress will annihilate your
units. The guide below assumes the enemy has infantry in the lower fortress
spaces.
Turn 1: Move the first cannon right all the way, the rest up and right one
spot.
Turn 2: Move the first two cannons right, the last one top two spaces.
Turn 3: Move all cannons right one space.
Turn 4: Attack the infantry from the left and south. It should fall quickly.
Turn 5: Move the south cannon right.
Turn 6: Attack the other infantry and take it out.
Turn 7+: Move around to the bridge and move one of your cannons onto the
fortress to win. You will probably need to sacrifice a unit that is
attacked by the remaining enemy before you can move your other unit on
