Hello and welcome to my strategy guide for Legendary Wings, a port of a classic
arcade game and one of the more entertaining shooter games out there for the
NES.
This kind of game is not my specialty, but I was looking around GameFAQs and
noticed there wasn't a guide written for this one yet, which kind of surprised
me. This is not one of the most complicated games in the world, but it does
have a decent amount of challenge...at least enough for SOMETHING to be written
about it, so here it is.

Okay, so this game basically has no plot, but it's a shooter game, so does it
really need one?

In order to "save the world," you must fight your way through 5 action-packed
stages. Each stage is divided into an 4 kinds of sections: Overhead, Danger,
Lucky, and Palace.
Overhead: The screen scrolls verically while you fly around, shooting enemies.
The main goal of this part is to fly to palace at the end and defeat the Dragon
boss that is guarding it. The Dragon is just your average fire-breather, but
it's best not to be careless around him.
Danger: About a third of the way through the Overhead area, you will encounter
a giant head lying on the ground. This head will open its mouth and shoot
little whirlwinds at you. If you get hit by one of these, you will be pulled
into the "Danger" zone, which is a side-scrolling penalty area containing some
difficult enemies, including a mini-boss at the end where you fight a bunch of
burrowing worms. Do your best to avoid entering this place (unless you're a
sucker for punishment).
Lucky: In the Overhead part, once you get past the giant head, you will find
many cannons on the ground that can only be destroyed by your missiles. One of
the cannons contains the secret entrance to the stage's "Lucky" area, which is
a side-scrolling bonus stage with nothing but power-ups and bonus prizes.
Among these prizes are hearts that give you an extra continue for every one
that you collect. If you want to enter this place (and who wouldn't?), shoot
as many cannons as possible and touch the whirlwind that appears when one of
them explodes. The entrance to this area is always hidden by the same cannon,
so once you find it, you'll have an easier time getting there again.
Palace: Once you beat the Dragon in the Overhead section, you can enter the
final part of the stage, the Palace. This is a side-scrolling area, much like
the Danger zone, but with some tougher enemies. There are also some trick
walls that you'll have to destroy before the screen's scrolling crushes you
against them. If you reach the end of this part, you get to face the core of
the palace, which is a giant spaceship-like thing that shoots giant eyeballs
and some kind of pink "stuff" at you. Defeat the core to finish the stage.

# Powering Up #
###############################################################################
You start the game with 3 lives. At the beginning of each life, you are very
weak. If you are shot or touched by an enemy even once, you die. You also
have the weakest possible weapons at the start of every life. Both your life
power and your weapons are enhanced when you power up, by collecting the little
circles containing the letter "P".
Each "P" upgrades your weapons by one level each time you collect one. This
upgrade includes a gun that (usually) does more damage, as well as missiles
that move faster and have a longer range. Better yet, getting hit when you
have a better weapon does not kill you, but instead just lowers your weapon
level (while this is still bad, at least you're still alive).
There are 5 different levels of weapons. The best way to get through this game
is to get to the most powerful weapon and keep it. This is easier to do than
you think, because you can last a lot longer in this game with the stronger
weapons. Plus, if you get to the highest weapon level, you become the
legendary Firebird, which can take 3 hits before your weapon level goes down!
Below is a list of the 5 weapon levels:
(1) Normal: You start with this level. Your gun has just normal bullets and
your missiles are slow and have a very small range. You die if you're hit
while at this level.
(2) Twin Laser: These lasers are twice as powerful as your normal bullets. You
also have improved range on your missiles. Taking a hit here will bring
you down to the Normal level.
(3) Penetration: You shoot a long bar of fire that is 3 times as powerful as
your normal shots. Your missile speed and range is better yet. Getting
hit brings you back down to Twin Lasers.
(4) Flame Shots: Personally, I don't like this gun. It's only twice as strong
as your normal shots, but it's supposed to make up for that by giving you
a shot that goes in 3 directions (up, left and right). This does give you
better range against weaker enemies, but it's terrible against the big
ones. If you get hit, you get your Penetration gun back. But, if you can
get another P, you get to the almighty...
(5) Firebird: This beauty shoots thick arcs of flame that are 4 times as strong
as the normal shots. It also has an awesome missile range...you can hit a
ground target with a speeding bomb from anywhere on the screen, as long as
you line up your shot properly. Also, as mentioned above, you can take 3
hits before you lose the Firebird! Getting extra P's at this level does
not help you in any way, nor can you recover any damage you take while at
this level (for example, if you get hit twice and then get a P, you still
only have one hit left). After taking 3 hits, you go back to Flame Shots.
Note: There's one enemy that even the Firebird can't stand up to...walls!
Whatever you do, do NOT get trapped behind a wall at ANY time. If the
screen's scrolling crushes you against a wall, you will be killed, no
matter what level your weapons are at! You would then have to start a
new life at the Normal level again, which can quickly ruin your game!

# Walkthrough #
###############################################################################
Based on what I've shown you in the above section, you can probably tell that
the best way to beat this game is to get the best possible weapons and then
get through everything without ever dying. You're not going to last very long
in the later stages without them.
Having said that, the most important advice I can give you for this game is to
master Stage 1! Don't bother with the other stages until you can nail down
the first one. You should be able to finish this stage as the Firebird, which
will make the other levels that much easier. Not only that, but the enemies
throughout the whole game don't have a wide variety of attacks, so if you can
handle Stage 1, you can handle almost everything.
To help you with this, I will go into as much detail as possible for the first
stage. Later levels in the walkthough won't be as in-depth, but they will
still tell you about the special things you'll need to watch for.
Another General Tip: Whenever you get hit or first become a Firebird, your
character will flash for a short time. While this is happening, you cannot be
hurt by anything, but you can also fly through walls. If you stop flashing
when any part of your character is "inside" one of these walls, you'll get
stuck there and then die when that wall scrolls off the screen. Be VERY
careful not to let this happen, especially if you're powered up!
With that, let's begin the walkthrough.

Stage 1

* Overhead *
The first enemies you'll encounter will not shoot at you, but if you don't get
them before they loop together in a circle, they'll fly right at you. If this
happens, simply move out of the way after they charge. After 3 groups of these
things, a flashing orb will fly across the screen. Shoot it to reveal a
power-up, then quickly take care of another enemy group before trying to take
it.
Next, you'll find your first cannons. Quickly move in close and take out the
2 rightmost cannons with your missiles, then move to the right to dodge the
bullets they shoot. Keep shooting all this time to take out more flying
enemies, along with another orb with your second power-up. You'll see some
different, slower flying enemies grouped with a few more cannons. Constantly
move around to avoid everything while shooting down what you can. First rule:
don't be greedy, just stay alive.
You'll come to your first giant head. Move into one of the lower corners and
then circle around it to avoid the whirlwinds it shoots. They're slow and easy
to avoid, but if one of them touches you, you'll have to play through the
Danger zone, which is pretty tough since you're not fully armed yet. If you
want help with that area, refer to the next section below.
After the head, get to the right to take on 4 spiralling armored ships. They
can take a lot of punishment, so move away if they get too close to avoid them,
as well as their bullets. Shoot the cannons below as well, if you get a
chance.
After flying over a short dark brown section of land, you'll see some stone
statues below that will send their heads after you when you get too close.
These heads can't be destroyed, so just dodge them.
Another dark brown section follows the statues. Here, you'll find a ton of
these little blue enemies that will charge at you if you don't get them
quickly. In the middle of that mess, some flying shells will swoop in and
shoot at you. Once again, keep moving around while shooting.
Be ready to shoot the first cannon you see after the blue enemies. That cannon
will produce a whirlwind that will take you to the Lucky area (make sure you
touch it or you won't go in). After that, the rest of this part of the stage
is pretty non-descript. Just stay on the bottom of the screen (don't get
trapped behind any of the stone statues that appear).
You'll know you're close to the palace when you've spent some time flying over
an area with ground made of small brick. At this point, some angry-looking
winged statues will start firing lots of bullets at you. It takes 3 missiles
to the head to get rid of each of these things. The best way to handle them is
to line yourself up with them as soon as their feet appear at the top of the
screen, then start shooting when their heads scroll down a bit. If you're
powered up and fast enough, they shouldn't get off too many shots.
At the very least, if you can't kill all of the statues, you should take out
the last two of them that appear side by side when you reach the entrance to
the Palace. This will make it a lot easier to beat the Dragon. When that
winged beast appears, stay at the bottom of the screen. The Dragon has two
attacks: a 3-way flame shot and a ramming move, where it dashes straight down.
The fire is easy to dodge, but you don't want to be below it when it tries to
ram you. Shoot at it when it's in the upper part of the screen and you should
have no trouble at all.
* Danger *
In all 5 stages, these Danger zones have the exact same layout (and the
graphics are all ugly). The first half is always wide open, with a blue watery
substance at the bottom at some points (don't touch it). The second half is
divided into upper and lower sections, where you must choose which path to
take. Once you finish the area, you are transported to the worm mini-boss.
Defeat it to escape from this place and go back to the Overhead area.
Having covered the layout here, each stage walkthrough will just go over some
tips on fighting the enemies that appear.
You'll first have to fight your way past an army of giant blue hornets. They
appear on the right side of the screen in threes. Shooting one just makes
another come after you in its place until you get far enough into the stage.
Concentrate on shooting down either the top or bottom row of them. Be ready to
dodge if one of the hornets from the middle row tried to swoop down on you.
After the hornets, green and white pods will fly in from the top and bottom of
the screen. If you don't kill these things fast enough, they will fire a
four-way shot in an "X" pattern. Stay on the left and in line with them, in
case they get their shots off.
After the pods, the next enemy is a flying snake that seems to be made up of
bones. It doesn't shoot at you, so aim for its head or avoid it.
Choose the top path when a long platform scrolls in across the middle. More
hornets and pods will appear, and you'll have an easier time avoiding damage up
there.
The worm mini-boss and it's shots are easy to avoid, but killing it will be
tough if you don't have a good weapon. Since this is just Stage 1, you only
have to fight 2 worms (later stages have more), so you shouldn't have too much
trouble. Just be ready to dodge a shot whenever a worm crawls all the way out
of it's hole. Remember that you can face both left and right during this
battle (normally, you always face right during horizontal levels).
* Lucky *
Like with the Danger zones, the secret Lucky areas of the 5 stages each have
the exact same layout. The only things that change are the types and locations
of the bonuses, power-ups and hearts. Try shooting at the walls to uncover
some of these items (look carefully at the walls to see the items inside) and
also open up an escape path if you get trapped behind one of them.
Even though these areas are helpful, they're a bit long and boring. Still,
don't fall asleep...if a wall crushes you, you can still die!
If you got here with a Penetrator weapon, the 2 P's in this area should get you
to the Firebird level.
* Palace *
If you were good enough to get past the Overhead section, this part should be
easy. The enemies are all slow and predictable.
There are pink squares in the background flip over to reveal holes that shoot
at you...no problem, just shoot them when they're open.
Blue machines on the ceilings will occasionally fire lasers straight down. You
can just shoot most of them, but some are in places you can't get to, so just
move past them are they fire.
Midway through, the path will split into 3 parts, each with a wall in the way.
The middle wall cannot be broken, but the top and bottom ones can. Pick the
bottom one, because there's a power-up on the other side of these walls that
cannot be reached if you use the upper path (use good timing to get past the
shots of the blue machine nearby).
Finally, there are some green machines that fire shots both left and right.
After 3 shots, they fly up or down until they touch a floor/ceiling, and then
they shoot 3 more times, move again, etc. Hit them while they move to avoid
damage.
You'll know that you've reached the core when you run out of palace and fly
into an empty, black area. The giant machine will appear on the right and
there will be an earthquake as it "wakes up", during which it will move a
certain distance across the screen, depending on what stage you're on (for
Stage 1, this isn't very far). This thing attacks in two different ways. In
the upper and lower parts are eyes that open every few seconds and shoot
eyeballs at you. If you have enough firepower, you can shoot them, but be
ready to dodge. The other attack comes from the middle. A gate will open up
and fire a spray shot that's tough to avoid if you're too far away from the
machine. In order to destroy the core, you must hit the middle gate when it
opens to shoot at you. Line yourself up with it and when you get a chance,
fire as many times as you dare before dodging up or down to avoid the spray.
The eyeballs sometimes shoot at you at the same time as the spray, so watch it.
This battle always takes awhile, especially if you're not fully powered up, but
it isn't that bad.

Stage 2

* Overhead *
There are lots of enemies to shoot at early on. Most of them don't shoot back,
but their numbers will make it tough on you without a good weapon (I know...so
what else is new, right?). The first ones are white, followed by some stronger
red things with eyeballs, followed by some small red enemies. Among this third
group are some wishbone-shaped enemies that shoot a lot of bullets and are very
durable--so much so that even the Firebird has a tough time killing them--just
dodge around and try to shoot at the 2 power-up orbs that will fly out while
you're fighting these things.
Fly around the giant head (it shoots more whirlwinds this time, but they're
still easy to dodge), then take on another army of enemies that will behave
similarly to what you've seen so far. Be on the lookout for another power-up,
but focus on finding a segment of dark water, about the size of the screen.
After this, you'll see a single cannon, followed by a pair of them. The left
cannon of this pair is the Lucky stage.
There are some faster enemies toward the end, but nothing unusual. You'll come
to the brick-surfaced part, which means another battle with the statues.
Missile them to death, but be on the lookout for another power-up orb as you
fight them. Blast the Dragon at the end...nothing new in this battle either.
* Danger *
This area features mostly the same enemies as the Danger zone in the first
stage. There are still the hornets, pods, and bone snakes.
Adding to your misery here are some blue tadpoles that fly up out of the water
sections. Stop short of the water and blast them until you can see land on the
other side of the screen, then fly across, still shooting.
Take the lower path when the level splits. It's easier to shoot the pods from
there. Besides, some green machines from the first palace are in this area as
well, and they can't hit you as easily if you're down there.
The mini-boss features two worms, just like the first stage.
* Lucky *
Not much to say about this. Just keep shooting at the walls to get extra
stuff. Remember not to get stuck in the walls if you take a power-up and
become a Firebird.
* Palace *
The second palace starts with a series of walls. Only one section of each wall
can be destroyed, so fly up and down as you shoot to find the right spots. The
last wall will be thicker than the others. After you fly through it, don't fly
too low, or you'll be hit by the green machines. There are more of these
things after a swarm of hornets...get to the bottom to avoid their first shots.
The core will come out a little farther this time, exposing 4 eyeballs instead
of the 2 you faced before. Attack it in the same way as in Stage 1. While
waiting for the gate to open, you can try shooting at the eyeballs...if you hit
them enough, they can be destroyed, weakening the offensive power of the boss.

Stage 3

* Overhead *
This stage features a series of mountains that you have to fly around, not
over. Attached to these are turrets that will point at you and shoot bullets.
Some of them are on the far side of the cliffs and cannot be hit without the
flame shot. Just stay low, so they can't aim at you for more than a couple of
shots. You'll see some gray balls that will fire spikes in 8 directions.
They're pretty smart, able to line themselves up with you between shots.
Whether you kill them or not, they should be easy enough to handle.
The giant head's whirlwinds move a bit faster now, so make sure you're always
moving as you pass by. The next area contains a ton of cannons, turrets, and
some new gray enemies that quickly slip in and out of the screen to shoot.
As long as you keep shooting, you'll be fine here, since your shots can destroy
their "missiles". The problem comes when you're attacked by all of these
different enemies at the same time. Stay low to avoid the turrets and
concentrate on dodging the cannon bullets, while shooting at the gray stuff.
Don't worry about bombing the cannons until everything else is gone. The Lucky
entrance is past this section anyway...You should have passed a mountain with
3 turrets on top (where you can't hit them), followed by a group of cannons.
Gray enemies will appear again, and when they stop appearing, the next cannon
on the right is the Lucky zone.
After a few more cannons, you'll find some interesting pink enemies that fire
a 3-way shot when they die...if you don't kill them, they'll shoot up instead
of down when you try to pass them. Next comes the usual palace statues,
followed by the Dragon. Kill it, as you have before (it does its dash move
more often, but no big deal).
* Danger *
You've seen all of these enemies before, but the combinations of them are
slightly different (more hornets than usual). Take the lower path when you
can. The mini-boss features 4 worms this time, but they still only attack in
pairs.
* Lucky *
Nothing new here, just more bonuses, power-ups, and hearts.
* Palace *
Things start out pretty simple. You'll have to shoot a bunch of pink squares
in the wall, some of which are right above the lava. If you don't have a
spreading weapon, kneel on land at the left edge of the pit to get them. Next,
blue machines will attack from above in "safe" spots where you can't get them.
Speed past them one at a time as each one fires. When a wall appears, shoot
your way through the middle of it. There are a bunch of small square walls
with blue and green machines hiding behind them. If you get hit, remember not
to fly into the walls! After this, a small swarm of hornets will fly in.
A new breed of enemy will appear after the hornets: flame-throwing robots.
These devils are the worst enemies in the game! They appear quickly and as
soon as their "parts" come together, they fly towards you, shooting a constant
stream of flames that cannot be crossed without taking damage (even though it
looks like there are gaps, you can't fit through them). To deal with them,
stay left while keeping a sharp eye on the right side of the screen. One of
the robot's parts will fly in from that edge and the other parts will assemble
at the same height as that part. What you need to do is use this part to line
yourself up with the robot as it begins to form. That way, when it "wakes up",
it will fly straight across the screen (towards you), making it easy to shoot
or simply fly around. The flames the robot shoots come from its bottom cannon,
so dodge accordingly.
The core has 6 eyes this time, but after the robots, this part is cake.

Stage 4
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Overhead *
Personally, I think that this is the toughest place in the game. There are
walls on both sides for most of the time, giving you less room to maneuver.
To make things worse, you'll have to fly UNDER some pink tubes. You can't see
through them, so anytime you're under one, you'll have to keep track of where
you are, as well as any enemies/bullets that fly in there to greet you. Also,
enemies will shoot at you from many places on these walls...places that you
can't hit. Oh yeah, one other thing: Don't touch the spikes on the walls...
they hurt.
Adding to your misery are some metal X-shaped walls that appear in line with
you so that you have to fly around them just to shoot. Try to hover around
the edges of the screen to make these things appear in more managable places.
After the X's pass, you'll be bombarded by a large group of cannons and gray
enemies, like those from Stage 3. Stick and move, as before.
Fly around the giant head, then be prepared for more of the same. Some drill
bits in the walls will fly out at you, unless you shoot them. Once you get
past a group of small red enemies, get ready to look for the Lucky entrance.
This time, the door is _NOT_ opened by shooting a cannon. Instead, look for
the path to get really thin (about half the width of the screen). Two pink
tubes will appear close together. The entrance is hidden in the black space
between the tubes. To line yourself up with the invisible target, look for a
group of 3 small squares on the bottom edge of the second tube. The target is
in line with the second of these squares, about half way between the pair of
tubes.
The rest of this area shouldn't be as bad, especially if you found the Lucky
area. Just fight your way past the same old enemies and try not to lose track
of yourself when flying under the tubes. The Dragon doesn't have any new
tricks either.
* Danger *
Just your average Danger zone. Nothing you haven't seen before. A snake will
appear in a crowed area, so get him fast. There are 6 worms at the end, but
this should be easy if you've seen them before.
* Lucky *
Whatever you do, DON'T MISS THIS ONE! Refer to the Overhead part of this stage
walkthrough to find this area's hidden entrance. If you get here, you'll find
enough power-ups to get Firebird weapons for two players! Since Stage 4 is so
difficult, you'll probably need the extra help this place can give you.
* Palace *
Stay at medium height and shoot continuously. This will take care of the green
machines. After a couple of loops, shoot through the bottom of a wall to reach
a power-up, but quickly back off and get to the top or you'll get trapped and
die (wait for the green machine behind you to scroll off the screen). There
are 2 more power-ups shortly after this, one that's behind a wall. Get them
quickly, then shoot through the same wall at medium height to get through
(don't go for this unless you have enough time). After this, you'll have to
dogde more blue and green machines, followed by those nasty flame-throwers from
the last palace. Do the best you can with these, then blast through some
hornets to reach the core, which now has 8 eyes. Just keep shooting...that's
all I can say.

Stage 5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Overhead *
No real surprises early on. You've seen everything before. The giant head
will give you a real challenge. Its whirlwinds are so fast now, that I can
almost guarantee that they will get you. It can be done though, so here's how:
Get to one side of the screen and try to fly in place, a short distance past
the mouth. When you see white coming out of the black mouth, quickly push down
to dodge, then fly back up to where you were and wait for the next shot.
The head will shoot 6 times. The 3rd and 4th shots will come very close
together, so don't go back up right away after the 3rd shot. Rather, dodge
both shots before moving up. If you make it, stay low to avoid damage from the
next enemies, which will come from the sides.
You'll have your hands full in the next section, shooting the usual swarms of
enemies, while dealing with a large number of cannons. Fortunately, even if
you can't hit destroy the cannons, they're close enough together that you'll
have plenty of room to dodge the bullets. Next comes a series of red walls
with turrets on them. Once again, you can't shoot some of the turrets, so stay
low until the walls force you to move. When you see 3 cannons on top of a
wall, shoot the next cannon (the last one on the blue land) to enter the Lucky
stage.
There will be a few more walls to fly around. After the last wall, stay low
again and don't let the X enemies block your escape. Take out the statues,
followed by the last Dragon, to reach the final palace.
* Danger *
It's almost a given that you will end up here, so don't feel bad if you got hit
by the giant head. If you're familiar with Danger zones, this will be the
same as usual...just take the lower path when given a choice. It still has 6
worms at the end, but the rest of the enemies are just the same old stuff.
* Lucky *
This one is not nearly as lucrative as in Stage 4 (probably since it's easier
to find), but it still has 3 power-ups, along with the usual bonuses.
* Palace *
Your "favorite" enemies, the flame robots start out this final area. There are
many walls to fly around in the next section, so be careful not to get trapped,
especially if you get hit (no point in losing now, since you've come this far).
You'll have to quickly shoot through a series of walls, each one from a
different height. Here are the locations of the weak spots, relative to each
other: Medium height, then bottom, top, slightly down, then bottom for the
thicker wall. There are many power-ups in here...enough to become a Firebird
from the lowest level, so take full advantage. Once the walls are gone, you
get to fight more flame-throwers. I recommend dodging them instead of killing
them this time. You won't have to fight as many this way.
The final core will push its way across almost the entire screen, showing its
10 eyeballs. This fight is still the same, but you'll have trouble when it
comes out all the way. Hopefully, your weapons are strong enough to shoot the
eyeballs. Otherwise, you'll just have to dodge along the left side of the
screen and hope that the gate doesn't open at the same time (the gate only
opens every few seconds, so try to keep track of this).
When the core explodes, it looks like you're done, but wait...the screen starts
scrolling again! What now? This time, you have to shoot your way through the
pink middle of the core into another empty area. Here, you will face the true
final boss: A small machine that warps around the screen, shooting what looks
like ninja throwing stars at you ("Why," you ask? I don't understand what
little storyline there is to this game, but this is probably some sort of
central core of whatever this machine is that's trying to destroy mankind).
Here's how to take on this final enemy: First thing to notice is that you can
face left in this battle, just like in the worm rooms of the Danger zones.
Despite this, just try to stay on the left, since you're probably used to that.
When the machine appears, 4 stars will fly in from off screen and land on the
corners of it. To avoid damage, quickly line yourself up with the machine as
soon as you see it. If you can't get left of it, go above or below it. Once
the stars have landed they will all fly at your position after about a second,
at which time the machine will disappear. Obviously, you'll have to move to
avoid this attack. All this time, you should be shooting. Whenever possible,
get to the left (or right) of the machine as the stars are flying in to strike
back at it. If you can hang on to the Firebird long enough, this thing won't
last much longer than the other cores did.
Good Luck! Once this machine is defeated, you win the game! Enjoy the ending
music, along with the lousy ending message and credits. Then the game will
start over again at Stage 1, so if you like, you can keep on playing.
