King's Knight FAQ Version 1.0
By Dylan Andersen

July 5, 2000
Preface
This FAQ is for the 1989 Nintendo Entertainment System game, King's
Knight, one of the first console, and general, releases by the now
enormous video game company, Squaresoft, Inc. This game reveals quite a
humble beginning along with some hints of the future direction of the
company. From the exterior of the game you may expect an RPG, but
King's Knight is mainly a vertical shooter, with item status training
and a storyline that give a slight RPG feel. Because of somewhat poor
play control, this game can be difficult and frustrating. But with use
of the layouts and continue mode described in this FAQ, you can create a
plan of attack and conquer this game.
Story and Goal
An evil dragon has kidnapped the Princess Claire from the Kingdom of
Izander. Four heroes, a knight, a wizard, a monster, and a thief, must
train separately then come together to save her.
Controls
Control Pad - Move character 8 directions, jump on islands, mountains,
and towns by pushing into them, and scroll arrow on continue mode
screen.
A Button - Fire weapon and highlight character in Continue Mode.
B Button - Use lead character's spell in Stage Five. Each spell may
only be used once in certain places during the stage.
Start Button - Begin and pause the game. The pause comes in handy for
planning during the game.
Select Button - Access Continue Mode from the title screen.
Character Abilities and Levels
Each character must gather items to improve his abilities and levels and
cast spells. The items include as many as seven Jump increases, seven
Speed increases, three Weapon increases, and three Shield increases.
Each time one of these items is collected, the character gains a level.
Therefore the highest level is 20. But each character also has unique
abilities as listed below:
Knight "Ray Jack" is naturally quick moving, starting with a speed
increase at level 1. With four pieces of Element D he can cast Zainen
to change into a winged horse. He is also somewhat good at defeating
each type of statue.
Wizard "Kaliva" is naturally a good jumper, starting with a jump
increase at level 1. With four pieces of Element A he can cast Naizath
to defeat enemies in the water. He also defeats lion statues easily.
Monster "Barusa" is naturally shielded with defense, starting with a
shield increase at level 1. With four pieces of Element C he can cast
Cetune to change into a dragon. He also defeats whole dragon statues
easily.
Thief "Toby" is naturally speedy, starting with a speed increase at
level 1. With four pieces of Element B he can cast Balbath to destroy
monoliths. He also defeats gargoyle statues easily.
Items
Life Up - Up arrow icon. Replenishes life to stay alive.
Life Down - Down arrow icon. Reduces life. Avoid these.
Jump - Spring icon. Increase jumping ability as jumps become quicker,
higher, and possible on different areas. Collect up to seven per
character.
Speed - Shoe icon. Increase speed of movement as dodging becomes more
possible and larger areas can be covered. Collect up to seven per
character.
Weapon - Plain white ball icon. Increase weapon strength as enemies die
quicker, fire becomes more rapid, and more objects can be hit at once.
Collect up to three per character.
Shield - Shield icon. Increase defense as life reduces less on each
injury. Collect up to three per character.
Secrets Revealer - Ball with black stripe icon. Shows where obstacles,
land masses, and items are located.
Hidden Cave - Staircase icon. Leads to small underground stages with
items that cannot be obtained above ground.
Elements - A is a triangular icon. B is a dual crystal icon. C is a
double V icon. D is a small ball surrounded by eight smaller balls
icon. One of each element is located in each of the first four stages.
Collect four of each to cast each element's spell once during Stage
Five.
Sword - Sword icon. Three pieces must be collected. They are all found
in Stage Five and will be used to slay the evil dragon.
Position Change - Four different curved arrow icons. The right arrow
turns the group clockwise once. The left arrow turns the group counter
clockwise once. The clockwise U-turn turns the group clockwise randomly
one to three times. The counter clockwise U-turn turns the group
counter clockwise randomly one to three times. Use these to change the
leader during Stage Five.
Enemies
There are many different enemies, but many do the same things:
Walking and shooting - trolls, worms, rockmen, zombies, goblins,
cyclopses, slugs, stingrays, sea serpents, tritons, spiders, and blue
knights.
Walking - sharks.
Flying and shooting - ghosts, white dragons, witches, rockheads, and
demon bats.
Flying - tornados.
Not moving and shooting - lion statues, gargoyle statues, whole dragon
statues, and the evil dragon.
Bobbing with three-way shot - sea monsters, octopi, and lava monsters.
Charging out of blocks - termites, snakes, and eels.
Fire shooting - dragon head statues and knight statues.
Training Stages 1-4
There is mainly this strategy to the first four stages: blast
everything and collect the items while keeping alive. As these are
training stages, collecting the status and magic items for stronger
characters is the main goal. Using the layouts below you can map out a
plan to gather all the items, 19 status items and 4 element items per
stage. You must destroy all the blocks in the path to each of the items
in order to obtain them. Avoid getting pinned behind a block or enemy
by the moving screen as it will kill your character. You must enter and
complete each hidden cave in each stage. Be sure to get each status
item within reach before entering the caves. In each cave are some
status items and the Element B. The whole dragon statues can be
destroyed with about 20 shots. Before leaving each cave you must defeat
a white dragon with about 12 second level weapon hits. Beginning each
stage can be difficult, but as you get more and more status items, it
becomes much easier. With a little practice and strategy, the Continue
Mode, and help from the pause button, you can easily collect all the
items for the spell and level 20 of each character. Try to finish each
stage with as much life as possible since it will affect you in Stage
Five. By the way, you can get Element C in Stage One by doing a reverse
jump on to the mountains before it, then by shooting the tree containing
it.
Continue Mode
After you have gotten game over, you can access Continue Mode to improve
the condition of the team. Press Select at the title screen. A status
screen will appear. It will display in order which of each element was
collected in that character's stage and the level of that character.
Highlight the characters you want to improve with the A Button and push
Start to retrain them. The character will start from scratch, but try
to collect more of the items than you got before. If your character is
about to die or you collected less items than before, hit Reset to
retain the character's previous conditions. After building your
characters you'll get to try Stage Five again. Continue Mode cannot be
used if none of your characters passed his training stage. To play
Stage Five only, highlight no characters and hit start.
Group Stage 5
Description
All four characters and Elements B and C must be present to pass this
stage. Stage Five is much more difficult than the training stages. You
must strategically guild all four characters through the long stage at
the same time. One character leads the group as the others inactively
follow, making dodging difficult. The group shares the life bar, jumps
together, and dies together. You begin and work through the stage with
the average of certain abilities and life of each character from
training. Use the position changing arrows to get the character you
want to the front. The group can get pinned and defeated by the moving
screen much more easily; even position changes can cause this. Also
remember that like in the training stages, enemy cannot shoot at you
when you are standing next to them.
Walkthrough
The different statue types will indicate who should lead at each point
in the stage. Start by changing the wizard to the lead. Destroy the
spiders and the three lion statues. When the whole pool of lava is
visible on the screen you can use the spell to kill all the lava
monsters. Now switch to the thief for lead and pick up the Sword piece
and Life Up. Destroy the ghosts and the four gargoyle statues. Collect
the Life Up items in the monolith path. Near the end of the path you
must use the spell to destroy the monoliths. Switch to the monster and
pick up the Sword piece and Life Ups. Just before the D.D you must use
the spell to turn into a dragon. Ram its invincible body into all the
ghosts and shots on the screen. The group will change back. Start
killing the mean little blue knights and grabbing the Life Ups.
Momentarily switch to the thief to destroy the gargoyle statue. Then
switch to the wizard to destroy the lion statues. Pick up the Sword
piece and get to the top left or right side of the screen to move safely
along the lava lake. Now you can have a choice. The game would like
you to switch to the knight and use the spell to change into the winged
horse half way across the lake. But the game gets difficult when your
group changes back. I prefer to put the thief in the lead and dodge my
way through the knight statues that cannot be destroyed. After this
destroy all the gargoyle statues, dodge the lion statues, and grab the
Life Ups. Here is the evil dragon. Before the dragon becomes active,
quickly grab several of the impeding U-turn position change arrows while
dodging statue fire. Do this to give room to dodge dragon fire. Now
each of the heroes must hit the dragon in the head about 15 times. Use
the items to change the character. When one character has hit it
enough, and white flash will indicate so. If you do not have the three
Sword pieces, the dragon will not be defeated. With the three Sword
pieces on the fourth flash, the dragon will be defeated.
Stage Layouts
The stages are diagramed below in accordance with their matrix
structure. Above ground stages 1-4 are 16 X 149 squares, stage 5 is 16
X 236, and hidden caves are 12 X 43 squares. Below is a key indicating
the type of block or item in each square. Most items are located
beneath blocks that must be destroyed with your weapon. Blank squares
are normal ground.

Ending
When the evil dragon has been sedated, the four character pull out the
sword and slay it. Congratulations to the four heroes as the knight
steps forward to lovingly greet Princess Claire. "Peace spread across
the land, and the people celebrated . . . Thanks Rayjack, Kaliva,
Barusa, Toby and you, brave fighter thank you . . ." Similar to Super
Mario Brothers.
