Dates Written: January 21st to January 22nd, 2005
I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES
FAQ completion Project of 2004-2005, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board.
We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo
Entertainment System! Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision,
Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or
any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true
gaming is at!
Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce. I miss you, and I hope you are living
it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my
memories, and you will never be forgotten.

-----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Introduction
2) Controls
3) Game Options
4) Strategy
5) Final Word
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------Introduction---------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) The pitch is ready, the crowd is has a fevered madness, and you are in
control of the destiny of your chosen team. Head out there, crack one
past the goalie, and allow your Hooligans to run wild! Whether you call
it Soccer or Football, tis a bonny good play!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------Controls-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) The following section will look at all the controls that you need to know
to crack the ball into the net for the win. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLL!
D-Pad : Moves your player in the corresponding direction.
SELECT : When paused, exits the Practice mode.
START : Pauses/unpauses the game.
B Button: Pushes the ball forward.
A Button: Shoots the ball as well as trigger Corner, Penalty, and Free
Kicks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------Game Options---------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) This section will look at the different game modes available to be
played.
o----------o
Language
o----------o
English, Francais, Deutsche, Italiano, or Nederland are the language options
for this game. For the purpose of this FAQ, I will be conversing and
playing in the English option.
o----------o
Practice
o----------o
Upon entering this option, three choices await:
Skills....: This mode will allow your full team to go after an opposing
goalie, practicing shooting, passing, and corner kicks.
Penalties.: This mode will allow you to take a penalty kick, which is done
by pressing the A Button to shoot, timing it so the moving arrow
will be over an open portion of the goal.
Free Kicks: This mode will allow your team to try and kick the ball past the
opposing team's wall defense and goalie. When kicking, hold
LEFT to curve the ball right, and hold RIGHT to curve the ball
left.
o-------------o
Single Game
o-------------o
Upon entering this mode, choose between one player, two player (versus), or
team mode, then confirm player positions. Following that is a single match
on the pitch.
o---------------o
Int. Friendly
o---------------o
England, Wales, Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy, France, and Scotland are the
available teams for this mode, so choose the two (choose the first one as the
first player's team, choosing the second team as the cpu/second player's
team). This will lead into one game with international opponent's playing
for supremacy.
o------------o
Kit Colour
o------------o
This mode allows for the customization of each country's shirt colours (which
range from the somewhat normal for that country to the totally absurd colours
and hues no self respecting nation would ever wear).
o---------o
Options
o---------o
The following options are available to customize each game:
Pitch........: Normal, Wet, Soggy, or Plastic (astroturf).
Duration.....: two 3 minute halves, two 5 minute halves, two 10 minute
halves, or two 20 minute halves.
Wind.........: Off, Light, Medium, or Strong.
Extra Time...: No or Yes.
After Touch..: Yes or No.
Skill Level..: Set skill level of the teams (choose from as high as
International, going down through Division to Division 4).
Select Tactic: Set tactic of the teams (choose between a 4-3-3, a 4-4-2,
a 4-2-4, or a 5-3-2).
Referee......: Choose between Random or everyone's favourite referee, Ian
Robinson! Actually, I have NO CLUE who this guy is, but I am
pretty sure he is famous or infamous for something.
Offside......: No or Yes.
Marking......: No or Yes.
Game Speed...: Normal or Trainer.
o--------------o
Select Teams
o--------------o
Forming two groups of four, choose from the following countries:
England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium,
Sweden, Denmark, U.S.S.R, Portugal, Norway, Finland, Switzerland.
After choosing, the pools are set for the next three settings.
o-----o
Cup
o-----o
The eight selected teams will enter a single elimination tournament, vying
to be #1.
o--------o
League
o--------o
The eight selected teams will be in a league where each team will challenge
the other teams twice, meaning each will play 14 games. Once the round
robin is finished, the team with the highest point total will be declared
the victor (note that if they are tied, win totals and how well a team
played against the other team[s] that are in the tie situation).
o-------------o
Euro Trophy
o-------------o
The eight selected teams (4 per pool) will play each other once in a round
robin format, with the top two of each pool qualifying for the next round.
The four teams will be entered into single elimination games, with the
surviving team winning the Euro Cup!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------Strategy-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) This section will cover some strategies to help your chances of achieving
victory.
a) Try to approach the goal from the corners of the 18 yard box. By coming
in on a diagonal, the computer's goalie will often get confused, making
it easier to score.
b) If an opposing player is closing on your player in your own half of the
field, look for a passing lane to a team mate. If that is not available,
then kick the ball upfield, away from the attack, buying time to get your
defenders into place.
c) Try curving the ball when kicked to trick the opposing goalie. It also
works for getting the ball away from the 18 yard box on a dump in,
allowing retrieval of the ball instead of letting the goalie have
possession of it.
d) On Free Kicks, try to use the curve on the kick, as it can often fake out
the goalie, increasing the chance of scoring the kick.
e) When an opponent is bringing the ball towards your goal, try to stay
between them and the net. As soon as they begin to cut, try to steal
the ball away, as the change in direction is when they are the most
vulnerable to a feint.
f) Set tactics before starting a game. If you are a more skilled defender,
then setting the tactics to a 4-4-2 or a 5-3-2 will allow compensation
for your lackluster offensive skills. If you can score at will but
defend poorly, go with a 4-2-4 to help with the defense of your goal.
If you are about the same in skill for both offense and defense, then go
with the old fashioned, tried and true 4-3-3 formation.

Another European game I did not experience as a child, it is pretty
nicely done as far as Soccer games go for the ole NES. Although it can
yield some odd results (Scotland actually winning at Soccer, anyone?), I
do suggest it for most NES enthusiasts as it can be a fun diversion,
specifically for a two player versus game.
