SECTION 1: |INTRO|
           -----

     -------------
 A: |Version Guide|
     -------------

Version 1.0: Made walkthrough and submitted it to GameFAQS.
Probably won't be any updates, but who knows what will happen.
    (08/17/02)

Version 2.0: Decided to update all my FAQs with a new Disclaimer
section as well as change the style a bit. No new information to
    report. (08/02/03)

Version 3.0: Just doing another minor update on all my FAQs that
is needing it, and adding a little bit of info. (06/19/04)

Version 4.0: Got a couple of new important tidbits of info that
    will come in handy. (01/12/06)

     --------------------
 B: |The Story Of Hydlide|
     --------------------

The story is simple. You are in the kingdom known as Fairyland,
where all is not well. It seems an evil entity known as Varalys,
has captured the princess (where have you heard this stuff
before), as well as three fairies that are hidden throughout the
land. Your job is to go throughout Fairyland, fight evil
creatures, go through underground passageways, and collect
treasures, that will help you defeat the evil wizard. All hope
lies on your wits and skills. But can you do it? Only you hold the
fate of this young warrior as he makes his journey through
    Fairyland.

     ---------------
 C: |What Is Hydlide|
     ---------------

You go around Fairyland, fighting monsters. For every monster you
kill, you'll gain Experience Points (EP). For every 100 EP, your
stats (LIFE, STR and MAGIC) gain another level. As you gain your
level ups, you'll acquire different types of magic abilities. The
game is pretty complicated, mainly on how it's played. First off
there is no "end" when you go in one direction or another, it just
keeps going (until you come across a river bank, but on the other
side is land you've already seen). So basically this is one small
world. As well as collecting EP, you also uncover some underground
areas which are full of mazes and more monsters. Not to mention
there are powerful treasures lying about, waiting to be collected.
With luck, persistance and skill you will have this game beat in
no time (which is about how long it takes to beat the game).

     ----------------------
 D: |About This Walkthrough|
     ----------------------

This walkthrough is for the game called Hydlide. It's a short RPG
game for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. This game is
pretty tough, and has been known as the worst game ever released.
I will admit this game does stink as in gameplay value, since it's
short and cuts to the chase. So why did I make a walkthrough for
it (and yes I have been asked this before a few times)? Well
pretty much, I was in between making walkthroughs, and I figured
that since this game is short, and easy to follow, why not make a
walkthrough for it. So here it is, my personal walkthrough for
    Hydlide.

SECTION 2: |WALKTHROUGH|
           -----------

     ----------------------
 A: |Before The Walkthrough|
     ----------------------

There are a couple things I would like to point out before we get
    into the actual walkthrough:

    1. When you stand around, you will regain lost HP. However,
depending on your current level, and the location you are standing
at, you will slowly lose HP, but as you raise your level, that all
changes. Keep this in mind when in battle.

    2. Save often, I can not explain this enough. You can save at any
point in the game (hit SELECT). However if you happen to get a
game over though, it will show you will have to redo the entire
game (which it normally does), but go to your Subscreens and
choose the Load option, you will be able to pick up where you last
    saved your previous game.

    C = Underground Area C
    D = Underground Area D
    1 = Cross
    2 = Pot
    3 = Fairy #1
    4 = Key

    OPEN FIELD AREA
You start this really short adventure in D-4. In this area alone,
fight as many Slimes and Kobolds as it takes to get your stats to
Level 3. After reaching Level 3, go west 2 times to B-4. There
should be a golden chest (Item A), and inside should be a Cross.
This item will become important in about 2 minutes, but that's it
(major waste!). Anyways, after getting the Cross, go east 3 times
to E-4. Drop down into the hole, and you'll be inside Underground
    Area A.

    UNDERGROUND AREA A
This is the first underground area you'll come across. Make your
way around the maze into the next room below. Watch out for the
Stirges that fly about. They are a bit tough to kill, since there
is no telling how they will fly about. Anyways, make your way to
the room below, and you will see more Stirges flying around.
You'll also see a creature walking around. This creature is known
as Vampire (this is where the Cross comes into play). He's a bit
tough, but if you kill him off, you will get a golden chest, which
has the Lamp in it. This item will be alot more important than the
Cross was. Now head back to the above world. Once there, go north
one screen to E-3, then drop down this hole. At this point it's
best to save your game, because this underground area will be
    tough to get through.

    UNDERGROUND AREA B
Now you are in the Underground Area B. This area is tougher than
Underground Area A, so be careful. This is a one room area, so
getting through shouldn't be so hard. On the other hand there are
some Wisps flying around, which is very tough. I would suggest not
even fighting them, because you will instantly lose your life if
you're not careful. Make your way around the maze, avoiding the
Wisps as much as possible. And at the other end there is a golden
chest waiting for you. Inside the chest, is the Sword. This is a
very powerful item, because it will increase your STR stats by 1
whole level (10 SP). Save the game again, and make your way back
to the Overworld, again avoiding the Wisps. Challenge them it if
you want, but I wouldn't suggest it.

     ---------------------------
 B: |Above Ground Maze/Graveyard|
     ---------------------------

(see Map for Open Field for navigation)

    ABOVE GROUND MAZE
From D-5, go north twice, then west twice more, and finally south.
This will lead you to the entrance of the maze. Kill as many
Ropers as it takes to get to Level 4, then after that, go into the
maze. Save here if you have fear of not making it through. Make
your way around till you get to the golden chest (Item C), which
has a Pot inside. Now like the Cross, this will item will have
only one use, and that is to open up a hole in the maze (you'll
see the opening right away). Go to the hole, and you will be in
    Underground Area C.

    UNDERGROUND AREA C
In this area, there is two rooms full of golden chests, but only
one of them has the item you're looking for. Search all the chests
in both rooms till you find the Key (which you'll use soon
enough). Kill a few Goldems, to get your EP started off, then make
your way back to the Above Ground Maze. You'll note that there is
another hole at the bottom of this area. Don't worry about that
hole at all, it'll lead to Section 3, which I will get to shortly.

    GRAVEYARD
Once you are back in the maze, make your way out of it. Then from
the entrance, go north once, east once more, and south twice. You
should now be in the Graveyard area. Now from here go south one
more time, you should be in C-5. Don't worry about the Zombies
quite yet, instead focus on the golden chest here (Item D). With
the Key you got from Underground Area C, use it to open the golden
chest, to get the Jewel. Now with this, go north once and you
should be in C-4. Save your progress, and fight as many Zombies as
it takes for you to get to Level 6. If you are low on health, just
go east once and let your HP regain itself, then go back and go at
it again. Once you have reached Level 6, go north 3 times, to C-2.
Drop into the hole, for it will take you to Underground Area D.

W = Tunnel leading to Lake Hydlide
x = Leads to Lake Hydlide
    D = Underground Area D
    C = Underground Area C
    1 = Fairy #2

    UNDERGROUND AREA D
You are now in Underground Area D, which is a two room area. Go to
the next room over, and kill a few Ladyams. By doing so, one will
drop the Sheild (one of the two items in this area). Now bare in
mind, the Sheild is suppose to raise your defense up, but really
it doesn't raise that much. Actually it was never measured how
much it was to increase, so I'll just say maybe a half a percent
hehe. Anyways, after getting the Sheild, go to the upper corner of
this area and go to the right. Fight as many Goldoms as it takes,
for a golden chest will appear. But be quick about it, because it
will disappear if you don't hurry. Inside the chest is the Ring,
which helps raise your HP quicker when on a feild. Now, amongst
all this running around back and forth, you'll notice another hole
in the second room. Go into this and it will take you to the Sand
    Dunes area.

THIS JUST IN!! (courtesy of JFarceur)
Now when you enter the Sand Dunes, eventually you will come across
an area where there are 4 Sand Worms. Now you need to shoot 3 or 4
of them in a row with your Wave Spell. Obviously this will not be
easy at all. But when you do it correctly, a small scene will take
place and you will get an infinite amount of HP for about 45 to 60
seconds. This is very handy, and I would say that while you are
invincible, use that to your advantage and try to build up your
EXP some. Now that that's out of the way, let us continue onwards
    with the Sand Dunes area.

    SAND DUNES
Once you exit the hole, you'll be in A-2, also known as the Sand
Dunes. From here go east twice to C-2, where you will see 4 moving
trees (yes I said moving trees, don't ask). Here lies another
captured Fairy #2 (Item E). But here's the trick, it's hiding in
one of the moving trees. How to get it, sneak up and search each
tree (keep in mind it's random for each time you play the game). A
bit of caution though, the trees does a considerable amount of
damage on you, so it's best to stay on Defend mode. Do not try to
attack them, they will instantly kill you. After you get Fairy #2,
find a safe place to replenish your HP, then save. Now head south
(from the moving trees) to C-3. Fight a couple Slimes (which you
won't get anything for), then the Slimes will turn into Hypers.
These guys are pretty formitable, so be careful. Fight as many
Hypers as you can, until you reach Level 8, then save. Now it's
    time to go swimming!

    LAKE HYDLIDE
I not sure if I'll ever make a map of Lake Hydlide, simply because
the lake itself goes around in circles, and making a map would
probably make me go in circles lol. But I'll make this as easy as
possible. From C-3, go north 2 times, then west 2 times. You'll be
in A-1. Now go through the cement area, because it will take you
into the water. The one thing you must worry about is the Eel that
lurks about in the water. If you can kill it, you'll get some EP,
but if it gets to you first, it'll surely win. From A-1 however,
go south 3 times, then east once, north once, then east once
again. Be careful of the Dragon, that paces back and forth
breathing out fire. Once you are at your destination, go onto the
shore, replenish your HP, and save.

    LEGEND:
x = Leads to Lake Hydlide
    E = Underground Area E
    1 = Ruby
    2 = Fairy #3

    ISLAND CASTLE AND FIELD
You should be at C-1, from here go south once to C-2. Here is
where the last fairy lies (Item F), but it's very hard to get it.
You'll see 2 Wizards running about, who shoot out deadly fireballs
at you. You can't kill these guys with your sword, so don't try.
Instead you have to use your Wave Magic on them. And it gets
tougher than that, you have to hit both of the Wizards in one
shot. And if that wasn't bad enough (yes more bad news), the Wave
Magic can only be used vertically. Plus (I really hate doing this)
you only have so much to work with, because the area (veritically)
is very short. It's best to stay on Defend Mode, because on Attack
Mode, you're surely to die instantly. Once you are successful in
killing both Wizards (you can breathe a sigh of relief now), Fairy
#3 will appear, then all three fairies will come out and carry you
to the Island Castle with the Dragon on it (B-2). Now you are face
to face with the Dragon. This guy is very tough, and you can't
even kill him yet. Instead, if you can get a good shot, use the
Fire Magic on the middle tree, and it will burn, then disappear,
revealing a hole leading to another underground area. Go in and
you'll be in Underground Area E.

    UNDERGROUND AREA E
You are now in Underground Area E. This is a 3 room area, with
alot of tough enemies. In this first room, make your way around
the maze, carefully dodging the Blackams, for they are tough. Now
go into the next room over to the east. In here, this is a big
room, but only with Skeletons and Blackams in it. Avoid them, and
head to room to the south. You'll notice a gravestone in the
middle of the room. Go to it and destroy it, doing so will drain
out all the water in Lake Hydlide. Now, kill off as many Skeletons
as you can, until you reach Level 9, basically maxing out your
stats. Now head back out of Underground Area E, where you will
    face the Dragon.

    ISLAND CASTLE REVISITED
You are ready to face off with the Dragon. He's very tough, for he
has 75 HP to his name. Best way to kill him is to stay on Defend
Mode. Walk into him, and he will lose some considerable amount of
damage, but then so will you. Best bet is as soon as your HP gets
low, step away from the Dragon (but stay in the same area). Let
your HP refill, and then go at it with the Dragon again. Just be
careful of the Hyper that lurks about.

    LAKE HYDLIDE REVISITED
Once you defeat the Dragon, he will give you Medicine (Item G).
This is a very helpful item, for once your HP hits zero, the
Medicine will kick into effect, refilling all of your HP back up.
The only thing is it's used once, so make sure you try not to die
before the final fight. Anyways after you kill it, go north to
B-1, then walk into the dried lake. From here go east once, then
south once. You'll see a golden chest (Item H). In here is the
final item, the Ruby. The only purpose I can think of that it has,
that it summons forth the final boss, Varalys.

    FINAL BATTLE
After getting the Ruby, save and write down the password, so you
will be ready for the final battle. Now get back to Underground
Area E, then go east one room. You'll be face to face with
Varalys, and a couple Skeletons and Blackams. I will say now that
this battle will be very tough. Varalys alone has 100 HP to his
name. Not only that you have to contend with the other enemies in
here. Use the Flash Magic on the 4 smaller enemies, and be on
Defend Mode on Varalys. Use the same technique as you did with
killing the Dragon. With enough persistance, and the Medicine, you
will be able to kill Varalys.

THIS JUST IN!! (courtesy of JFarceur)
Incase my way wasn't helpful, here is another way to defeat
Varalys. Charge Varalys while you're on Defend Mode, and you will
be able to do some damage. When you are about to hit 0 HP, go on
the Attack Mode and strike at Varalys. This will cause him to lose
lots of life, and of course you will die. Your Medicine will then
kick in, refilling your life. When that happens, go back on Defend
Mode to finish Varalys off completely.

Whichever advice you choose, you will eventually defeat Varalys.
Congradulations, you have finally beaten Hydlide, one of the
crappier yet tough games for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment
System. Watch the ending and start the game all over again if you
want. Once again, congradulations that you have beaten the game
    Hydlide!

SECTION 3: |IMPORTANT INFORMATION|
           ---------------------

     ---------
 A: |The Items|
     ---------

Here's a list of the items you will come across in Hydlide. Each
item is very important during your quest. Some can be found in
underground, some can be found above ground.

    1. Cross: Use this item against the Vampire that runs around in
    one of the underground areas.

    2. Pot: Find this item and you will uncover a hole that leads into
one of the underground areas nearby.

    3. Jewel: This really has no effect as in fighting, but it is one
of the most important items in the game.

    4. Medicine: As soon as your HP hits zero, this will instantly
refill all of your HP, but it will only work once. Be careful when
it comes to saving/loading your current game though. It will be
    helpful against fighting Varalys.

    5. Ruby: This really has no effect as in fighting, but it is one
of the most important items in the game.

    6. Lamp: This will help light the way to areas underground that
    were dark.

    7. Sword: Upon getting this, your STR level will increase by one
(10 SP), making this sword very powerful in combat.

    8. Key: Use the key on a treasure chest to receive another item.

    9. Sheild: This item is not found in a box, but once you get it,
it will increase your defense, but it doesn't show.

    10. Ring: This is a fairly useful item. When outside in the feild,
it will refill any lost HP quicker than it did before.

    11. Fairies: There are 3 Fairies lurking about. Find them all and
they will take you to the final castle to finish off the game.

     -----
 B: |Stats|
     -----

    1. Life (HP) - This shows you what your current life is at. If you
get hit you will take damage naturally, but it will slowly regain
HP when you're standing still. Once it hits zero, the game is over
however. Each time you level up, your Life Stats will increase 10
HP. This also is your Defense, so for every level up you do,
you're also increasing your Defense as well. You start off at
Level 1 and max out at Level 9.

    2. Stregnth (SP) - This shows you how strong you are, and how well
you will be able to kill your enemies. This will also make it
easier to level up in the future. Each time you level up, your
Stregnth Stats will increase 10 HP. You start off at Level 1 and
max out at Level 9. But if you get the Sword, this stat will
increase one level, maxing your Stregnth Stats to Level 10.

    3. Experience (EP) - This shows how much experience you collect
after fighting enemies. You start off with no EP, but as you
fight, it will increase. Once you hit 100 EP, your other stats
will increase one level, and your EP will reset back to zero.

    4. Magic (MP) - This shows how much magic you have, and that you
can use (See "Magic" Section for more info on spells). Once you
use any Magic, you MP will be decreased, but it will slowly regain
MP when you're standing still, even if you run out of MP. You
start off at Level 1 and max out at Level 9, but you won't be able
to use any magic until you have reached Level 2.

    5. Monster - Even monsters has stats. This shows you what monster
you're facing as well as their HP. This will come in handy when
facing them at later levels. If you are keeping track of the
monster's HP, I'd say round it to the nearest 5 HP (See "Enemies"
    for more info on monsters).

     -----
 C: |Magic|
     -----

This is a list of Magic you will get in the game. There are 5
types of Magic, and you will get them at certain levels of the
    game.

    1. Turn (20 MP) - When you use this magic, all your enemies will
spin around, and that's really about it. Very useless magic if you
ask me. Anyways this is the first magic you will get, and you'll
    receive it at Level 2.

    2. Fire (30 MP) - When you use this magic, you'll be able to shoot
a single fireball at your enemies. This is the second magic you
will get, and you'll receive it at Level 3.

    3. Ice (40 MP) - Just like the Fire Magic, you'll be able to shoot
a single ball of energy, but this time it's an iceball. This is
the third magic you'll get, and you'll receive it at Level 4.

    4. Wave (50 MP) - When you use this magic, you'll be able to shoot
out a single wave of energy at your enemies. There is a bad side,
it will only work vertically, not horizonally. This is the fourth
magic you'll get, and you'll receive it at Level 5.

    5. Flash (70 MP) - This is probably the most effective magic ever.
When you use it, you will be able to rid the whole screen of
enemies (except for a few). Unforetunely, they do come back. This
is the last magic you'll get, and you'll receive it at Level 7.

Here's a list of the monster you'll be facing in the game Hydlide.
Also listed is their HP. I made up this particular list myself,
including the HP list, and it was not easy. Each monsters HP is
rounded to the nearest 5 HP, mainly because I couldn't tell very
well what the exact amount is, so I had to count as best I could.
Here's a little thing to keep in mind of: The higher the HP a
monster has, the harder that monster will be to defeat. Atleast
that's been my experience. As for EP, this is what I know. Each
monster will give you a certain amount of EP, but as you increase
in levels, the amount of EP will drop by so much, sometimes by
half, for each level you go up. At certain levels, certain enemies
will stop giving you EP altogether. Keep all of this in mind.

    ABOVE GROUND ENEMIES:
These are enemies that are usually found above ground.

    1. Slime (5 HP): Small blue creatures that you will encounter at
    the begining of the game.

    2. Kobold (5 HP): Brown creatures that move in and out of the
    forest quickly.

    3. Wasp (5 HP): Small bugs that live in the trees. Touch a tree
and they come out in swarms.

    4. Roper (20 HP): These dark blue monsters hide outin the Above
    Ground Maze among other places.

    5. Wizard (25 HP): These are magic users, and can be found in the
later part of the game. Defeat them both for an important item.

    6. Zombie (30 HP): These are creatures that reside in the
Graveyard only. Very tough to kill.

    7. Hyper (30 HP): White versions of the Roper. These things
replace  Slimes near the end of the game. Fast and dangerous if
    you're not careful.

    8. Goblin (30 HP): White soliders that run about in the forests.
These things replace the Kobold near the end of the game.

    9. Worm (35 HP): Creatures that live in the Sand Dunes area. Very
    tough to fight, be careful.

    10. Eel (70 HP): Another tough creature. These live in the water
and can be very difficult to get through. If at all, avoid these
    things at any time.

    11. Dragon (75 HP): Probably the only "boss" of the overworld.
This is the toughest creature you will fight, but it is essential
for to beat him. Watch out for his fire breath.

    UNDERGROUND ENEMIES:
These are enemies that are usually found in underground.

    1. Stirge (10 HP): Bats that fly around at the beginning of the
game. Annoy creatures they are, and slightly difficult

    2. Goldom (20 HP): A yellow solider that you will encounter
halfway through the game. Won't be too hard to beat, if you know
    what you're doing.

    3. Wisp (20 HP): Pain in the butt! These guys are very difficult
to get through. Do your best to avoid them!

    4. Ladyam (20 HP): The only female in the game. These are similar
to the Goldom (and can be found in the same place as well), only
    they are pink.

    5. Vampire (35 HP): There's only one of these in the game. You
need to defeat him for an important item.

    6. Blackam (50 HP): These are the toughest of soliders, and can be
found in the later part of the game. They are just like other
soliders, except they are black, and it's best not to fight them,
they can be nearly impossible to defeat.

    7. Skeleton (65 HP): Creatures that reside in the final area of
the game. Difficult, but can be defeated with the right strategy.

    8. Varalys (100 HP): This is the main boss of the game. He is the
reason Fairyland is in ruin. Defeat him and you will be able to
save the kingdom as well as Princess, and beat the game.

 E: |Tips & Codes|
     ------------

    Game Genie Codes:
    1. AZKAAVZE: Boost strength, life, magic
    2. GTKAAVZA: Super boost strength, life, magic
    3. SXSGYYSA: Don't take damage from most monsters
    4. AEUEKVIA: Rapid healing
    5. AANOVZZA: Rapid magic healing

For this game I would probably use Codes 3, 4 and 5.

 C: |The Disclaimer|
     --------------

When I was going through GameFAQS Message Board, one person said
that making an FAQ for a simple/short game is great practice for
new writers. I am a new writer, and after hearing this, I realized
how true it is. This is why I made a walkthrough for Hydlide
(trust me there wouldn't be any other reason ^_^). I made
this walkthrough the best way I can and I hope it helps out in
every way possible. Now here comes the important stuff you need to
    read.

Ok, I'll make this quick and simple. This walkthrough is my work.
I've made this walkthrough, describing the game the best possible
way I can. You can use whatever info you want, so long as you give
me credit and don't alter anything. All you have to do is email me
at [email protected] if you're gonna do anything with
this walkthrough. And to show that I'm not a complete selfish
bastard, if you have something you wanna add, email me and I will
give you full credit ^_^. This walkthrough, like many others are
intended for GameFAQs ONLY. You want it on your site, well you
better start emailing me. Failure to comply with this, and I will
    be mad, among other things.
