Hoppin' Mad was a canceled NES game. The prototype was found and eventually
shared. It was actually released on Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC.
The player controls a group of bouncing balls that goes from right to left. The
balls are always bouncing but you can control the speed and height of how much
you bounce. Hitting certain items will give you points towards your high score
while some will damage you. Your goal is to collect ten balloons without dying.

The following obstacles should be avoided at all costs, they will hurt you:

  * Venus Fly Traps
  * Birds
  * Bees
  * Mice
  * Kites

If you hit any of the above obstacles. You will lose a ball. You will actually
lose the ball that hits the obstacle so if one of the middle balls hits an
obstactle and and outter ball doesn't, it will just be the middle ball that
pops. You will see hearts floating around. This will make whichever ball
touches the heart flashes white and red. This means that ball can take one
extra hit without popping. Hearts will not give you any points.

The following items can be collected for points:

    Item           Points

  * Apple        -  50
  * Snail        - 100
  * Hat          - 100
  * Balloon      - 250

The HUD is pretty simplistic. Everything is on the top of the screen. The first
piece of information on the HUD is your score. It says PLAYER-1 and your score
is directly below it. Oddly enough, the game is only one player but it was
canceled and this is a prototype so they were probably planning on having a 2
player mode.

The next thing on the HUD is a number next to a single red ball. This is how
many lives you have. Once all your balls pop from taking damage, you will start
the level over and use one of your lives.

The next piece of information is the high score. This is pretty self
explanatory, it's the highest score you have gotten this session. It is by
default set to 50,000. That is actually really hard to reach and will probably
take you until level 15 to reach.

The balloon counter is next on the HUD. As I mentioned earlier, you need ten
balloons to complete each level. This will tell you how many balloons you have
collected so far in the level. The last balloon will be flashing to indicate
that it's the final balloon required to complete a level.

The last piece of information is the level timer. It starts at 999 and counts
down very quickly. You should probably just ignore it because taking your eye
off the screen for even a second could spell disaster. Just be mindful that a
timer does exist and be eager to grab every balloon you can that is safe.

There is no end to this. Once you complete level 3, the counter keeps going up
but it's the same three levels. There really isn't a difference between levels
aside from the background. Even the same obstacles will appear across every
level, although sometimes they are in a different color. The one thing that is
noticeably different that affects gameplay is the second level, you will see a
man with a hat walking behind the brick wall. You can hit his hat upwards for a
bonus 100 points. You will know when you hit it right because the hat will fly
up into the air and drop down, that's when you get the indicator for 100
points.

Now that you know how the game works, here are some strategies you can follow
to be more successful in this game:

* Avoiding Damage

Taking damage is incredibly easy in this game and your main focus should be to
avoid it. I would suggest this to be a focus even before collecting balloons.
You will collect balloons throughout the game, but you shouldn't collect them
at all costs. Play it smart. If there's a balloon floating in the air and a
bird right next to it, just avoid it. It's not worth taking the damage to
collect it.

* Collect Hearts

In the same vein as avoiding damage, you want to collect as many hearts as
possible. It's hard to avoid all damage throughout this game, but collecting
hearts will give you that buffer to make mistakes.

* Don't Worry About Points

If you see an apple in a tree, don't feel inclined to grab it. Your score will
keep accumulating until you lose all your lives. You can play it smart and
marathon for a high score than trying to collect every possible item.
Collecting every possible item will surely lead to damage and could lead to an
early game over.

* Go Slow

Maintain a slow pace so you have time to adjust to any obstacles. You can even
hold A or B to bounce higher as well to give yourself more time to adjust. Some
obstacles seem to spawn based on your height and if you don't ever bounce
higher, they will spawn lower making them harder to avoid.

* Adjust Properly

You really want to learn how to adjust properly to obstacles. If you go slow,
wait until an obstacle is in the middle of the screen before speeding up to
avoid it. Speeding up will obviously make any obstacles further ahead approach
much faster. The problem is the screen also moves faster so you won't be able
to plan accordingly for any future threats. Adjust as late as you feel
comfortable to keep yourself safe on the other side of the obstacle.

me? Well you could e-mail me at [email protected] and tell me what you
think! You could tell me whatever you'd like about the game whether it's a tip
not listed in this guide that you think would help a lot of people, a mistake I
made, or just a simple thanks. I will try to get back to you as quickly as
possible answering any questions you may have. Just make sure to include
something about Hoppin' Mad in the subject of the e-mail or I will delete it.
Please don't send any attachments or I will immediately delete the e-mail
without opening it. I have recently received a virus through an e-mail and was
forced to reformat and I'm not going to go through that again.

Things/How to E-Mail me about:
-What you think about this guide.
-If you need any additional help or clarification.
-Some tips for maps or strategies that aren't in this guide.
-Anything you think would be a good addition to this guide.
-Make sure your subject indicates you're trying to contact me about this game.
-Just a simple thanks!

Things/How NOT to E-Mail me about:
