Hokuto no Ken 4 is the fourth and final installment of the Fist of the
North Star series for the NES/Famicom. It takes place after the original
manga/anime series ends. Instead of controlling Kenshiro, you are a new
character who lives in the post-apocolyptic world and becomes a new successor
to the Hokuto Shinken kung fu ability. Your journey is composed of fighting
the masters of rival kung fu styles Nanto Seiken, Ura Nanto Seiken, and Gento
Ryuken. You are also on a quest to find the missing Kenshiro. Along the way,
there are several references to characters from the original series (most of
whom are dead, so you'll see a lot of graves). Some characters are decendants
of characters from the original series, and eventually you will meet some of
the still living characters.
This game is a Dragon Quest style RPG and is very similar to its
predecessor, Hokuto no Ken 3. It's a pretty low quality game, unfortunately.
And unlike its predecessor, this game lacks the beautiful character artwork
that was seen during battles. It also lacks the appeal of being a Fist of the
North Star game since you almost never see any of the characters you might be
familiar with from the original series. Worst of all, the game is very slow
and tedious to work through, with very slow level building progress, and a
high encounter rate. The only improvement in this game, at least in my
opinion, is that the enemy boss' bodies explode when you defeat them, like
they often do in the manga.
If you're anything like me, then none of that preamble matters. It's an
NES game, and therefore you must beat it! So hopefully this guide will help
you through the difficult parts and provide you with enough information to
grope through it, even if you can't understand Japanese. It was only released
in Japan, afterall, and there has been no translation available as of the
time this FAQ was written.

Nuclear war has left the Earth a desolate wasteland. Almost all living
things have perished, leaving behind only a small percentage of humanity. The
strong prey on the weak, taking what they want with no recourse.
Kenshiro was the main character in the original Fist of the North Star
manga/anime series. He wandered the world protecting the weak and improving
his skills in the kung fu style known as Hokuto Shinken. Along his travels,
he faced other masters of Hokuto Shinken and masters of a rival kung fu style
called Nanto Seiken.
This game takes place after the events of the manga series. You are a
young martial artist who lives in a small village in the post-apocolyptic
era. Kenshiro is missing, and many villages are suffering from attacks by
thugs. Your village is attacked and your mother is fatally wounded. As she's
about to die, she says that you aren't really her son, but she dies before
she's able to elaborate. You vow to become stronger to prevent this sort of
thing from happening again.
Shortly, you will inherit the Hokuto Shinken ability. Throughout the
game, you will face masters of two other styles, the Ura Nanto Seiken style,
and the Gento Ryuken style. Your goal is to find Kenshiro and destroy those
who make the innocent suffer.

---Aura Skills-----------------------------------------------------[sec2a]---
The "magic" of this game is called おうぎ, which are special kung fu skills.
To use these skills, you must spend OP ("Aura Points"), yes the "O" is weird,
but "Aura" in Japanese starts with an "O".

The skills are divided into three subcategories:
ごうけん - Attack skills that deal damage.
じゅうけん - Skills that decrease the statistics of the enemy. A few boost
your party's abilities.
ひこう - Healing skills and skills that boost your party's abilities. Some
can be used outside of battle.

Characters learn new skills when they level up. A character's mastery of a
particular skill is indicated by the number of stars shown next to it on the
status menu. Three stars means they have completely mastered the skill. The
mastery level of skills increases as characters level up (using the skill has
nothing to do with mastering it).

---Escaping Battle-------------------------------------------------[sec2b]---
I wanted to explain a few observations I noticed about running from battles
in this game. Running seems to be greatly affected by the number of enemies
you are trying to run away from. If the enemy has less characters than you
during a battle, it seems that you can always run away. For example, if you
have four people in your party and you engage in a random encounter against 3
enemies, you can run away with 100% chance of success.

If the enemy has the same number of characters as you, you can usually run
away, but there's a chance you will fail. If you fail, all of the enemies get
a turn to act. Trying to run on subsequent turns during a battle in which you
failed to escape rarely works. So basically, if you fail to run, don't try to
run again because you will probably fail again several times. It is not
impossible to run away on a subsequent attempt, but the odds are against you.

If the enemy has more characters than you, you shouldn't ever try to run. It
is very unlikely to work.

---Death in the Party----------------------------------------------[sec3c]---
If your main character dies, you automatically get a game over. However, you
will keep all of your items and experience. You will lose half of your money
and be returned to the last place at which you saved your game.

If one of your other party members dies, you have to go to the building in
which you save your game in order to revive them. This is the building with a
sign that looks like crossed spears. Select the option そせいこう
("Rebirth"), then select the dead party member. There is a modest fee as
well.

---Status Ailments-------------------------------------------------[sec3d]---
There are very few status ailments in this game. They are:
まひ - "Paralysis".
ねてる - "Sleep".
どく - "Poison".

Oddly, these status ailments all have the same effect. A character inflicted
with one of them won't be able to act for a few turns (it seems weird, but
even the poison ailment has this effect). After a few turns, the ailment will
automatically go away, but you can also remove it with an item or aura skill.
The ailments automatically go away when the battle ends.

---Other Notes-----------------------------------------------------[sec3e]---
There are just a couple other things to mention about how this game works:

There is no re-targetting during battle. This means that, if two characters
select the same enemy to attack, and the first character kills the enemy, the
second character won't automatically attack a different enemy. He will just
lose his chance to act during that turn.

Experience is divided amongst your party members. That means, if it says you
gained 1000 experience after a battle, and you have 4 characters in your
party, they each get 250 experience. As a result, if you have less characters
in your party, each character gets more experience per fight.

---Walking Menu----------------------------------------------------[sec3a]---
While walking around, press "A" to see the following menu options:
はなす   ひこう
どうぐ   しらべる
つよさ   たいれつ
そうび   いどう

The translations and uses of these options are described below:
はなす - "Talk". Speak to people you are facing.
どうぐ - "Tools". Shows your inventory.
つよさ - "Strength". Shows the status menus of your characters.
そうび - "Equipment". Change the equipment of your characters.
ひこう - "Hikou". Use aura skills (like spells in this game).
しらべる - "Search". Search for items or open treasure chests.
たいれつ - "Formation". Change the order of characters in your party. The
front two members are attacked more often than the back two.
いどう - "Migrate". Warp to villages you have already visited. You need to
find the horse before this option is available.

---Status Menu-----------------------------------------------------[sec3b]---
When you select "Strength" from the walking menu, you will see the following
statistics displayed for the selected character:
こうげきりょく - "Attack strength"
しゅびりょく - "Defensive strength"
すばやさ - "Speed"
けいけんち - "Experience"
めいちゅうりつ - "Accuracy"
かなしみ - "Sadness". Boosts the power of your aura skills.
いかり - "Anger". Boosts the power of your aura skills.
つぎのレベル - "Next level". Experience needed to level up.

If you press "A" on a character, you will open another window to see the
equipment they are equipped with. Press "A" a second time to see the aura
skills that character has learned and their mastery level (number of stars
indicates mastery, 3 is the maximum). Press "A" again to see more aura skills
if the character knows more than could fit in the first display.

---Battle Menu-----------------------------------------------------[sec3c]---
During battle, you will see the following menu options:
こうげき - "Attack". Regular physical attack.
おうぎ - "Ougi". Use aura skills.
どうぐ - "Tools". Use items in your inventory.
にげる - "Run". Escape from battle. Only the first character to act can use
        this option.
ぼうぎょ - "Defend". The first character to act cannot use this option.

---Maleid (マレード) Village---------------------------------------[sec4a]---
You begin the game in Maleid Village. Talking to villagers, you learn that a
Hokuto Shinken successor has appeared in the village to the North. So getting
to that village is your first goal. But you'll have to get stronger first to
make it there.

Talk to everybody in town, then talk to the person at the bottom of the
screen and he will let you go outside the village. Buy the Leather Clothes,
the Cloth Shoes, and the Iron Staff, and equip them. Level build on the world
map near town until you're at least level 3. Then, buy some Medicine to
prepare for your trip to the city to the North.

Go North to find the village of Monpasa.

---Monpasa (モンパサ) Village------------------------------------------------
In the Southeast corner of Monpasa, you can visit Toki's grave. By talking to
villagers, you hear that Dekan came to this town. You also hear that the
basement of the building where you save your game (it has the crossed spear
looking sign on the outside) is where Kenshiro, Toki, Jagi, and Raou trained.
You also hear the Shuken Cave is to the North. You can get the Leather Shoes
here as an equipment upgrade. (Note: from now on, I won't tell you when to
buy equipment. Just use the "Shops" and "Equipment" sections of this guide to
see what equipment each character can get at a new location.)

If you try to go to the cave to the North right now, you'll find nothing but
a locked door, so put this off for now.

Enter the castle at the top town. This is your first dungeon. Although the
enemies aren't very hard, it can be hard to get very far because they will
wear you down with a high random encounter rate. Bring Medicine to help you
get farther.

There are a few things to note here about dungeons in this game:
(1) The layout is almost always the same in these castles. On odd numbered
floors, there are stairs going up in all the four corners of the room. On
even numbered floors, there are stairs going up in the center of the room.

(2) Almost all treasure chests are empty or contain a boring item. It is rare
to find a valuable piece of equipment.

(3) Every castle has a throne room. The layout is always the same. The throne
or other important event item will be located at the top-middle portion of
the screen.

Because of the first two points mentioned above, exploring dungeons is
discouraged in this game. You simply want to quickly get to the end as fast
as possible before your resources are drained.

Since odd numbered floors have stairs going up in all four corners, you can
pretty much go up whichever staircase you want. There are only one or two
times where you have to go up a specific staircase, and I'll point those out
at the correct time. Otherwise, when I say "go up the lower-right staircase",
you can probably actually go up any staircase you want. I'll still pick a
specific one, because it's the one I used and therefore I know for sure it
will take you along the right path.

Here are the directions, floor-by-floor, through the castle:
1F: Go up the lower-right staircase.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the screen.
3F: Go up the lower-left staircase.
4F: This is the throne room. head to the top-center of the screen to find a
guy on the throne. Talk to him and learn that he is Dekan (デカン). He claims
to be a Hokuto Shinken master trained by Jagi. He then attacks you. He, like
almost all other bosses, has three henchman that aid him in the battle. I
easily won this battle with my character at level 4 when I started with full
life and without carrying any Medicine.

When you win, Dekan explodes. There are stairs that were under him, so go
down. You'll find some chests, one which contains the Cave Key
(どうくつのカギ). Step on the magic tile at the back of the room to warp back
to town. Those tiles always warp you out of the dungeon.

After resting and saving, exit to the world map and go North to the cave.

---Shuken Cave---------------------------------------------------------------
The staff of Shuken lies in this cave. Go to the door inside and use the Cave
Key. Open the chest to get Shuken's Staff (シュケンのつえ).

Return to town and go downstairs in the building where you can save your game
(the sign outside looks like crossed spears). Stand on the suspicious looking
tile and use Shuken's Staff. You will hear Ryuken's voice, the guy who taught
Kenshiro and his adopted brothers the art of Hokuto Shinken. He says Hokuto
Shinken is to be passed onto you. He tells you your trials will be long and
difficult and to seek Kenshiro.

At the town entrance, a woman blocks your exit. Talk to her and she says
Kazemaru is seeking a Hokuto Shinken successor.

Return to Maleid Village and talk to a guy wandering around in the center of
town, dressed in white. His name is Kazemaru (かぜまる) and he is excited to
meet the person that inherited the Hokuto Shinken abilities and offers you
his services, joining your party. He needs better equipment, so go back to
Monpasa to get him some upgrades, then return to Maleid again. A girl at the
top side of town says that the Soldiers of the Death God (しにがみたい), as
they call themselves, are hastling her dad and he needs help.

Go up into the tent at the top of town and fight the Soldiers of the Death
God. It's a very easy fight, especially if you use the new Hokuto Shinken
skills you acquired. The girl thanks you and opens a path for you to exit
the village via the North end. Back on the world map, on the North side of
Maleid, follow the path to the East and look for an opening in the mountains
leading to the village of Greenshia.

---Greenshia (グリンシア) Village----------------------------------[sec4b]---
In Greenshia, go to the top of the screen, through trees. A guy runs up to
you and says something about a cave to the North and some stolen swords that
are sacred to this village. Exit town via the North end of the screen and you
will appear on the world map North of Greenshia. Go North to enter a cave.

---Greenshia Cave------------------------------------------------------------
On the first floor, you will find a locked door. You can't open it now, but
keep it in mind for later. Move on to the stairs. On the second floor, head
to the Southeast corner of the room, then take the passage North to find an
enemy blocking your path. He is one of the 3 Soldiers of the Death God, named
Red (レッド). He is easy to defeat with just regular attacks, but you can use
ひゃくれつけん to take out his group of underlings in one turn to make things
go by faster. I was at level 5 when I defeated him. You can use Kazemaru's
item Yashaguruma (やしゃぐるま) to escape from this (and any other) dungeon
if your HP and/or OP are low. If you're ready to continue on, go upstairs.

On the third floor, go up the stairs on the left side of the screen.

On the fourth floor, make your way to the right side of the screen to find an
enemy blocking your path. He is one of the 3 Soldiers of the Death God, named
White (ホワイト). This fight is similar to the Red fight and quite easy. When
you win, open the chests to get the White Fox Sword (びゃっこのけん) and the
Sekija Sword (せきじゃのけん). Go up the stairs to find more chests, this
time containing Medicine and a letter. You read the letter, which says they
plan on killing the village elder. Step on the magic symbol to return to the
world map.

Return to Greenshia and enter the house in the Northwest end of town. Inside,
the village elder is being hastled by one of the Soldiers of the Death God,
named Blue (ブルー). This was an easy fight for me with my main character at
level 6. I used the skill じゅうはざん to deal more damage.

When you win, Blue gives you the third stolen sword in exchange for his life.
You give the other two swords to the elder, who thanks you. The elder says he
can fortell the location of Kenshiro for you. The fortune is simply: "South
Cave". When you step outside of the house there is an earthquake. On the
world map, there is now an opening through mountains to the South.

Go South quite a ways to find a cave. Inside, you meet a guy that says
Kenshiro was here not long ago, but he went to the Crystal Palace. This guy
will restore your HP and OP any time you visit him in this cave. Continue
through the cave to exit on the world map in a new location.

Go South to the city Bahamon.

---Bahamon (バハモン) Village------------------------------------------------
At the entrance, you see a guy named Ryuudo (リュード) who has the seven
Hokuto scars on him, indicating he can use the Hokuto Shinken fighting style.
He is fighting some thugs whom you see him defeat. He joins your party to
help you find Kenshiro.

A guy at the top end of town tells you to go to Legend Village to find
Kenshiro.

Exit to the world map and head to Legend Village. It is located far to the
West.

---Legend (レジェンダ) Village-----------------------------------------------
In Legend, you can find a grave in the Northwest section of the screen, on
the other side of the city wall. Search it to find the Seed Rice (たねもみ).
You can use this to fully restore your OP.

You hear that there is a strong guy in the cave to the Southwest. So exit to
the world map and head Southwest to find a cave.

---Legend Cave---------------------------------------------------------------
If Ryuudo has not joined your party yet, a guy at the entrance of the cave
won't let you pass. If Ryuudo is in your party, you can enter the cave. Make
your way through the cave and you will eventually find a horse blocking your
path. This was Raoh's horse. Talk to it to claim it as yours and you will
then get a new menu option いどう ("Migrate"), which you can use to instantly
warp to any village you've already visited. You can only use the "Migrate"
command when you are on the world map or in a village.

Continue on through the cave and you will meet a traveling merchant. He
offers you a treasure, but when you search it you fall into a pit, which
takes you to the inside of a prison.

---Ghosdoom (ゴズデーュム) Prison--------------------------------------------
Some prisoners here tell you that you are in an area controlled by Brahm
(バラム). They say the prison warden, Domel (ドーメル), dresses in disguise
as a traveling merchant.

You can use Kazemaru's item Yashaguruma to escape anytime you want to return
to the previous cities. This prison is sort of a maze, and this is pretty
much the only time you need to follow specific directions to get to the end.

Go through the door farthest to the right since it is unlocked. Before going
up the stairs, open a treasure chest directly below the stairs to get the
Aura Source (オーラのみなもと), which will restore a significant amount of OP
to a character. Go upstairs to the second floor and find the stairs going up
in the lower-left corner of the room.

On the third floor, go up the stairs near the center of the room. On the
fourth floor, go up to come across a guy blocking your path. It's the guy who
dressed as a traveling merchant previously (the prison warden). Talk to him
to start a battle. His name is Domel (ドーメル) and he was easy for me to
defeat at level 9. I used せんじゅかいけん to quickly wipe out his
underlings. After you win, exit the screen via the South side and you will
appear on the world map.

On the world map, the nearby cave will return you to the Legend Cave, which
you don't need. Instead, go South to find the village of Suichou.

---Suichou (スイチョウ) Village------------------------------------[sec4c]---
There's not much for you here at this time other than to rest and save. The
cave next to the village has a guy blocking your path inside, so ignore it
for now.

Go directly West from town, over the desert quite a ways, to find Purebledge
Village.

---Purebledge (ピュアビレッジ) Village---------------------------------------
In Purebledge, search the grave near the entrance, surrounded by water, to
find a Seseragi's Eye (せせらぎのみ), which restores HP.

By talking to villagers, you hear that Brahm's castle is to the South but
that it is locked and you need a key. You hear that Gadora Dam is to the
North.

Back outside on the world map, head North quite a ways to find Gadora Dam.

---Gadora Dam (ガドラの ダム)------------------------------------------------
Go to the top of the screen. A kid there says you need someone to break the
rocks here to open the dam and mentions Ain.

Go inside the castle and use the following directions to reach the top:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
4F: This is the throne room. Head to the throne to find Gadora (ガドラ). Talk
to him to begin a battle. If Ryuudo is at level 11 or higher, he will have
learned しちしせいてん, which is powerful for attacking a single enemy and
can be helpful. This should be a fairly easy fight.

When you win, go down the stairs that were under him. In a chest here, you
get Brahm's Key (バラムのカギ), which will open the door to Brahm's castle.

"Migrate" back to Purebledge, then go South on the world map quite a ways to
find Brahm's Castle.

---Brahm's (バラム) Castle---------------------------------------------------
Inside, use Brahm's Key to open the door at the entrance. Use the following
directions to reach the top:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
4F: Head to the center of the room, where someone is blocking the entrance to
the throne room. Talk to him and he disappears (he just died from wounds
inflicted by Brahm). Go up to the throne and speak to the guy there to engage
in a boss battle with Brahm (バラム). He is the first of the 6 Ura Nanto
masters that you will face. I was at level 11 and used my strongest aura
skills to attack, and it was very easy.

When you win, you ask him where the Crystal Palace is, but he explodes before
he finishes his response. Go down the stairs that were under him. In a chest,
you find Ain's Glove (アインのてぶくろ).

Return to Gadora Dam, North of Purebledge. Equip your main character with
Ain's Glove. Go up to the castle at the top of the screen. In between the two
doors are a pair of tiles you can stand on. Stand on one of those tiles and
face up like you're about to punch the castle. Then "use" Ain's Glove. The
dam will be opened and water will flow. Re-equip your main character with
another weapon.

Go back to ピュアビレッジ Village. Talk to a lady at the entrance who
disappears, and talk to a lady in the house in front of the armor shop. You
deliver the news that her lover died. A townsperson here tells you to go to
Suichou, so "Migrate" to Suichou.

A guy is blocking the entrance to the house in the upper-right part of town.
Talk to him and he says someone attacked the village, then he dies and
disappears. A Nanto user, Rugyi (ルギー), appears. He thinks you attacked the
village and attacks you for revenge. It's a very easy battle. After you win,
a woman appears and says she saw the attacker. It was Zawara (ザワラ), a
henchman of the Ura Nanto user Meld. She says they went to the East. You and
Rugyi decide to team-up and he joins your group to go after the villains.
First, "Migrate" to Purebledge Village to deck Rugyi out in some nicer
equipment.

Go in the cave next to Suichou. With Rugyi in your party, the guard will now
let you pass through the cave. In the chest in the lower-right of the cave,
you get the Shinobi Shoulderpads (しのびのかたあて). Exit the cave via the
upper-right corner of the screen. When you emerge back on the world map, go
East, and then a little South to find Zawara's Castle.

---Zawara's (ザワラ) Castle--------------------------------------------------
Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
4F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
5F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Head to the throne to find Zawara (ザワラ) Talk
to him to begin a battle. This was an easy battle for me at level 12.

When you win, go down the stairs that were under him. In the chests, you get
some crappy prizes. When you step on the magic tile to warp back outside, you
are now standing behind Zawara's Castle, with newly accessible land to the
West. Warning: do not go back in the castle or you will have to traverse the
whole thing again to get back to this reverse side of the castle.

Head Southwest, staying along the water, to find a town on a river, called
Cross Town (クロスタウン).

---Cross Town (クロスタウン)---------------------------------------[sec4d]---
Enter the fortune teller's house in the upper-left corner of town. Talk to
the fortune teller behind the desk who says something about each of you, then
says Ryuudo's power is way too strong. Some enemies arrive and you engage in
a battle. All of your party members are poisoned but Ryuudo, making it so
they can't act. Controlling Ryuudo, use せんじゅかいけん to quickly
exterminate the enemy. After the battle, talk to everyone in this house and
they disappear, I guess cause they're dying.

In the house in the upper-right corner of town, you see a guy named Jingi
kicking some butt in a colosseum style setting. Continue through the building
to the left exit. Enter the next door and inside you will be able to talk to
Jingi who says his sister Mamil is being held prisoner by Meld and forcing
him to fight these colosseum battles for entertainment. Continue through the
door at the top of the screen. Enter the castle you see.

In the castle, use the following directions to reach the top:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
4F: This is the throne room. Go to the throne to battle Gyobe (ギョーブ),
another easy battle. Go down the stairs on the throne to find a Souke
Medicine (そうけのひやく) in a chest.

Return to town, then exit the village via an exit in the upper-left end of
the screen. Back on the world map, you will see a cave nearby. Pass through
that cave to appear on the world map in a new area. Go South to find South
Baas Village.

---South Baas (サウスバース) Village-----------------------------------------
In South Baas, in the Northwest corner of the screen, on the outside of the
city wall, is a grave. Search it to find Pero's Long Boots (ぺろのながぐつ).

Back outside on the world map, head way South to find Meld's Castle.

---Meld's (メルド) Castle----------------------------------------------------
Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-left corner.
4F: This is the throne room. Head to the throne to battle Garcia (ガルシア).
It was an easy fight for me at level 14.

After winning, go down the stairs that were under Garcia. An old man named
Gorin (ゴリン) from South Baas was a prisoner here. There are just a couple
Medicines in the chests here. Instead of going upstairs to battle Meld,
return to South Baas first.

In South Baas, step on Rei's grave in the middle of town and Rugyi learns the
aura skill だんこそうさいけん.

Return to Meld's Castle. Go back up to the room where you found the doctor
after defeating Garcia. From there, go up any of the stairs and you'll be in
another throne room. Go to the throne to battle Meld (メルド), the second Ura
Nanto master. His attacks are a lot stronger than the previous bosses you've
faced. Use strong attacks, but conserve 80 OP for Rugyi for later in the
battle. At some point, Meld uses a skill called せきじゃけん, at which point
you will always miss him. At that time, use Rugyi's skill だんこそうさいけん.
It takes him several turns to charge it up to use it and he can take no
actions while he is charging. In the meantime, do your best to keep your main
character and Rugyi alive, and don't bother attacking since you'll just miss,
but just defend or heal with your characters until Rugyi unleashes his
deathblow.

After you win, Rugyi leaves your party. Go down the stair on the throne. In
the chests, you'll just find a Souke Medicine, but there is also a woman
there who is Jingi's  sister. Talk to her and you've saved her.

"Migrate" to Cross Town and go to the colosseum type building in the upper-
right corner of town and make your way to the left side of it to talk to
Jingi. He thanks you for saving his sister and now joins your party.

Go back into the main part of town and talk to the villagers and you hear
that Hanja took all the women in town and headed toward Purebredge.

"Migrate" to Purebredge (ピュアビレッジ) and talk to people to find out that
the women are missing from there as well. Go into the house below the armor
shop and you'll find one of Hanja's henchman, named Deras (デラス) who you
must fight, but it's an easy battle.

When you win, talk to the lady in the house. She says Hanja's group went to
Greenshia.

"Migrate" back to Greenshia (グリーンシア). Talk to the guy in the upper-
right house to hear that Hanja's group went to the back mountain, and a bomb
opened a new passage. Exit town via the North side and head North to the cave
in the mountain.

---Greenshia Cave Revisited--------------------------------------------------
In the cave, go all the way right, and you might remember there was a door in
front of the far right passage. Now it's gone and you can go through. Go up
the passage and go down the stairs.

On the next floor, you will come across 3 enemies blocking your path. They
are the 3 Soldiers of the Death God from before, but now you fight all 3 at
once. It's a pretty easy fight. Don't step on the magic symbol unless you
want to exit the dungeon. Instead continue to the right and go down the
stairs. You find the kidnapped women here. You can talk to them through the
doors, but you can't free them just yet. Go down the stairs in the lower-left
part of this room. Down the passage are four stairs going up. It doesn't
matter which one you take. You'll enter a throne room. Make your way to the
throne to battle one of Hanja's henchmen, name Regim (レギム). He can do an
attack that damages your whole group for 80ish damage, so he can be pretty
tough. I don't have any special tactics to tell you to make it easier, just
use Kazemaru to heal, with your main character as the priority, and use
strong skills to attack to take out his henchmen quickly, and then focus on
him. When you win, go down the stairs that were behind him.

Down the stairs, search the chests to get the Jail Key (ろうやのカギ). Return
to the room with the kidnapped women. Go down the stairs in the upper-left
corner of this room. Here, step on the weird looking tile on the left and
"use" the Jail Key. The jail cells with the women in them will be opened and
the women will be gone when you go back to that room, except for one woman.
When you try to approach her, she runs. Follow her. This is a good time to go
back and rest though if you need to.

Go down the stairs that the girl must have went down. On the next floor, head
to the lower-left corner of the room to find the girl. Talk to her. It turns
out it was Hanja (ハンジャー), the third Ura Nanto master, who you must
battle now! Attack with some strong skills, but eventually your attacks will
start missing. At that point, just defend and eventually he will run away. Go
up the stairs to chase after him.

You'll be in a throne room. Head to the throne. If you speak to the guy on
the throne, it's not Hanja, it's just a doll. Speak to the lady next to him
and that will be Hanja and another battle begins. He can do a lot of damage,
so keep Kazemaru busy with healing. I was able to beat him at level 15.

When you win, go down the stairs on the throne to find a chest containing the
Paradise Key (らくえんのカギ).

Return to the room where you fought Hanja for the first time. There were four
stairs going up, but behind them was a locked door. Use the Paradise Key to
open that door. You emerge on the world map in a new area. Go South and then
East to find the village of Ebelia.

---Ebelia (イベリア) Village---------------------------------------[sec4e]---
Talking to the villagers, you hear that the Red Scorpion controls this town.
It turns out, he's the one that attacked your hometown and killed your mom.

Enter the castle at the top of the screen and use the following directions to
get to the top:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
4F: This is the throne room. Head to the throne to battle the Red Scorpion
(あかサソリ). This battle is pretty easy.

After you win, go down the stairs, then step on the magic tile. You'll be
back on world map, behind the city, making a new area accessible. Go East to
find the town of Deathrolens.

---Deathrolens (デスロレンス) Village----------------------------------------
At the top end of town is a bad guy named Regan (レガン). Talk to him to
initiate a battle. I was at level 17 when I defeated him, but it seems like
the battles have gotten harder, doesn't it?

Talking to villagers, you hear Galg's (ガルグ) Castle is to the South.

Exit town to the world map and head South, then West to find Galg Town
(ガルグタウン).

---Galg Town (ガルグタウン)--------------------------------------------------
Enter the castle at the top end of town.

Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
4F: On this floor is a room with white floors guarded by one of Galg's
henchman, named Belshida (ベルシダ). Talk to him to begin a battle. I was
able to win at level 19.

When you win, talk to the old guy that's in the white room. He says you can't
defeat Galg without Souther's fist. Ignore his warning and go up to the next
floor.

5F: Go Southwest to find a chest containing Shuu's Boots (シュウのブーツ). Go
up the stairs in the upper-left corner of the room.
6F: This is the throne room. Head to the throne to begin a one-on-one battle
with Galg (ガルグ), the fourth Ura Nanto master. You are supposed to lose
this battle, so don't worry.

After losing, go talk to the guy in the lower-left building of Galg Town (the
one with the boat outside of it). He will now let you use the boat. If you
don't lose to Galg, then you won't be able to use the boat. It automatically
takes you to a Southwestern island. When you disembark from the boat, enter
the nearby town of Southers.

---Southers (サウザス) Village-----------------------------------------------
In Southers, you hear that Delmon is one of the Ura Nanto masters and he
controls this village. Unlike the other Ura Nanto users, he is a nice person.
You are told that he is in a pyramid to the South.

Exit to the world map and head Southwest to some pyramids. Enter the top
pyramid, where there are no random encounters. Make your way to the second
floor and go to the top-middle of the room to find a monument to Shuu. Shuu's
spirit talks to Jingi through the monument.

Back on the world map, go to the bottom, larger pyramid and talk to the guy
blocking the entrance. It's Delmon (デルモン), the fifth Ura Nanto user, who
is supposedly nice. He decides to put Jingi through a test to enter the
pyramid. He must defeat 10 warriors alone. This is done in three successive
(easy) battles versus four enemies, then four again, then two. Use
れっきゃくざんじん to wipe out an enemy group in one turn. After winning, it
turns out this was a trap. Delmon blinds Jingi, then runs into the pyramid
and closes the door. He's not so nice afterall.

Return to Shuu's monument in the top pyramid. Jingi learns こうめいせいは and
a passage appears. Follow along the passage and you will eventually meet up
with Delmon. Jingi fights him one-on-one. It's very easy. Use こうめいせいは
for big damage. After winning, Jingi dies and your main character learns
むそうてんせい, which is a great ability. It increases your character's
evasion, which is very necessary to have any chance of beating the later
bosses in the game.

Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner of the room. The next floor is the
same layout as a throne room. Go to the top-middle of the room, where the
throne would usually be, and you'll find Souther's remains. Stand on the
discolored tile to hear Souther's voice. Your main character learns
てんしょうほうけん. Someone named Kain (カイン) appears, wanting to help
destroy Galg (ガルグ), and joins your party. He has the まもる ("Protect")
command instead of おうぎ (aura skills), which will allow him to defend other
members in your party and focus damage onto him instead.

"Migrate" to Galg Town (ガルグタウン) and climb up the castle again to reach
Galg (ガルグ). Challenge him to battle and use てんしょうほうけん to attack
him. After two turns he should die. I was at level 21 when I beat him.

After you win, Galg says that Kain is the sixth Ura Nanto user before he
explodes. Go in the back room for some items, then go down the stairs on the
throne. Drop down the hole there. Ryuudo leaves your party at this point
because he refuses to travel with an Ura Nanto user.

You can exit the castle to find that you are in Deathrolens (デスロレンス),
so you can rest and save. Go back into the castle and go up the lower-right
corner stairs, then make your way to the middle-top of the room to find a guy
on a throne. He is Hiun no Shou (ひうんのしょう). He lost his memory due to
Galg (ガルグ) and he is Yuria's younger brother. You need Yuria's Pure Water
(せいすい) to restore his memory.

"Migrate" to Galg Town (ガルグタウン) and you will find the ship on the world
map, which is now available for sailing wherever you want, just walk onto it.
If you "Migrate" to a new location, the ship will come with you.

"Migrate" to Bahamon (バハモン). From there, go directly South by ship until
you arrive at land. Then go West until you find a place you can land your
ship and walk on the ground. From there, head to the West part of the island,
then a little South to find the town of Ribshoki.

---Ribshoki (リブショーキ) Village---------------------------------[sec4f]---
Talk to the villagers to learn this village is Yuria's resting place. The key
to Yuria's cemetery was stolen and the thief went North.

Enter the building in the Northeast corner of town, on the opposite side of
the city wall. Inside, you meet Raoh's son Ryuu (リュウ). He is interested in
you because of your Hokuto successorship and joins your party. He comes with
great equipment, but you have to equip it. The thief appears here. He says
he's from the Gento Ryuken (げんとりゅうけん) kung fu style and that he wants
to exterminate all users of Hokuto, Nanto, and Ura Nanto. It's a pretty easy
boss battle compared to what you've been facing recently. When you win, open
the chests in this room. One contains the Cemetery Key (ぼちのカギ).

Back in town, use the Cemetery Key to unlock the door to the red-bricked
building and enter. Go to the second floor, then search the grave to receive
Yuria's Pure Water (ユリアのせいすい).

"Migrate" to Deathrolens (デスロレンス) and enter the castle at the top of
the screen. Go to the throne room and use Yuria's Pure Water on the person
sitting on the throne, Hiun no Shou. It causes his memory to return. Kain
leaves your party, stating he will stay to protect this guy. Hiun no Shou
tells you that Kenshiro is in a valley located South of Yuria's resting
place. He gives you the Jibo Star (じぼのほし), saying it will allow you to
enter the valley.

"Migrate" to Ribshoki (リブショーキ), then go East until you run into the
mountains, then follow the path to the South until you see a giant star on
the map. Walk onto it.

---Star----------------------------------------------------------------------
Go down the stairs, then stand on the steps next to a gap and use the Jibo
Star. A bridge appears allowing you to cross the gap. Go up the stairs on the
other side and walk onto the building in the middle of the star. The person
at the entrance tells you Kenshiro sleeps in the Crystal Palace in this
valley, but the door is locked and you need a sacred treasure to open it. Lin
knows where it is. She lives in Messiah with Bat. Messiah is at the South end
of this island.

You can exit this screen now and go down the steps below the palace. Inside
use the Jibo Star to create a bridge again, then follow the path to emerge on
the world map again, South of the giant star. Follow the path to find the
village of Messiah (メサイア).

---Messiah (メサイア) Village------------------------------------------------
The villagers tell you someone using Gento Ryuken is executing people in this
village. The village leaders Lin and Bat are missing.

Enter the castle at the North end of town. You witness a thug, Dokel, about
to execute someone, but Bat shows up to stop it. You're probably quite
familiar with the floor layout. Go around the walls to get to Bat. Talk to
him and he says Lin was kidnapped by these Gento Ryuken guys. He says she was
taken to an island in the East. The guy Bat saved says the island is
unreachable with a normal ship and to speak with an inventor in Rosalia to
the East.

Go upstairs to the throne room and go down the stairs on the throne to get
Shuken's Dougi (シュケンのどうぎ).

Return to the world map, then pass through the cave next to Messiah. When you
emerge back on the world map in a new area, go North to Rosalia.

---Rosalia (ロザリア) Village------------------------------------------------
When you enter the town, you witness a guy named Missyu (ミッシュ) thrashing
some thug. He wants to defeat the Gento Ryuken and joins your party.

Talk to villagers to learn that the pirate Oupa (オウパ) controls this area.
He is in a cave to the North.

Back on the world map, go Northeast to the Pirate Cave.

---Pirate Cave---------------------------------------------------------------
In the cave, head to the lower-right corner of the screen and take the stairs
down there. On the next floor, you see a pirate nearby. Talk to him to begin
a battle with Oupa (オウパ). I was at level 23 when I defeated him, and it
wasn't too hard. When you win, he says his boat is yours and runs away. Go
down the stairs that were behind him and follow the path to get to the ship.
Board it, then sail up to emerge on the world map.

Sail directly East to find more land. You'll see what looks like a straight
you can pass through, but ignore that and just follow the coastline to the
North. You'll come across another water passage through the mountains, and
this time you should go through it, heading East. You'll see some whirlpools.
Ignore them amd continue East. The pirate Oupa will appear and attack your
ship, causing it to sink. The 3 Soldiers of the Death God will arrive with a
raft to save you. They drop you off on land North from where you had this
encounter.

On land, head East until you find some stairs. Go down them to appear in a
new area to the South. From there, head Southwest to find Madou Town.

---Madou Town (マドータウン)---------------------------------------[sec4g]---
Talk to villagers to learn this village is controlled by Asimov. Lin was
taken to his castle, which is South of this village.

Back outside on the world map, go East, then South, then Southwest to find
the village of Raflens (ラフレンス). There's nothing to do there other than
rest at the inn.

Back on the world map, go West to find Gera's Castle.

---Gera's (ゲラ) Castle------------------------------------------------------
Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-left corner.
4F: Go up the stairs toward the middle of the room.
5F: Go up the stairs toward the upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Make your way to the throne to battle the Gento
Ryuken user named Gera (ゲラ). He has a huge attack that does around 140 HP
damage, and can do over 100 HP damage to all of your party in one turn. I was
at level 25 and barely beat him on my third try. I didn't do anything special
during this fight other than use strong aura skills, but you might try using
むそうてんせい or other stat boosting skills to try to help yourself.

After you win, you'll find only crappy treasures under the throne stairs.

"Migrate" back to Raflens (ラフレンス), then enter the nearby cave. An old
man, the village elder, will now let you pass. Open the chest in the cave to
get the Hokuto Mirror (ほくとのかがみ). The stairs at the back of the cave
just take you back to the world map at the same location from which you
entered.

Go to the castle located Northeast from Raflens, Asimov's Castle.

---Asimov's Castle-----------------------------------------------------------
There is a weird looking barrier at the entrance. Walk up to it and use the
Hokuto Mirror to make it disappear. The enemies here are ridiculously strong.
I think you'll have to level build to hope to survive. Probably level 27
minimum.

Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-left corner.
4F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
5F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Approach the throne to battle Asimov (アシモフ),
a Gento Ryuken user. I won this battle at level 28.

When you win, you demand Lin's return. Asimov says she was taken to Sagan's
place, then he explodes.

Enter the cave next to Asimov's Castle. Pass through it to appear in a new
area on the world map. Follow the path and you'll come to a slide. Step on it
and you fall down to the village of Houston (ヒューストーン).

---Houston (ヒューストーン) Village------------------------------------------
Enter the castle at the top of the screen. A guy at the castle entrance will
restore your party's HP/OP when you walk by his side, which you can do
repeatedly.

Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up stairs in upper-left corner.
4F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
5F: Go up stairs in upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Approach the throne to battle Gauge (ゲージ), a
henchman of Sagan. I beat him at level 29.

After winning, Missyu learns from the henchman (before he explodes) that his
father was Falco and his mother was Myuu. He gets excited to avenge his
parents by killing Sagan, and his passion causes him to power up. Go down the
stairs on the throne where you can get Falco's Gauntlets (ファルコのこて).

When you step on the magic tile, you appear back on the world map. Houston
appears to be gone. If you try to "Migrate" to Houston, you will be standing
at this part of the world map. That means you can "Migrate" to somewhere else
right now to rest and save, then "Migrate" back to Houston when you're ready
to continue from here.

From the previous Houston location, go South to find another castle.

---Sagan's (サガン) Castle---------------------------------------------------
A guy at the entrance will restore your HP/OP whenever you visit him.

Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs at the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
4F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
5F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Approach the throne to battle Sagan (サガン). I
won this battle at level 31.

When you win, someone called Matenoh (まてんおう) appears. He says that
Hokuto, Nanto, and Gento will all perish and says he'll meet you soon, then
disappears. Go down the stairs on the throne to find a girl. When you talk to
her, it turns out she's not Lin. It's Lin's sister, Rui. She says the ruler
of this island is Matenoh. Lin was taken by Matenoh to his castle on the West
end of the island. She gives you a Treasure Fragment (ひほうのかけら), and
says Lin has the other piece.

When you return to the world map, pass through the cave to the West. On the
other side of the cave, go West to find the village Maten Land.

---Maten Land (マテンランド)---------------------------------------[sec4h]---
A villager here tells you Matenoh is a relative of the late Kaioh.

Enter the castle at the top of the screen. Use the following directions to
reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the lower-left corner.
4F: Head to the stairs in the middle of the room. A guard blocks the stairs,
named Lodos (ロドス), who you must fight. I beat him at level 32. When you
win, continue up the stairs.
5F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
6F: This is the throne room. Make your way to the throne to find Matenoh.
Talk to him to begin a one-on-one battle. Use some strong aura skills to
attack him. I like てんはかっさつ since it does a lot of damage for a low OP
cost, although there are other stronger skills that are much more expensive.
Matenoh doesn't do a whole lot of damage (around 80 HP to 100 HP), and you
should survive the fight if you begin with full HP. At some point when you've
damaged him enough he will run away. I won this battle at level 32 on my
first try, but it was pretty close.

Rest and save, remove any items you might want that Ryuu is carrying, then
"Migrate" to Renkitouza (レンキトウザ).

---Renkitouza (レンキトウザ)-------------------------------------------------
You could have migrated here a long time ago if you wanted. There wasn't much
here before except for 300 monies and a statue of Raoh that doesn't do
anything. The upper-right chest is a pit that takes you back to Shuken Cave.

This time, when you migrate here, you will hear the voice of Raoh at the cave
entrance. Ryuu suddenly turns toward you and attacks. It is a one-on-one
battle. Use むそうてんせい to make him miss during most of his attacks. Then,
use あんばくこう to increase your attack power, and finally use
てんしょうほうけん to deal a lot of damage quickly, or use てんはかっさつ
which is a little more worth the OP cost. I won at level 32. As long as you
use むそうてんせい right away, the fight should be easy.

When you defeat Ryuu, he explains that this was his father's (Raoh's) last
request. You had to defeat Ryuu in order to achieve the ultimate power. You
learn the ability てんしょうほんれつ. Rugyi appears out of nowhere and joins
your party.

"Migrate" back to Maten Town and climb the castle again to re-challenge
Matenoh. You'll probably need to be around level 35 to defeat him, however,
so more level building is necessary. Use あんばくこう to boost your attack
power, then attack with てんしょうほうけん or てんはかっさつ. Eventually, you
will miss when you attack. At that time, use てんしょうほんれつ to defeat
him.

Go down the throne stairs to find the Ryuken Gauntlets (リュウケンのこて) and
a woman. This time, the woman is Lin. She gives you the Treasure Fragment
(ひほうのかけら), so now you have two. She says you can't open the door to
the Crystal Palace unless they're combined and mentions you should visit
Monpasa.

After resting and saving, "Migrate" to Monpasa (モンパス). A kid at the
entrance says the village was attacked by Hakenoh. Go to Toki's grave in the
lower-right corner of town to find Hakenoh. Talk to him to begin a one-on-one
battle. You are supposed to lose. When you lose, you hear Toki's voice. He
fuses the Treasure Fragments into the item Hokuto Treasure (ほくとのひほう)
and you learn the skill そせいしちせいこう. Toki says to return to the
Crystal Palace to find Kenshiro.

The next battle will require you to be at level 38 or higher, so you're in
for another round of level building. When your level is high enough, or if
you're stubborn and want to challenge the boss earlier, "Migrate" to Ribshoki
(リブショーキ) and head South to the giant star. Make your way to the Crystal
Palace.

---Crystal Palace------------------------------------------------------------
While facing the Crystal Palace, "Use" the Hokuto Treasure to make the
entrance open. When you enter the palace, Hakenoh appears. Kazemaru stays
back to hold him off while you go ahead.

There are no enemies in the Crystal Palace. Go to the second floor and head
to the top-middle to find the sleeping Kenshiro. Use そせいしちせいこう to
awaken him. Don't talk to him without restoring your HP/OP to maximum first.
Then, talk to him and he says that you must defeat him to become the Hokuto
Shinken successor. A one-on-one battle commences.

If you are not at level 38 or so, then this will probably be impossible. Use
むそうてんせい to increase the chances of avoiding his attacks. If you are at
level 37 or below, he will probably still hit you most times, and you won't
last very long since he does a lot of damage. If you are at level 38,
suddenly he misses almost every time, making the fight very easy. Use some of
the stronger aura attacks to deal him heavy damage quickly and you should
win, possibly without taking any damage.

After defeating Kenshiro, he names you the new Hokuto Shinken successor and
you receive the ability さいしゅうおうぎ. Then Kuroyasha (くろやしゃ) appears
to join your party as the fourth member (not Kenshiro, WTF!!?!?!?). Kuroyasha
is exactly the same character as Kazemaru (same aura skills and equippable
items), and comes with the Yashaguruma item which lets you escape from
dungeons. You'll want to upgrade some of his equipment, though. He also says
that Hakenoh's castle has appeared in this valley.

Go down the stairs that Kenshiro was standing over. You'll find Toki's
Shoulderpads (トキのかたあて) in a chest there and Kenshiro's Clothes
(ケンシロウのふく). I didn't equip Toki's Shoulderpads since they seem weaker
than the equipment I already had.

To find Hakenoh's castle, exit the Crystal Palace and exit the screen that
contains its entrance. Then, in the next screen, where Kuroyasha used to be
standing, you'll find Hakenoh's castle at the top of the screen.

---Hakenoh's Castle----------------------------------------------------------
You find Kazemaru inside the castle entrance. He dies and your "Sadness" stat
increases. Kuroyasha also learns そせいは.

Use the following directions to reach the top of the castle:
1F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
2F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
3F: Go up the stairs in the upper-left corner.
4F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
5F: Go up the stairs in the lower-left corner.
6F: Go up the stairs in the middle of the room.
7F: Go up the stairs in the lower-right corner.
8F: This is the throne room. Make your way to the throne to find Hakenoh.
Talk to him to begin a one-on-one battle (make sure your HP/OP are maximized
first, of course). Use むそうてんせい to make it so he misses most of the
time. Then use whatever you want to attack. I prefer to use てんはかっさつ to
conserve OP. Try not to waste all of your OP because this isn't your last
battle and you won't have a chance to heal up after this one.

After defeating Hakenoh the first time, he reveals his true identity: Ryuudo.
Another one-on-one battle commences. Use むそうてんせい again to help you
evade his attacks. He has a lot less HP than Hakenoh, so you can probably get
away with defeating him using just regular attacks if your OP is too low to
use any aura skills.

After defeating Ryuudo, Kenshiro appears and talks to Ryuudo. Apparently this
was some sort of trial to prove yourself worthy of being the Hokuto Shinken
successor. Having defeated Kenshiro and Ryuudo, you are now the successor,
and the game ends. Congratulations on finally making it to the end!

This section lists all of the aura skills that I came across. These are like
the magic spells of this game. Below, I divide the skills into their 3 sub-
categories. Within each category, the skills are listed in Japanese
"alphabetical" order.

The information given for each skill is:
Japanese name - Effect, OP cost (Who learns it and at what level).

Sorry that there are quite a few skills that I didn't understand their
effect, but if you know how they work, please send me an email and it would
be greatly appreciated ([email protected]).
