Hiryu no Ken III is a fighting/action game for the Famicom. This game in the
series focuses on five warriors who set out on their quest to defeat an evil
force. The fighting system in the Hiryu no Ken games is unique since it
involves hitting/defending targets on your enemy or yourself, and that is the
only way to carry out many of the battles. There are some free-form elements
as well, like when you make your way through the stages, but the battles are
pretty standard. I personally found the game a little bit tedious since these
battles tend to take quite a bit longer than they should (in my opinion).
Nonetheless, the series is worth checking out if you're looking for something
that is a bit different while still being fun.

==========
Game Modes
==========

When you first start the game, you will have two options: Start (スタート),
and Continue (ふっかつのおうぎ). If you are starting a new game, you can pick
the difficulty setting here. The settings are Easy (チビッコモード), Normal
(ふつうモード), and Hard (マニアモード). You can then pick your controller
style as either Beginner (ビギナー) or Master (マスター). The Beginner
controls are simpler of course, meaning it is easier to attack and jump,
whereas the Master controls are for veterans to the game/series. If you pick
Easy mode, you will enter a training mode to familiarize yourself with the
controls before the main game begins.

========
Gameplay
========

General Information
-------------------

Throughout the game, you will run into regular enemies you can fight as you
approach them. There are also special battle sequences that are more formal
and restricted in how you proceed. Unique to the series is a targeting system
where during these fights, a target can appear on your character or the
enemy, and you must either attack/defend that location accordingly (you can't
just fight blindly; this requires you to have a strategy and pay attention).
As you fight, your KO gauge on the bottom will gradually fill; get hit by
enemy attacks and it will deplete. If it is full, you can use your special
ability to cause a lot of damage if it connects. This is covered in more
detail if you picked the Beginner difficulty setting.

Usually the targets will be red, but sometimes a blue one will come up. It
means you have an opportunity to grab and throw your opponent (Down + A + B).
A blue "R" will also appear in place of a target sometimes; if you land a
blow, you can repeatedly attack for several seconds without being blocked!
It can be a bit tedious, but it is the only way many of the game's battles
work.

In certain battles, you can also switch characters (late in the game only),
or switch to a disguise (mainly used in those fights against the special
warriors).

Items
-----

Amulet: Use it to ward off evil spirits.

Holy Water: Use it to recover your health (can only have 3 at once).

Warrior Socks: Allows you to return back to certain areas in that chapter.

=========
Chapter 1
=========

Starting off in the first chapter, head right and defeat the groups of
enemies that appear. The blue enemies will stop briefly before throwing a
projectile at you, so watch out. Up ahead you will have to stop and fight a
mace-spinning enemy. Crouch to avoid its attack, and kick/punch repeatedly
when you get close to quickly defeat it.

Continue along and defeat the enemies that appear, and you will soon run into
a man with green shorts. This will be your first actual fight where you have
to attack/defend when the targets appear on your opponent or yourself. Keep
in mind that containers of Holy Water may float overhead at random; jump to
grab it if you spot one. Defeat this simple opponent, then you can continue
onward. You will see some steps ahead; pass them for now and attack the white
blocks behind the steps to reveal a hidden Amulet item.

Next, jump up the steps and onto the ledges above. If you jump your way
upward on the blue beams, you will find another couple of white blocks that
can be cleared to reveal another Holy Water. Make your way to the right and
then drop down to the ground level again. Go left and break some more white
blocks (you can tell they are breakable since they will be on a black
background surrounded by a solid wall) to find Warrior Socks.

Continue to the right and you will have to fight a black belt karate man. Be
careful since he can use special moves that send him all around the room; at
least you can jump and move to avoid getting hit. Upon winning this fight,
you will receive a Dragon Wing. Go up the steps ahead and continue into the
next area.

Defeat the fast-moving enemies that appear in groups in this area, and you
will have to face another mace-wielding enemy ahead. Defeat this guy the same
way you did it the first time around, and then keep moving to reach the next
room. There are spikes on the ceiling, so jump onto the lower beam ahead and
walk off the right end to land on the platform below. Then, jump up the steps
and ride the elevator to the next level.

Go left and defeat the enemies, and ride the next elevator upward. There are
two possible stops on this next elevator; get off at the first level and you
can break the blocks to partially fill your KO gauge. On the top level, head
to the right and you will meet a tough enemy with a long pole as a weapon.
Quickly defend yourself when you are targeted, and attack when possible, to
win this fight. The targets come and go quickly, so be prepared!

After the battle, go right and beat some more enemies, then you will run into
a very strong looking enemy. He is tough, but if you attack/defend properly,
you will have very few problems here. Once you beat him though, you will
immediately fight another tough guy who likes to use his special attacks
(try to jump and avoid them). After the fight, go up the elevator and head up
and right along the ledges. At the top, go right and you will meet another
mace-wielding enemy. Defeat it and continue onward, where you will meet the
last boss of this chapter. This will take a while since he likes to use his
special attack and shoot projectiles, but you can avoid them by jumping.

After you beat the boss, you will have completed Chapter 1!

=========
Chapter 2
=========

Start off by heading to the right, jumping over the gaps along the way. These
enemies will stop when they approach before attempting to knock you over the
head, so be ready for that. Up ahead, defeat the karate man in a battle (he
likes to use projectiles; you can tell when he is going to use one if he
jumps backward), then continue onward.

Defeat some more enemies along the way, including the blue ones that throw
projectiles to attack. You will reach another karate man that you have to do
battle with. His special move involves jumping in the air and throwing down
projectiles at you, so be careful! When you beat him, you will get another
Dragon Wing though!

Ahead, defeat some more enemies (they constantly appear in groups of two when
you kill them). At the end of the path, a man will call to you, and a door
will open. Enter that room and talk to him, then exit and go right into the
next area. Avoid the spikes above and drop into the pit ahead. Fall down the
ledges until you see the opening to the right, then hop across the gap and
continue into the water. Water-based enemies will emerge, so beat them when
they come out.

Continue heading right through the watery areas, being careful not to hit the
spikes overhead. At the end, jump up the ledges to the top area, and enter
the doorway to the left. In the next room, go left and defeat the blue guys
that fall from the ceiling. You will then have to fight another karate man;
this guy likes throwing stars from a distance and performing flying kicks, so
beware. Defeat him and head left, where you will have to face another fighter
in battle. This guy uses spinning kicks and shoots fire for his high attacks,
so duck to avoid them.

Once you win, you will receive Garuda Arms. Up ahead, break the blocks to
find the hidden Warrior Socks. Enter the doorway ahead and you will have to
fight a large-scale boss, who you fight in a menu-driven format. You can use
a regular attack (こうげき), or you can use a special attack (ほうりき) which
is usually much stronger. After you use the special, you can either run away,
use a barrier (バリア), or use Holy Water to recover some HP. It may be a
lengthy battle, but you should be able to get through this easily. If the
special attack is causing very little damage, use regular attacks for a bit
since it seems to charge up the special.

Once you defeat this giant boss, you will receive a key item which you can
view on the inventory screen. Anyway, go left and another door will open in
the wall, so enter it. Break the first blocks to gain some invincibility for
a period of time. Make your way through the area, defeating the enemies you
meet. The blue ledges will collapse soon after being stepped on, so be quick
when moving about. There are two points with spikes that raise/lower from
above; watch the pattern and get past those safely. If you break the blocks
along the way, you'll grab a couple of other items as well.

At the end, go through the door to reach the next room. There, go right and
beat the groups of enemies that approach you. There will be a man with a pole
that you have to fight; duck to avoid his high attacks and pay attention to
the targets to be successful as always. After that, go ahead to the next
area. Defeat the enemies in that next room until the enemy's health bar
appears, at which point you have to fight a samurai warrior boss.

This enemy wields a blade and uses it to attack. He also shoots out beams,
but the room will flash before that occurs, so you can jump to avoid it. Beat
this guy all the same, and you will end up in a new place. Go ahead and enter
the room, where you will meet a karate man for a battle. Beat this guy fast,
then you will go ahead and meet the chapter boss, Kujaku. He has a lot of
health so this will take a while, but it is quite doable if you pay attention
to the targets. If you use your disguise, you can block his special attack,
which helps a LOT!

After the battle, Chapter 2 comes to a close.

=========
Chapter 3
=========

Starting off with a new character, head right and get through the water full
of enemies ahead. Defeat the skeletal birds and zombie enemies flooding the
area, and you will then have to fight another man in battle. Defeat him, and
continue onward to a town area. Talk to the priests and continue to the next
area. Make your way through the water, then up the waterfall, and onward to
the end. Fight the man ahead, ducking to avoid his fire-spitting high attack.

After that battle, you will have to fight another guy. Use your disguise to
make quick work of this guy, then after the fight, collect the Dragon Wing
and continue into the cave ahead. In there, defeat the zombie onslaught and
jump up the ledges to reach the higher area. Continue onward and a giant
beast will jump out. It likes to punch to attack, but I find that crouching
and attacking up close works well.

Once you beat the beast, defeat even more enemies as you cross the bridge. At
the end, break the blocks ahead to gain invincibility, and enter the area
ahead. In here, jump across the ledges and you will see a spark above. It is
actually a laser that appears when you try to pass, so trigger it and jump
across when it retracts. Up ahead, ride the platform upward and head left at
the top. Trigger the lasers and jump across safely when they retract, and go
up the elevator at the end. Head right and jump up the ledges, then continue
onto yet another elevator.

At the top of the area, you will find another fighter to do battle with. He
has a diving move (he will stagger backwards before doing it; get ready to
jump), and likes to throw (press the buttons repeatedly to break free). Beat
this guy like any other, and collect the item left behind. Continue ahead and
you will have to fight a large man, who you met earlier in the game. He has a
lot of health, but the battle is relatively easy I think.

After that fight, go on to the next area. A helicopter will appear in the
background, with groups of enemies jumping out to attack. In the midst of the
regular enemies, you will have to defeat the mace-wielding enemy, as well as
a samurai blade warrior. Once you beat them all, the helicopter will be
destroyed and you can continue.

In the cave area again, go right and defeat the large beast that appears.
Then, keep going through the cave and beat the next fighter you are faced
with. Then, simply continue through the cave to the very end, and go through
the door there. Outside, you will have to fight another boxer. Beat him, and
then use your disguise to beat the second opponent immediately after him.

Once those fights are over, you will be sent into another RPG-style battle.
Take the same approach as you did last time, using your regular and special
attacks, as well as the Flying Dragon Fist (ひりゅうのけん) when it becomes
available (which usually seems to be after certain enemy attacks). If the
enemy goes offscreen, it will recover 50 HP. To make it return, use your
special attack, or else all attacks will miss.

After you win the battle, Chapter 3 will be over!

=========
Chapter 4
=========

From the start, go right and win the first two battles you are faced with
(use the disguise for the second part of the second battle). Up ahead, defeat
the skeletal birds and the fire-spitting plant enemies. When you reach the
end, defeat the mace-wielding enemy, and continue through the door to reach
the next room. In there, defeat the zombies and enter the door at the end,
where you will face another large-scale monster in an RPG battle.

This one will be difficult since the creature will split in two, which means
you will be attacked twice each round. At least they share the same health,
so it could have been worse. Use your specials, and the Flying Dragon Fist
when available, to quickly defeat this creature.

After the fight, you will receive another Dragon Wing. You will then fall
down a long pit. When you land, break the blocks to get a couple of items,
then head down and right. Defeat the zombies and the fire-spitting plant, and
you will meet a man to fight with. Beat him quickly and collect another
Dragon Wing, then continue on to leave the area. Watch the scene, and you'll
end up in a new area.

Jump up the ledges and ride the right platform upward. At the top, jump onto
the right ledge and continue onward. Defeat the enemies as you head to the
left, then you will meet a man to battle. Defeat him, then continue ahead to
the left. Beat the enemies you meet and enter the first room. Watch the scene
there, then enter the second door.

Outside, go right and defeat the man in battle. Then, defeat the regular
enemies you encounter, and enter the room at the far end. There, drop into
the pit, and you will enter into a battle against a man riding a dragon. It
moves back and forth, stopping briefly to shoot fire from its mouth. Avoid
that attack by jumping, then attack its head at all other times. Once you
beat it, use your disguise and defeat the warrior in the second battle.

After that, continue to the right through the cave. Defeat the giant beast
enemy you meet (crouching to attack works best to avoid its attacks). Up
ahead, crouch to avoid the laser and slowly move to the right as it retracts,
ducking as needed. Then, continue along by dropping to the lower area. At
the bottom, go left to the edge and break the blocks to gain invincibility.

With this power, jump onto the platform and ride it upward, then quickly jump
across the ledges to the left, avoiding the lasers overhead. Head left and
get past the lasers while defeating the enemies, then enter the door at the
end. You will have to fight two battles in a row, each as a different
character (be sure to use your disguises).

Once those battles are over, Chapter 4 will be over as well.

=========
Chapter 5
=========

Starting off in the final chapter, head to the right and defeat the regular
enemies you meet. Defeat the first guy in battle, then go ahead and beat the
second guy just beyond him. Those fights are quite simple so you have nothing
to be concerned about. After that, continue ahead and you will enter a boxing
ring. You will then have to battle your opponents, one at a time. The first
and third guys are relatively simple, but the second one will take a while
because of his speed. As long as you can properly jump/evade the various
attacks, you will be fine.

The fifth and sixth enemies will bring something new, in that they can gain a
super-strong attack every so often (you can tell when they are flashing).
Simply avoid them until they throw a punch and you will be okay. For all of
these battles, if you see the enemy standing still with no target, jump out
of the way since they are about to do a special move.

Once you beat the final opponent in the ring, watch the scenes and you will
be back outside. You can now switch your character to any of the five you
played with up until this point (on the menu, go to なかまとかわる). Head to
the right and you will have to fight two different battles against two
warriors. Use your disguises to defeat them (I find the third character is
the best in these situations, personally).

After you win those two fights, continue going to the right while fighting
the regular enemies, and continue into the second area. Defeat some more
enemies as you proceed, then continue to the new section ahead. You will see
a helicopter appear, so defeat the enemies that emerge from it. Once you beat
the samurai warrior enemy, the helicopter will be destroyed.

From here, continue through the enemy-filled desert area until you reach the
cave segment. In there, go right and defeat another samurai warrior, followed
by a large beast. Defeat the zombies along the way, then jump across the
ledges above the gap. At the far right end, drop down the tall pit and
continue right into the next area. Defeat the mounted dragon enemy, then use
your disguise and defeat the warrior afterward.

Following the battles, jump along the ledges to make your way left and upward
through the area. Head to the right and you will come to a door. Enter it and
do battle with the warrior inside (use your disguise - へんしん - of course).
After you win, go up the steps to the right until you reach the split in the
path. Go right for now and enter the room there to face a pole-wielding enemy
in battle.

Defeat that guy, and then go down the steps to the left. At the split again,
go up the left steps to the top, then jump to the lower-left ledge. Enter the
room there and defeat the enemy with two blades inside. After that, jump to
the steps and head up the left side to the very top. This time, jump across
the ledges to the right side and enter the room there. Defeat the enemy in
that room, then exit and head all the way left along the top area. You will
pass a closed door that requires the five bosses be defeated before you can
enter. To the left is the final room. Defeat the warrior in there and then
go back to that locked room to open it.

When you are ready, enter that room and you will have to fight an enemy known
as Fudou. He is another warrior like the ones you've been fighting, so don
your disguise and get to battle. The battle will take a long time due to the
high amount of health he has, but this is nothing you haven't dealt with in
the past. Once you beat Fudou in this form, he will turn into a larger beast
which you will have to fight in the RPG format.

This final beast has 999 HP, so it will take quite a beating before you can
finally kill it. Use your regular and special attacks/abilities to bring this
creature down. Once you do so, the game will be complete; congratulations on
beating this game!
