Hanafuda Yuukyou Den is, as you guessed, a Hanafuda playing card game for the
Famicom. It is based on the Koi-Koi style of play. Basically, you play with
picture cards, and the objective is to make pairs and combinations known as
"yaku", which is how you ultimately score points. As with many such games in
the era, this one involves scantily clad women, who you get to see more of as
you win more and more. Nonetheless, the Hanafuda card game is fun and a bit
different than the usual cards you know, so I would recommend trying it out!

============
Starting Off
============

When the game begins, you can pick one of three girls to play against. This
is a matter of your own personal preference, since the more you win, the more
revealing pictures of these girls you will see. Before each actual match
begins, you will go to a screen where you can spend your Power points (earned
randomly during the matches when drawing cards from the deck). Below is a
quick rundown of what each option on that list is.

手札透視メガネ (View Opponent's Cards) - 10 Power
手札変換 (Card Exchange at Match Start) - 15 Power
猪底蝶 (Inoshikacho) - 20 Power
青短 (Aotan) - 25 Power
赤短 (Akatan) - 30 Power
三光 (Sanko) - 35 Power
究極五光 (Ultimate Goko) - 40 Power

How to Play
===========

At the start of a Hanafuda game, each player is dealt 8 cards, and 8 cards
are dealt face up in the middle area. On your turn, you pick one of the cards
in your hand to make a match with another card in the middle. The two cards
you matched up will be moved to your own private area. You will then draw a
card from the unused deck stack, and if another match can be made from that
card, you get to keep it as well. If you can't make a match, either with your
first card or the one drawn from the deck, you simply leave the card face up
in the middle area.

The main objective of the game is to form "yaku", or certain combinations of
cards. On their own, the cards are not worth anything, but if you make yaku,
you can score points that way. If during the game you end up making a yaku,
you will have the option of calling Koi-Koi (こいこい), which means you can
keep playing and hopefully make more yaku to earn more points. Also, you can
end the game right at that point and keep the points you just earned. It can
be dangerous to call Koi-Koi since if your opponent gets a yaku and decides
to end the game, you don't win anything. In addition, whatever points you
earn are also subtracted from your opponent's tally (if your opponent wins 8
points, you will lose 8 points).

In this particular rendition, there are only 12 matches to be played total,
so the game will end after the 12th one. As you win matches, you will get to
see the female opponent become more scantily clad, culminating in a nude shot
at the end. If you lose a match, the game will be over.

The types of yaku are listed below:

Yaku          Points  Cards
----          ------  -----
Kasu          1       Any 10 1-point cards
Tan           1       Any 5 5-point cards

Ame-Shiko     7       Any 4 20-point cards (includes Rainman card)
Shiko         8       4 20-point cards (excludes Rainman card)

Hanafuda Playing Cards
======================

The playing cards for this and other Hanafuda card games are comprised of 12
suit, representing every month of the year. Each suit has four picture cards;
generally there are two cards (usually with pictures of that month's flower
or some other generic design) in each suit worth one point, one worth five (a
poetry ribbon, usually), and a special card worth 10-20 points. Keep in mind
these points are not for your actual score; if you don't make a yaku, they
are meaningless. Here is a quick rundown of the cards in the game:
