01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Hana no Star Kaidou' for the NES, released by Victor Interactive
Software in 1987. The game was only released in Japan but features only
English text.
Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
This game is amazingly tough!! I WARNED YOU!
Aim of the game:
````````````````
Now that we have this behind you, I want to warn you once more than this is one
of the most frustrating games in the world. You control two musicians (Moeta
and Goro) on the rise and have to control them at the same time with only one
controller! The second controller will do the same as the first but you cannot
split the two guys up and play separately.
Your goal is to collect enough CDs to gain entrance to the building in which
you want to find a car that looks a little bit like a teleporter because you
step on it to finish the level. Stop me if this still does not make sense but
it won't do you much good. You also need other items to progress.
Controls:
`````````
Left and Right moves the musicians around, easy so far.
Up and Down brings the two closer together and further apart. This is very
important and actually bringing them closer together is the best way to go.
Another very important aspect is slaying enemies but slaying them the right
way. You will see below that you can shoot them. After you have stunned them
you do not want to shoot them again. Instead, press the Down button to surround
them from both sides and they will pop a CD. We knew they are hiding it but it
took a velociraptor prey approach to squeeze it out of their *insert hidden
spot you think is funniest here*.
A is for jumping. The longer you hold the button down the higher you jump. This
sounds like a good thing but actually this is hard to control too. Physics in
the game are a little tricky. Combine jumping with the directions for the usual
platformer effect.
B shoots little music notes. Let's call it singing. This will stun the enemies
on foot and kill them on the second shot (let's assume they are taken to a
better place because after all a criminal record does not do the music career
to well). Entering a building is also done by singing in front of the door, as
romantic it may sound you only do this in front of the recording studio and I
do not recommend it as a way to gain access to a recording studio nowadays.
B is also used for ascending escalators. The timing for hitting the escalator
has a tiny learning curve but nothing compared to other things like...jumping
or surviving...but worse case you'll shoot out a little music note and
sometimes both hits. By the time you ascend your 10th escalator you will hit it
smoothly and feel like it's the most awesome thing in the world. Or not, or
maybe you will never get to the 10th and already threw the game cartridge out
of the window. Odds of that happening: 1 in 4.
START: pause the game, resume again. This is the easiest part of the game.
Hazards:
````````
Moeta and Goro are easily killed. The hearts at the top are not actually a life
bar but they will get drained from the time limit. So hazard number one would
be that you have to go through the level rather quickly. The heart count is
reset when you enter the building.
Crap (cans, hoops?) gets thrown from the sky. Do not ask me why. Sometimes it
seems to drop from windows so fair enough. This will not instantly kill you but
first drain your CDs and once that count is zero you will die with the next
hit. As you also need to collect CDs to progress it is very advisable not to
get hit by any crap anyway. Street smarts not needed. If you have the special
item (tape) you will lose that first before the CDs get drained. As you need
both to progress it makes no difference, only that CDs are usually easier to
find.
Press. We all love them, them and their freedom. But unfortunately in this game
they also take the freedom to kill you and STEAL your stuff. Weird but true,
they are vicious killers and ruthless thieves (or maybe not so weird?). If you
get hit by their flash you lose a CD. Some other pedestrians or building
occupants (clowns even?) will simply harm you by walking into you, thus never
trust a hot lady in a red dress, that counts for real life too. Now go watch
'Gone Girl'. Later enemies become more vicious including a Duffy Duck style
goon that can shoot projectiles towards you rather than just plain straight
as the knife-throwing goons would. The learning curve is steep here, my friend.
Motorcycles are probably the worse of the bunch. They are fast and pop out of
nowhere, giving you almost no reaction time and of course rescuing BOTH guys
without other hazard while you jump away, or low platforms that block your
jumps...you are often pretty screwed. And if you think you made it by them they
will love to come back from the opposite side to hunt you later! They also come
in some kind of tricycle form but I think you get the idea of their evilness.
Chasms, you are probably thinking "why is that a hazard, it's common sense" and
I wasn't sure I need to mention it at first, but, yeah, do not fall into any
m'kay. And there is one very definite thing worth mentioning in that when the
building has a floor to descend you must only jump into the empty space when
you are just above it and not any higher. Wait for the screen to shift and show
you the next part of the floor for safe passage. Now you believe me that this
is a hazard? Floors only kill you if you cannot look down lolz
Doors, while not seemingly a hazard, will take you back outside the building.
That is, in my humble opinion, a horrible option because usually when you are
in the building you want to get to the exit. The same goes for the car
teleporter. If you failed to have enough CDs and the special item you will be
kicked out of the building rather than move on to the next level. Looking at
how little time hearts you will have remaining I would say that is pretty
hazardous.
So to sum up, it's game over if any of the two rascal heroes has lost all
lives.
Goodies:
````````
Yes, so to the good part.
CDs are for collecting. You need a certain amount to enter the recording
studio.
Tape is similar to CDs but you only need 1 and in fact can only hold one. It
is necessary to enter the recording studio.
Instrument (saxophone, guitar and so on) will make you invulnerable for a short
amount of time. You will flash during that period or shortly after you pick it
up even though the invulnerability has already kicked in as soon as you picked
it up. As it usually takes effort to get it I do not personally recommend
getting it but it is a nice effect.
You gain a life after each successful level.
Points are there for counting, duh. They do not have any other meaning. Points
are scored by defeating enemies, picking up CDs etc and also when you finish
the level (depending on your items at the end I believe). I doubt anyone will
replay the game to rake up a high-score after the masochistic trip through the
game in the first place.
Display:
````````
The display is rather easy to explain.
The top has 3 rows. It shows the stage number on the left side and the name
of the area below. The number next to the area name is the area number as each
one is split up into several sections. The score is your point total. Next to
it are the CDs collected at this point and next that number you will find the
special item pop up. The last two names are your musicians with the number of
lives remaining (you start with 3). The heart row has already been discussed
earlier than it represents your time remaining. The rest of the screen is the
action area.
===============================================================================
03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300
===============================================================================
This walkthrough is pretty much dead on getting through the game. It is hard
to accomplish and if you fail to follow then that means compensating with
more disk collecting and maybe run of time.
Unless otherwise stated you should always have the musicians walk closest
together.
Stage 1: Harajuku (10CDs) G0310
`````````````````
Nice day out in the park. Run right past the McDs and jump over the bike and
then some lady, some gaps in the street (huh, potholes?) and then walk up the
stairs to the next area.
Jump over the gaps and stun the two visitors. Get their stuff (CD 01 and tape).
Continue over some gaps and get the guy coming down the stairs (CD02) and now
the tricky part: land on the top of the stairs so that you can stay together
and the jump to the top of the screen. The lower ones are dangerous and have
less disks. At the top you can kill one person for CD03, then find a CD04
randomly littered around and then the next both drops two CDs...oh yeah (CD05,
CD06).
Go past the station and kill the person (CD07, CD08). Soon you will find a
person that drops another two disks (CD09 and CD10) and that is enough for the
level. Move along and just stun the next guy (he'll drop another tape and it is
worth 100) but you are on a time limit!! Continue along (ignoring the first set
of stairs) and only stun and avoid the bike until you can ascend another set of
stairs.
Go left, stun the press and enter the buildings by pressing B in front of the
door. Now you also know what the recording studio looks like.
Inside, go right one screen and grab the sax if you want it. Continue right
until the only option is to go up. Ignore the door and continue up. This next
part is tricky. Go up on the left side and do not worry if one guy stays behind
as you just jump one by one as you go higher. If any crap falls down try to
have it go just through the middle of the musicians. When you can finally go
left make sure you do so and then continue all the way to the left side of the
building. When it is time to descend you will know and at the bottom go right
again. This will all look familiar but just do it. On the right side you will
find a couple of cars that look like teleporters. Stand on them to finish the
level.
Really? No cheats? No save states? Well, wow!!!
"Good luck to your first release. Your next step is to go to a record."
Stage 2: Akoyama (15CDs) G0320
````````````````
Remember to put your guys close to each other at the start.
Ignore the first lady and jump to the level one up. Stun the guy and squeeze a
record out of him (CD01). Jump over the barrier and stay on the same level.
Another executive-looking guy will pop up soon who gets the same treatment
(CD02). Up ahead a tiny tricky part. You have to push the little blocks
outwards which enables you to drop down. Stun and kill the guy (CD03) before
moving on. There is another victim (or villain?) before the gaps (CD04) which
you have to get across. Another executive after the gaps rounds the number up
to CD05 and then run up the stairs (the other guy tends to drop down really
fast so forget his CD).
Run left and step on the crystal steps to make a CD appear (CD06, CD07, CD08,
CD09). The photographer will give you newspaper special item. On the next level
is a guitar up on the top and you should try to make it because else the guy
might hurt you. With the guitar picked up you can just waltz through the next
couple of guys until the flashing stops. The next guy will drop CD10. A little
further ahead you can pick up a suit as you hit music notes against the top of
the stairs but I am unclear how this is used. Either way you almost have enough
CDs so turn around and hit the enemies on the way as well as stepping on the
crystal steps to collect more CDs. You only need 15. Continue right and soon
you will see a car coming towards you. Do the jumping thing to avoid it and
after a couple of buildings you will see a guitar pop up in the sky which is a
godsend because you are just about to be hit by a second car from the front as
well. Either way you are at the JVC building now.
Drop down on the right side and then a little further down, staying at the
center all the way. Turn right when you have to and soon take the steps up to
the next screen. Continue climbing in the center and eventually climb on the
left side. Up another couple of screens and when you see a very stair-case
style step at the left side you should turn to the right screen. Slowly climb
down at the right side and soon you will find the car teleporter things.
Remember that you need both guys at the same level towards the bottom of the
screen for the screen to scroll down else you risk falling into the abyss.
"Show up you gays (sic). You gonna be famous. What are you think about that.
You are going to have your own records."
Stage 3: Shinjuku (20CDs) G0330
`````````````````
Run right and jump over the tiny gaps. At the end you should get to the middle
level and have your guys stand aside. You'll have to jump over the lady one by
one. Shooting at the end of the platform before the lady also reveals an
instrument. Stun the geek at the bottom of the stairs for CD01 and proceed up
the escalator to the second avenue.
Walk along until you finally find another guy (CD02), then jump over the gaps
and kill the next two people (CD03, CD04). On the way you can jump up a
platform and reach another CD05. Go up the next escalator.
Run right to the small crystal platforms which you can step on to make CDs.
That will get you to CD09. Turn left instead and kill another guy on the way
(CD10). Jump up to the top level and run along. You will miss the CDs at the
mid-level but it would soon kill you to be there due to the cars. You do get
the chance to kill one guy at the top level so you are now at CD11. Jump down
at the end ascend the escalator.
Run right and stun/kill the businessman (CD12) before a few tricky jumps. Kill
the lady (CD13) and continue on. The rozzer (copper) drops CD14, then ensure
you jump over the car and quickly ascend the escalator.
These jumps are horrendous difficult, and after you finally make it across
you will now be asked by yours truly to also kill the copper for CD15. There
is another CD at the top and you will reveal another one when you step on the
right crystal platform, totaling CD17 plus one from the guy who is waiting
at the bottom (CD18). A lonely businessman up ahead will drop yet another CD
and then you can pick any of the next few guys to total CD20. The entrance to
the building is up ahead.
Jump up and turn right, then continue right until you no longer can. At this
point start dropping down slowly until you can turn left again. Eventually
you need to go up to the cars but this maze is rather easy.
"Here it comes. Every body sing. sing. sing. OK. Now all you have to do is to
get people."
Stage 4: Shibuya (30CDs) G0340
````````````````
Your first task is to jump to the top platform. Done? Good. Move along and stun
the goon for your first CD01. Go a little left to pick up the one you saw
walking along (CD02). Get across the moving platform (do you I have to mention
that it is tricky? :)
Move along the middle and move the two sliding panels so you can drop to the
bottom. Then stun the guy on the way (CD03). At the end reach the top and drop
down, staying slightly right though. The guy will follow you so now is your
chance to stun him (CD04). Jump over the gaps (yes, it's not easy) and stun
the reporters at the other end (CD05) and CAMERA.
Now have one guy jump to the top and the other guy stay at the bottom. By
doing this and going right you will find three CDs in total (CD06, CD07, CD08)
before reaching another jumping part. Ignore the staircase and jump to the
upper level, also ignoring the reporter at the left side. Jump past the lady
blowing deadly kisses and quickly get up to the middle level to avoid the
heart. At the top right is another CD09. Careful of the hearts as you drop
back down and then use the moving platforms to reach another CD10. Stun the guy
(CD11) and then make it all the way to the next section at the right side.
Exiting the subway, immediately turn left back into the subway to reach Yoyogi.
Run left until you find a guy to stun (CD12) and end up at the 6th avenue. You
want to avoid all the other people on the way because you will soon have the
chance to collect a lot of CDs much quicker than fumbling with these goons.
Run left and up the stairs, then drop one guy to the middle level while the
other one stays at the bottom. When running further left you will uncover a lot
of CDs (CD13, CD14, CD15, CD16 and CD17). Return right to the stairs leading
back to the previous area.
The trick is to keep repeating this section because it gives you 5 CDs. After
two cycles you will be on CD27. When you return to the previous area you will
want to continue right. Skip the stairs and instead stun the reporters (CD28)
and when you reach the top of the red blocks stay at the top too.
The good news is that you almost have all the CDs for this level. The bad news
is that this took a while to get and I almost want to bet it is impossible to
beat this level without at least dying once to reset the time. Furthermore,
the next part of the level is tough as nails. Get prepared (mentally).
Avoid the goons shooting at you while you drop down and then quickly jump over
the motorbike to reach the middle area. Wait for it to go left at the end and
quickly drop down and back up to the middle. Have one guy go to the top while
the other stays in the middle and you will have 2 more CDs appear (CD29, CD30).
If you missed any before there are more chances don't worry. Anyway, careful
with the knife-throwing goons and then drop down to the platform that moves up
(it is slightly hidden below the screen actually). Jump to the other one coming
from the top and the rest of the level is a little easier as you just have to
stun enemies and jump little gaps. You will soon reach the MHK building.
Inside, first go right, then right again (middle level), then start going up
(careful of the paparazzi coming down as well as the car further up). When you
almost get hit by a projectile coming from the top (unclear where that is from
but whatever), go up two more screens and then turn left. Start dropping down.
At the third screen or so you have two choices to go down so pick the right
side else you are stuck in some other area but no big deal. At the very bottom
go right and you will see the cars already. What an achievement (either you
making it or crappiness or game design - up to you to pick BOTH!)
"Now you are on your wat to the Budoukan. Very well. Very well. Very well. Your
only target is. The big playing ball as well as Budoukan."
Stage 5: Roppongi (40CDs) G0350
`````````````````
Yes, 40 disks, but actually this is an easy level to begin with. You will see
why in a second.
Start by going right up to the 2nd avenue. Jump up and down the red and green
building at the start to collect a nice four disks already (CD01, CD02, CD03,
CD04) as well as from the goon (CD05).
Now return to the 1st avenue and take the stairs back up to the 2nd. Repeat
collecting the disks here again and again until you reach CD35. It's actually
really easy. You can collect more if you feel you might drop some CDs from
getting hit but you will also pick up the last 5 on the way to the indoor area
and you are on a timer if you forgot... oh and I forgot to mention the disks
you picked up so: CD06, CD07, CD08 (...) ok forget it: CD35!
When ready go right at the 1st avenue instead and up the blocks. Reach the
top platform and the business man will drop another disk (CD36). Land on the
moving platform and reach the next area. Stun the songstress and continue at
the top. Stun another songstress and make it to the next platform after the
column. Stay at the top after you manage to maneuver the moving platforms
again. There is a floating disk (CD37) near the Donald Duck thing. Ignore the
other floating disks as they are too dangerous to get and instead focus on
killing (or stunning if you prefer the words) the reporter up ahead (CD38).
The paparazzi has a disk (CD39) as well as the music disk special item. Drop
down and jump across the moving platforms. Next up you have to jump over the
biker and some trash from the building until you enter the subway.
Keep entering the subway until you reach Ark Hill (actually the place is called
Ark HillS but okay).
Go left and avoid the songstress. Go up the stairs to the next area.
Go right and jump the moving platforms. The business man drops the last disk
(CD40). Jump into the middle and stun Donald, then keep going to reach the
Budokan. I am not trying to be lazy but this is familiar stuff. Very TOUGH
familiar stuff but as you should have all CDs now it should be obvious where to
go.
Inside the Budokan, keep going up. Eventually you will have a split in the
screen and you want to be on the left side to continue up. When you finally
see a goon (it takes a while) you still want to continue up. Soon you will have
a screen with what looks like stairs in the middle of it. After you go up from
there you should finally turn right.
Ignore all the goons until you hit the right side of the area. This time start
descending. Soon you turn left again. Careful of the car and then the next
screen descend again. The only choice is to continue right and then later
descend once again. After a few drops go left (annoying but nothing too
dangerous). Drop down again, careful of the door as it has enemies coming out,
then continue right. Drop down one screen and turn left again. This area almost
takes longer than the outdoor one. After a couple of screens you will see the
cars but careful of the enemy coming from the music box/coffin in this area.
"May 5.1989 Budoukan Tokyo. What you thought was so right. They did it. The
contract from the N.Y. Madison House just arrived here tonight. They will leave
for N.Y. tonight."
Stage 6: New York G0360
`````````````````
This is a short and easy area.
Stun the first enemy and pick up his trophy. This is the only thing you need to
progress in this area so just stun and ignore the rest of the enemies as you
make your way right. There are no pitfalls so you should have no problems.
Inside, jump up and turn right until you have to ascend. So far also super easy
stuff. Now pay attention to take the top left exit from this screen as you
want to continue left. After one screen you need to go up again so this time
beware of the enemies around here. Go up until you notice there are paths left
and right so stay at the right side and continue up. After another screen or so
turn right. Beware of the final few enemies as you find the last cars.
"Congratulations"
- You'd think there is a little bit more to the end of the game but fair enough
to congratulate us. If you beat this game without cheats you almost want to
find some online community to share your experience and maybe find some soul
mate out there who suffered through it as well. Or maybe seek our a shrink
because this game can make you psycho...
