"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-   1. Introduction   "-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Guerilla War is perhaps the most fun I've had with a shooter, not
including Super C. This game is extremely fun, and very easy to beat since
you have unlimited continues. Its something to play after a long day at
work, because it's very relaxing and takes the edge off you.

    It uses a lot of material from the Ikari Warrior games, and it brings
along all of its good points, such as non-stop enemies coming at you, but
some of its bad points also, especially that off-center shooting. It may
be realistic, but it makes it very hard to aim accurately. However,
overall Guerilla War is one of the best top-down shooter you're going to
find for the NES, and SNK should be proud of themselves for making it.
Also, this game was the predecessor for the excellent Metal Slug series
also produced by SNK on the Neo-Geo and Playstation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-   2. Overview And Controls   "-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

    You play as Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, trying to liberate Cuba
from tyranny. You also have to rescue hostages and kill all the imperial
scum along the way. This game has a lot of enemies, and the action is very
fast-paced. Also, the bosses are some of the hardest and most interesting
bosses I've ever seen in a NES game.

==========
Controls
==========

D-Pad    - Move your character
B Button - Fire
A Button - Throw grenade
START    - Pauses the game

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-   3. Power-Ups   "-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

    There are many power-ups in the game which will enhance your
firepower. Power-ups are usually red boxes with a letter inside of them.
There is also the Tank, which looks like a tank with the words IN on the
cockpit. Just move over a power-up to pick it up, or press A to get in the
Tank.
  _______________
 / L |   Laser   \
|----------------|------------------------------------------------------|

The most common power-up, it lets you fire rockets instead of bullets
This gives you more power and a faster fire rate. It is the weakest
power-up in the game, but a better choice than your everyday machine
gun.
=======================================================================

|--------------------|--------------------------------------------------|

This power-up first fires a rocket, then has a three-way machine gun
burst after the rocket explodes. The rocket range is about as long as
the regular Laser power-up before it explodes. However, only one
rocket is allowed on the screen at a time. The shot at the end can be
a life-saver when you are being surrounded, but doesn't add a lot
power.
=======================================================================

 / S |   Spreadshot   \
|---------------------|-------------------------------------------------|

It increases your rate of fire and makes the machine gun shots spread
in a V formation in front of you, with about three shots on at a time
However, this power-up does not enhance the power of the machine gun
, so it still doesn't destroy barriers, and it takes longer to kill
enemies. I would only pick it up if you have the Tank.
=======================================================================

|------------------|----------------------------------------------------|

Now here's a power-up worth getting. The Tank does some major damage,
and can even do more with certain power-ups. First off, you are
invincible in the tank, but the tank can only take a certain number
of hits before it starts beeping and then explodes. If you are in the
Tank at the time it blows up, you die. Also, the Tank combines with
with power-ups. For example, if you pick up the Laser power-up, the
Tank will fire rockets instead of regular tank shots. This leads to
amazing possibilities, especially with the Spreadshot. Overall, the
Tank is the best power-up in the game, period.

|-----------------------|-----------------------------------------------|

Ooo, baby, do I love this one. It shoots a HUGE wave of fire in front
of you, obliterating everything and everyone in your path. I really
wouldn't recommend this power-up if you are trying to save hostages,
because it really doesn't give you time to see them before they are
nothing but ashes :) Also, it has the same power in or outside the
Tank, making it a great power-up to pick up whenever you can.

|---------------------|-------------------------------------------------|

This power-up will give you rapid fire with your machine gun. Not
very useful, as it doesn't give you rapid fire for your other power
ups. One of the power-ups you only want to take when nothing else is
available.

When you pick up this power-up, all the enemies on the screen are
blown up. Obviously, this is the best thing to pick up off the ground
at any time, and it has a one-time use.

"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"   4. Walkthrough   "-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

==========================================================================
                            a.) The Landing
==========================================================================

    Head straight off your now-destroyed boat and grab the hostage on the
left and the Laser power-up on the right. Helicopters will strafe you from
the left then the right. Ahead, some soldiers are in a trench. Throw some
grenades, but don't go in the ditch as more will pop out. You'll have your
first encounter with red Grenadiers just ahead of that. Be sure to destroy
the barricade for a Shrapnel power up, as it is extremely powerful with
the Tank behind it. Blast through the enemies until you reach your first
boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Boss : Flatbed
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    If you have the tank, this boss will be extremely easy. Move the
tank on the bridge and blast away at the flatbed. However, if your
tank  was blown up, then stand below the bridge, kill any soldiers
immediately that come out, and lob some grenades if you have time. It
should take about six grenades or so to destroy the Flatbed.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    You're going to pass through a marijuana farm after this, and there
are S and B power-ups on either side of the gate leading to the farm. Pass
through the farm and get the Tank on the other side. Don't shoot your
cannon while you cross the bridge, or you'll have to abandon your tank for
the boss fight. After the bridge, just blast through to the boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Boss : Sergeant And Helicopter
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    When the fight begins, a Sergeant comes out of the main building.
He doesn't attack, but the soldiers he orders do. Lob grenades or fire
your cannon at the Sergeant to eliminate him and his men. If you don't
destroy all the men between waves, they will run down towards you, so
be careful. After destroying the Sergeant, a Helicopter will appear.

    The Helicopter moves to five different places on the screen:
middle, upper-left, lower-left, upper-right, and lower-right. At each
point it stops and fires a barrage of bullets at you. Lob your
grenades before the Helicopter shoots and releases soldiers, as you
won't be able to hit the Helicopter while you are avoiding or
shooting the soldiers. If you still have the Tank, the Helicopter
might not even make it to all five points on the screen, as it has
very weak armor.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

==========================================================================
                              b.) Farmtown
==========================================================================

    You encounter running hostages when you start out, so just run into
them for an easy 1000 points. Hit the red Grenadier on the left for a T
power-up, the one on the right for a L power-up. When you see a pig or
chicken, shoot it for another 1000 points. Get into the Tank up ahead, and
start rolling.

    Pick up the B power-up for some rapid-fire action, but watch for the
soldiers in the bushes. Sometime around now the soldiers will start
surrendering when you attack. It's your choice if you want them to live or
not, but they will attack you again eventually, so it's better to just
kill them in cold blood :) Cross the train tracks, and then the next
bridge. There is a hidden Extra Life in the second set of bunkers, the one
on the far left. Pick up the T power-up if you haven't already, and you'll
come to the mid-boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Boss : Bobby Tanx
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    Piece of blueberry pie, which is the best pie on Earth. Anyways,
walk behind him as soon as you get on the screen and fire at his rear
with the T power-up or throw grenades. He should blow up before he has
the chance to even back up.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    After spitting on his burning corpse, cross the bridge, get in the
trench, and throw some grenades at the bunker to get past it and also get
a S power-up. Once you get to the third set of bunkers after the next
bridge, you can find three different power-ups by blowing them up with the
Tank. I suggest the F and B power-up for maximum destruction. Be careful
of the soldiers that jump out if the bushes soon after that. They throw
grenades, which are deadly to your Tank. Once you reach the well, you know
you've reached the boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Boss : Billy Tanx
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    After hearing about the death of his little bro, Bobby, Billy
raced straight out of his house with tears in his eyes and started up
his Panzer. He knew revenge was the only option, and he thought he had
the tank skills to do it. He also has the one deadly skill Bobby his
mildly retarded brother could never learn: the ability to throw
backwards. It looks bad for ole Guevara, but this guy can be defeated
easily enough.

    Basically, Billy follows your movements by throwing grenades in
the direction you are heading. He can throw behind him, so there is no
safe point. The first step is to destroy all the bunkers, as they will
only hinder your movement. Move clockwise around Billy, firing your
power-up or throwing grenades when you get the chance. Once you almost
complete one circle, he will cut across horizontally to cut off your
path. Once he tries to do that, move counter-clockwise instead and
follow the same strategy as before. Eventually, Billy and Bobby will
be re-united, where they can actually kill one single soldier with a
tank, and Bobby finally learns how to throw backwards. You sent them
to a better place :)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

==========================================================================
                         c.) The Raging River
==========================================================================

    Two groups of soldiers pop out from the sides when you begin, so
start the party by roasting them where they stand. All the power-ups in
this level are either Flamethrowers or Rapid Fire, so you know it's gonna
be fun :) Kill the red Grenadier for the Flamethrower if you don't already
have one, and then enter the river.

    The river goes on for quite a ways, with nothing out of the ordinary.
Underwater troops act just like the ones in the trenches, but if they are
underwater and moving you can attack them at any time. After you have
crossed two bridges, you'll come to an large intersection with boats
coming at you. They fire rockets, and have the same armor as tanks. Once
you get past the boats, you'll climb onto some crates and then to the
surface of U-Boat 38.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Boss : U-Boat 38
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    Once you board the surface, the air-raid siren goes off and troops
flood the surface. Green troops come out at first, just your everyday
run-of-the-mill troops. Stand in the middle and throw grenades or use
your Flamethrower to eliminate them. You won't need to move at all.
Next is a group of Yellow troops. They have a spread shot, so move
further back on the submarine and fire your Flamethrower from there.
Finally, the Captain comes out. He requires two hits to kill and has a
mean fastball with grenades. Just fire twice to end the first part.

    Next comes a big bruiser with a turret. If you stand slightly to
the side of the middle, like right on the line, he cannot hit you, and
you can throw grenades until he blows up. Repeat the process for the
next gunner.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

==========================================================================
                         d.) The Coal Mines
==========================================================================

    Watch out for the helicopter as soon as you move forward. It has a
deadly spread-fire that can be a quick death. Make your way up to the
Tank, and start moving fast through the barriers. Watch for soldiers
shooting rockets on mine carts, as one hit blows up your Tank.

    When you start to cross the bridge, your Tank might blow up. If you
destroy the enemy Tank on the bridge with your machine gun, you can get
into that one and use it. Cross the next set of bridges, and watch out for
soldiers jumping in your path from the water below. Eventually you'll
reach a bridge with two T power-ups in front of it. Grab them, and then
make your way slowly across the bridge. It's packed with enemy Tanks, but
your Shrapnel should make short work of them. Watch for the Tanks right
after the bridge, as they shoot their cannons. If you don't already have a
T power-up, grenade the bunkers for another one before the boss fight.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Boss : Plow Brothers
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    The Plow Brothers know only two things: kicking your arse, and
kicking your arse harder. Fortunately, they decided to use a plow to
attack you with instead of their bare hands. They drive haphazardly
around, throwing grenades at you. However, like the retarded Bobby
Tanx, they face a problem with their throwing abilities: they can't
forward.

    Since they can't, just stand in front of the plow and shoot with
your Shrapnel or throw grenades. When he moves towards you, just move
out of his way. When you can't get in front of the plow, move back
into the farthest corner until you get the opportunity to do so. Very
simple. However, when the plow breaks down, they break out the pythons
and chuck your stupid ass into the mineshaft.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

==========================================================================
                      e.) Deeper Into The Mines
==========================================================================

    When you start this level, it's time for the mini-game Hostage
Roundup. You ride in a mine cart, and by pressing the A Button and a
direction, you throw your lasso out and rescue all the poor people tied
up. It's not possible to get ALL the hostages with one player, so don't
waste your time trying. Also, when you go around turns, get ready to shoot
your lasso, because there always seems to be a hostage right around the
corner that you forget. Once you've gone around six turns or so, the cart
crashes, and you're back to shooting. There are tons of red Grenadiers who
all drop L power-ups, so kill one, grab the power-up, and move on to the
boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Boss : Train Of DOOM
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    Here comes the choo-choo, coming to choo you up and spit you out
(Bad pun, I know). The train moves on a set rail vertically, and lets
out troops when it stops. He releases one yellow Sergeant and one green
Soldier. The train fires a set of three shots, either in a straight
line or a spread, depending on where you are in relation to the train.

    You should stand slightly to the right or left of the train, so it
still shoots in a straight line, barely missing you. When it stops, go
for the soldiers first, then continue with the train. Try to stay near
the middle at all times, as leaving it makes the train shoot in a
spread. The Sergeant throws grenades, so be sure to take him out first.
Eventually, the Train will make its final stop, and you can move on.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

==========================================================================
                        f.) Welcome To Havana
==========================================================================

    Watch as the little monkeys crawl across the roofs to kill you, and
then shove a grenade down their throat. Take your time in this level, as
enemies seem to appear constantly and from places you would least expect
them to. Watch for open manholes and overhangs, as soldiers will almost
certainly appear there. When you get to your first blue tank, watch out
for cannon fire.

    Eventually, you'll start encountering nothing but Tanks. Green Tanks
fire one cannon shot at a time. Yellow Tanks fire a regular machine gun,
but have more health than the Green Tank. Blue Tanks fire a series of
three cannon shots in a straight line. They are the most dangerous kind.
Once you reach the main street, kill the bottom red Grenadier to get the T
power-up, and just jam on the A button to get through as quick as
possible. Once you reach the end, the Plow Brothers pick you up again and
throw you down into the sewers (Bah, they will get theirs soon enough.)

==========================================================================
                           g.) The Sewers
==========================================================================

    When the introduction to this level states that you have to fight
differently than before, they mean it. Close quarters + lots o' enemy
troops = deep ****. The key is to grab something that has a wide area of
damage, such as the Flamethrower and the Spreadshot. Once you have that,
it will be a breeze. However, until you do, the going is rough.

    When you start out, aim for the red Grenadier to get a Laser power-
up. There will be troops running all over the place, and also rats. Rats
are 1000 points if you shoot them. Since most of the soldiers in the first
part are just normal Green ones, there shouldn't be any major problems.

    Once you get to half ways, soldiers with rockets start appearing.
While not a problem by themselves, they tend to appear in groups and use
crossfire tactics. They won't fire until you are in their crosshairs or
right beside them, so try to take them individually. Watch for soldiers
coming out of the grates on the sides. Once you get to a long tunnel, try
to grab a Spreadshot power-up and go on to the next boss.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Boss : Lots And Lots Of Soldiers
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    I shouldn't have to waste more than three sentences on this boss.
Grab a Spreadshopt power-up from one of the numerous red Grenadiers if
if you don't have one already. Stand in the middle of the screen at

                           h.) Back In Havana
==========================================================================

    Here we go. Helicopters, and rockets, and grenades, oh my! Soldiers
are coming out of the woodwork for this level. There are two main threats:
soldiers come up from behind you now frequently, and helicopters.
Helicopters are deadly in this level. DON'T stand near the bottom when
they come on-screen, as they will fire another round at you, which you
won't be able to escape from. It's one long straight level, so once you
reach the end, it's time for Mama Tanx's golden boy to shine.

Boss : Bernie Tanx
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    The dictator's secretary noticed something when she was writing
out death notices to the families who had lost their sons in the war
soon to be know as One Guy Kicking Our Ass War. It seemed Missus Tanx
had lost three of her four sons so far: two tank captains, and some
schlub who was firing at you sometime during Level 4. Only Bernie, the
oldest, remained. Shocked, she hurried to her supervisor to tell him.
He called the general, and a battalion was formed to rescue Bernie and
send him home. However, once they reached Havana, they got shot in the
face, and Bernie was on his own...

    Bernie drives one big Tank, and he knows how to use it. He drives
to the corners, firing a spread of cannon shots at you. This causes a
double-threat: getting run over, and getting shot by a cannon. Bernie
turns his turret a little slowly though, so that's the key.

    Try to get on the opposite side of Bernie's turret or to the side
of it. For example, if his turret is pointing left, stand below it or
on the right side. Continue to fire upon Bernie until his turret turns
to face you. As soon as it does, move to the right or left quickly, as
the cannon comes quickly after that. He only fires when he is stopped,
so let loose before he does. Soon, Mama Tanx will have none of her
boys coming home to her...*sniffle*

==========================================================================
                             i.) Airfield
==========================================================================

    The level has three different parts to it: soldiers with bazookas,
Tanks, and soldiers with grenades. What makes it difficult are all the
obstacles in your way of movement. While gunfire may be easy to avoid in
an open path, it's quite difficult while trying to make your way through a
wall of barrels and bunkers. Once again, the key is to advance slowly, and
take the time to destroy all troops before moving on.

    Near the beginning, if you move slowly, you'll find a Extra Life to
appear where you once were. Once you reach the jungle, you'll know you are
done with Green rocketeers and on to Tanks. There are Green and Blue
Tanks, so cannon fire is your opposition. There aren't any power-ups in
this level, sadly, so grenades are your best weapons. Once you pass
through the Tank column, regular soldiers are finally here. Fight them as
you usually would, and then it's time for payback.

Boss : The Plow Brothers' Last Stand
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    They've tossed you around for the last time. Apparently, they got
a whole new plow, and decked it out with rocket launchers. They fire a
spread of three rockets to the left, and one single rocket to the
right. Once they have moved to the bottom, they will go to the left
side of the screen and move back up, firing rockets from the right
side in quick succession. The cycle continues after they reach the top.

    When they begin to head down, stand in front of the plow again, but
beware: sometimes a stray missile heads forward, so I would be on your
toes. When they are almost at the bottom, move above them, and then
move in front of the plow again when they reach the left side. You can
do this all day, and eventually you'll have your revenge for all those
times you got tossed. Now, ON TO THE DICTATOR ! VIVA LA REVOLUTION !

==========================================================================
                      j.) The Dictator's Fortress
==========================================================================

    Ok, boys and girls, last level. Heads up for Tanks, as they seem to
rule this level. Also, there are zero Power-Ups, which makes the last boss
a whole lot more difficult.  Mostly the Tanks are a deadly blue hue, which
makes them quite difficult to kill. Also, Blue soldiers appear for the
first time, which look a lot like the first player's guy. Expect many
arguments of "Why did you shoot me, idiot?!" to ensue if you are playing
two players with a younger sibling/complete moron. Once you reach the
turrets, you know you're at the end. Turrets are the most difficult enemy
in the game, due to their homing rockets. Just move a lot and throw
grenades. Once you get past them, its time for the FINAL BOSS.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Boss : Dictator
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    When you enter the arena, the Dictator does nothing more than run
back and forth on the rooftop. It's the Turrets that do all the work.
I choose to work on the left side first, but it's personal preference.
Make sure only two Turrets are on the screen at once, and ignore the
Dictator. Try your best to throw grenades while avoiding rockets. It
may look like they aren't hitting, but they are. I usually throw two,
run back to avoid Turret fire, and then move in again. Once you get
rid of two Turrets, move to the other side to get rid of the other two
It's a lot easier this time because you have a wider space to move in.
Once you blow up all four Turrets, the Dictator leaps into action.

    The Dictator apparently has an arsenal on him, because he fire a
cannon and rocket launcher, and also throws grenades. The cannon is in
a spreadfire fashion, and the rockets are similar to the ones fired
by the Turrets. The grenades are thrown in succession on the edges of
the rooftops.

    To beat him, throw grenades only. Try to stand back as far as you
can while still being able to hit him with grenades, as distance gives
you more time to react. The grenades he throws shouldn't even touch
you. The cannon spread has a wide space on its right side, so you can
run through there when he fires it. The rockets are tough to avoid,
running towards them seems to make it harder for them to get a lock on
you. Throw grenades when you get a clear shot, and don't force it.
Good luck !

   to Guerilla War, but a lot of stuff is unchanged, such as Castro's
